Between Heaven and Hell: The Drawings of Jusepe de Ribera LONG VERSION
Drawing played a central role in the art of Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652). Born in Valencia, Ribera spent most of his career in Naples where he significantly influenced the course of artistic production in the seventeenth century. Although little is known of his youth, training, and journey from Spain to Italy, Ribera is recorded in Rome in 1606, in Parma in 1611, and in Naples from 1616 until his death in 1652. After arriving in Italy, Ribera encountered the revolutionary paintings of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610), whose distinctive qualities Ribera adopted in his own work, prompting him to be recognized as a Caravaggesque artist. Yet unlike Caravaggio, who famously did not make drawings on paper, Ribera was both an extraordinary painter and a prolific graphic artist. He produced a remarkable corpus of drawings as well as an important group of prints, and it is the strength of his works on paper – in addition to his paintings – that sets Ribera apart from his Caravaggist contemporaries. "Between Heaven and Hell: The Drawings of Jusepe de Ribera" coincides with the joint publication by the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Meadows Museum of the first complete catalogue raisonné of the artist’s drawings. The study is authored by Dr. Gabriele Finaldi, former deputy director of the Museo del Prado and now director of the National Gallery in London, together with Dr. Edward Payne, former Meadows/Mellon/Prado curatorial fellow and now the senior curator of Spanish art at Auckland Castle in County Durham, as well as Doña Elena Cenalmor Bruquetas from the Museo del Prado. A total of 157 autograph sheets have been identified and catalogued by the authors, although Ribera certainly produced many more drawings during his lifetime, perhaps even double the number that survives. Sheets by Ribera are widely dispersed in public and private collections throughout the world. This exhibition showcases highlights by Ribera from collections in Canada, France, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Drawings are displayed in the context of related paintings and prints, and the exhibition is organized not chronologically but thematically in order to create striking juxtapositions between works across the trajectory of Ribera’s career. "Between Heaven and Hell" celebrates the variety of Ribera’s drawings, the technical skill in his use of pen, ink, and chalk, and the extraordinary originality of his subject matter, spanning anatomical figure studies and lively street scenes, to capricious subjects and scenes of martyrdom and torture. On view at the Meadows Museum will be a total of forty-six drawings, twelve prints, eleven paintings, and one relief sculpture. Curated by Dr. Finaldi at the Prado venue and Dr. Payne at the Meadows venue, the project represents a continuation of the longstanding and productive collaboration between the two museums. "Between Heaven and Hell: The Drawings of Jusepe de Ribera" is the first major monographic exhibition organized on the artist in the United States in the last twenty-five years, and the most comprehensive presentation ever dedicated to the artist’s drawings. This exhibition has been organized by the Meadows Museum and the Museo Nacional del Prado and funded by a generous gift from The Meadows Foundation.

EXHIBITION CATALOGUE «LEGENDS AND FAIRY TALES IN URAL STONE CARVINGS» LIECHTENSTEIN NATIONAL MUSEUM JULY 8 — OCTOBER 18, 2015 The book has been designed specifically for the exhibition, which opened on 8 July in Liechtenstein National Museum. All the stone sculptures featured in the exhibition are described in the catalogue. The project team worked hard to provide as much information as possible to the visitors. Apart from the standard introduction panel for the whole exhibition, every work has a detailed description providing information about the fairy tales and the place of a specific character in folklore and unique stone carving techniques. It goes without saying that a single visit will not be enough to closely study the story behind each work and its unique features, and this is where the exhibition catalogue will come in handy. After purchasing this catalogue, visitors will be able to refer to it to find out more about the exhibits and refresh their memories of the exhibition. The text is available in four languages – Russian, German, English and Chinese – which makes it a useful source of information for visitors from all over the world. This catalogue also makes an exceptional present and will be a great addition to any collection of art books. Stone carving is a popular art in Russia and in the Urals in particular, but it is not as well-known in other parts of the world, which makes every encounter with this unique technique truly unforgettable. In the modern world dominated by digital technology, it is reassuring to learn about the craftsmen’s meticulous work that helps unveil the natural beauty of stones through the amazing stone sculptures. With the help of the book dedicated to the ‘Legends and fairy tales in Ural stone carvings’ exhibition you will be able to preserve the unique experience of the encounter with the world of stone and fairy tales forever.

DULWICH PICTURE GALLERY: Complete Illustrated Catalogue
DULWICH PICTURE GALLERY: Complete Illustrated Catalogue DR RICHARD BERESFORD Book Number: 72513 Product format: Hardback Dulwich Picture Gallery is England's oldest public art gallery, founded in 1811, and is still extremely popular. It regularly has special exhibitions on a theme, and is a favourite venue both for children, who love the special activities, and adults who want the chance to try their hand at painting in the purpose-built annexe. This is the first fully-illustrated catalogue of the entire collection, including paintings which are seldom on show. Among the most renowned pictures are Rembrandt's Girl at a Window, Rubens' Venus, Mars and Cupid, Poussin's The Triumph of David and Jean-Antoine Watteau's Les Plaisirs du Bal. The introduction to the catalogue tells the fascinating and extremely complicated story of how pictures, originally collected for the King of Poland in the 1790s, joined Dulwich College's 17th century holdings. When Poland was partitioned and the King was forced to abdicate, an alternative home was found for the paintings at Dulwich. From then on, the history of the pictures is gripping but tortuous, but it ended with the whole collection being inherited by Noel Desenfans and then Sir Francis Bourgois. The gallery itself, specially commissioned to hold the collection, was designed by the great Regency architect Sir John Soane and it must surely be the only gallery in the world where its founders are interred in their own mausoleum right at the centre of the building, together with Desenfans' wife! The entries here are arranged alphabetically, giving title, date, attribution, medium, inventory number and dimensions, with a brief biographical note for each artist. A treasury of art. 320 pages 29.5cm x 26cm with 656 paintings, 150 of which are in colour, with lists of trustees and subscribers, list of abbreviations, notes, a history of the gallery and Chronology of Acquisitions. Francis Bacon scores of unseen unknown works
More than 100 Francis Bacon paintings are to be revealed for the first time with the completion of a 10-year project to publish a catalogue of every work he made. They include the first in one of his best known and provocative series of paintings, the Screaming Popes, a previously unknown work discovered buried in a private Italian collection. The Francis Bacon estate has now completed the artist’s catalogue raisonné and will publish it next spring to coincide with the anniversary of his death in April 1992. Bacon destroyed many of his paintings and only about half of the 584 that survive are accessible or in circulation. “The stuff that has been written about Bacon, some good and much of it less good, is based on about a third of his work,” said the art historian Martin Harrison, who has spent the last decade attempting to track down every work. “Irrespective of the care taken in documenting his extant oeuvre, the great revelation of the new catalogue raisonné will be that, for the first time, Bacon’s entire output can be seen and assessed. It will, we believe, have a profound effect on the perception of his paintings.” guardian.co.uk

Shenkman 2014 - Featuring: Roberta Smith
"Criticism in the Expanded Field" Roberta Smith will talk about how she became an art critic; her responsibilities as she sees them as well as the workaday nature of newspaper criticism, how her job and view of her job has changed over time and how both have been affected by academia, by social media and the globalized big-spending art world/market. Roberta Smith was born in New York City in 1947 and raised in Lawrence, Kansas and graduated from Grinnell College, Iowa in 1969. She has written art criticism for the New York Times since October 1986. She was art critic for the Village Voice from 1981 to 1985 and in the 1970s, wrote for Artforum, Art in America and Arts Magazine. She worked on the Donald Judd catalog raisonnè and has contributed essays to museum catalogs on various artists, including Judd, Alex Katz, Elizabeth Murray and Cy Twombly. Smith has lectured widely and taught at the School of Visual Arts, NYC and the Rhode Island School of Design. She received art criticism grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1975 and 1980. In 2003, she received the Frank Jewett Mather Award for Art Criticism from the College Art Association. Smith lives in New York City with her husband, Jerry Saltz, senior art critic for New York Magazine. The annual Shenkman Lecture was established in 2007 and is made possible through the support of Dasha Shenkman, a Canadian art collector who lives in the United Kingdom.

An Introduction to Agnes Martin
Curator Tracey Bashkoff introduces Agnes Martin, an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum tracing Martin’s career from her early experiments of the 1950s through her mature oeuvre and final paintings. Visitors have an opportunity to explore the artist’s subtle and evocative striped paintings and her signature grid-pattern works. The artist's restrained style was underpinned by a personal conviction in the emotive and expressive power of art. Solomon R. Warhol: Then, Now, and Forever
Part of Andy Warhol’s reputation rests on having turned his disordered life into a kind of performance, and yet some of the most important scholarship on the artist involves documenting his activity with rigorous accuracy. To celebrate the opening of a major new Warhol retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, we ask what is most compelling today: Warhol’s chaotic life-as-art, or his individual works, or something else entirely? To answer these questions we speak with three figures who see his life from different perspectives. Vincent Fremont was formerly the Vice President of Andy Warhol Enterprises and the executive manager of the artist’s studio. Following Warhol’s death in 1987, he was instrumental in forming the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Sally King-Nero has been the Executive Editor of the artist’s catalog raisonné and Curator of Drawings and Photographs at the Andy Warhol Foundation for over 25 years. They are joined by artist and Sotheby’s Institute of Art professor Stephan Pascher. The discussion is hosted by Morgan Falconer, Acting Director of the MA in Contemporary Art program at Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York.

LECTURE: Scott A. Shields - Richard Diebenkorn: Beginnings, 1942-1955
Scott A. Shields, Ph.D., Associate Director and Chief Curator, Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento Exhibition curator and catalog author Scott A. Shields focuses on Richard Diebenkorn’s evolution to maturity and the art that precedes his shift to figuration. These early pieces evolved rapidly from representational landscape scenes and portraits of military colleagues, to semi-abstract and Surrealist-inspired depictions of topography and the human form, to mature Abstract Expressionist paintings. Many works will be unfamiliar to the public, yet they offer a fuller picture of the Portland-born artist’s precocious achievements and set the stage for what was yet to come. Presented in conjunction with the special exhibition Richard Diebenkorn: Beginnings, 1942–1955. Special thanks to Pomegranate Communications for their generous support of this lecture. This lecture was recorded on September 8, 2018, in Portland Art Museum's Whitsell Auditorium

Mies 1:1 - The Golf Club Project
Lecture date: 2014-02-18 Christiane Lange, Julian Heynen & Paul Robbrecht Roundtable Discussion Chair - Valentin Bontjes van Beek The design for the Clubhouse of the Krefelder Golfclub (1930) by Mies van der Rohe was never built, until 2013, when it was constructed as a life-size model that could be entered. MIES 1:1 The Golf Club Project is an unusual experiment, an architecture exhibition made up of only the 1:1 model. Curator Christiane Lange invited Belgian architect Paul Robbrecht (Robbrecht en Daem architects, Gent) to develop the model’s structure, based on the original plans. The project was completed in May 2013, on the original site in Krefeld. As an example of mature architectural language, the 1:1 model distils Mies’ concepts and can be seen as a unique object d’architecture. Christiane Lange who initiated and curated the project will speak about the historic and artistic background as well as the meaning and public reception of the 1:1 model. Christiane Lange holds a masters in art history and history from the Universities at Bonn. As a member of the German Research Foundation Project Catalog Raisonné of furniture and furniture design by Mies van der Rohe, she catalogues all furniture designs, realised and un-realised, by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The Project is led by Wolf Tegethoff of the Zentralinstitut fuer Kunstgeschichte, Munich, Germany. Christiane is a founding member of 'Projekt MIK e. V.' Krefeld, Germany. Her research, exhibitions and films focus on the European work of Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich. Christiane’s most recent publications are Mies van der Rohe, Architecture for the silkindustrie and Mies in Krefeld, a documentary film. Julian Heynen will present 'Making Models – A Way of Talking About the World', specifically drawing attention to the work of Thomas Schütte as an example for how models can be used in the neighbouring field of contemporary art. Julian Heynen is a curator and writer specialising in contemporary art and currently artistic director at large of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf. In the 1980s and 1990s he was director of exhibitions at Haus Lange and Haus Esters, two villas designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1927–30. Paul Robbrecht will present 'The Reconstruction of an Architectural Thought' discussing his approach to the source materials and how he approximated the 80 year old designs. Co-founder of Robbrecht en Daem architecten, Paul Robbrecht is currently International Fellow of the RIBA, guest professor, University of Ghent and member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts.
