MySQL PDO Tutorial Lesson 3 - Query method

03:02
Enrol on the course at https://www.webinaction.co.uk/p/mysql-pdo-tutorial to download the Working Files. There are several ways to display database records. The first is a simple SQL query and a foreach loop, which is not specifically tied to PDO – you can use it with any connection type. The issue with this is that we would have to escape the output before displaying it using for instance htmlentities to guard against odd characters messing things up.

MySQL PDO Tutorial - Introduction

02:31
Enrol on the course at https://www.webinaction.co.uk/p/mysql-pdo-tutorial to download the Working Files. This is a short series of tutorials on how to connect to a MySQL database using a PDO connection and display the database records in the browser. Why should we use PDO? Well first there is a choice of only two ways to connect – either mysqli, the ‘i’ standing for ‘improved’, or PDO, which stands for ‘PHP data objects’. The old mysql_* commands are deprecated and inherently a security risk and should no longer be used. If possible they should be replaced in old code. Both PDO and mysqli are equivalent in terms of security as both support prepared statements, meaning that user input is not entered straight into the SQL query but sent along a different channel where it is sanitised and safe to use. So both remove the risk of SQL injection inherent in using mysql_* commands. Unlike mysqli, PDO supports named parameters and placeholder question marks; mysqli only supports placeholders. I will show how to work with both in this tutorial and you will see that named parameters are an easier and more convenient way of working with database fields easier. Unlike mysqli, PDO supports many different database vendors – mysqli as we would gather from the name, only supports mysql databases. If you did have to swap from one database type to another you would still have work to do as the SQL queries would be different, but at least it would be possible without many changes. In summary, PDO is secure, flexible, and convenient and the best choice for all new projects and updates. Before you begin, you will find the code for this project at http://webinaction.co.uk/coding-tutorials/mysql-pdo-tutorial/ In the zip file you will find the ‘testdb.sql’. In phpMyAdmin click on ‘Import’ and import this file and the database you need, ‘testdb’, will be created. Once you've done that, let's get started...

Enrol on the course at https://www.webinaction.co.uk/p/jquery-ui-interfaces to download the Working Files. This lesson shows how to code a jQuery UI interface to allow items to be dragged to any of multiple destinations using draggable() and droppable(). As always, the new location is stored by updating the database in the background with an AJAX call. The code for 'dragndrop.js' is available at 'http://webinaction.co.uk/coding-tutorials/jquery-ui-tutorial/lesson-5-drag-drop-multiple-destinations/'

MySQL PDO Tutorial Lesson 1 - Connection

05:22
Enrol on the course at https://www.webinaction.co.uk/p/mysql-pdo-tutorial to download the Working Files. The PDO object takes a maximum of four parameters, of which only three are obligatory, so we start out by creating a new instance of the PDO class and assigning this to the object $db: $db = new PDO() Each of our three parameters will be enclosed in single quotes and separated by commas: $db = new PDO('', '', '' ) For the first of these three required parameters, we need to specify the Data Source Name (or DSN). For MySQL this starts with the prefix mysql: $db = new PDO('mysql: ', '', '' ) This is followed by host= and the name of the host where the database is, which is “localhost”, followed by a semicolon: $db = PDO('mysql:host=localhost; ', '', '' ) Then dbname= and the name of the database, which is ‘testdb’, followed by a semicolon again: $db = PDO('mysql:host=localhost;dbname=testdb; ', '', '' ) Then, very important, the character set of the database. We can see in the SQL file that the default character set is UTF-8 which is what we should be using, so we set that here in the connection using charset=utf8: $db = PDO( 'mysql:host=localhost;dbname=testdb;charset=utf8 ', ' ', ' ' ) and that’s the end of the first parameter. The next two parameters are the username and password. Because this database is on our local machine we can safely connect to it using ‘root’ as the username and no password – just empty single quotes. $db = PDO( 'mysql:host=localhost;dbname=testdb;charset=utf8', 'root', '' ) At the stage of putting the project online we would have to create a more secure username and password and use those instead. Finish it all off as always in PHP with a semicolon at the end of the line: $db = PDO( 'mysql:host=localhost;dbname=testdb;charset=utf8', 'root', '' ); That’s the connection done. We’ll save that as ‘connect.php’, and we can check it by doing var_dump($db) and we should get the following cryptic message returned to the browser: ‘object(PDO)#1 (0) { }’. If you get that, it means you’ve connected successfully to the database. If that’s too cryptic to convince you of our success, make a change to the PDO parameters to introduce an error. Change the database name and we instead get a message ‘Fatal Error – Unknown database’. Change that back and change any of the other details and you’ll get a Fatal Error with an appropriate indication of what is wrong each time. So, we’ve connected successfully but when we introduce an error we get an ugly and very informative error message. This is useful in development, but it’s not what we would want our end users to see – it’s not just ugly, it also gives away information about our system. In the next lesson we’ll use try … catch to prevent this uncontrolled error message being returned and instead we will cause the program to fail gracefully without giving away any information about how our system works.

MySQL PDO Tutorial Lesson 2 - Error catching

02:53
Enrol on the course at https://www.webinaction.co.uk/p/mysql-pdo-tutorial to download the Working Files. We have successfully connected to our MySQL database using PDO. Then we deliberately introduced errors into the connection parameters and found that informative messages are returned to the browser as to where the problem lies. This is useful at the development stage as it tells us what is wrong, but in production we want to hide this sensitive information and return a friendly custom message which simply says something is wrong without giving exact infomration about the problem. We do this using try … catch.

N.B.: Since this course was made there have been some big changes in Sensei. The principles of how to get Sensei to work together with eMember and eStore are still valid, but you will have to adapt some details to take account of the newer version of Sensei. "Build your own Online Learning Platform with Wordpress" Chapter 1, Lesson 1 - Clean Installation of Wordpress You may be very familiar with installing WordPress, but for the sake of completeness and to accommodate those who are not, I will take you from the very beginning – performing a clean installation of WordPress, which you download from http://wordpress.org. For one-to-one support in setting up your online learning platform using Woothemes Sensei, WP eMember and WP eStore, enrol on the course at http://webinaction.co.uk.

Wordpress for eLearning - Introduction

02:31
http://webinaction.co.uk "Build your own Online Learning Platform with Wordpress" Introduction to the Course This course is a comprehensive guide to building your own paid online learning platform with Wordpress, using Sensei from Woothemes as the learning management system, in conjunction with WP eMember for handling memberships and WP eStore Wordpress plugins as the shopping cart and payments system. There is also the option of setting up your own affiliate platform so you can invite affiliates to help sell your courses for you in return for a commission. Teaching online is a great way of sharing your knowledge directly with a huge number of students. It’s also a fantastic solution to the problem of how to scale your teaching business – from the teacher’s point of view, making one course and selling it on the web certainly beats going to the classroom every day and teaching the same material over and over again. However, increasingly it seems that the big online learning hosts are forcing educators to raise course prices so as to cover the higher cut they are taking, whilst at the same time discounting courses and in the process potentially damaging the perceived value of your courses in the eyes of customers. If you want to be able to control your prices and keep them at a level which is fair to your students, and have absolute control over your platform, then Wordpress is the way to go, but the initial setup is trickier and more timetaking than going for an off-the-shelf solution. If you set up your platform as you do this course, you'll cut out all the messing around and experimenting with settings and have your own online school up and running in 3 hours or less - Don’t try to go through the course taking notes and do it for real later – that would be a waste of time. Instead of trawling the web for answers to problems, all the solutions are right in front of you, all in one place, with explanations where there are alternative ways of setting up the site according to the style of your course and your teaching requirements. This entire course is FREE on Youtube, and hopefully will answer all your questions. If you do need more support, enrol on the course at http://webinaction.co.uk, where I am available for one-to-one support and frequently for instant chat sessions, and will help you get your e-learning platform up and running quickly and easily using these versatile plugins. If you find you’d like my help with setting up your platform, then I provide support through the discussion panel on my website, webinaction.co.uk and I’m frequently available there for live chat. To access this you need to enrol for the course at www.webinaction.co.uk and I can help you sort out any further problems you may have. Enjoy the course – leave me feedback – and I hope to see you logged in at webinaction.co.uk.

jQuery UI tutorial - Introduction

03:42
Enrol on the course at https://www.webinaction.co.uk/p/jquery-ui-interfaces to download the Working Files. This is Richard Stibbard from webinaction.co.uk, bringing you a series of mini-project tutorials on how to build various styles of jQuery user interfaces, each of which updates a database in the background using an AJAX call. In my “Ultimate Web Development Course”, I show all the steps needed to build from scratch a user interface like Youtube’s “add to favourites” feature. This is how it works – you select a fictitious movie-goer and then click the heart icon for any of the movie titles to add them to that movie-goer’s favourites list. To remove movies from favourites, you drag their titles to the trashcan. So that’s a one-way drag and drop interface, dragging from here to the trashcan to delete favourites combined with a one-way click interface, clicking here to add favourites. I thought it would be useful to show how to build some more jQuery interfaces like this. They’re all very simple to do – once you know how to do them. They can be a bit of a struggle if you don’t. I’ll demonstrate them all before we begin. In the first, we drag items from one list to another – we have a list of available fruits on the left and out-of-stock fruits on the right, and we can drag an item from one list to the other to change its availability. Refresh the page and the items remain in their new position because we’ve updated their details in the database in the background. This is done using “sortable” and “connect with” in jQuery to connect the two lists. The second project is the same but with more than two lists – we can drag items from any list to any of the others and their new positions are saved. The code for this is is very similar to the first one, and again uses “sortable” and “connect with”. Thirdly is a ‘click’ interface where the user just clicks on an item and it is immediately added to the opposite list. Because it’s not so obvious to the user how this works, we’ll have instructions appear as the mouse moves over each of the lists. The fourth mini-project reorders list items using a drag-and-drop interface – again, this is done with jquery sortable, this time using the serialize function to send the data to the AJAX file. The last of the mini-projects is another drag and drop interface – this time with multiple boxes as containers – using jquery draggable and droppable interactions. As with all my tutorials, these provide everything you need to get your project working – including the database connection and AJAX files – and all the code is available as a zip file to download from webinaction.co.uk/coding-tutorials/jquery-ui-tutorial/. So if you’ve been searching around here and there and only found bits of code which are hard to put together, this series of tutorials may be just what you’ve been looking for – let’s get going!

The best thing about this course is that its very well organised and Dr Richard knows what he is teaching. Every lesson is meaningful and every word he says sits right into your brain. I am a huge fan of this course and can't stop writing and praising enough about it. It is by far the best course on web development to take up and i can say this because i have taken other courses on udemy and trust me they all disappoint at some point. But 5 stars to Dr Richard and his course. And lastly i want to add the best thing about this course is wherever and whenever you have a query you write about it and you will get the precise answer within a day. Many Thanks to Dr Richard !!!" - Aprajita Sambyal "The gold standard. This course is the model that other Udemy developers should use to develop their courses. Very comprehensive, very professional. And I learned a heck of a lot too!" - Tony "A comprehensive and challenging introduction to modern dynamic website development. This has been one of the best web courses ever. It should be used as a model by almost anyone thinking of teaching on the web. It has cleared out nearly a decade of web programming cobwebs. The fact you have made a course which is complete end-to-end is impressive. The fact that code examples all work puts nearly every programming book and most web courses to shame." - Paul W "One of the Best Courses on this subject available. Dr. Richard Stibbard does not rush through his explanations. His statements and points are clear and concise. He allows you to see what, why and how then he asks you to work on the rest of the example with the knowledge that you have just gained. I have taken many courses on-line and this is by far the most pleasurable I have had the opportunity to participate in. To Dr. Richard Stibbard all I can say is 'thank you'." - William P. ------------------------------------ Check out my teaching style with over 50 FREE video tutorials here on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/webinaction.
