The so-called white label, properly called retailer brand or generic brand or private label, is the trademark of a distribution chain (usually hyper or supermarket, but also large specialized distribution ) with which products from different manufacturers sold. White markings are traditionally considered a strategy B2C (short for Business-to-customer, "Business Customer" in English). Furthermore, the discount stores opt for the store brands with better quality / price ratio. A brand is a major commercial identification and / or set of multiple identifiers to which it relates and provides a product or service in the market. It is a common mistake to confuse the concept of logo as a brand synonymous, the main difference for a brand is that it must be built beyond the visual representation that identifies a company or organization. A logo can be the same brand or be the primary identifier of it in conjunction with other signs as the only name a sales pitch, side graphics, imagery, tone of communication, etc. Be emphasized that not all logo qualifies to be called brand while a mark must be at its minimum trading system not do without a logo. The brand is one or the set of distinctive signs of a product or service in the market. Some people emphasize the psychological aspect of the brand from the experiential aspect. The experimental aspect is the sum of all points of contact with the brand and is known as the brand experience. The psychological aspect, which is sometimes referred to as brand image, is a symbolic construct created within the minds of people and consist of all the information and expectations associated with the product or services. Persons performing brand positioning seeking plan or aligning expectations related to the experience of the brand, creating the impression that the brand associated with a product or service has certain qualities or characteristics that makes it special or unique. A brand is therefore one of the most valuable elements in the advertising issue, as evidenced by what the brand owner is able to offer in the market. The art of creating, innovating and maintaining a brand is called "brand management". A well known brand in the marketplace acquires brand recognition. When brand recognition builds a point where the brand enjoys a critical mass of positive feeling in the market is said to have reached the franchise name. A goal in brand recognition is the identification of a trademark without the present company name. Consumers may see a mark as a value-added important products or services, as often serves to denote a certain attractive quality or characteristic (see also brand promise ). From the perspective of the owners of a brand branded products or services also impose higher prices. When two products are similar but one of them is not associated with a brand (as a general brand, product distribution), people most often choose products more expensive brands based on the quality of the brand or reputation the owner of the mark. The brand name is often used interchangeably between "brand", but rather is used to indicate written or spoken linguistic elements of any product. In this context, a "brand name" constitutes a type of brand, as long as the brand name uniquely identifies the brand owner as the commercial source of products or services. The owner of a trademark may seek to protect the rights of ownership in relation to brand name through trademark registration. The identity of a product or brand attributes are commonly associated with a brand, as the brand owner wants the consumer to perceive the marker and by extension the company, organization, product or service. The brand owner will try to close the gap between brand image and brand identity. An effective brand name achieves a connection between brand personality as perceived in the market and the actual service or product. The brand name should be conceptually included in the target with the product or service (what the company stands for). In addition, the brand name should be addressed to the demographic brand. Commonly, sustainable brand names are easy to remember, transcend trends and have positive connotations. A quick story about retail for sales success, ages ago one of the legacy five-and-dime empires had a poor reputation for customer service. So they launched a campaign to battle their rotting image. The CEO himself went on television announcing he had a phone installed near the front door of every store and ANY customer could use it to call his office directly, if they had a problem. WOW. Sure enough, you visited the stores and each and every one of them had this table top setup right inside the main door. A big picture of the boss with a red phone and big sign that said: "If you're not happy, call me now!" Do you know how many calls he got? NONE! Because next to every table top setup was the store manager who made sure no one went near that phone. The store manager was empowered to solve the customer satisfaction riddle. The whole thing was a marketing success to change their brand image AND it was transformative for the in-store culture as the customer became the focus. Starbucks are a mega force in the coffee world, having well over 11,500 shops worldwide. Their logo has become cemented into the modern high street- with multiple shops readily available in major cities such as London, Paris and New York. Although Starbucks clearly are the biggest grossing company in the restaurant sector of the coffee industry, they were missing a huge market in retail. With brands such as Nescafe and Kenco having the edge over Starbucks with their standard filtered coffee stacking the shelves of Tesco, Morrsions, Asda and Lidl. Starbucks decided to branch out to compete with these companies. Although they seeked help in doing so. That’s when they began their work with London’s famous Pearlfisher branding agency. Pearlfisher have previously worked with a number of easily recognisable and everyday brands, including the likes of Havana Club, Jim Beam, Cadbury and Innocent among more. What do the brands have in common on Pearlfishers roster? They are all trusted and therefor have become leaders in their market. In order to retrieve this trust you have to form a relationship with the customer over a period of time. For example Coca Cola are a company who have managed to gain a huge level of trust that they are in fact the company with the best Cola product in the world. They have done this by major investment into advertisements and celebrity endorsement. Even coming up with the idea of incorporating Santa Claus into their advertising, which stimulates the idea that Coca Cola is a trusted family brand. Having this sort of development into the image of the company will help them in sales opportunities, e.g. if an individual was told to pick up fizzy drinks when at the supermarket, when deciding what product to choose, it’s highly likely that the individual will gravitate towards Coca Cola, due to the trust that they see in the brand; “Millions of people can’t be wrong.” As you can see in the slideshow, Pearlfisher have chosen easy on the eye colours, nothing too bold to give Starbucks a classy natural look on the shelves. Opting to dedicate all your products to these particular colour pallets will over time give Starbucks a recognisable appearance to customers and leads – Due to the development and exposure of the Starbucks logo, Pearlfisher have decided to make the logo on the products stand out bold. Between 2008 and 2016, 374 big retail brands went bust or into administration, affecting 28,339 stores and 2.7 million staff In the US, retail brands that were once seen as national institutions are in trouble. It is a matter of time before Sears is finally laid to rest Macy's and Penney's are fighting for dear life, there is no guarantee that even Wal-Mart will survive the bloodletting. So what’s going on in the retail industry? This is what’s going on The traditional value chain that led from the retail brand to the consumer has been broken The new value chain starts with the consumer and leads to the retail brand. With smartphones and ipad, and laptops and click & collect and all the rest It is the consumer who pulls the string. This change in consumer-retailer relationship caught many retail brands off guard There is good news and bad news. The bad news is, by the time the bloodletting is over, those retail brands that do not adapt will disappear from the retail landscape forever The good news is, those handful of retail brands that change their strategies to adapt to the new retail environment will be successful beyond their wildest imagination. Every retail brand now has a choice: Adapt and benefit from the massive opportunity presented by multichannel retailing or don’t adapt and be swept aside by the tsunami There can never be a better time to be a retailer. Instead, Sarah takes a look at them to see if they are legally compliant (and spoiler - they aren’t!). Here are the mistakes they made: MISTAKE #1: Selling Copyrighted Products The first store that Sarah reviewed (Scoops World Online) was making a HUGE mistake by selling phone cases that featured copyrighted photos, pictures, characters and trademarked logos (and yes - photos can contain copyrights as well!). On Aliexpress, a lot of sellers will sell items that contain copyrighted pictures and characters, and sell items that contain logos that are trademarked. A lot of people make the mistake that surely these manufacturers are only selling them if they have the right to do so? But unfortunately, they almost always don’t. The reason why they do it is because they know that they can get away with it, not because they have the right to do so. It’s very tempting to sell items that feature copyrighted characters/trademarks because they sell extremely well. The reason why they sell extremely well is because companies like Disney have poured enormous amounts of money into making them super popular. That is why they protect their copyrights/trademarks: they want to capitalize on that popularity and keep all of that money for themselves! However, this does lead to another question that we get asked a lot… QUESTION: Can I Sell Items that Contain Chinese Manufacturers Names? YES! Yes you can. There is NOTHING wrong with selling items that contain copyrights or trademarks, as long as you acquired those items LEGALLY. So you can tell a Captain America action figure, as long as you acquired it from a source that either produced it legally, or bought it legally. The problem with Chinese manufacturers is they usually did not produce their Captain America phone cases legally in the first place, which makes the items illegal - and thus, it makes it illegal for you to purchase them and resell them. If the manufacturers had produced them legally, it would be legal for you to sell them. So when a Chinese manufacturer places their brand/logo on an item (e.g. the manufacturer Transhome likes to put the name of their factory - Transhome - on their products) it’s absolutely fine to buy and resell that, as they had the right to make that item in the first place. MISTAKE #2: Not Having a Refund Policy Page The second store that Sarah reviewed (Doggo Trend) did not have a refund policy page anywhere on the website. This is a big problem because it means that if the customer wants to return an item for an illegitimate reason (e.g. they bought the wrong sized shirt) that you can’t point to a refund policy page and say, we don’t accept refunds if you purchase the wrong size, and we made this clear before you bought it. The customer now has an opening to argue with you that they should receive a refund - which increases the chances that they’ll try to do something like file a dispute with PayPal. And yes: you would probably win that dispute. But now your seller metrics have been negatively impacted. Be sure to protect yourself with a refund policy page. MISTAKE #3: Not Including a Shipping Time Disclaimer When dropshipping from Aliexpress, the shipping times can be 10-20 days long with epacket to the USA. This is an abnormally high shipping time. It is not fair to the customer to not warn them that the shipping times are going to be long. The third store that Sarah reviewed, Kokosale, did NOT include a shipping time disclaimer on their product pages. This is very concerning: you should include a note (and we recommend bolding it) saying that shipping will take either 2-3 weeks, or 2-4 weeks to be safe. If you do not warn the customer, they could get very upset and legitimately ask for a refund, file a PayPal dispute or file a chargeback. And the chances are, you will lose that dispute because you were engaging in shady practices. So don’t try to hide the shipping times - set the expectation for the customer. Be upfront and let them know!

Department Stores are facing competition on multiple levels. Amazon is estimated to overtake Macy’s as the largest U.S. retailer of apparel and accessories by 2017, with projected sales approaching $28 billion. Specialty retail brands, led by the “fast-fashion” cohort, have also gained share, now accounting for more than three times the sales of Department Stores in the U.S. Meanwhile Department Store brand partners like Coach and Michael Kors have announced plans to reduce product availability in select department stores. With these key partnerships under threat, Department Stores’ historic stock price gains versus the S&P 500 have evaporated over the last 18 months. While Department Stores continue to invest in omnichannel capabilities on their brand sites, consumer adoption of omnichannel services has been slow to materialize, largely due to a disconnect between the service advertised and the actual consumer experience. Department Store leaders have also been slow to fully leverage their store networks to offer same-day fulfillment, struggling to keep pace with the consumer expectation established by Amazon, where same-day availability significantly exceeds that of Department Stores. Find out on this countdown of epic business blunders! #9. “Kodak”- The Eastman Kodak Company was founded in 1888 and was the most successful company in the photography industry during the 20th Century. They were the leaders in bringing the cutting edge of photographic technology and easy to use cameras to the hands of consumers throughout the world. But Kodak almost met its demise at the hands of a product that it actually invented: digital photography. Kodak invented this technology in 1975, but failed to jump on the innovation, believing that common applications for it were well into the future. Early on, the company thought that the high cost and complexity that would be needed to make a push into the digital front weren’t in Kodak’s best interests. So, Kodak put digital photography to the side to be picked back up when the time was financially advantageous, but they waited too long. By the time they switched gears, they faced competitors who had been perfecting their business models with digital photography at the center, whereas Kodak’s model was still dependent on printed photos. While other companies made deals with websites, phone companies and focused on online based imaging, Kodak floundered and in 2012 filed for Bankruptcy. They have since come back from bankruptcy and started specializing in producing smartphones and tablets. #8. “Pan American”- From 1927 until 1991, Pan Am was the largest airline company in the United States, but due to bad foresight, callous labor practices and an uncontrollable disaster this global giant quickly met its end. The company basically had a monopoly on overseas travel until World War II but was dealt its first major blow when other strong airline companies began to up their game. Pan Am fought off the competitors with its innovations such as jumbo jets and an advanced system for making reservations but these innovations couldn’t match the corporate aptitude and human relations that the other airlines dealt with more astutely. One of the main reasons for Pan Am’s failure was ironically due to its early successes. Because of the sheer size of its fleet, it was the company hit the hardest by the 1973 oil crisis. Just before the crisis, Pan Am had just purchased a number of brand new gas-guzzling Boeing 747s and was forced to dramatically raise ticket prices to recuperate. As it was trying to recover from this setback it had also become a target of terrorism in the Middle East. To the terrorists Pan Am was a symbol of the United States overseas because it was the largest U.S. airline servicing the area. During the Gulf War, in the midst of financial hardships and battles with labor unions, Pan American 103 on a transatlantic flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Detroit was blown up by Libyan nationals above the Scottish town of Lockerbie. The incident scared even more customers away from flying Pan Am and many travel agents would no longer book flights on their planes. All of these events and poor managing of them led Pan American International Airways to declare bankruptcy and completely fold in 1991. #7. “Borders”- Tom and Louis Borders opened their first bookstore in 1971. Their vast selection of books and innovative inventory system turned them into the second biggest chain of book megastores. Due to years of miscalculating the future of book consumption, the bookstore all but vanished in 2011. It all started in the mid 90s when Amazon and other online stores hit the scene. Instead of developing their own website and focusing on online sales, the company decided to further their storefront endeavors and expanded into Europe and Asia opening hundreds of stores. Their competitor Barnes and Noble, did the opposite by preparing for the digital age, perfecting their online sales system and focusing on their storefront operations in the United States. When Borders did start to catch on to the online market they were already far behind and decided to use Amazon as a host for such sales. Because of this, as more and more sales were made online, instead of receiving 100% of the profit they had to share with Amazon. Borders also was caught in the past by devoting lots of money and inventory towards DVDs and CDs at a time when digital music and video was on the rise. While Barnes and Noble developed it’s own e-reader to grab paperless book market by the horns, Borders was extremely slow to adapt to the change. All of these factors came to a boiling point in 2006 when, after several years of losing millions of dollars Borders filed for bankruptcy. By 2011, Borders realized there was no way out and closed most of its remaining stores. The only stores remaining are in southeast asia where it remain Borders in name only, as they were sold to a company named Popular Holdings.
