Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/09/part-7-what-is-sqlmetal.html In this video we will discuss 1. What is SqlMetal 2. How to use SqlMetal What is SqlMetal SqlMetal is a command-line code generation tool used to generate LINQ-to-SQL classes. There are 2 ways to generate LINQ-to-SQL classes 1. Uisng Visual Studio OR 2. Using SqlMetal What is the windows path where I can find SqlMetal.exe On my machine SqlMetal.exe is present in the following location C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin How to use SqlMetal.exe to generate the LINQ-to-SQL classes Step 1 : Run Visual Studio Command prompt as an Administrator Step 2 : In C:\ create a new folder. Name it SqlMetalGeneratedFiles. This is the folder where we will store the generated dbml file. Step 3 : Type the following command and press enter SqlMetal.exe /server:localhost /database:Sample /namespace:Demo /dbml:C:\SqlMetalGeneratedFiles\Sample.dbml /Context:SampleDataContext In this example we are using the following options server - Database server name. In our example, the database server is a local server, hence we specified localhost. database - database name dbml - The name of the generated dbml file namespace - Namespace for the generated classes context - Name of the data context class For the full list of all available options that can be used with SqlMetal.exe, please check the following MSDN article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/vstudio/bb386987(v=vs.100).aspx Navigate to C:\SqlMetalGeneratedFiles\ and you should find Sample.dbml Let's now discuss using Sample.dbml file in an ASP.NET Web Application. Step 1 : Create a new empty asp.net web application project. Name it Demo. Step 2 : In the web.config file, copy and paste the following connection string [connectionStrings] [add name="SampleConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=(local);Initial Catalog=Sample;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /] [/connectionStrings] Step 3 : Right click on the Demo project, in solution explorer and select Add - Existing Item. Navigate to C:\SqlMetalGeneratedFiles and add Sample.dbml. Step 4 : Add a WebForm to the project. Drag and drop a GridView control on the WebForm. Copy and paste the following code in the code-behind file. using System; using System.Configuration; namespace Demo { public partial class WebForm1 : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { string cs = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["SampleConnectionString"].ConnectionString; using (SampleDataContext dbContext = new SampleDataContext(cs)) { GridView1.DataSource = dbContext.Employees; GridView1.DataBind(); } } } }

The view then renders the data. Model can be entities or business objects. In part 7, we have built Employee entity. public class Employee { public int EmployeeId { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Gender { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } } In this video, we will discuss, retrieving data from a database table tblEmployee using entity framework. In a later video, we will discuss using business objects as our model. Step 1: Install entity framework, if you don't have it installed already on your computer. At the time of this recording the latest version is Using nuget package manager, is the easiest way to install. A reference to EntityFramework.dll is automatically added. Open visual studio - Tools - Library Package Manager - Manage NuGet Packages for Solution Step 2: Add EmployeeContext.cs class file to the Models folder. Add the following "using" declaration. using System.Data.Entity; Copy & paste the following code in EmployeeContext.cs public class EmployeeContext : DbContext { // Replace square brackets, with angular brackets public DbSet[Employee] Employees {get; set;} } EmployeeContext class derives from DbContext class, and is responsible for establishing a connection to the database. So the next step, is to include connection string in web.config file. Step 3: Add a connection string, to the web.config file, in the root directory. Step 4: Map "Employee" model class to the database table, tblEmployee using "Table" attribute as shown below. [Table("tblEmployee")] public class Employee { public int EmployeeId { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Gender { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } } Note: "Table" attribute is present in "System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations.Schema" namespace. Step 5: Make the changes to "Details()" action method in "EmployeeController" as shown below. public ActionResult Details(int id) { EmployeeContext employeeContext = new EmployeeContext(); Employee employee = employeeContext.Employees.Single(x =] x.EmployeeId == id); return View(employee); } Step 6: Finally, copy and paste the following code in Application_Start() function, in Global.asax file. Database class is present "in System.Data.Entity" namespace. Existing databases do not need, database initializer so it can be turned off. Database.SetInitializer[MVCDemo.Models.EmployeeContext](null); That's it, run the application and notice that the relevant employee details are displayed as expected.

SQLAlchemy: Connecting to a database
Learn how to connect to your database: https://www.datacamp.com/courses/introduction-to-relational-databases-in-python In the python world, there are several great tools that we can use when working with databases. One of those is SQLAlchemy that we will be using throughout this course. SQLAlchemy will allow us to generate SQL queries by writing Python code. You should still consider learning how to write queries in SQL as well. SQLAlchemy has two main components. The part we will be focusing on is often referred to as "core" part of SQLAlchemy. It's really focused around the relational model of the database. Additionally, there is the Object Relational Model or ORM part of SQLAlchemy that is really focused around data models and classes that you as a programmer create. There are many different types of databases, and each database type has its own quirks and unique capabilities. You'll commonly find SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle when working with data. SQLAlchemy provides a way to operate across all of these database types in a consistent manner. To connect to a database, we need a way to talk to it, and an engine provides that common interface. To create an engine, we import the create_engine function from sqlalchemy; we then use the create_engine function and supply it a connection string that provides the details needed to connect to a database. Finally once we have an engine, we are ready to make a connection using the connect method on the engine. It's worth noting that SQLAlchemy won't actually make the connection until we give it some work to execute. So to review, an engine is the common interface to the database, which requires a connection string to provide the details used to find and connect to the database. Before we go any further, let's talk a bit more about connection strings. In their simplest form, they tell us what kind of database we are talking to and how we should access it. In this example, you can see that we are using the sqlite database driver and the database file named census_nyc.sqlite which is in the current directory. Now that we have an engine and a connection, we need to know what tables are in the database. We'll start again by importing the create_engine function and creating an engine to our database. Finally, We can use the table_names method of the engine which returns a list of tables. Once we know what table we want to work on, we need a way to access that table with python. To do that we are going to use a handy process called reflection, which reads the database and builds a Table object that we can use in our code. We already have created our engine, so we begin by importing the MetaData and Table objects needed for reflection. The MetaData object is a catalog that stores database information such as tables so we don't have to keep looking them up. To reflect the table, we initialize a MetaData object. Next, we use the SQLAlchemy Table object and provide the table name we got earlier from the table_names method. We also supply our metadata instance, and then instruct it to autoload the table using the engine. Finally, we can use the function repr to view the details of our table that we stored as census. This allows us to see the names of the columns, such as 'state' and 'sex', along with their types, such as VARCHAR and INTEGER. This process of reflection may seem a bit of an overhead, but it will make understanding your databases and extracting information from them far easier downstream. Now it's your turn to practice writing connection strings, connecting to databases and reflecting tables. Then we'll be back here writing our first SQL queries.

Connecting to a SQL Server Database with C#
Learn C#: http://learncsharp.org In this video you will learn how to connect to an already existing SQL Server database, read data from that database, and output that data to the console. This example could be leveraged across many platforms and is just one example of how data can be retrieved from a SQL Server database using C#. The idea behind my videos as http://learncsharp.org is to provide you with an experience where we are working together. I'm going to make mistakes, there are going to be bugs in my code, but it's much more like paired programming than a scripted tutorial. It's more realistic.

Getting Started - installing log4net, initial configuration and getting it running in your code. 2. .NET 4.5 Changes - What additional options you have if you are using .NET 4.5. 3. Appenders - How to log to different data repositories like SQL Server, text files and more. 4. Filters - How to log only the data you want to capture while ignoring the rest. This will cover both the simple options as well as the more advanced possibilities. 5. Log Patterns - Learn how to capture a number of different pieces of data, what the pitfalls are of some data points and how to send data to your data source. 6. Advanced Logging - Take logging to the next level by capturing custom data in your own fields. Even capture data at the time of the error without any extra configuration. 7. Wrap Up - Review what has been learned and identify how to move forward with log4net. This video course is easy for a beginner to get started with but even if you didn't know anything coming in, if you follow the steps outlined in the video, you will become an advanced log4net user by the end of the video. The entire video is a hands-on demonstration of not just what to do but how to do it. You will be able to follow along with the video with ease. Also provided is a link to the source code for this video. The source code has been tagged at the end of each section to indicate where you can revert to in order to see the code at any point in the video. SAM Template Rematch - SolarWinds Lab Episode #61
Learn more: http://slrwnds.com/Lab61Episode The power of monitoring with SAM lies in the ability to create templates - collections of monitoring components which collect data from all manner of sources, from services to logfiles to synthetic tests that impersonate a real user's behavior. Being familiar with all the different options to configure these components is essential to creating effective templates. Back in episode 53, SAM Product Manager Steven Hunt and Head Geek Leon Adato dug into each component type and described how they worked. But with over 50 component types there were many left out. In this episode they continue the exploration, looking at port monitors, database query components, and more.
