JoAnn Manson, MD, DrPH, Chief, Division of Preventive Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, discusses the need for dietary supplements. The main purpose of dietary supplements is to treat deficiencies of vitamins and minerals or to prevent such deficiencies. For people who are concerned that they may not have an adequate diet, it's very reasonable to take a multivitamin or to take relatively low doses of different nutrients. Megadose supplementation, very high dose supplementation of any vitamin, mineral, or other nutrient, is not recommended due to the health risks. Groups that will benefit from dietary supplementation include women of reproductive age and pregnant women. Folic acid is extremely important in preventing neural tube defects and other birth defects so these groups should be encouraged to take a supplement of a folic acid. Also, calcium and vitamin D supplementation may be helpful for bone health, especially in older individuals who are at higher risk of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fracture or people who have lactose intolerance and tend to get very low intake of calcium or vitamin D-fortified foods. There are also some individuals, especially older people, who may have deficiencies of vitamin B-12 and could benefit from supplementation. It’s important to select a high quality supplement. There are a couple of things that will indicate whether a supplement has a high level of quality control. One is looking for the GMP label which stands for Good Manufacturing Practices. The other is USP, which stands for United States Pharmacopeial Convention. These labels will indicate that the supplement has been certified in some way in terms of quality control, that it has gone through a certain audit in terms of the good manufacturing practices, and that it's been tested for contents and for quality control. It’s recommended you speak with your physician before taking any dietary supplement. WALTHAM, MASSACHUSSETTS — A new study by the U.S. federal government discovered that weight loss and energy boosting supplements cause more than 20,000 emergency-room visits a year, the New York Times reported. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, first tracked emergency room visits at 63 hospitals in the U.S. over 10 years, then analyzed those ER visits in which a dietary supplement was implicated. It found that there were about 23,000 emergency-room visits per year linked to dietary supplements, and that more than a quarter of them occurred among people aged 20 to 34. Roughly 10 percent, or about 2,150 cases yearly, were serious enough to require hospitalization. Symptoms included, among others, severe allergic reactions, heart trouble, chest pain, nausea and vomiting, and were tied to dietary supplements including herbal pills, amino acids, and vitamins, which, according to medical experts, are often adulterated with toxic chemicals. Unlike prescription drugs, dietary supplements marketed for weight loss and energy do not have to be approved by the FDA before they are sold to consumers, and do not have to carry any safety label nor a list of side effects. Well, most people in this country do not. That being said you don't even know where the fruit or vegetable was grown, so you don't know about the soil that it was grown in, you don't know how long it's been on the truck, how long it's been in the store and by the time you get it home, how much of the vitamins and minerals are even left in it? So the way I look at a supplement is it's an insurance policy. Now everyone has car insurance but no one plans to crash their car. In terms of supplementation you have to figure out that if an athlete is working out more and maybe eating less food than they need because they have to decrease body fat. When you work out more your needs go up, because you're working out harder and you're trying to lose body fat, trying to build muscle, what have you. So as the needs go up you want to make sure you're getting all the nutrients your body needs without the extra calories. A lot of people feel that if they're taking a multi-vitamin or a supplement of any kind then they don't need to eat their fruits and vegetables, that they're good. And I disagree, there's a lot of things in the fruits and vegetables that we don't even know about yet. So food is always first. Supplements are there just to help out with any kind of deficiencies and in this country you don't have to worry about deficiencies. It's not really about living, it's about optimizing your performance and that's really what the supplements can help you do. "

In this video, I categorize multivitamins, specialty vitamins, protein powders, pre workouts, creatine, BCAA’s, creatine, omega-3’s and joint recovery formulas. Each group is discussed in relation to one of four age brackets regarding their appropriateness. All of the supplements discussed are ones that I take myself and would recommend to others. You will not see any testosterone boosters or pro hormones because I don’t believe in them or recommend them to my viewers. Even the pre workout supplements must undergo severe scrutiny based on the dangers that have been shown to riddle that product category for the past couple of years. All that said however, I make it very clear that any supplementation plan must start with a commitment to good nutrition.
