2017 Mercedes Benz CLA 250 4Matic Review
you’re looking for value, you’d have found yourself in the Chevy dealership, looking to pack on high-tech goodies like adaptive cruise control and fuel-efficient powertrains like a 1.6 diesel engine. But mainstream vehicles like the Cruze lack the outward premium appeal of something with a Mercedes badge; and in today’s world of social media posting with fancy photo filters, don’t drivers just want everyone else to know that they’re successful enough to own a Mercedes? Well, successful owners or not, the Mercedes CLA appeals to buyers with its style and performance, not to mention the fact that it’s the most affordable Benz in the brand’s lineup. Just $33,625 USD ($35,700 CAD) will get you a car with a three-pointed star, and although it is front-wheel drive, there’s also an all-wheel drive model that’s $2,000 more ($2,200 more in Canada) and a high-performance AMG model that’s a whopping $15,700 (or just $14,400 in Canada) more than that. The CLA is filling that niche of being an affordable option from an established premium nameplate. Cars like the Audi A3 and BMW 2 Series are true competitors to the CLA, and all make a few sacrifices to suit the brand personality while meeting a lower price tag. But back to the CLA. All models use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which in the non-AMG versions produces 208 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It’s managed by a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that is a difficult unit to truly love. At low speeds it is jerky and hesitant, with noticeable shifts that are really uncomfortable. The engine start/stop is also a bit rough, so between the engine turning off at stop signs and lights and the transmission, starts take longer than expected and feel unrefined. Basically, driving the car in traffic isn’t enjoyable at all. However, at higher speeds the transmission swaps gears very quickly and gives the CLA a sporty feel. Sitting in-between the realms of the large luxurious super saloon that is the S-Class and the compact four-door sedan that is the C-Class, the E-Class has always been somewhat of a sweet spot for the brand. Now, Mercedes-Benz offers a proper bruiser with a softer side, meet the Mercedes-AMG E43 4Matic. Performance is not always defined by sheer brutal power and aggression, it is sometimes a more delicate blend that defines the perfect balance. If you want an E-Class which doubles as a lighting jet fighter, you can get the Mercedes-AMG E63s with its simply staggering 450 kW and 850 Nm of torque and 0-100 km/h in 3.4-seconds or faster than many supercars on the planet. But what happens if you want a luxury saloon car which car be calm, quiet and easy to live with every day and bonkers when the mood takes you? This is where the AMG E43 strikes a great balance. With its high-performance 3.0-litre turbopetrol V6 motor, the E43 produces a very healthy 295 kW at 6100 rpm and 520 Nm of torque resulting in 0-100 km/h being achieved in just 4.6 secs. All the power is mated to a 9-speed automated transmission with of-course the inclusion of nice easy to grab paddles behind the steering-wheel for rapid and self-controlled shifting. Modern saloon cars within this segment are getting closer and closer to their bigger siblings than ever before. The BMW 5-Series, for instance, shares much of its clever tech and feel with that of the technologically advanced and larger 7-Series. The same can be said for the new E-Class. This latest generation E-Class feels just a slight shade away from the ultimate technological trailblazer that is the S-Class. Crammed with every imaginable technological advancement, luxury and comfort feature, there is nothing that the E-Class won’t do. In fact, you will struggle to explain to anyone that they are not sitting in an S-Class, not exactly a bad thing,m especially when you consider that the E-Class is even more affordable. Slashes of red and black with suede inserts and red seat belts let you know that you are in an AMG tuned model, while large, wide and incredibly comfortable seats let you know that you are in a vehicle which has “sleeper” status. The E43 really is a perfect blend of luxury and comfort. The experience is further enhanced by its technological wash, which includes technologies such as Drive Pilot semi-autonomous driving, which enables the E-Class to brake, accelerate and even steer with just some occasional driver input. The wealth of technological advancements coupled with the likes of massaging seats, Burmester Audio and 64-shades of mood lighting all help make for a very relaxing drive, while a lot of horsepower under your right-foot helps get the blood pumping.
