It used to be that what you saw on a movie set would pretty much be what you saw in the final movie. If you wanted to have a mountain in the background, you'd have to go to one. However with modern technology, CGI has made it possible to have that mountain in the background without even leaving your home. Just whip up a green screen and you're good to go! This advancement in technology has meant for some big differences between what is filmed and what we see in the final movie. Here are some Hollywood movies without the VFX applied! Enjoy :) Read more here: www.famefocus.com Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/focusfame

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The ways that people are consuming films has changed radically especially over the last decade, but has the Hollywood business model kept pace? Frank Smith shares his ideas on the nature of change in the movie industry and its value in a personal sense and a business dynamic. Frank Smith is chief operating officer of Anschutz Film Group (AFG) and Walden Media. Smith has been with AFG since 2003, but currently oversees all aspects of AFG's operations (development, physical production, publishing, marketing and outreach, finance, legal and business affairs). He also works directly with The Anschutz Corporation on strategic planning and general operational issues. During his tenure with AFG, Smith has been lead counsel overseeing large budget motion picture franchise projects, co-production finance and distribution deals with major studios, as well as structuring foreign corporations for multijurisdictional film production tax incentives. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN As we mark the centenary of the United States entering World War I, FRANCE 24 brings you a documentary on the birth of Hollywood. Our journalist Florence Gaillard sheds new light on the first movie stars and the first Hollywood films, which emerged during the conflict in Europe. At the start of the 20th century, while the Europeans were bogged down in World War I, Europe’s film industry was at a standstill. But across the Atlantic, it was starting to take off. Film professionals, who were based in New York and Chicago, were moving to Los Angeles to expand their production. With its sunshine, wide open spaces and the diversity of its landscapes, the Californian metropolis was the perfect setting to welcome ambitious entrepreneurs and artists in search of fame and inspiration. At the time, Hollywood was a small rural community that had just become part of Los Angeles. Filmmakers were starting to build the first open-air sets. Filming was expanding, production techniques were evolving and the first blockbusters were born. The conflict in Europe (1914-1918) soon became a source of inspiration for Hollywood. At first, from 1914 to 1915, films made the case for peace, relaying the US policy of non-intervention. The tone began to change from 1916, with heroes who were clearly taking the side of democracy and the Allied powers. In 1917, when the United States entered the war after three years of neutrality, popular actors – such as Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford – joined forces with Washington to encourage Americans to sign up for war bonds. Finally, 1918 marked the year of anti-German propaganda, nationalism and victory. If the Americans managed to take over the world film market, it was because the Europeans were mired in a seemingly endless war. In just a few years, US filmmakers would go from pioneers to tycoons. The Californian studios combined the production, distribution and exploitation of films. To this day, the Europeans, despite inventing cinema themselves, have never caught up with Hollywood. For this documentary, we consulted archival footage: films, photographs, propaganda content... Four American specialists of the period also brought us their insights: Steven J. Ross and William Deverell, history professors at the University of Southern California, Cari Beauchamp, the author of books on the women who marked the beginnings of US cinema – such as Mary Pickford and Frances Marion – and finally Marc Wanamaker, who has the largest collection of documents on Hollywood. We bring you a flashback to the roots of Hollywood, which is still flourishing today. A documentary produced with the Centenary Partnership Programme. ►► On France 24, also watch our special show "World War One: The war that changed women’s lives" Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/France24_en

In the future, watching movies might cost you 150 bucks. According to The Independent, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas predicted a meltdown in the movie industry yesterday. For all the hopefuls at the University of California's School of Cinematic Arts where they were speaking, this must have been a blow. Instead of inspiring the film students with promising talk of a career in filmmaking, the two directors instead said this is an "interesting time" for the film industry. I think by interesting, they meant rocky. Spielberg, director of Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park- basically the man who made childhood awesome-said that Hollywood studios are only interested in investing in blockbusters, movies that will appeal to everyone, and will likely earn a ton of money. This is because people have so many entertainment options nowadays studios are likely to lose money by producing films that may be great in quality but do no have mass appeal, like biopics or indie films. He said: "You're at the point right now where a studio would rather invest $250m in one film for a real shot at the brass ring than make a whole bunch of really interesting, deeply personal -- and even maybe historical -- projects that may get lost in the shuffle." And Spielberg should know. He reportedly had difficulty getting his Oscar winning film Lincoln onto the big screen. It almost aired on HBO as a television film, and this is Steven Spielberg we're talking about. Imagine how difficult it would be for a new filmmaker, fresh out of college, to get studios interested in their movies. That is one problem for up and coming film-makers. Another problem is, when a 250 million dollar blockbuster fails, that's a big loss for studios, and if several of these blockbusters flop, then Hollywood would be forced to change its current business model and charge more for each blockbuster creating a gap between blockbuster pricing and other films. And that's exactly what Spielberg thinks will happen. He says audiences may end up having to pay 25 dollars for the next superhero epic like Iron Man and only 7 dollars to see an artsy historical film like Lincoln. Lucas, creator of Star Wars, agreed with Spielberg and said "What you're going to end up with is fewer theaters. Bigger theaters, with a lot of nice things. Going to the movies is going to cost you 50 bucks, maybe 100. Maybe 150." Yikes. So what's going to happen? Spielberg thinks that a lot of great filmmakers may be forced to put their less main stream work on television, and the small screen may become the big screen for more outside-the-box films. And if movie tickets really cost 150 dollars, a lot of us might just choose to watch TV instead. I know I would. So what do you think is going to happen to the film industry? Do you agree with Spielberg and Lucas? Comment below and don't forget to like, subscribe and check out more from the RunList.

Motion Picture Production, Processes, History... playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL946E9DAD36E3CC64 more at http://quickfound.net Mitchell Camera Corporation, Glendale, California, makes motion picture cameras for Hollywood moviemaking. From the National Association of Manufacturers "Industry on Parade" newsreel. Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitchell_Camera Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ The Mitchell Camera Corporation was founded in 1919 by Americans Henry Boeger and George Alfred Mitchell as the National Motion Picture Repair Co. Their first camera was designed and patented by John E. Leonard in 1917, from 1920 on known as the Mitchell Standard. Features included a planetary gear-driven variable shutter (US Patent No 1,297,703) and a unique rack-over design (US Pat No 1,297,704). Mitchell supplied camera intermittent movements for Technicolor's Three-Strip camera (1932), and such movements for others' 65mm and VistaVision conversions before later making complete 65mm and VistaVision cameras (normal and high speed). Mitchell also made a pin-registered background plate projector with a carbon arc lamphouse which was synchronized with the film camera. One of the first MPRPPs (Mitchell Pin Registered Process Projector) was used in Gone with the Wind. Two- and three-headed background projectors evolved for VistaVision effects. George Mitchell received an Academy Honorary Award in 1952. The Mitchell Camera Company received an Academy Award for Technical Achievement in 1939, 1966 and 1968... Models Mitchell Standard 35mm camera - The original Mitchell rackover pin-registered studio camera, introduced in 1920 as a hand-cranked silent film camera. (The rackover device allowed the camera portion with its side-mounted viewfinder to be "racked over" upon its base by turning a handle on the rear of the camera base. By racking to the right, the operator would focus the lens upon a ground glass element seen through the viewfinder. By racking back to the left, the camera with its film would be brought into position to record the view of the now focused lens. This standard model came with a 4-lens turret, a matte box on rails mounted to the front of the camera, and options included a veeder film footage counter, behind the lens iris, 4-way adjustable frame mattes, automatic or hand dissolve, internal matte disk with 9 pre-cut mattes including 1/2 frame, circles, keyhole, binocular, and oval. Various improvements and available options on this model took place over subsequent years, including a frames-per-second film speed meter, addition of a side-view parallax finder with upright view, various electric motors including variable speed, constant speed, and synchronized motors. The talking pictures introduced in 1926 soon required this somewhat noisy camera to run quieter with the so-called "silent" film movements, and soon thereafter a higher-speed "silent" movement and follow-focus devices were made available... Mitchell GC - Introduced in 1940, and based on the Standard model, but without the studio special effects, a High-speed camera system, able to run at variable speeds up to 128 frames per second...

Over the years I've noticed that with the exception of Marvel movies (Avengers Infinity War, Spiderman, Ironman etc.) the theatre is becoming increasingly empty. This is no coincidence as some of the most talked about & best content is coming from Netflix and other streaming services (Stranger Things, Ozark). As I made this video, I dived deeper into the origins/history of cinema. After identifying certain patterns, I've come up with a film theory as to what the future of cinema may be. - Steven #BeHonest http://zmde.ca Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/zmdemagazine Twitter: https://twitter.com/zmdecreative Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zmdecreative

Interview by Connie Chung (1989): Actor Activist Marlon Brando explains how he tried in vain for 10 years and spent millions of dollars, wrote many different movie screenplays to have a movie produced about the Genocide and Rights of Native American Indians. MGM Marlon Brando was an extraordinary human being and one of the first actor-activists to march for Black American and American Indian rights. He spoke out against racism often and forcefully. He marched in demonstrations. And he gave money to civil rights groups. "When they laid down their arms, we murdered them. We lied to them. We cheated them out of their lands. We starved them into signing fraudulent agreements that we called treaties which we never kept. We turned them into beggars on a continent that gave life for as long as life can remember. And by any interpretation of history, however twisted, we did not do right. We were not lawful nor were we just in what we did. For them, we do not have to restore these people, we do not have to live up to some agreements, because it is given to us by virtue of our power to attack the rights of others, to take their property, to take their lives when they are trying to defend their land and liberty, and to make their virtues a crime and our own vices virtues." ~Marlon Brando For the 45th Annual Academy Awards® in 1973, Liv Ullmann and Roger Moore presented the award and inspiring Marlon Brando (April 3, 1924 - July 1, 2004) did not attend and refused to accept the Oscar for his performance in The Godfather. American Indian Apache Sacheen Littlefeather represented him at the ceremony. She appeared in full Apache clothing and stated that owing to the "poor treatment of American Indians in the film industry", Brando would not accept the award. --THAT IS HOW CELIBRITIES SHOULD SUPPORT!-- Brando expressed his increasing disgust for the racist film industry and even for the acting profession. We need more celebrities following Marlon Brando's stand for social justice. An inspiring man who stood tall against injustice. Who is following that example today? Going to see a movie in China is different than in the west. Only a certain number of western films can be shown in Chinese cinemas, so there are less options for a westerner in China who doesn't speak Chinese. Hollywood is changing because of China's film policies. Some production companies are catering to the Chinese market - adding pro-China scenes, casting in order to be compliant with the Chinese regulations. Other films will be banned from Chinese theaters because they are too violent, too sexual, or even too damaging to China's reputation. In this video I talk about: how the American film industry is effected by China, how China decides which foreign films make it to cinemas in China, how Hollywood is catering to China, and how China decides release dates for Hollywood blockbusters in China. I also show you how to order tickets for the cinema, and take you to see Spiderman: Homecoming (kind of). ---/// ABOUT ME \\\--- I live in China and am constantly exploring and traveling the country and other parts of Asia. Inside Chollywood: China's Movie Industry In 2006, when Tang Long made the long journey from rural Hubei to the Hengdian World Studios in eastern China, he had one dream in mind – to make it as an actor. Arriving at the largest outdoor film set in the world, where hundreds of productions take place every year, he knew nothing about the film industry and no one in it. Tang started out as an extra, and was paid $4 a day to be part of a large crowd in the background of a scene. The next step up would be what the industry calls a "contract extra", where he gets a close-up shot, possibly with a line if he is lucky. "I never made it," says Tang, who stands at about 1.6 metres tall. "I don't have the physique and there was just too much competition. Everyone here is dreaming of stardom and trying to show off their talents." To feed himself, Tang took on any behind-the-scenes role that came along. As a tea boy with a can-do attitude, he quickly impressed and worked his way up to managing location runners. "I don't have to be a star; I just want to be in this industry. I'm passionate about it," he says. "Many foreign filmmakers are eyeing the massive Chinese market, they want to shoot here. Hollywood professionals spend a lifetime accumulating heaps of experience. We can learn a lot from them in co-productions." Co-productions are a gold-class ticket for Hollywood into Chinese cinema, the world's second-largest movie market, that has been growing at 30 percent a year over the past decade. The boom lured an A-list Hollywood cast to China recently, to celebrate the launch of an $8bn movie metropolis, built by China's richest man, Wang Jianlin. It will be completed in just four years, and will provide world class facilities for 100 local and foreign productions a year, boosting China's global cultural influence. Shi Chuan, a film professor at Shanghai University, explains the boom: "Nearly 80 to 90 percent of Chinese had never been to cinemas, which were only found in bigger cities. The current growth is happening in the second and third tier cities where there used to be no cinemas. Therefore there's massive potential." To cater to Chinese taste, Hollywood is adding Chinese elements to the plot. Shi cites this year's blockbuster Iron Man 3 as an example. The Chinese release had four minutes of extra footage with China-related elements, mostly deleted for the international version. Hollywood also made the latest James Bond film Skyfall 'China-friendly' - a Chinese security guard who was killed in the original version did not exist for viewers in China. Well-known Chinese director Zhang Yuan says local filmmakers get a much more rigorous time from the censors. His latest film, Beijing Flickers, explores marginalised communities in Beijing and he says it was held up by the authorities for over a year before its release in early November this year. Zhang says censors stifle creativity. "Before government censorship, we were already self-censoring when scripting, shooting and editing," he says. "A flood can flush away the White House in a Hollywood film. Which Chinese film dares to do the equivalent?" Meanwhile, the Chinese box office is booming - 10 new cinema screens are added in China every day and box office revenue has exceeded $3bn this year and is expected to surpass that of North America in just six years. In 2013, for the first time, domestic films sold more tickets than imported ones. To protect the domestic industry, China only allows 34 foreign films a year to screen in cinemas. Local productions also get a bigger share of ticket sales, making it even more tempting for foreign studios to work with them. Bona Film Group is China's leading privately-owned film producer and distributor - its ambition is to find a happy marriage between East and West. In 2012, it signed deals with Universal Studios and Fox International Productions. Bona is now working with Fox on their first co-production to be released next year. Its CEO, Yu Dong, says Hollywood will benefit China with its established global distribution network. "Chinese cinema needs to enter the English language market in a hurry," says Yu Dong. "Hollywood products can enter any market in the world, be it Chinese, Arabic or anywhere else. So co-productions with Chinese film companies will propel its films into the English language market." But as more Chinese filmmakers enter the industry to ride the boom, film professor Shi Chuan says production quality has fallen compared to the 1980s. Out of more than 700 films produced this year, three quarters were deemed not good enough for theatrical release.
