Who is a Product Manager and What do they do? [Career Insights]

07:54
The role of a product manager is crucial but also one of the least understood ones. What does a product manager really do? Is he more of a data analyst? Or someone who deals with the tech aspects of product, leading the team of engineers? Or does the product manager largely concern himself/herself with user experience, design or the overall business strategy? Mind-boggling isn't it? No wonder the role is difficult to understand for most. In this video, Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in detail the various responsibilities a Product Manager has, and that you need to execute to the best of your ability to be a good PM. If you want to bag one among the thousands of highly coveted openings for Product Managers between now and 2020 (only to grow exponentially even after), you need to start upgrading your existing skills and mastering these key skills. Product Managers are often referred to as mini-CEOs of the product. This is why, at tech companies, startups and large MNCs that are now diversifying, alike, the role of Product Managers is lucrative and one of the most important in the organization. Product Manager - 10 Essential Skills to Master (In 2018)

06:51
Product Management is a fast-growing and niche area to develop a career in. Naturally, there are some essential skills that can get you to be the very best of the lot. While the need for Product Managers is increasing by the day - in startups, tech companies and other large companies alike - the supply in India is currently only limited to a few thousands and compares poorly to countries such as the US. As per the Google and Accel Partners SAAS Report, there are roughly 36,000 Product Managers in India and the number is expected to increase to about 68,000 Product Managers by 2020. So, the need is apparent. But what does one have to do to get there? How to become a Product Manager? A common misconception is that Product Managers need to only master certain hard skills such as business understanding, tech and data. However, this would only mean the job is half done. To be a successful Product Manager you must have some soft skills too. These include communication, negotiation and leading without authority among many others. But don't worry about backgrounds, as Product Managers have been known to have diverse work and educational experience prior to making the transition into Product Management. Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in this 3rd part of the Careers-In-Shorts Series what these key skills are and how one can ace them to get on the road to being a great Product Manager. In this interview, Mark goes beyond the product manager job description and goes into detail about what his day to day was like. Mark also answers the question about how technical you need to be to be a product manager and how being too technical can actually hamper progress. Because Mark started his own company and also worked for himself as a freelancer, I wanted to know how transferable are the skills between product management and being an entrepreneur. Mark emphasizes that the skills and interests are highly transferable because product managers, designers and entrepreneurs are all alike in that they all care a little bit extra in the user experience. Skills that Mark learned on the job as a product manager that he finds highly useful when starting your own products include time management and establishing a roadmap. Mark also taps into the difficult parts of product management including dealing with ambiguity and working on projects that span months. Product Manager vs. Product Owner Roles

02:06
This is a snippet from 280 Group's Agile Certified Product Manager and Product Owner - Online Course and Exam Learn More About The Online Course: http://280.gr/2zrnRC5 To be totally clear, this is a discussion about roles and NOT titles. For example, your TITLE can be Product Manager while performing the ROLE of a Product Owner. Product Management is a big discipline that covers a vast range of activities and responsibilities. This means being the market expert. You own the product strategy which drives the vision and roadmap. You manage the product throughout its lifecycle. And you ensure that there is a business justification for your decisions. You present the need. Your focus is the problem space and you avoid defining the product. You make the tough decisions and tradeoffs between features, schedule and cost. Ultimately, you deliver differentiated products to market. In some companies, the role is so big, that different aspects of it are split between different people. On the flip side, this is how product ownership is defined. You maximize the value of the product and the work of the development team. And you are the sole person responsible for managing the product backlog. You need to make sure the backlog is visible and understood by the entire development team. And all of these tasks for a particular project or slice of a project are the responsibility of one person. When you map the roles side-by-side, you can see that the product owner is responsible for the detailed work. You can see how closely they work with the development team. There are a lot of tasks that overlap with product management responsibilities. To allocate these, you may need to adjust for individual strengths and weaknesses. Some tasks are outside the scope of what Agile defines as that of the Product Owner. Many organizations struggle with dividing their responsibilities and if someone has all of these assigned to them, the workload becomes overwhelming. As a result, the focus is on the urgent and strategic focus is greatly diminished or lost.

Brainstorm effectively - Everyone pitches ideas to drive biggest impact (No ideas are bad!) - Q&A where people pitch or describe ideas - Everyone votes for their top 3 - Discussion of why and how people voted - Re-vote - You now have top-3 roadmap plan. More or less. 15. Manage product operations - Share company news relevant for team - Gut check for features getting launched ASAP - Learnings and analysis of recent features - Roadmap check-in on new development - 1-2 key topics for brainstorm/discussion or guest speaker 16. Ah, the Life of a Glorified Note Taker Some people think the job of product manager is glorious. Photo: OwlPacino/Flickr 17. In reality the most important thing you do is document decisions. Follow-up notes usually take longer than actual meetings. Involve people from extended team to get feedback, share plans. Photo: OwlPacino/Flickr 18. ACT SOLID Support Ops Legal International Design Analytics Communications Trust/Safety 19. The Company Focus Is Your Focus Understand and communicate the company’s overall goals and objectives. 20. Remind the team of the founders’ vision. Attach incentives to company goals. Bonus Hiring Tip: When interviewing product managers, look for how often candidates refer to the bigger vision of the company. 23. Great product managers understand the very tricky balance between getting it right and getting it out the door. 24. Help Your Team THE RIGHT PRODUCT Ship Photo: Alan/Flickr 25. Start with your team’s most creative solutions. Improve your ideas with: - Feedback from testers and active users - Criticism from non-users - Input from founders and leaders - Ideas from anywhere you can get them BELIEVE BUT LISTEN 27. To users Help Your Team THE RIGHT PRODUCT Ship Photo: Josue Goge/Flickr 28. Advocate for the User A Core Use Case tells the story of who should use the product and why - Articulating the core use case is the hardest part of building a new product 30. The “Do’s” for Product Managers - Coordinate key decisions based on team members’ input - Negotiate disagreements and maintain progress - Develop consensus from team factions, (disagree but commit) 31. The “Don’ts” for Product Managers - Don’t try to build what you think is right - Don’t expect that the team will execute orders blindly - Don’t forget where credit is always due 32. As a product goes to market, you should be game-planning the next iteration: - Plan for improvement (with entire team) - Additional testing - Brainstorming solutions based on data and feedback Your Job Is Never Done 33. There is no right product... but there is a right way to be a Product Manager. Effective Product Managers simply help their team move forward. The Product Is Never Finished 34. No product will ever quite be right for everyone; it’s an ongoing process of continued development and iteration to make it better. Make sure to subscribe to my channel if you liked the video! Product Management with Lean, Agile and System Design Thinking | BUx on edX

02:45
Learn how to plan, develop and deliver on all aspects of work in the lifecycle of digital products using lean, agile and systems design thinking. Take this course for free on edx.org: https://www.edx.org/course/product-management-lean-agile-system-bux-qd503x-0 Want to be the “CEO” of the digital product, but unsure which types of skillsets you may need? This course is for you. Product management drives the implementation of business models in startups and digital enterprises. Learn about the key decisions, underlying tradeoffs, and implementation decisions needed for each phase of the product life and master business and organizational logic to ensure product success in the marketplace. In this course, part of the Digital Product Management MicroMasters program, you will be introduced to frameworks for decision-making based on both economic and organizational considerations. These frameworks inform a rising product manager on how to: (i) understand customer co-creation, needs and become “a champion” for user centric development in the digital technologies. (ii) set up and manage specific work flows (e.g. either lean, agile or stage gate development tasks) that result in timely launch and upgrades of products. (iii) take a data and metrics driven approach to make product life cycle decisions including pricing, versioning, maintenance, helpdesks and end of life. (iv) shape the direction of the product based on experimentation and system design thinking by learning from product roadmaps, competitive considerations, and allied evolution of demand in digital markets. Caveat: This is not a course on software development or architecture or on product marketing. The role of a product manager is to work with these functions effectively, such that the interests of a product (e.g. its profitability) and its customers are best served. Thus, the perspectives and skills covered in this course are integrative, and allied with decision-making, in their orientation. What you'll learn Product line planning and road mapping alternatives Idea generation, customer need assessment, co-creation, definition and validation of minimal viable product (MVP) and allied set up of requirement documents Alternative approaches for lean, agile and waterfall development, along with the tools for assessing task, project and business risks (and risk mitigation strategies) at scrums or at stage gates. How to launch a product and create a go to market strategy to champion your product Performance Management: Ownership of product related profit (or loss) over various life cycle stages; how to track and optimize system performance metrics while marshalling of social media and third party data towards performance optimization

He also shares what likes about the job (including working across multiple teams internally and externally) and his career trajectory starting at Apple as a project manager which then led him to start his own company and then landed him a product management job at Dropbox. To perform the product management job, Chris shares the daily product management tools that help him do his job like: Google Docs (for feature specs, planning out schedules), HipChat (for team communications) and GChat (for team communications). When it comes to designing and prototyping, Chris works with a very skilled team of designers. They rely on tools like Sketch to build static mockups and Framer.js to build interactive mockups. Interactive mockups are much cheaper and a great way to build and validate a product before investing time and resources to build the actual product. Product Manager Roles Gap

02:15
Many executives make the mistake of thinking of product management roles as tactical functions, so they hire or promote people who are task-oriented and internally focused — doers and tinkerers, rather than thinkers and planners. The best product managers are marketers and strategists. Instead of asking, "What can I do to the product?" the right people in product management roles ask, "What can I do to capture the customer?" They are leaders who function as entrepreneurial CEOs of their product offering with the responsibility for managing revenue and profitability. And they are planners capable of managing the product portfolio throughout the life cycle from innovation to end of life.

Corporations are seeking relentlessly for product leaders who can utilize AI technologies on their products and services to improve the company’s bottom line or top line. It's called the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and it is happening right here, right now. However, as a Product Manager, how do you gain the necessary knowledge to analyze, understand, plan, and design products based on artificial intelligence technologies? Since you cannot get a college degree in AI Product Management, how do you adapt to this rapid change? Adnan helped answer these questions. Adnan Boz is the co-founder of Move to Ai consulting and former Yahoo! Product Manager. Currently, he is helping mid-size businesses to integrate artificial intelligence into their processes; aka cognification. In the past two decades and lately during his work at Yahoo! Homepage, Sports, Finance news, and 20+ international news feed, he developed a unique mix of tech. How to dress for tech product management, PR, and sales job interviews (menswear)

08:18
Don't be fooled by our reputation for ping pong and beer at work -- not everyone shows up to work wearing a hoodie and flip flops -- especially product managers. I've conducted more than 100 job interviews at Google, and in this short video I'll run through some concrete and practical wardrobe suggestions for your job interviews. These guidelines are also appropriate for technology public relations (where I also worked for three years), sales and business development. If you're in a role where you need to represent the company, you'll want to dress more formally than Erlich, Richard, Gilfoyle and Dinesh. Blog post: http://jakehubert.com/2017/08/30/how-to-dress-for-tech/ Update 2017-09-01: For Those Wishing to Dress More Femininely I'm sorry for not including an explicit discussion of womenswear in my initial video! I didn't have any women's clothing in my apartment and was initially focused on answering the question about menswear.  Please rest assured, you absolutely don't have to dress following these traditional male-centric norms for your interviews, or once you're hired. If you wish to dress more femininely (regardless of your gender), all the classic guidance for "business casual" womenswear will apply. For example, you'd fit right in wearing a conservative skirt and blouse, or a business casual dress. This blog post seems to have good suggestions about business casual womenswear: http://stylishlyme.com/what-to-wear/business-casual-attire-for-women/ The same broader principles I've articulated about menswear will apply. For example, I'd still recommend you dress to the "business casual" standard, but consider adding a little personality with your accessories, and don't make the leap to formalwear.

What Now? Becoming a manager is a part of some software developers. They work during some years, get to know the company, get some experience and they eventually become managers. However, the job of a manager includes a lot of different tasks than writing code: you need to manage people, have social skills, have the ability to manage projects, manage time, tasks, etc.~ With all of these tasks, writing code becomes almost secondary and can literally disappear from your day to day and regular tasks.
