Running my fastest mile - Project 5

11:51
I'm back! Another running video! This one is by far the biggest/hardest project I've worked on to date. Kieran and I were interested to see how fast I, a casual Sunday morning runner, could run a mile. We then thought it would be a cool idea to see if we he could coach me to run a sub 5 minute mile. I set myself the target to do it inside 10 weeks, and even though I didn't get to train as much as I wanted, it was still an awesome, fun and challenging project. The final mile was done with Kieran as a pacemaker in the horrible weather because it was genuinely the only day we were all available to do it. The rain wasn't just for dramatic effect! Some calculations for you: 5 minute mile = 3:07 kilometre 4:57 mile = 3:05 kilometre 5 minute mile = 2:11:11 Marathon 5 minute mile = 12mph or 19.30kph HUGE shoutout to Kieran Clements for making this all possible, check his stuff out here: https://www.instagram.com/kieran_clements/ https://twitter.com/KieranClements https://www.strava.com/athletes/19926647 The special thanks in this video go out to those named for help with travel, filming, logistics and simply being great humans. Ketosis, Fat Burning & Endurance Exercise

RESEARCH http://www.metabolismjournal.com/arti... https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti... https://nutritionandmetabolism.biomed... https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases... Endurance exercise athletes physiology was believed to be fed primarily glucose. In other words, when an athlete depleted their stored sugar, glycogen they will become fatigued and hit a wall (bonked). This has led many athletes to consume carbs before, during and after. However, new research has demonstrated using fat as a primary fuel source and use ketosis as a way to do it. This must involve becoming ketoadapted. This is what has been missing - getting an athlete to adapt fully to ketosis. It was then found that elite endurance athletes burned more than 2x the fat then carb fed athletes. Sebastien Sasseville - Inspirational Endurance Athlete

02:49
Sebastien Sasseville inspires organizations to create empowered cultures of excellence. An endurance athlete, Sasseville’s extraordinary accomplishments--which include summiting Mount Everest, completing the mythical Sahara race, and running across Canada--are made all the more impressive by the fact that he lives with Type 1 Diabetes. Turning his incredible experiences into concrete lessons that easily apply to the business world, Sasseville’s talks show how far we can go when we do a little bit every day, and that nothing should stand in the way on the path toward success. Infusing his presentations with the energy, humor, and emotions he deployed while undertaking all his challenges, Sasseville, who is fully bilingual, also addresses transformation and change, goal setting, crisis management, peak performance, and teamwork. To date, he has spoken to over 200 audiences across North America, for clients including CIBC, JDRF, EMC, and Animas. In 2008, Sasseville reached the summit of Mount Everest. In the following years, he went on to complete six Ironman races and the Sahara 250 kilometre self-supported ultra-marathon. In 2014, he took on the biggest challenge of his life: a solo, 7200 km run across Canada, the equivalent of 170 marathons in nine months. Frequently recognized as an inspiration, the French-Canadian athlete was at the forefront on the Johnson & Johnson 2008 Beijing Olympics Inspiration TV commercial, and in 2012 he became the face of the Human Face of Big Data campaign, deployed globally by EMC Corporation, a Fortune 200 company. In 2014, he entered in a partnership with Biotherm Homme as part of their Living Exceptionally campaign. Sasseville holds a bachelor’s degree in communications. http://www.speakers.ca/speakers/sebastien-sasseville/ ‎ This video is brought to you by Speaker's Spotlight - http://www.speakers.ca - Canada's leading speakers' bureau. STRANGEST Outfits Worn for Marathons

07:41
14. State of the art Gemma Kirkham ran the London Marathon in 2015 and tried to beat the record for the fastest person dressed as a painting. 13. Whatever suits you? No, this guy is not running late but he is running an apparel company. (Gihan Amarasiriwardena) introduced his suit called the Aviator II and decided to test it out by running a half marathon. This is a smart guy who will give you a run for your money. 12. Gorilla marketing London police officer Tom Harrison completed the London Marathon in six days. Harrison who is passionate about conserving gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda has raised over 20 thousand pounds. He raced for about 10-12 hours per day and slept at friends’ houses. He literally completed the race on all fours and was known as the guy who crawled the London Marathon. 11. The whole package No doubt this guy got lots of oohs and aahs from spectators whilst running the London Marathon in 2012. Let’s hope he did not suffer any ‘jock itch’ after the race. Perhaps next he should consider a “Shavathon”? 10. Just don’t get your panties in a twist Who else but students will have the balls to take part in an underwear run? I cannot say for certain but I am sure there must be a beer tent somewhere around, perhaps this is what they are running towards? Several Universities take part in similar races and in this particular one, you take your clothes off at the starting line, which then gets donated to charity. Cheers! 9. If you’re going to go to San Francisco This century old race started as a serious footrace in San Francisco but today it has evolved into a race known for its costumes and nude runners drawing crowds of thousands lining the streets. The first runner in a costume ran the race in 1941 dressed as Captain Kidd, although he came last in the race he started a massive trend and the rest as they say is history. 8. May the force be with you? Dressing up at the London Marathon has become such a big thing that in 2017 they had 86 runners attempting to break 73 Guinness World Record attempts. They have partnered with the marathon by offering on-the-spot world record verifications the moment you cross the finish line. The 42-year old Royal Air Force officer Jeremy Anlinson was hoping to do just that. Even though he was running for ‘The Empire’ he offered to give proceeds to the ‘Make a Wish Foundation’. The force is strong in Anlinson as this was only a warm up marathon for him. Anlinson would run another race on May the 4th. Yes, Star Wars day. 7. Airing your lungs From London to Beijing in 2014. The Chinese Capitol is known for its smog, often reaching hazardous levels. If you think it was difficult running in a Rhino suit, athletes who completed the annual Beijing marathon said wearing a facemask to protect them from pollution was the most difficult thing to do- as it was impossible to run and not breathe through your mouth. According to officials, several runners pulled out of the race while others pushed through. The public was warned in advance that Beijing’s air was not suitable for outdoor activities and some brave runners admitted that their lungs were burning during and after the race. 6. Big in Japan Form China we move to Tokyo in Japan. The Annual Tokyo marathon would be the equivalent of the London Marathon as it is also known for runners wearing eccentric outfits, although nothing compared to London. This man, who ran the marathon in 2016 was dressed as a Japanese Budda or perhaps Empire of the Sun? 5. Runaway Bride Every year 30 to 50 women take part in the annual wedding gown race in the Serbian City of Belgrade. With several prizes up for grabs, including a wedding dress and dream wedding, we all know the number one prize will be an eligible hunk waiting at the finish line, with a million dollars. 4. Going bananas The Tokyo Marathon in 2007 got all a bit fruity. Due to the fact that Winnie the Pooh is on a strict honey diet, the fruits were in good company to safely make it to the finish line. 3. The heavyweight champion In September 2008, Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair surprised about 52 000 runners when he officially started a charity race in Newcastle, by blowing the horn for the ‘Great North Run’. This guy, who is either called Jamie, running for someone called Jamie, or ate perhaps ate Jamie took the term ‘sweat suit’ to a whole new level. 2. Passing the waterhole It is not 100% sure in which year this man was running the London Marathon, although Flora was its main sponsor from 1996 until 2009. This guy made sure that there would be no awkward toilet breaks and probably hoped to finish the race at number 1 and preferably not number 2.

Athletes and Mental Health: The Hidden Opponent | Victoria Garrick | TEDxUSC

21:14
The issue of mental health in college students, specifically college student-athletes, is stigmatized and neglected. According to a 2011 study by the National College Athletic Association, 30% of about 200,000 student-athletes reported feeling depressed. 50% also claimed to have experienced overwhelming anxiety, and this information is six years out of date. Student-athletes are typically praised as celebrities on campus, considered strong and brave. When we walk by and people cheer, “Great win last night,” they can’t see that we are struggling with issues incurable by their praise and affirmation. We minimize the effects of our depression, anxiety, or eating disorder, because society does not encourage us to come forward. Student-athletes endure five hours of team commitment daily, 18 hours of class weekly, and the pressure to physically perform no matter what the circumstance. You can’t see mental health issues like you can see an ankle sprain. From Atherton, California, Victoria Garrick is a rising Junior libero for the USC Women’s Indoor Volleyball team. Both freshman and sophomore year, Victoria started and played in every match for the Women of Troy, who won the Pac-12 Championship in 2015. During a difficult freshman year, learning how to be a Division I athlete as well a Dean’s List student, she dealt with situational depression, anxiety, and a binge-eating disorder. By seeing a sports psychologist at USC every week, Victoria was able to learn how to manage her mental health issues, as well as regain normal eating habits. However, she is very concerned about other athletes like her who do not have the confidence to seek help, or learn how to manage their chaotic lives. One of Victoria’s missions in her final two years of college is to help others by sharing her experience. 2018 RACE SCHEDULE

09:50
After a blistering hot 5 mile run, I go over the races that I'm signed up for for the rest of 2018. First up is the 5k at the Chicago Rock n Roll Half Marathon where I'll be shooting for a sub 20 5k on July 21. Next will be the Chicago Half Marathon on September 23. I'm hoping for a PR there, but that event is always so hot. And finally, I'm signed up for the Indianapolis Marathon on November 3. I'm hoping for a 3:30 finish in what I think will be a pretty fast field. Thanks for watching. Hey baby, You Wanna Date??

02:18
Date season has arrived! I get my Dates, when available, through 7hotdates.com. All organic with lots of variety to choose from. I ordered 30lbs of Medjool and 6lbs of wet pack Khadrawy. Dates are great for the high carb, low fat plant-based lifestyle. High in carbs with virtually no fat and full of B vitamins and minerals. If you've tried Dates and make them a staple on the 80/10/10 lifestyle you must give these a try. I have no affiliation, just enjoy their Dates. Some store bought Dates can be old and dried out, not these. They are super sweet, soft, and sugary. I'll eat the Medjool as a mono-meal, and eat the super gooey Khadrawy as a snack or with my Medjools. Free shipping too, http://7hotdates.com The High Carb, Low Fat Plant-Based lifestyle, 80/10/10, does wonders for weight loss, fitness, and cardiovascular endurance for not just endurance athletes but also MMA fighters, Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu players, busy Moms, and any sport that requires explosive health and fitness. More importantly the 80/10/10 lifestyle helps prevent against Heart Disease, Diabetes, and other diseases like Cancer. So this is a lifestyle for anyone wanting to look and feel better. Sport psychology - inside the mind of champion athletes: Martin Hagger at TEDxPerth

12:02
Martin Hagger is Professor of Psychology at Curtin University. His areas of expertise are social, health, sport and exercise psychology. He is involved in numerous research projects nationally and internationally with a focus on motivation and behaviour change. He is currently leading projects in drugs in sport, promoting physical activity and healthy diet, understanding the mechanisms of willpower and self-control, and reducing binge drinking and the prevalence of smoking. At the highest level, athletes are well-matched in terms of their physical abilities, conditioning, and skill level. But often that is not enough to win and perform on the biggest of stages like the Olympic games. Developing strategies and techniques to get athletes minds in the best possible condition for optimal performance is increasingly important for sports teams and coaches. Martin will provide an overview of the kinds of techniques that elite athletes use to prepare psychologically for their sport, give details of the scientific research into these techniques and how they work, and how the techniques might be used by competitive athetes and coaches to maximise performance. ------------------ TEDxPerth 2012 took place on Saturday 8 December 2012 at the Octagon Theatre at the University of Western Australia. Over 500 people attended in person and listeners all over the country enjoyed the day by tuning in to the live broadcast on digital radio. 101-Year-Old Marathon Runner to Retire After Final Race

01:02
A 101-year-old marathon runner gets ready to retire. In 2011, a 100-year-old man, Fauja Singh was declared the world's oldest runner to complete a marathon. Singh, a British citizen, is known as the "Turbaned Tornado" for his consistent marathon runs. Now, he has decided that February 24th, 2013 will be the date of his final race. Following the Hong Kong Marathon, Singh will officially retire from competitive running. Although his status as a competitor will soon be over, Singh states "Running is my life. I will keep running to inspire the masses. I will keep running for at least four hours daily after that." The elderly man will be leaving behind quite a legacy for athletes old and young. In 2012, Singh was granted the privilege of carrying the Olympic torch on July 21st. He covered the London Borough of Newham while surrounded by hundreds of supporters. Shockingly, he hasn't been running for as long as you might think. He took it up while in his late 80s.

Grip Endurance Training| OCR Preparation | Vermont Spartan Beast 2018

08:07
Discussing the importance of grip endurance over grip strength when training for an obstacle course race, we delve into the multiple tools you can use to prepare. When most people think about their grip, they think of having massive strong forearms and being able to dead lift a heavy weight. Truth is the majority of your grip comes from your fingers and not your forearms. Prime example is rock climbers who aren’t known for their overly massive forearms but have fingers that are as tough as steel. When it comes to obstacle course races, grip strength take a back seat to endurance. Having a strong grip on the first obstacle is great but you need the endurance to have your grip last you the entire course. In the case of the beast that is 25 obstacles. That’s why I focus on grip endurance, knowing it is more valuable on the course and that the strength aspect will take care of itself throughout my training. How do you build that grip Strength and Endurance? Let me know in the comments below. How Much Rest & Recovery Do We Really Need With Exercise?

03:48
Take Dr. Berg's Advanced Evaluation Quiz: http://bit.ly/EvalQuiz Your report will then be sent via email analyzing 104 potential symptoms, giving you a much deeper insight into your body issues. It's free and very enlightening. Dr. Berg explains how much rest and recovery do we really need with exercise. You are constantly balancing between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Recovery is actually a push down wave like factor, in which your body is actively recovering a stress (ex. higher pulse rate). If you keep your pulse rate high during the entire workout exercise, you're limiting your potential gains. By adding more recovery between the sets of exercise and the frequency through the workout, you can optimize your performance, your strength and your endurance, not to mention your actual weight loss. I do recommend HIIT, whereby you apply high intensity interval training.
