Real-time event detection for video surveillance applications

Events are detected in real-time in embedded platforms using optimized computer vision and machine learning algorithms. The detection process is based on the ability to detect and track individuals, and analyze their different trajectory and motion patterns. A calibration process helps to provide 3D context to the scene and therefore increasing the detection performance by reducing the number of False Positives. Part of the developments were carried out in the framework of the EU FP7 project P-REACT (www.p-react.eu). The developments are included in the Viulib libraries. Álgebra Lineal en Aplicaciones de Visión Artificial

Se denomina visión artificial a la tecnología que hace que las máquinas vean, y que entiendan lo que ven, utilizando cámaras y sistemas de procesamiento. Se aplica en sectores tan variados como la automoción (para detectar peatones, vehículos, reconocer las señales), en navegación automática (drones voladores), reconstrucción 3D y realidad aumentada, o seguridad (reconocimiento facial, detección de personas y eventos), etc. Todos estos sistemas se basan en algoritmos y técnicas que hacen uso de una variedad de disciplinas matemáticas, entre ellas, el álgebra lineal. Con el álgebra se puede definir, por ejemplo, el proceso que gobierna la proyección de elementos 3D del mundo real en imágenes 2D. A partir de este conocimiento se pueden diseñar técnicas como la calibración o la reproyección, con las que se puede invertir el proceso y determinar la posición y el tamaño 3D de los objetos del mundo (por ejemplo las personas) a partir de sus imágenes 2D. El conocimiento del álgebra permite al investigador utilizar las librerías de programación que implementan estas rutinas y aplicarlas exitosamente en el diseño de nuevas aplicaciones.

Real-time vehicle detection and lane detection for ADAS

Single camera detection of vehicles and lanes, using Viulib computer vision libraries (www.viulib.org). This algorithm can be run into embedded systems, including Android and iOS devices. The system is able to detect the presence of multiple cars, track their position, and locate them into detected lanes. The distance to the vehicles is computed using a vanishing point-based calibration of the scene. The lanes are modelled as parabolic curves in the bird's-eye view of the road. Ultra-fast linear algebra operations are used to minimize the computational load of the algorithm, which can run below 1 ms in most CPUs. This method does not use special HW so it can be deployed easily on any platform or architecture and can be attached to ADAS systems that work with camera only sensors, or in combination with range sensors. Deep Learning for Uncalibrated Gaze Estimation and Fatigue Detection

This video illustrates the work we are carrying out in the field of Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) using single camera set-ups, and our latest advances in computer vision and machine learning. Driver attention is monitored by means of estimating the head pose and gaze estimation, for which we use deep learning methods for training inference models. The fatigue of the driver can be also measured processing the observed amplitude of the eyes, which provide information on blinking patterns we can correlate with fatigue levels. Real-Time Stereo Visual Odometry and 3D Mapping for Autonomous Navigation

On the one hand, the feature-based matching method, that leads to a sparse optical flow, which is colored according to the depth computed via triangulation. Real-time visual odometry and dense stereo matching

This video shows a stereo visual odometry algorithm embedded on the Taxisat vehicle (http://www.taxisat.net/). The visual odometry method uses sparse feature points for egomotion computation and it is based on a new spatiotemporal framework (submitted for publication) that can be used to speedup most visual odometry algorithms. Pixelwise Annotator for Ground Truth Generation

Pixelwise annotation tool, using Viulib computer vision libraries (www.viulib.org). This tool provides an easy-to-use graphical user interface for efficient annotation of images at pixel level. The use of superpixels algorithms allows to quickly define all the objects in the scene with high precision. The tool contains a number of features to simplify and speed up the annotation process, such as possibility of choosing different superpixels algorithms and resolution, filling of predefined contours, and use of drawing layers. Automatic segmentation of the image using deep learning technology is included. The user can ask for a pre-annotated result, which is computed using trained neural networks of high accuracy. Then, this result can be modified and refined by the user if neccessary. Annotation times are greatly reduced using this option. Anomaly Event Detection using Spatio-Temporal Motion Patterns

The importance of anomaly event detection is growing up in recent years due to the improvement of security and safety in video surveillance systems. We focus on the assumption that the exhibition frequency is the essential characteristic of an event to be normal or abnormal. This application proposes an on-line and real-time normality modelling algorithm to deal with the anomaly detection problem in complex and crowded environments. Actions or events are interpreted as a set of spatio-temporal motion patterns in a neighbourhood, where a bag of words (BOV) approach is used to define a dictionary of common motion patterns. Them, these actions are modelled using a probabilistic framework in order to obtain the probability of being an abnormal behaviour. This anomaly probability is based on a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) which is able to add new behaviours appearing in the environment. Interactive Fire Spread Simulations for VR

Virtual Reality training for fire fighters and managers has two main advantages. On one hand, it supports the simulation of complex scenarios like big cities, where a fire cannot be simulated in the real world. On the other hand, fire fighting VR simulators allow trainees to experience situations as similar as possible to real fire, reducing the probability of accidents when they are practising exercises with real fire. The success of the Virtual Reality training tools also depends on how close to reality the simulation process is. This work provides fire spread algorithms for forest and urban environments, which can be used at interactive rates. Due to the interactive nature of the algorithms, the users are able to fight the fire by throwing extinguishing agents. Although the algorithms assume many simplifications of the problem, their behaviour is satisfactory. This is due to the effcient management of the cell states in a 3 m. x 3 m. cell grid. Also the variables that have more influence in fire propagation constitute the core of the algorithms. The overall system deals with user extinguishment actions, natural and artificial firebreaks, variable wind conditions (even at cell level) and non-contiguous fire propagation (embers, spotting fires). The unified forest/urban model leads to a object oriented architecture which supports the fire propagation algorithms. This also allows the system to compute effciently mixed forest-urban environments. Visualization of meteorological data in the Basque Country: weather radar and weather stations

Analysis of the data gathered by the weather radar on Mount Kapildui: The radar gets reflectivity data and other variables continuously from its surroundings up to a range of 300 km. These data are processed and filtered to correct some errors such as those due to clutter. Clutter is mainly caused by reflections of the radar signals on the terrain and originates incorrect reflectivity readings. Meteorological data visualization and georeferencing: The geographical location of all sensors represent all visual information on the same map and analyze their interactions. A digital elevation model of the Basque Country with orthophotograph-based textures is used as a base for presentation. The data coming from the stations are rendered into an interpolated texture and mapped on the virtual terrain.

Traffic sign detection and recognition has become a trending topic in computer vision due to the interest of the industry, the advances in computer vision methods and the reduced costs of vision sensors. In Vicomtech we are working on the methods for the detection, tracking and recognition of traffic signs in road sequences. One of the most important aspects that conditions the design is its applicability in real scenarios, like the one shown in the video, in which the illumination conditions vary significantly from one frame to another. This reconstruction generates an animated skeleton which represents the movements and poses of the player, and the trajectory of the ball, both in a 3D environment. Lane tracking - Multiple lanes and curvature

This video shows a lane detection, tracking and modeling approach that is able to model multiple lanes (ego-lane and lateral lanes), estimate their existence confidence, and other parameters, such as their curvature. The view distance of the lanes is also estimated according to the available lane marking measurements. Vehicle detection techniques can be used on top of this lane tracking method, in order to locate vehicles inside lanes and then provide a better estimation of the driving situation. The method has been implemented using C++ implementations of computer vision techniques, and it is included in the Viulib(R) SDK by Vicomtech-IK4. LEAGE PROJECT -  LEArning Games for older Europeans

Leage is a virtual reality game developed for MS Kinect and Digital TV to foster lifelong learning among elder people. Gerontology research and technologies so far compensate for physical, perceptual and cognitive decline, but rarely focus on enhancement of opportunities and motivation to connect people and provide lifelong learning. Existing learning opportunities mostly address younger social groups and they mainly presuppose physical presence in a classroom or ICT skills (eLearning), both forming a barrier for elders to attend. Moreover elders usually lack motivation to learn because topics provided aren't considered appropriate for their age. LEAGE proposes novel ICT based opportunities for lifelong learning for elders in Europe by focusing on their attractiveness and accessibility, applying the most novel learning theories into the field of gerontology. LEAGE will provide elders with educational social networking games that will help them improve their competences by practicing and widening basic skills (on health, travel, foreign languages, folklore and technology). Two popular delivery platforms will be used, Digital TV and MS Kinect, as means for both self-learning (single player games) and social learning (multiple players). Resolving crimes with automatic person detection and re identification

This video presents a feature for management of crime reports, namely, the automatic correlation of crime reports based on person re-identification. Two scenes are presented: a crime scene where car thieves were captured on a video taken by an accidental observer; and a second scene where the same actors are trying to sell a mobile on the street, resulting in a suspicious activity for an accidental citizen. Video and images from both scenes are sent to the police crime management center, currently implemented via the INSPEC2T platform. The person recognition feature of the INSPEC2T platform allows the police operators to get automatic notifications if the same person gets identified in images from different incident reports. As such, the operator gets automatic notification of related incidents or crimes and can proceed with the resolution of the related crime cases. Besides the correlation of apparently not related incidents, the person re-identification feature may help to encounter missing persons or to reveal suspect criminals. The software accurately compares the input point cloud with reference CAD data, detecting defects produced during the manufacturing process. It has been designed to deliver the maximum performance and accuracy required to satisfy the highest industry standards, reducing to the minimum the time needed during on-site quality controls. The results of the measurements are stored in the cloud providing new ways to access, share and analyse the data. Precise eye gaze tracking technology can be used in several sectors such as advance HMI. Vicomtech-IK4 is working on a complete solution for high precision eye tracking and gaze estimation using Pupil Centre Corneal Reflection technique (PCCR). A light source is used to cause reflection patterns on the cornea and pupil of the tested person. A camera is then used to capture an image of the eye. Real-time accurate egomotion estimation for trains using optical flow

The accurate estimation of the speed of a train is of critical importance for security and efficiency issues in railway transportation. The traction power is directly affected by the correct estimation of the actual speed of the train, specially in transitions from stopping to moving situations. Traditional sensors are costly and some of them (like wheel encoders) can provide very erroneous measurements in adverse weather conditions due to sliperage, etc. In Vicomtech we are developing a vision-based system that uses optical flow to determine the egomotion of the camera installed in the train. As shown in the videos, the method is based on the determination of the apparent motion of point-wise features of the image from one frame to the next one in the sequence. That information can lead to the computation of the motion of the camera by means of projective geometry primitives.
