W.F. Bach, Sonata in C minor for Viola and Harpsichord

18:06
Netanel Pollak- viola Natalie Rotenberg- harpsichord Recorded at the Eden-Tamir Music Center, Jerusalem Video and sound: Tom Zylbersztein Adagio e Mesto - 0:18 Allegro non troppo - 04:46 Allegro Scherzando - 12:26 ****************************** Very little is known about this piece, even the composer's identity is doubtful. It is, however, a lovely late-Baroque sonata, full of emotions, drama, and surprises. Here is some information from Music4Viola.info - a great website for violists who want to enrich their repertoire: "The authorship of the Sonata in C minor is controversial. It is handed down in two contemporary transcripts: An anonymous score copy is part of a collection manuscript with trio sonatas by Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach in the Library of Congress, Washington (Signature: M412 .A2 B15). In addition, there is a copy of the vote in the Berlin State Library, which is ranked Johann Gottlieb Graun (signature: Mus.ms. 8295/2). Unaware of the Washington source, the sonata was recorded in the Graun catalog raisonné under Av: XV: 20. Two earlier editions (Oxford University Press 1947 and Sikorski 1962) considered each of the two sources and their respective assignments. Using both sources, Richard Gwilt submitted a critical edition in 2008, in which he attributed the assignment to WF Bach based on the lore of the Washington source and stylistic features established. This assignment was criticized by David Schulenberg. He considers JG Graun to be the author of the sonata (see David Schulenberg, "An Enigmatic Legacy: Two Instrumental Works Attributed to Wilhelm Friedemann Bach," in:Bach. Journal of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute , Vol. 41/2, Berea [Ohio] 2010, pp. 24-60, esp. P. 54 f.). " https://music4viola.info/work-info/2/Bach%20W.f./sonata-c-minor-for-viola-and-harpsichord

Francis Bacon scores of unseen unknown works

04:48
More than 100 Francis Bacon paintings are to be revealed for the first time with the completion of a 10-year project to publish a catalogue of every work he made. They include the first in one of his best known and provocative series of paintings, the Screaming Popes, a previously unknown work discovered buried in a private Italian collection. The Francis Bacon estate has now completed the artist’s catalogue raisonné and will publish it next spring to coincide with the anniversary of his death in April 1992. Bacon destroyed many of his paintings and only about half of the 584 that survive are accessible or in circulation. “The stuff that has been written about Bacon, some good and much of it less good, is based on about a third of his work,” said the art historian Martin Harrison, who has spent the last decade attempting to track down every work. “Irrespective of the care taken in documenting his extant oeuvre, the great revelation of the new catalogue raisonné will be that, for the first time, Bacon’s entire output can be seen and assessed. It will, we believe, have a profound effect on the perception of his paintings.” guardian.co.uk

Catalog: Helen Marten. Parrot Problems

Herausgeber: Susanne Pfeffer Redaktion: Anna Sailer Künstler: Helen Marten Beiträger: Diedrich Diederichsen, Johanna Burton, Gespräch zwischen Helen Marten und Susanne Pfeffer ISBN 978-3-86335-876-1 Format: 23,5 x 30,5 cm, Softcover Seiten: 236 S. Close to an artist book, forty pages within the catalogue are designed by Helen Marten featuring unique collages. In insightful and precise essays Diedrich Diederichsen and Johanna Burton focus on the “artist of the hour”, who through processes of manipulation, abstraction and shifting resembles recognisable elements anew; piercing the patina of familiarity covering the density and complexity of our everyday material lives. The catalogue contains many illustrations. Warhol: Then, Now, and Forever

01:06:34
Part of Andy Warhol’s reputation rests on having turned his disordered life into a kind of performance, and yet some of the most important scholarship on the artist involves documenting his activity with rigorous accuracy. To celebrate the opening of a major new Warhol retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, we ask what is most compelling today: Warhol’s chaotic life-as-art, or his individual works, or something else entirely? To answer these questions we speak with three figures who see his life from different perspectives. Vincent Fremont was formerly the Vice President of Andy Warhol Enterprises and the executive manager of the artist’s studio. Following Warhol’s death in 1987, he was instrumental in forming the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Sally King-Nero has been the Executive Editor of the artist’s catalog raisonné and Curator of Drawings and Photographs at the Andy Warhol Foundation for over 25 years. They are joined by artist and Sotheby’s Institute of Art professor Stephan Pascher. The discussion is hosted by Morgan Falconer, Acting Director of the MA in Contemporary Art program at Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York.

His art training was at the Royal College of Art. He was apprenticed to William Morris in 1882. It was Morris’s influence that caused him to diversify his art. He was famous as an accomplished etcher and lithographer and his favourite subjects included powerful depictions of ship building and heavy industry, and the labourers involved in such work. However, his efforts in the fields of design are less well known. He produced designs for furniture, jewellery, and textiles, and he made some large scale stained glass panels for Tiffany’s. Brangwyn fulfilled many commissions to produce large scale murals for public interior spaces, the most high profile of which was for the House of Commons in London for which he completed 18 large scale panels on the theme of the British Empire which was rejected by the commissioning commitee but became the subject of fierce bidding by many other institutions. To add to his achievements, Brangwyn was also an official war artist during the 1st World War. He excelled in etching, doing hundreds on a wide variety of subjects. When The Studio started their series of Famous Etchers, you-know-who was #1 (and one of only two artists to be given two volumes). In 1926, The Studio published The Etchings of Frank Brangwyn - a catalogue raisonne, with reproductions of over 330 etchings. He went on to become the first artist to be honoured with a retrospective at the Royal Academy during his lifetime, in 1952, and he is well represented abroad in countless public collections. There is a museum dedicated to his work in Bruges, and he donated works to the Musée de la Ville at Orange in France in 1947. In England there is also a large collection held at the William Morris Museum in Walthamstow. Frank Brangwyn died on June 11, 1956." --- SUBSCRIBE: www.youtube.com/c/LearnFromMasters?sub_confirmation=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LearnFromMasters/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learnfrommasters/ Contact: [email protected] LIST OF ARTISTS already posted on LearnFromMasters: https://goo.gl/hri4HE --- Thank you so much for your support! #LearnFromMasters #BritishPainter #OnlineArtGallery #CollectionOfPaintings #ArtHistory #FrankBrangwyn

Roberta Smith - Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art 2014

01:11:11
"Criticism in the Expanded Field" Roberta Smith will talk about how she became an art critic; her responsibilities as she sees them as well as the workaday nature of newspaper criticism, how her job and view of her job has changed over time and how both have been affected by academia, by social media and the globalized big-spending art world/market. Roberta Smith was born in New York City in 1947 and raised in Lawrence, Kansas and graduated from Grinnell College, Iowa in 1969. She has written art criticism for the New York Times since October 1986. She was art critic for the Village Voice from 1981 to 1985 and in the 1970s, wrote for Artforum, Art in America and Arts Magazine. She worked on the Donald Judd catalog raisonnè and has contributed essays to museum catalogs on various artists, including Judd, Alex Katz, Elizabeth Murray and Cy Twombly. Smith has lectured widely and taught at the School of Visual Arts, NYC and the Rhode Island School of Design.
