The Science of Flirting: Being a H.O.T. A.P.E. | Jean Smith | TEDxLSHTM

11:38
Is this person flirting with me? This question has plagued us from nearly the beginning of time. Social anthropologist Jean Smith, or ‘flirtologist’ if you will, demonstrates her 6 simple steps known as “H.O.T. A.P.E.” to help answer that very question. And it will forever change your perception of flirting from being a stranger’s evaluation of your worth into what it should be: a fun game! Jean's purpose in life is understanding how people flirt. And people flirt differently in different cultures. She uses her background as a cultural and social anthropologist to help teach people how to flirt – to gain confidence and happiness in their lives by assisting them to projective a positive image of themselves. , she uses research and studies to emphasize the skills that we can all learn to interact more effectively. Jean also uses practical activities and interaction to bridge the brain and the body and apply the information to make our daily lives more rewarding. The basis of Jeans teachings comes from her background as a social anthropologist.. A few years ago, Jean published, The Flirt Interpreter, which is an accessible analysis of the research she conducted into the flirting behaviour of people in the cities of London, New York, Paris and Stockholm. She conducted 250 face-to-face interviews to ascertain flirting behaviour. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. The unsexy truth, the hookup culture | Lisa Bunnage | TEDxSFU

16:24
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Did you know today's youth view sex as no more meaningful than a handshake? Did you know what they will often perform oral sex on a stranger they just met at a party but not kiss them as that's too personal? That's tame compared to a lot of what Lisa has heard in her 40+ years of experience of working with and raising kids. Parenting should be Fun & Easy. Get all the hard work done when they're little then relax & enjoy. Yes, there's some tweaking during the teen years, but otherwise ... easy. My methods are based on 40+ years of experience of working with & raising kids. I use what works, not what people think “should” work. If the respect isn't mutual, it's useless. Be the Fun Parent, not the Friend. What's the difference? Parents discipline, Friends don't. I help parents find their Inner Leader so their children turn to them instead of their peers for guidance. 'Deep work' will make you better at what you do. You will achieve more in less time. And feel the sense of true fulfillment that comes from the mastery of a skill. Cal Newport is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. In addition to studying the theoretical foundations of our digital age, Newport also writes about the impact of these technologies on the world of work. His most recent book, Deep Work, argues that focus is the new I.Q. in the modern workplace and that the ability to concentrate without distraction is becoming increasingly valuable. He previously wrote So Good They Can’t Ignore You, a book which debunks the long-held belief that “follow your passion” is good advice, and three popular books of unconventional advice for students. How to deal with gaslighting | Ariel Leve

12:01
Gaslighting is an emotionally abusive tactic that makes the victim question their own sanity and perception of reality. In this important talk, Ariel Leve shares some of the life-saving strategies she adopted as a child to survive her mother’s gaslighting. TEDArchive presents previously unpublished talks from TED conferences. Enjoy this unedited talk by Ariel Leve. Filmed at TEDNYC Rebirth 2017. NOTE: Comments are disabled on this video. We made this difficult decision for the TED Archive because we believe that a well-moderated conversation allows for better commentary from more people and more viewpoints. Studies show that aggressive and hateful comments silence other commenters and drive them away; unfortunately, YouTube's comment moderation tools are simply not up to the task of allowing us to monitor comments on so many videos at once. (We'd love to see this change, YouTube.) So for now, if you'd like to comment on this talk, please use Facebook, Twitter or G+ to discuss with your networks.

We need to talk about an injustice | Bryan Stevenson

http://www.ted.com In an engaging and personal talk -- with cameo appearances from his grandmother and Rosa Parks -- human rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson shares some hard truths about America's justice system, starting with a massive imbalance along racial lines: a third of the country's black male population has been incarcerated at some point in their lives. These issues, which are wrapped up in America's unexamined history, are rarely talked about with this level of candor, insight and persuasiveness.
