Organize your MTG collection like an Engineer!

09:34
UPDATE: Part 2 of this video is now posted, going over the software tools I use AND showing my current collection value. https://youtu.be/uz4oA2fQhno How does a very analytical yet efficiency driven nerd organize his precious cardboard?!? Pretty much like this. In this video I show the final system I landed on after 21 years of constant refinement and improvement. Note this system is not designed for investment purposes, or mass card-hoarding, no... This system is designed to help me quickly build decks, to know EXACTLY what I have so trading becomes backed up by quick electronic access and to keep the value of my collection spread across as many deck-ready playable cards as possible. How does Edwin buy his cards (past and future)?

14:01
How does an Engineer turn cash into cards for playing Magic? What cards to I target for purchase for future trades? Here's a quick rundown on how I spend my cash so it can be eventually turned into the cards I really want for Vintage/Legacy/OldSchool/EDH formats. Tavis King Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UkcsVvOrfI Tavis King Part 2: https://youtu.be/yGBoKcJTlQw This is part 3 of a video series where Tavis King is displaying his amazing misprint collection and dumping some crazy arcane knowledge about Magic the Gathering on Daniel, Rudy, Open Boosters, and myself. Tavis had so much interesting knowledge that each of us took turns filming him. Rudy went first, Daniel went second, and I was third. All 3 videos should be posted within the next few days I think. Tavis is considering starting his own YouTube channel, I think that would be great. If you agree... leave him some notes in the comments!! In case you were curious about what it is I actually do, what kind of Engineer I am... here's a quick video with background. RUG Crazies Vs Disco Troll: Old School Championship final qualifying round

13:24
Red blUe Green aggro versus Red Blue Black Troll Disco on the high tables in the last round of qualifying for top 8 at the Old School Championship at the Grand Prix Las Vegas event. I have sat on this video for nearly a year and waited to post it because I thought there was other content coming out in other channels but it seems it never did. I thought the video was appropriate since people are really recognizing that Troll Disco is a Tier 1 build and Michael Christian did a great job piloting it that day. I believe I'm missing a picture from one of my match ups in the qualifying rounds, but I just can't remember who that 4th match was with. I suppose that's the problem with posting a video so long after the fact. At least Old School is an eternal format and all these decks are just as relevant today as they were then. === ETME INFO === https://www.instagram.com/edwin_the_magic_engineer/ [email protected] PO Box 2333 Windermere, FL 34786

Rudy vs Edwin Old School fun game!

21:58
Rudy versus Edwin in another nobody cares, non-prime time, nerd game... being played from Rudy's parents basement. Tacos were floppy, Timmy's were asleep, and lots of animals were harmed in the making of this film. This game was played months ago with two different recording sources but I just never had the time to edit them together into one terrible to watch cringe worthy video like this. Signed Beta Magic the Gathering MTG unboxing

06:39
Investment or Birthday gift to myself? You decide. This was the most amazing unboxing I have ever done for Magic the Gathering. I had to get this one on video. I'm still amazed that somebody had a collection like this and sold it!!! Funds from this came mostly from the selling of other Magic cards on Ebay, but still it was an amazing purchase. I'll probably be selling some of them off to finish off a P9 set and cover the costs. But keeping most hopefully. I felt a bit like that guy in the OpenBoosters channel who opens booster packs of Alpha/Beta/Unlimited but in this case I knew exactly what I was getting. Still though, the beauty and condition blew me away. I've played this game since 1997 and never saw a set like this before!!! Huge thanks to Dave and Adams Card world for selling this collection. Very professional service, I'll be going back to them for certain! Follow me on instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/edwin_the_magic_engineer/

Rudy plays Magic the Gathering! No REALLY!

24:49
Rudy of Alpha Investments actually PLAYING Magic the Gathering?!? Yeah, it happened and here's some video of at least one of the games! I was honored for Rudy to play my Turbo Stasis 2.4 deck (my actual deck/cards) and I was using Daniel Chang's own personal Power Monolith deck (complete with Summer Magic cards). My build of Turbo Stasis is hard to pilot at first because it does not play like "normal" Stasis builds. You gotta attempt locking very early and use tricks to keep it going. You gotta be aggressive and that's hard to do until you have played it for a bit. Rudy did a great job, but this video is his first game with it. So we gotta cut him some slack. VIDEO REPLY: Weissman and Menendian RL discussion! Part 2

19:36
On Daniel Chang, Brian Weissman, and Steven Menendian's last trip to Europe to play Old School and Alpha 40 there was a really great discussion that took place about the Magic the Gathering Reserve list. The discussion was stretched over 5 videos on the Vintage Magic YouTube channel. I have linked them below. I wanted to really take my time to think about what was said and give each of these 3 guys a solid attempt to understand their viewpoint, because each of them is a legend in Magic in their own right... Brian is the original Tier 1 player, creator of The Deck and pro-tour player. Steven Menendian won the 2007 Vintage world championship, is super active in the Vintage and Old School communities, and literally wrote the book on Gush, and Daniel Chang owns and drives the business which buys and sells THE MOST premier cards and artwork for Magic the Gathering in the world. To say each of these guys are experts in their own right is putting it lightly. What made this so interesting to me is that they all did NOT agree on the topic of the Reserve List. For such highly skilled, well versed, and deeply embedded people to disagree really shows there is some fundamental issues with the Reserve List topic that have never been resolved. My goal in this video reply was to clarify/correct some expressed perspectives that I do believe are incorrect or missed a few facts/realizations. Perhaps some of you will like what I add to that discussion, perhaps not. Either way I hope this video is at least insightful and/or entertaining. Enjoy! 2 Million+ dollar graded Beta MTG set?!?

11:43
Yes this set might indeed have a value over 2 Million dollars. It's hard to give exact prices because SO FEW Beta's exist with grades of 9.5 or 10 but for the ones that have even recently sold with those grades it seems that 2 Million+ might be a reasonable number. Only the rares in his set are shown in this video, not the commons and uncommons. But yes, he does have them and with similar grades. We just didn't want to make a really long boring video. According to Open Boosters, this set in this video might be the 2nd or 3rd most expensive set of Graded Beta in the world. He's going off the listed owners and stats on Beckett's website, but it's hard to know for sure because that kind of information is not discussed or proven very much. But here is his collection. Old School 93/94 Deck Tech (Turbo Stasis 2.3)

29:37
As requested by my followers, here is the latest version of Turbo Stasis 2.3 for the Magic the Gathering 93/94 "Old School" format. I have previous videos of this deck but with different builds and the deck continued to evolve after those videos based on the results of play testing and discovering weaknesses to the design. This is the build I have been playing the most and I'm convinced it's the best build of this deck yet. I first showed an image of this updated list on my Instagram account a few days ago and offered to make a video about the updates if people wanted to hear about the changes. Many did, so here's that video. If you are one of the people I played against on Skype, please leave a note below and let people know what you thought! If you have a question you would like me to answer please either list it below with the tag (1KQA) or can just email me directly at [email protected] Here is my 5th and final mono colored budget deck for the 1993/1994 "Old School" format. Like the others, this deck can be built on a budget and it is indeed competitive in the format. This deck stands as an example that you really don't NEED the expensive cards to be competitive in Old School Magic the Gathering! Like the others, this list went for cheap aggressive creatures, with a disruption strategy and a recovery strategy that ties into the rest of the deck theme. Feel free to take this list and change it how ever you wish and if you find something that's a good budget card change that works really well... let me know! Doing a Mulligan SUCKS! And here's why it changed!

11:40
Why did the process of doing a Mulligan (shuffling your starting hand back in and re-drawing cards) start to change? What prompted it?!? Well I explain that history and even show THE deck that caused the initial change! Yes! There was a specific deck build that existed only for a few months between February 1997 and April 1997 that pushed the limit so badly WoTC just had to take action. I did my best effort re-creating that deck for this video and talking about why it prompted the change of Mulligan process. I will be probably show this deck in action or at least talk the user through it more in another future video, but for this video the focus is just on how this one overpowered deck pushed the magic format to change. Recall Vise! The deck that BROKE the original Mulligan rule!

21:11
Why did the original Mulligan rule Break? Because of this deck! It was only viable for two months or so and it required draw spells from the latest set (Visions) released in Feb 1997. I mentioned this deck in my last video but this time I walk you through how it actually plays so people can see how degenerate it was and why WoTC needed to make some immediate changes. Mulligans changed in April 1997, and Black Vise was restricted to 1 just a few months after that. The original Mulligan rule was if you had all lands, or no lands you could mulligan. This deck runs 5 lands so many of the starting hands had no lands which meant you could mulligan until you had a killer hand then erupt! Here's the last video where I spoke about the Mulligan rule: https://youtu.be/BRZvsPfnPbQ === ETME INFO === Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/edwin_the_magic_engineer/ Email: [email protected] Mail: PO Box 2333 Windermere, FL 34786 FULL LIST 4x Force of Will 1x Regrowth 1x Recall 1x Mind Twist 1x Balance 4x Brainstorm 4x Prosperity 1x Brainstorm 1x Wheel of Fortune 1x Timetwister 1x Ancestral Recall 1x Mystical Tutor 1x Demonic Tutor 1x Vampiric Tutor 1x Merchant Scroll 1x Time Walk 4x Black Vise 1x Fastbond 4x Hurkylls Recall 2x Candelabra of Tawnos 1x Library of Alexandria 4x City of Brass 1x Black Lotus 1x Mox Sapphire 1x Mox Ruby 1x Mox Emerald 1x Mox Jet 1x Mox Pearl 1x Sol Ring 4x Mana Vault 4x Mana Crypt 4x Lion's Eye Diamond
Old School Magic deck Tech (The Deck... Randy Buehler)

27:03
Brian Weissman's legendary build of "The Deck" has been the gold standard for all powered Type1/Vintage/Old School builds using the early sets of Magic the Gathering since nearly the inception of Magic. Brian has evolved that deck over the years to adjust to shifting metagames Based on location, and also for the changing card pools. Randy Buehler is a hall of fame Magic player and he's been attending Old School formats and making very strong showings with this build of Brian's "The Deck." I got to play against this exact build at GP Vegas 2017 sitting right across from Randy himself, and since then I've used it for play testing. I've realized this build is very similar to other builds of "The Deck" but it does function a bit differently and it's weakness is also a bit different from Brians builds. I thought the differences were interesting enough that it warranted an EtME Deck Tech review! Arcade1up Joystick UPGRADE! SO WORTH IT!!

15:26
That's right folks, I finally upgraded the one feature of the Arcade1up Retro gaming cabinets that I really think was badly needed. They Joysticks have felt a little loose and squishy from day 1, and I mentioned this on my first video as well. Now with this change and one more (inexpensive but spicy upgrade as well... watch to see...) the arcade cabinets are now perfect for me. Any other upgrades would be fun, but not needed in my opinion. Turns out the upgrade was a bit more complicated then I thought it would be but I worked out the kinks and showed you guys how I did it too! 18:20
Were they crazy, or pure geniuses to unrestrict such a powerful card? Time will tell. HAHA see what I did there? Seriously though, it was! The Reserve List card "Time Vault" which was only printed in Alpha, Beta Unlimited and the Collectors Editions was recently unrestricted in Swedish and Atlantic Old School formats. What HAPPENED to Trading?!?!

11:10
Trading magic cards seems to have gone away! Has anybody else noticed this? Yes I know it still happens to some degree, but it's MUCH less than it used to be. When I first started with Magic I noticed people trading all the time and it seems like it nearly never happens anymore. Which I think is really sad. Do you agree? Disagree? I would love to hear what you think about the topic. Real MTG Mox replicas?!? Real Gemstones? Yes!

04:35
On my family vacation to Florida I spent a lot of time with my friend Daniel Chang of VintageMagic.com and also Rudy from Alpha Investments, Open Boosters, and the amazing MTG Knowledge Guru Tavis King, seen here in this video. Tavis brought a set of real, handmade, UNOFFICIAL, Magic the Gathering Mox Gem replicas to the YouTuber meet up at Rudy's shop in Jacksonville Florida. Everybody wanted to buy them, but didn't want to step on each others toes. This set was bought by Daniel Chang and given to me as a gift. That's how Daniel rolls. When he gives a gift it's something special and because he wants to. Not based on some schedule (birthday, Christmas, etc.) These were simply an amazing gift from his heart, to anybody whom doubts the man, Dan is the real deal. There is a real provenance to these gems too! They were handmade by a special jeweler that wishes to remain anonymous, and only 6 sets were ever made. 5 of those sets had all 6 moxes, 1 of them was just the original 5 moxes. The first set ever made was just glass, but the next 5 sets all use real gemstones (lab created but real nonetheless.) The gem settings are sterling silver, and gold plated. So they are legit gems, real precious metals, VERY rare, and absolutely beautiful in person! I most certainly wish that Wizards of the Coast would make stuff like this for players. I bet people would buy them like crazy... don't you think?!? Here's an official WOTC article when Dan Frazier got his set directly from the Jeweler whom made them. How does an Engineer detect Financial Bubbles?

29:55
When does an asset class qualify as "in a bubble?" It's not a very exact science and there is no agreement among economists. Most of the time they seem to get it wrong and only identify bubbles after they crash. So how does an Engineer see it (at least this Engineer...). Well... like this. How to SELL your Magic Cards!

27:17
Most of you watching this are not a store, you're not a distributor, you're like me... just a person with some cards who's looking to sell and get as close as possible to fair value for your cards. An old friend from College days (1996-2000) reached out to me for help selling his Alpha/Beta power and other amazing cards. I spent a bunch of time with him over chat, filling him in on many of these details and I decided I should just make a video about this info. How does an Engineer view selling magic cards? Temporal Stasis 1.0 Old School MTG Deck Tech

28:44
Here is my first version of an Old School 93/94 deck using the updated Restricted List for Atlantic and Swedish rule sets, Temporal Stasis! This build started with my final versions of Turbo Stasis where the plan was to aggressively lock down the board with Stasis/Winter Orb and chew up the opponent with Black Vise. This build plays a similar strategy but with so many Time Vaults "unlocked" it can play a more aggressive combo strategy and bypass even more of the control cards needed to buy time for a lockdown. Example of playing 93/94 Old School Magic over Skype!

08:08
I wanted to get a visual example of what it's like to play this format on YouTube. I really hope to bring more people into this format and I hope people get to see how healthy of a format it really is. Don't believe the stories and hype, there's hundreds of competitive decks that could win this format and for anybody whom used to play back in those days it's such a nostalgia blast. You won't believe how it takes you back. Here's the link to the facebook group. The idea is that you get invited/accepted to the group. Somebody asks for a game and you respond (or you ask for a game) The two of you exchange Skype account names. You meet up via Skype and literally just play a game! Here's the 4th deck in my series of Budget Decks for Old School Magic the Gathering (1993/1994 format) I have done every basic color but white, so... who can guess what will be last?!? The entire purpose of this series is to PROVE that you don't need a huge wallet or Power-9 to play Old School. Since it's one of the... if not THE most balanced format out there... an unpowered budget deck CAN win with the right pilot behind it. And that same deck will be filled with cards that are most likely only going UP in value and can be played eternally since there is no format rotation. How does an Engineer design his Magic deck? (part 1 of 3)

29:15
This is a 3 part series about how an Engineer goes about designing (brewing) his decks for Magic the Gathering. I'm creating this series based on request of my subscribers as they wanted to see if I had a process and some best known methods and I do in fact. There's several general questions I almost always ask myself as I first build a deck. This process comes after 23 years of playing this game and constantly designing my own decks. The process I'm going to share in these 3 videos gets my builds in the ballpark of where they need to be. Stated differently, I can usually get a deck to the point where only active play testing against other decks and seeing the local meta will impact the next changes to my build. The format this deck is getting built for is called "Old School" format and it's only using cards printed in 1993 and 1994 or later ones with the same artwork and card frame. http://www.eternalcentral.com/9394rules/ Also, I have a "budget" series of Old School decks and I talked about making a "mid range expense" series of Old School decks, well this is also the first mid-range expense Old School format deck. No Power 9, no 1k cards, but having several cards over $100. Deck Brewers series part 1: The idea spark, Support cards, design holes, refine. This video! Changing an Old School MTG Championship Finals deck!

28:56
In this video I take you through 4 (kinda 5...) versions of the RUG Crazies aggressive creature deck for the Old School format. This deck has INDEED put up the results but it's also needed to change as the Meta shifts from one style to another. Here's a quick synopsis of the versions I walk you through. 1. GP Vegas 2017 version (finished 5th only due to a missed first game, 10 min late) 2. GP Vegas 2018 version (finished 2nd) 3. Summer Derby 2018 version (untested changes from Weissman) 3b... what I would do if sticking with Red-Green-Blue 4. A new version meant to cut red and be more resilient against hate cards... Tier 1 OldSchool 93/94 Deck Tech: (RUG Crazies)

24:15
This is my best home-brewed OldSchool (93/94 format) powered Magic deck. I spent quite a few months working on the design it absolutely proved to be Tier 1 at GP Vegas 2017, both Saturday and Sunday. I started playing a deck very similar to this basic design way back in College, probably around 1999. But back then I was never allowed 4 Berserks, Drains were already banned in Legacy (Type 1.5), and rules were different (mana burn, interrupts, etc). I can call this Homebrew because I literally developed that on my own back then and started from that list with OldSchool format. Do you guys like this format of walking through the design of a deck? Or would you prefer to just see a deck being played? I've had a lot of requests for OldSchool content and since most of my games are played over Skype I was not sure how best to create that content. So I gave this a try first. === ETME INFO === Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/edwin_the_magic_engineer/ Email: [email protected] Mail: PO Box 2333 Windermere, FL 34786 == RUG Crazies == 4x Kird Ape 4x Serendib Efreet 3x Erhnam Djinn 3x Juggernaut 4x Unstable Mutation 4x Berserk 4x Lightning Bolt 2x Nevinyrrals Disk 1x Chaos Orb 1x Wheel of Fortune 1x Timetwister 1x Time Walk 1x Ancestral Recall 1x Braingeyser 4x Tiaga 4x Volcanic Island 4x Tropical Island 3x City of Brass 3x Mishra's Factory 1x Library of Alexandria 1x Sol Ring 1x Black Lotus 1x Mox Emerald 1x Mox Ruby 1x Mox Sapphire 1x Mox Jet 1x Mox Pearl SB 3x Counterspell 2x Red Elemental Blast 2x Blue Elemental Blast 2x Nevinyrrals Disk 1x Mana Drain 1x Strip Mine 1x Mirror Universe 3x Energy Flux
World Class Old School Deck Box!! MUST SEE!

This amazing deck box has Markus Lundqvist as it's proud owner. He has been having it decorated by the original MTG artists with help from his friend Jason Savage. I was very happy to meet Jason and see this amazing work of art/creativity in person. Congrats Markus on having the foresight to create such an amazing piece of MTG history!! Apparently all the artists are already familiar with THIS exact box and follow it's journey through history. I gave Markus a recommendation of doing an Amy Weber Time Walk image in the blank section remaining. If he takes the suggestion perhaps I'll have my own tie to this amazing piece. Old School 93/94 Deck Tech (BW Shahrazad)

14:20
NOTE: This build is VERY premature... it's FAR from done. I'm only posting this list to show you guys what I'm working on. I wanted to see if anybody else wanted to start testing with this as well. This is a Black and White deck meant for the Old School (1993/1994) format of Magic the Gathering. This is a deck I built and I have been play testing and refining lately which at this moment I have not seen/heard of any other lists like this yet. My play testing so far seems to show this deck has a LOT of potential as it's been hammering some of my other top Old School decks. I decided to build an Old School deck with Shahrazad after seeing a deck with it win the Old School players Ball and hearing about other finishes as well. I can definitely say Shahrazad is a FUN card to play! Turbo Stasis 2.0, a Magic Old School deck (93/94 format)

20:59
This is the last version of this Old School format deck that I'll be posting on YouTube, because this deck is definitely lethal and possibly Tier 1 now. I ditched white and went straight for mono-blue aggressive lockdown with Stasis and it worked! Unlike previous Stasis builds this deck can aggressively drop a Stasis with only a few blue left on the table because it has enough tricks to maintain that Stasis. The kill is done via Black Vise which 93/94 format foolishly allows 4 copies of. That's why this deck can now exist and operate on a mana curve much faster than previous Stasis builds. Follow me on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/edwin_the_magic_engineer/ Here is the (updated) deck list: Turbo Stasis 2.0 (By Edwin) (Spells) 4x Stasis 4x Black Vise 4x Winter Orb 4x Howling Mine 4x Boomerang 3x Power Sink 2x Reset 2x Twiddle 2x Relic Barrier 2x Copy Artifact 1x Time Vault 1x Chaos Orb 1x Timetwister 1x Ancestral Recall 1x Mana Drain 1x Icy Manipulator (Mana Sources) 16 Island 1x Black Lotus 1x Sol Ring 1x Mox Sapphire 1x Mox Pearl 1x Mox Jet 1x Mox Ruby 1x Mox Emerald (Sideboard) 4x Unsummon 3x Blue Elemental Blast 3x Meekstone 2x Twiddle 1x Time Walk 1x Power Sink 1x Icy Manipulator
ARE YOU TIRED of scammers online and people trying to sell fake cards?!?

21:24
My special guest Tavis King (well known for his misprint collection, efforts in counterfeit detection, and WoTC history) walks us through a few tips for detecting false/fake online sales of cards for Magic the Gathering. He also shows us some examples of counterfeit cards using actual fakes he owns talks about how to detect that they are fake. Valuable information for anybody who's putting their hard earned money into their hobby for collecting, investing, or playing reasons. Nobody wants to be ripped off. Please note that I'm indeed a huge advocate for proxies and that a PROXY is not the same thing as a COUNTERFEIT. A proxy is clearly marked to be a proxy. It makes no direct attempt to pass as a real card. It can have similar art or markings... but it's clearly marked to be a proxy and not a real card. A counterfeit is a card that makes it's best attempt to be passed as a real card. Old School 93/94 Deck Tech (Budget Green)

22:38
Here is the latest in my series of Budget Old School decks for the 1993 to 1994 format. This deck went a little higher on cost so it could include 4 copies of Berserk, but with reprints those are much lower in price these days and can be had for the same price of many Standard/Modern staples so I think the "Budget" term still applies. This deck is INDEED very good. I crushed quite a few other Old School decks with it because that creature beatdown is just so hard to stop. Berserk is a house that you can certainly build a deck upon, even without any power 9 or cards greater than $100 each. As always, this is just a starting point. Feel free to take this list and change it, use it as you see fit. My point in making this video is PROVING that Old School is a balanced format that does NOT require you to empty your bank account to play and be competitive.
