He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the famed headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to both Tom Arnold, literary professor, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator. Matthew Arnold has been characterized as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Arnold "Dover Beach" is a short lyric poem by the English poet Matthew Arnold. It was first published in 1867 in the collection New Poems, but surviving notes indicate its composition may have begun as early as 1849. The most likely date is 1851. The title, locale and subject of the poem's descriptive opening lines is the shore of the English ferry port of Dover, Kent, facing Calais, France, at the Strait of Dover, the narrowest part (21 miles) of the English Channel, where Arnold honeymooned in 1851.[2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dover_Beach video created and copyright to Robert Nichol 2013

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

Sea Fever - A poem by John Masefield. I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over. About The Poem - Salt-Water Poems and Ballads includes "Sea-Fever" and "Cargoes", two of Masefield's best known poems. "Sea-Fever" first appeared in Salt-Water Ballads -- Masefield's first volume of poetry published in 1902 in London by Grant Richards. In The Collected Poems of John Masefield the opening line was changed to the text now more commonly anthologised: "I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky". The first lines of the second and third stanzas retained the form "I must down to the seas again. "Sea-Fever" has been set to music by many composers, the most famous version is by John Ireland. About The Poet - John Edward Masefield (1878 -- 1967) was an English poet and writer, and Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until his death in 1967. He was born in Herefordshire, England. Many of Masefield's short poems were set as art songs by British composers of the time. Black as the cloud of some tremendous spell, The susurration of the sighing sea Sounds like the sobbing whisper of two souls That tremble in a passion of farewell. To the desires that trebled life in me, (O melancholy of the wind that rolls!) The dreams that seemed the future to foretell, The hopes that mounted herward like the sea, To all the sweet things sent on happy souls, I cannot choose but bid a mute farewell. And to the girl who was so much to me (O lamentation of this wind that rolls!) Since I may not the life of her compel, Out of the night, beside the sounding sea, Full of the love that might have blent our souls, A sad, a last, a long, supreme farewell. (More of The Wee Little Cat!) I I created this video for my Marine Science (Oceanography) class. (CLICK SHOW MORE) (Full Transcript) Hello! My name's The Wee little Cat and this poem is by Dmitry Pepper. Poem of the Sea. Echinodermata they are found in the sea they have many shapes, but each has five ray symmetry. Ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm, make the diverse creatures in a myriad of shapes. They have a true coelom, but unfortunately no head. They have a gut and anus, enough said. Neither a circulatory system nor an excretory system are there and skin gills help them get their air. The endoskeleton may look as if it is on the outside, but it’s endo or subdermal, what a surprise! A water vascular system with its canals, operates their tube feets for our spiny skin pals. Their tiny pincers or pedicellariae, as they say, help keep all other marine animals at bay. sexual and asexual reproduction occur, but some go beyond, oh wow, sea stars can regenerate a lost arm Sea lilies, and biscuits, and urchins, and stars, and cucumbers and sand dollars, too all make up this big phylum for you.

I was raised in California so the beach is a huge part of my life. The Beach brings me happiness to my life, it's not just a place to go but it's home. Now that I live in the desert I've been missing the beach a little bit more than usual. The past week I went to Mexico and stayed at a beach house for a little more than a week and it was beautiful. I was able to wake up in the mornings, have breakfast outside watching the waves crash and go swimming, body boarding, tanning, build sand castles, collect seashells and much more. I was so happy that I was inspired to write a poem about the beach. I'm not very good with poems but I did my best and had a little help from my best friend Zoe. I hope you guys enjoy this video, I had fun filming it and writing this short poem for it as well. The Beach By: Itzayana Chapa A place to visit and explore Where thoughts run through my mind galore A place to catch the summer breeze and watch the waves come and go For many people its just a vacation But for me it's home People complain about the hot sun, the sand between their toes and the cold water But all that to me is just a way of living Subscribe to my channel and give this video a thumbs up social media: insta: https://instagram.com/itzayana_chapa twitter: https://twitter.com/itzyhere vsco: vsco.co/itzyhere phhhoto; itzyhere thanks for watching love you all

Voices of Sea, 2009 Created in Hamburg with the cooperation of young people with no particular initial skills except those of the cameraman assistant, the cut and the technicians, “Voices of the Sea” is a poetic surrealistic short film, mainly written in German language. It represents a turning point in the life of a “marine” anthropo- archaeologist who has devoted more than 25 years to understand the deep specificity of the sea based culture in their social symbolical and imaginary dimensions, especially in the Mediterranean. With this film the author, director, comes back to very first theatre and filmic experiences in the mid seventies with his friend the poet video maker Patrick Morelli (disappeared “in the moon and the stars” in 2007), and 20 years later with the Sicilian young filmmaker Gianfranco Serraino “Forti I paleddi”. “Voices of the Sea” doesn’t tell a story. There is no plot, no action, and no character as such, but five wonderful voices of young women and that one of man which express poetically the modern alteration – vulnerabilization of the res halieutica, of the blue causality. By the means of the rhetorical figure of the personification the marine nature Id it is always the sea who speaks to humans in the tableaux. Each of them from the creation of the marine world the Kumulipo, borrowed to the old Hawaiian sea based culture to the Sophoclean appeal of the sea to the sensitive reason of the western humanity it is always the sea which claims, shouts, bubbles through voices, music composition, strong surrealistic images and creatures - objects inspired by Magritte, Labisse, Ernst. “Voices of the Sea” by the means of the work of the metaphorization, the analogies and metonymies re-tailors the recent findings of marine ecology, anthropology, history and archaeology of the Bronze Mediterranean and Phoenician world. This epic of the “marinity” expresses the symptoms of its disruption of a suffered denaturising of the marine nature Id. Nevertheless, it is not a crude accusatory, but a strong symbolic narrative which awakes the sensuous percept of marine affordances looking for to give form to the halieuphylia: the human feelings attached to the marine world. Through the gracious “Minoan” choreography, poetic Homerical words, abstract music the spectator changes into the sound and moves of the waves or those of the mingling sperm whales. As in the Kumolipo he enters like the god in the female blue causality. In the canto III he is called to enter in resonance with the sacred and ethical dimension of the sea e.g. the human gifts to the gods of the broad waters, as he would have perhaps done 5000 years ago, and today in the Samoa Islands.

I've always been there, always will be Going on in steady motion. Sometimes i am hard to tame, Hard to sail on when i roar, Hard to be around my shore, Day by day it is the same. Oh yes, i am the big blue ocean, Slightly dirty, slowly dying, Deep inside you'll find me crying, Still i'm honest, never lying, I'll keep going, i'll keep trying To go on in steady motion. Often my sound fills your ear, Often my waves cross your eye. No, there will be no goodbye. I will not go, i will stay here. After all, i'm still the ocean, Home to many from land and sea I've always been where i will be Going on in steady motion.

I started early, took my dog, And visited the sea; The mermaids in the basement Came out to look at me. And frigates in the upper floor Extended hempen hands, Presuming me to be a mouse Aground, upon the sands. But no man moved me till the tide Went past my simple shoe, And past my apron and my belt, And past my bodice too, And made as he would eat me up As wholly as a dew Upon a dandelion's sleeve - And then I started too. And he - he followed close behind; I felt his silver heel Upon my ankle, - then my shoes Would overflow with pearl. Until we met the solid town, No man he seemed to know; And bowing with a mighty look At me, the sea withdrew.
