The fashion industry claims it is being unfairly pillaged for the ‘size 0’ phenomenon. But self regulation has done little to weed out emaciated models. “They have to understand that being thin is our job”, states one size 0 model. But following the death of anorexic model, Ana Carolina Reston, designers are coming under pressure not to use skinny models. Spain banned ultra-thin models from Madrid Fashion Week after complaints they encouraged anorexia. “We didn’t want teenagers to think excessive slimness is a model of beauty”, explains organizer Cuca Solana. But other fashion capitals refuse to follow Spain’s lead. “The whole size 0 thing has come from Hollywood not the catwalks”, complains Hilary Riva, Chief Executive of London Fashion Week. “It’s too simplistic to blame fashion.” SBS Australia - Ref.3432 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. Tel Aviv Fashion Week - Anorexia and Aerial Attacks
In 2013 Israel became the first country in the world to pass legislation banning 'underweight' models. Mere weeks before the law passed, the first Tel Aviv fashion week in 30 years featured typically waifish high-fashion models. Charlet caught a show by Italian giant Moschino just in time for the first rockets to rain down on Tel aviv from Gaza in over 20 years... AP FILE music on catwalks not cleared for use. replace with your own clearable music Rome - 16 July, 2000 20. Various models on the catwalks STORYLINE: Fashion industry representatives and the Italian government signed a self-regulating code for Italy's highly competitive fashion industry on Friday, joining forces in a campaign to combat the phenomenon of anorexic and very thin fashion models. Italian Youth Policy and Sports Minister Giovanna Melandri and Mario Boselli, the president of the Italian Fashion Chamber, jointly signed the code, which calls for more attention to be given to models with a "full-bodied" image and a greater commitment to add larger sizes to fashion collections. The code also requires models to provide medical proof that they are not suffering from eating disorders and bans models under 16-years-old from the catwalk. Melandri, who is herself known for her fashionable outfits, said it was possible to see the difference between models who are naturally thin and those who are making themselves ill to stay slim. "There is a possibility to trace a difference, and trace a border line between a nice skinny girl and a sick girl. We are not imposing standards or aesthetics, we are asking the Italian fashion business to at least try and develop a differentiated idea of beauty," she said. In September, Madrid's Fashion Week banned models with a body mass index of less than 18. Body mass index is a calculation doctors normally apply to study obesity, and anyone with an index below 18.5 is considered underweight. Boselli said that body mass index should not be the only indicator of a model's health and suitability. ""Are we testing also (British fashion model) Naomi Campbell? Probably not. Naomi Campbell is allegedly under 18 as body mass, but as minister Melandri says, we must take consideration not only of this aspect." Ana Carolina Reston, who had worked in China, Turkey, Mexico and Japan for several modelling agencies, died at a hospital in Sao Paulo. Barkan taking photographs of model STORYLINE PHOTOG PROMOTES ANOREXIA AWARENESS An Israeli fashion photographer and model agent is stepping up his campaign against the fashion industry's use of ultra-thin models. Adi Barkan, who has worked in the fashion business for some three decades, is critical of the pressure put on models to be thin and has been campaigning for years for industry standards that ban the use of models suffering from malnutrition. Barkan has called for the use of the Body Mass Index (BMI), an internationally recognised measure of a person's weight in relation to their height, to screen for healthy models. In the coming days he is set to release a campaign featuring three contrasting models; one healthy girl, one girl with a below healthy BMI value and one anorexic girl. The anorexic girl is seen in the campaign poster next to the thin model and the slogan reads: "She is dying to look like her." She said it started from a desire to look like models in magazines. Barkan is personally overseeing the rehabilitation of Barazani and many other sufferers. We want this image to disappear, what we want is a healthy image. Let them be tall and thin but within normal limits, we are not asking for extremes. Interiors of hospital corridor 18. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Gonzalo Morande, Head of Psychiatry, "Nino Jesus" Hospital, Madrid "In magazines, advertisements, one sees people that are ill and who could be some of our patients, these ill people are being used by advertisers. If You Hated The Fashion Industry Before, Wait Till You See This
""We're working in an industry that is perceived as frivolous, and so our concerns are not taken seriously," says model Sara Ziff, who's been the face of Tommy Hilfiger and Banana Republic and walked the runway for Calvin Klein and Chanel. A model since age 14, Ziff exposed ugly industry stories in her 2009 documentary "Picture Me," then founded the non-union workers' group Model Alliance two years ago this month. In a fashion week interview with Salon, Ziff described largely unseen sexual coercion, wage theft and eating disorders; discussed her efforts (in a personal capacity) to foster solidarity between U.S. fashion models and Bangladesh garment workers; and considered what clout her group can bring to bear on the trillion-dollar industry. A condensed version of our conversation follows. How different is the fashion industry from what most people imagine in the U.S.? The modeling industry seems very glamorous, and part of a model's job is to make the work invisible. It's to make, you know, being beautiful and glamorous seem effortless. And so it's not surprising that most people would have trouble seeing modeling as a job, and that the issues like difficulty in some cases getting paid for your work, long working hours, sexual harassment on the job — those are things that are hidden from view. And so I think often people are unsympathetic to models' concerns because the very nature of the job is to exude sort of effortless beauty and glamour."* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down. *Read more here from Josh Eidelson / Salon: http://www.salon.com/2014/02/13/liposuction_eating_disorders_and_sexual_coercion_high_fashions_ugly_secrets/ ********** The Largest Online News Show in the World. Danish fashion magazine Cover has issued a public apology after featuring a shockingly thin model in the latest issue of the publication. The image in question instantly caused an outcry on social media, as many expressed their horror over the model's emaciated frame, spawning the hashtag #covergate as well as a Reddit thread titled "corpse or model?" In response to the backlash, the magazine's founder Malene Malling apologized on Facebook, admitting the publication was at fault for featuring the "all-too-thin" model. Malling wrote, "Today is a sad day for me. On the Cover, we have, through the years, printed tens of thousands of images, but the images of an all-too-thin model in Cover 103 shouldn't be printed." http://www.eonline.com/news/629270/danish-magazine-slammed-for-featuring-emaciated-looking-model-anorexia-is-a-problem?cmpid=rss-000000-rssfeed-365-topstories&utm_source=eonline&utm_medium=rssfeeds&utm_campaign=rss_topstories http://www.wochit.com

French Lawmakers Vote to Ban Anorexic Models
France's lower house of Parliament has approved a measure that would make it a crime to use anorexic models. Other countries including Israel and Spain have also cracked down on the glorification of dangerously thin models. The French measure would only apply within France, but could have symbolic impact beyond because of its outsized influence on the fashion world. Agencies that employ models who are considered too thin could face a fine of up to $81,660 and six months in prison. The new law requires models to undergo regular weight checks. “This is an important message to young women, young women who see these models as an aesthetic ideal,” Health Minister Marisol Touraine said before the measure was approved. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/8tjc9TdzXmc/ http://www.wochit.com

Seeing Life Beyond Anorexia: Brittany
Support StyleLikeU on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/stylelikeu We traveled to London’s Southbank Centre to conduct What’s Underneath interviews as an open call in a public setting. We weren’t sure what to expect, but eager participants stepped up to share their stories as an audience accumulated. Watch six women strip down and open up in our first ever Open Call. At the time this was filmed, Brittany was an inpatient undergoing treatment for anorexia. While on leave for the weekend from the hospital, she serendipitously stumbled into the Fashion Undressed festival, having never seen a What’s Underneath interview before, and bravely stepped up for an unexpected healing experience on her journey toward recovery. Her story is a testament to the atrocity of the fashion industry’s destructive grip on our self worth and well being. An undeniably beautiful and creative force, Brittany lost her entire sense of self to a world of images and messages so intimidating that she thought, ‘If you don’t try and look nice, you can’t really fail at it.’ By age 10, she was preoccupied with her body, and by the time she was in university, extreme dieting was an all-consuming obsession, and she was depressed to the point of barely wanting to live past the next half an hour. Brittany’s awareness of the traps of her illness, is palpable and enlightening. Despite struggling with guilt over the strain her illness put on her parents, she is reclaiming her dreams and ambitions, and learning to love her body for its indelible link to her family. Close up on model eating hamburger STORYLINE ISRAELI FASHION DESIGNERS ADHERE TO NEW LAWS OVER MODEL WEIGHT A new Israeli law prohibits the employment of underweight fashion models. The legislation aims to put a stop to the extremes, and by extension ease the pressure on young girls to emulate the skin-and-bones look in fashion ads, often resulting in dangerous eating disorders. Aspiring 21-year-old model Margaux Stelman knows first hand the danger of being too thin. "My sister passed away from anorexia a couple of years ago and this disease is something that's very close to me," she explained. Margaux's sister, Simone, died of anorexia at the age of 42. Simone, a former model who struggled for years, died from the direct effects of anorexia on her body. "Coming here and doing the exact opposite, showing girls that she can be healthy and be a model anyway, it's really something I want to show," said Stelman during a break in a photo shoot. The law poses a ground-breaking challenge to a fashion industry widely castigated for promoting anorexia and bulimia. It's sponsors say it could become an example for other countries grappling with the spread of the life-threatening eating disorders. It's especially important in Israel, which, like other countries, is obsessed by models, whose every utterance and dalliance is fodder for photo spreads and racy stories in the nation's newspapers. Supermodel Bar Refaeli has achieved the status of a national hero. She is not unnaturally thin. The new law requires models to produce a medical report less than three months old at every shoot for the Israeli market, stating they are not malnourished by World Health Organization standards. The U.N. agency relies on the Body Mass Index (BMI), which is calculated by combining factors of weight and height. A body mass index below 18.5 indicates malnutrition. According to that standard, a woman 1.72 meters tall (5-feet-8) should weigh no less than 119 pounds (54 kilograms). Also, any advertisement published for the Israeli market must have a clearly written notice disclosing if its models were made to look thinner by digital manipulation. The law does not apply to foreign publications sold in Israel. France Weighs Ban on Anorexic Models
French Parliament debated legislation that would mandate modeling agencies routinely verify their models have a body mass index of at least 18 or face fines and possible prison time. France also seeks to block websites that glorified dangerously thin models. Spain, Italy and Israel already have similar laws in place. We look at the story on the Lip News with Nik Zecevic and Jose Marcelino Ortiz. http://thelip.tv/ http://www.youtube.com/theliptv2

A short video of some models battling with anorexia and eating disorders. I know some pictures aren't real, the point is to raise awareness and show that it isn't pleasant, I'm not trying to portray these models in a bad light. Some pictures aren't of anorexics, the point is that it is a video about ana and the things related. Also, the video was NOT made on windows movie maker or whatever before you try to be smart and think you're all 'high-tech'.

Vogue DENYING Models with Eating Disorders—The New Six Point Pledge! Health Initiative
Vogue DENYING Models with Eating Disorders—The New Six Point Pledge! http://bit.ly/SubClevverStyle - Subscribe to ClevverStyle! http://Twitter.com/ClevverTV - Follow Us! Vogue Magazine is changing the rules with their brand new Health Initiative that is bringing to light the unhealthy problems with modeling! The popular fashion magazine unveiled the new six point pledge in June's British Vogue, but the declaration is set to take place across the board for all 19 versions of the mag. There's been years and years of scrutiny on magazines and the modeling industry for portraying unrealistic goals to women with excessive photoshopping and retouching, so it's a wonder that it's taken so long for someone to take some real action. In the 6 point pledge, the 19 Editors in Chief agreed to number one, not knowingly work with models under the age of 16 or who appear to have an eating disorder. The six points go on to include, checking id's when girls come into auditions for a shoot with Vogue magazine and not allowing modeling agents to knowingly send the magazine a girl who is their age mark. They go on to pledge that they will create a mentoring program where wiser models teach the younger girls the importance of a being a healthy model, creating industry-wide awareness of the problems in the modeling world. Vogue even goes as far to challenge designers to change the way they view their sample sizes—encouraging them to look at the damage they cause by having quote, "unrealistically small sizes that limit the range of women who can be photographed." And last but not least, they promise to be ambassadors for the message of healthy body image. I'm Brianna Baxter for Daily Style.

How I Recovered From An Eating Disorder
Hey guys, I wanted to open up to you about something I had dealt with for a large portion of my life. I suffered with anorexia for the majority of my teens, but I am very happy to say that it is not something I have to deal with now. My mindset is in a very different place and I am actually shocked of how little bearing that time in my life plays on my current circumstances. That is why I do feel passionate and open to share my story because I want to give others hope that they can do the same. The first step is always acknowledging there is a problem. How you go about changing your situation is a personal choice. I am not a doctor or a psychologist, but I did recover on my own and found my own way. If you guys would like me to make more videos on the subject, let me know and I definitely will in the future. I probably won't in the next few months since this is not something I really want as a focal point while I am on my contract, but I just wanted to address this now so it kind of clears the air for everything to come. I hope you guys are doing well and thank you so much for all your support. Please feel free to reach out! xo Instagram: @alinamcleod Twitter: @alina_mcleod Facebook: @alinamcleodofficial
