Time Magazine Dec 5 2011 issue Will be Censored in the United States

09:02
This Upcoming issue of Times Magazine will be censored in the United States with a picture dealing with Anxiety, while in other countries it will be dealing with the truth of world crisis naming the issue Revolution Redux. As Jack Nicholson boldly states in the movie - A Few Good Men...."You can't handle the truth!" or Can you handle the truth? It was just reported that jobless claims went down, to "give Americans hope" but do you realize its December, of course jobs go up because people hire part time seasonal help and with the boost of Christmas spending but after flooding the Europe economy with more FED printed money and the 7.7 trillion the FED secretly handed out There is a major prediction that I agree with at the video end that I think you will all be interested in hearing if you can handle the truth. . This is a commentary on the deception of Media http://anondora.org/member/anondora

Actually, this isn't the first issue because there was an issue #0. Not really sure how that works. This issue covers most, but not all of the launch games, including Sonic Adventure, SoulCalibur, Power Stone, NFL 2K, and more. Only a couple of games actually got reviewed though, and most game coverage comes in the form of previews. Issue #2 has many more of the launch games reviewed in it. Send us a post card! Classic Gaming Quarterly PO Box 73126 Davis, CA 95617 Show notes: - Big thanks to Atari Age forum member "Vector" for basically donating the entire run of Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine to the show for the price of shipping. - When possible, game play footage was recorded using a Dreamcast VGA cable passed through a Behar Bros. sync combiner and upscaled with a Framemeister. For games that are not VGA compatible, I literally pointed a camera at the TV screen. - The "face cam" footage is grainy because I used the wrong ISO setting. It should be better next time. - This is the fourth CGQ video to be sponsored by Dollar Shave Club. Thanks, DSC! You guys are helping keep these "Let's Read" shows on the air! PSM PlayStation Magazine Issue #1 - September 1997

32:27
Episode 22 - This week on the show, let's read PSM #1, which was the first gaming magazine that I ever bought, back in August of 1997. 100% Independent PlayStation Magazine was an awesome magazine that started in 1997 covering the PS1and continued on to cover the PlayStation 2 eventually (and perhaps ironically) becoming the official PlayStation magazine. The PSX was the first system that I owned as an adult, and reading the previews and reviews in this magazine kept me abreast of what was going on so that I could buy whatever awesome new games were coming out. Probably extremely long-winded and definitely not for everybody. GamePro Issue #1 - May/June 1989

55:06
Episode 49 - The premiere issue of GamePro, from May/June of 1989. A multi-platform magazine based in the Bay Area of California, it started out as a bimonthly periodical, but switched to monthly after just 3 issues. GamePro and Electronic Gaming Monthly were the two most-popular multiplatform gaming magazines in the 1990's, covering both sides of the 16-bit console wars. GamePro also had an associated TV show in the early 90's, called GamePro TV and hosted by J.D. Roth. While EGM targeted teenage gamers, GamePro went after a younger crowd, featuring shorter, more easily digestible articles and cartoony graphics. This first issue, as expected, primarily covers the Nintendo Entertainment System, but also touches on the Sega Master System, and to a much lesser extent, the Atari 7800 ProSystem. In the earlier days of the magazine, GamePro had not yet taken on the "kiddie" persona, and featured longer-form editorial content and scoreless reviews. Show notes: - I used a lavalier mic to record this entire episode. It isn't terrible, but I much prefer the sound that I get out of my AT 2020 mics. - I recorded all of the game play footage for this episode using a RetroPie-equipped Raspberry Pi plumbed into my Elgato. Normally I'm not a fan of capturing emulator footage, but I think it's OK for these magazine readthroughs, and it's a lot more convenient. - This issue of GamePro was generously donated to the show by "Brian" from Ottawa, Ontario. Thanks, Brian! Beyoncé Covers Time Magazines 100 Most Influential People 2014 Issue

00:57
If she did run the world before, well, it's safe to say that she does now. Queen B landed one of the biggest and most important annual covers in existence, gracing Time Magazine's 2014 100 Most Influential People issue. First things first, she looks better than ever in the cover photo, in a white high waisted bikini and sheer top. To give you some background as to why landing this cover is such a massive accolade, let's just say that last year's cover went to Malala Yousafzai, who became well-known around the world for her bravery in advocating for other young women. And if there's anyone in the entertainment world that screams girl empowerment and success, it's Beyonce. In just the last year alone, Beyonce single-handedly rocked and reinvented the music game with her surprise album release, on top of which she sold out the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. All this, and she's Jay Z's wife and Blue Ivy's mom. Oh an in case you were wondering...this meme says it all -- you have the same number of hours in your day as Beyonce. That's giving us some serious inspiration. Other people making Time's 100 list include Benedict Cumberbatch, Matthew McConaughey, Pharrell Williams, Miley Cyrus, Carrie Underwood, Amy Adams, the Pope and Hillary Clinton. What do you guys think of Beyonce landing the 2014 Time cover? Hit the comments section to let us know why you think she's deserving of this title and click here to watch us break down the top 5 power couples of all time -- here's hint, Beyonce might have made this list. 4535 Time magazine covers, 1923-2009

02:39
Lev Manovich and Jeremy Douglass / Software Studies Initiative (softwarestudies.com) / 2009-2010. Explorations of patterns in 4535 Time magazine covers, 1923-2009. ---------------------------- Data: The covers of every issue of Time magazine published from 1923 to summer 2009. Total number of covers: 4535. The large percentage of the covers included red borders. We cropped these borders and scaled all images to the same size to allow a user see more clearly the temporal patterns across all covers. ---------------------------- Timescale: 1923-2009. ---------------------------- Mapping: Time covers appear in order of publication (i.e., from 1923 to 2009), arranged in a grid layout (left to right and top to bottom). ---------------------------- Mapping 4535 Time covers into a grid organized by publicatoon date reveals a number of historical patterns. Here are some of them: Medium: In the 1920s and 1930s Time covers use mostly photography. After 1941, the magazine switches to paintings. In the later decades the photography gradually comes to dominate again. In the 1990s we see emergence of the contemporary software-based visual language which combines manipulated photography, graphic and typographic elements. Color vs. black and white: The shift from early black and white to full color covers happens gradually, with both types coexisting for many years. Hue: Distinct "color periods" appear in bands: green, yellow/brown, red/blue, yellow/brown again, yellow, and a lighter yellow/blue in the 2000s. Brightness: The changes in brightness (the mean of all pixels' grayscale values for each cover) follow a similar cyclical pattern. Contrast and Saturation: Both gradually increase throughout the 20th century. However, since the end of the 1990s, this trend is reversed: recent covers have less contrast and less saturation. Content: Initially most covers are portraits of individuals set against neutral backgrounds. Over time, portrait backgrounds change to feature compositions representing concepts. Later, these two different strategies come to co-exist: portraits return to neutral backgrounds, while concepts are now represented by compositions which may include both objects and people -- but not particular individuals. The visualization also reveals an important "metapattern": almost all changes are gradual. Each of the new communication strategies emerges slowly over a number of months, years or even decades.

Nintendo Power Issue #1 - July/August 1988

Buy "Console Wars": http://amzn.to/2unQj3g Check out CGQ+ : http://www.youtube.com/cgqplus Episode 48 - The premiere issue of Nintendo Power, from the summer of 1988. Nintendo had been sending out a free newsletter, the Nintendo Fun Club News, to registered Nintendo owners. But in the summer 0f 1988, they made the shift to a full-blown, Nintendo-centric magazine. Nintendo Power was available on the news stands for $3.50, or a 6-issue, 1-year subscription could be purchased for $15. In this first issue of the magazine, such NES classic as Super Mario Bros. 2, Contra, and Double Dragon are covered in-depth, along with previews of upcoming games like Marble Madness and Gun.Smoke. For many gamers of my generation, this was the first magazine we ever owned. As such, its iconic status really can't be over-stated. I personally never had a subscription to Nintendo Power because we just didn't have the money, but I often read my best friend's issues and to this day the nostalgia pours off of each page. Show notes: - This is the first episode of the show in which I used a 2-camera setup. I think this helps break things up visually and makes the show more interesting. The second camera also gives me "someone" to talk to when I'm relating personal anecdotes about the games being discussed. - I have wanted to do a read-through of this issue since I got the idea to do these magazine videos, but wanted to wait until I thought I had the hang of it well enough. Based on how this episode turned out, I'm glad that I waited. - Portions of this episode were recorded on three separate days, but I always put the same shirt back on, to maintain continuity. Die Hard GameFan Issue #2 - December 1992

48:02
Episode 37 - Let's read Die Hard GameFan volume 1 issue 2 from December of 1992, but first let's just take a quick look at how the magazine got started: Diehard Game Club was a video game store and mail order business in Tarzana California. The store was owned by Dave Halverson, who back then advertised his mail order business in the back of Electronic Gaming Monthly. These advertisements were created by a guy named Tim Lindquist, a layout artist who had a side-job doing freelance ad design. Halverson started distributing quarterly game catalogs to his customers, and hired Lindquist to design them. In late 1992 these catalogs morphed into the magazine Diehard Game Fan. The first issue of the magazine was actually self-published and printed at Lindquist's day job at “TV Fanfare Publications”, who published free-to-distribute magazines like “Sports & Soaps” One of the employees at the store actually drove around the Los Angeles area dropping stacks of this issue off, for free, to any newsstand willing to sell them. By the time the second issue was ready to print, Halverson had made a deal with a magazine distributor, and Diehard Gamefan was available nation-wide. Show notes: - This is the first magazine readthrough that I've done in almost exactly a year. I was planning on stopping the series, but have gotten requests for more. - I am still very unhappy with the quality of the video footage of the magazine itself (which is part of the reason why I stopped doing these). Unfortunately, if I don't shoot in lower light, there is too much glare from the glossy paper of the magazine. Still working on figuring out a better lighting scheme. - This should have been a quick episode to produce, but I wanted to up the production quality by overlaying footage of the games I was talking about, and I wanted to add the section at the beginning covering the history of the magazine. This made the episode take at least 10x longer to put together. - All video game footage featured in this episode was recorded using an emulator (either OpenEmu or MAME), because it just wasn't worth recording actual hardware when I was only going to use 10 or so seconds of the footage. All the usual crapola that no one reads: Facebook: http://goo.gl/3kDiqt Twitter: http://twitter.com/CGQuarterly Homepage: http://www.cgquarterly.com All video game footage featured on Classic Gaming Quarterly is recorded from actual game hardware, unless otherwise noted. Jonas Mekas – The first issue of Film Culture magazine (51/135)

04:31
Born in Lithuania in 1922, Jonas Mekas, poet, philosopher and film-maker, has made hundreds of films and set up the Anthology Film Archive. He emigrated to American in 1949 where he earned the title of 'the godfather of American avant-garde cinema'. [Listener: Amy Taubin] TRANSCRIPT: The first people that were helpful to make contacts were Hans Richter and Herman Weinberg. Herman Weinberg had very close to all the Hollywood people and he called the Orson Wells, to get people like Orson Wells. Others you know I called or wrote directly and expanded very, because everybody was very excited that there is a new publication because there was nothing. In 54, December 54, when the first issue came out, there was only Films in the Review or the review of films, that's Henry- "Films in Review", yeah- -which is a miserable little nit-witty nothing and in the University of California, there was the "Hollywood Quarterly". I think it was called, "Film Quarterly", which was very serious and very good. It used to just come out once a year, never maybe four or five issues that came out and then there was the extreme left publication "Film Sense". It was nothing, nothing else. Everything else came "Sight and Sound", "Sequence" from England and "Cahiers du Cinema" from France and nothing else here. So, when this came out, I mean it was very bleak and to them, enthusiasm and support and was very easy to test, sort of, you know, of course needed some persuasion and especially and one of my co-editors that I had befriended some time before, to talk, we need somebody from Europe was George Fennin. George Fennin came from Italy and grew up there and knew everybody in France and from Bazin to Aristarto in Italy and traveled, went to all, because he was writing for Italian publications. So, I thought he will be and we were friends and- drinking friends so, you know, come here on the Editorial Board. So, when they first see who came up, and he was also president of the Foreign Correspondents Association in New York. He said, ah, we have a room at Waldorf Astoria, which is our room when we have meetings and this next week, so, we have no meetings but we have that space. Why don't we present "Film Culture" magazine, the first issue, at Waldorf Astoria, in this room. This, of course, it's very nice. So, we are there at Waldorf Astoria and this huge space, you know, where all the presidents are staying, so the [?] told the local filmmaking community and I remember Willem Mast come in with, how do you, where do you get this money to get? In any case, after the opening, and plus, you see, they were provided, we were provided with drinks and everything else on the account of the Foreign Journalists Association, okay. So, later, the people did not know what to think about, you know, are we, first they got the idea that this is serious, if they can have an opening presentation of the first issue at Waldorf Astoria, we have to take them seriously. So, that helped, of course. On the other hand, when we were asking for money, it's, why, you need money? I mean, you don't have money? You had this opening at Waldorf Astoria. I said, no I'm slaving at Graphic Studios.

New York Times Magazine Climate Change Issue - Panel Discussion

01:27:42
On August 5, 2018, the New York Times Magazine published a special issue devoted entirely to global warming. Writer Nathaniel Rich investigates what we understood about climate change in the 1980s, how close we came to taking national action, and why that effort failed, with enormous consequences since. The magazine also includes an aerial photo and video essay on climate-change impacts across the globe by photographer George Steinmetz. The project was made possible with the support of the Pulitzer Center. Please join us on Monday, September 10 at 5:30 p.m. for presentations by Nathaniel and George followed by a panel discussion with the Pulitzer Center’s Executive Director, Jon Sawyer, and moderated by Dr. Anthony Leiserowitz, Director of the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.

00:26
Brilliant Brainz is a monthly print magazine for 6 to 12 year olds. It is creative, colourful, inspiring and educational with lots of suggestions for activities to do at home. With the current emphasis on literacy and numeracy in primary schools, less time can be given to subjects like music, art, cookery, nutrition, sport and health and the sciences. Yet these subjects can help a child develop their creative thinking skills, bring huge benefits to their learning abilities and provide a broad and well-rounded education. You can find these topics and more inside each issue of Brilliant Brainz. Get those brain cells buzzing!
Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue #6 - January 1990

58:46
Episode 45 - Let's read Electronic Gaming Monthly issue #6 from January of 1990. This is the oldest issue of EGM that we have in the CGQ archives. At this time, Nintendo controlled about 90% of the video game market with the NES, but NEC's TurboGrafx-16 and Sega's Genesis had both been out for about 4 months, and the Game Boy had been out for about 5. Notable games featured in this issue include Batman and DuckTales on the NES, Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Rambo III, and Forgotten Worlds on the Genesis, and Dragon Spirit and Galaga '90 on the TurboGrafx-16. Show notes: - This is the first episode of Classic Gaming Quarterly to be shot with our new Sony AX-53 4K camcorder. While I'm not planning on uploading most videos in 4K, I think that it helps the magazine read-throughs by giving viewers a higher-resolution viewing option. - While the audio for the read-through itself was recorded using the same AT2020 mic that I always use, the intro and outro audio was recorded using a Sony ECM-CS3 lavalier mic plugged straight into the camera. This is the first episode in which this mic was used. - This is the second "Let's Read" episode to feature an issue of EGM. - All NES footage was recorded from actual game hardware using an XRGB-Mini "Framemeister" and an Elgato Game Capture HD. Footage of Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, and Game Boy games were recorded using OpenEmu because I was too lazy to hook up the consoles. - I really liked what I did with the iPad during the show intro. I think I might start doing that from now on. - The fabric underneath the magazine is actually a pillowcase. The artwork on it is from "The Avengers" All the usual crapola that no one reads: Official Classic Gaming Quarterly t-shirts: http://amzn.to/2aycwli Facebook: http://goo.gl/3kDiqt Twitter: http://twitter.com/CGQuarterly Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/cgquarterly/ Homepage: http://www.cgquarterly.com All video game footage featured on Classic Gaming Quarterly is recorded from actual game hardware, unless otherwise noted. As of episode 35, it is recorded in RGB using an XRGB Mini Framemeister and an Elgato Game Capture HD. Prior to that, it was recorded in s-video using am RGB to s-video encoder and a DVD recorder. All videos are edited on a Mac Pro using Final Cut Pro X. Most box art featured in CGQ videos comes from The Cover Project (www.thecoverproject.net). Check them out for all of your video game insert needs. Other box art and magazine scans come from Matt Henzel Video Game Obsession (www.videogameobsession.com). Many, many other photos appear thanks to Wikimedia Commons and Evan Amos. Theme music courtesy of Kevin MacLeod: (www.smartsound.com/royalty-free-music/incompetech) #CGQuarterly #LetsRead

The Archives | SURFER Volume 1, Issue 1

02:41
In 1960 John Severson published the first issue of “The Surfer.” Its 36 pages were a compilation of photos he took while filming “Surf Fever,” his own illustrations, some editorial, and a few ads. Flyers announcing “The Surfer is coming!” were pasted the windows of surf shops. Former Surfer Magazine Publisher Steve Pezman told the Los Angeles Times “I promptly stole the flyer off the wall of the surf shop, which was how hungry we[surfers] were for printed validation.” Surfers lined up to buy copies. Many surfers’ earliest memories of Surfer is being a grom and thumbing through it with friends. Somebody would bring the latest issue to school, and try to pull it out of their backpack without it getting ripped to shreds by a pack of fellow frothers. Huddled around the mag, pages would turn, guesses of where the spots in the photos were shouted out, cases pleaded as to why they were right or wrong. Analyzing, absorbing and critiquing every aspect of the magazine before cutting out prime stoke-inducing photos to be scotch-taped to a bedroom wall surf collage—a Surfer Magazine reader tradition that seems to transcend the decades. As we grew older, we'd thumb through a mag looking for our favorite writers, storytellers, and photographers. We searched for photos and tales of exotic waves to spark our own travel missions. We hunted for shots of our most cherished surfers. We sought connection in the words of thoughtful essayists. It's hard to remember now in our digital age, but we even flipped through the pages looking for cutting-edge surf news. Over the years, the stories, photos, art direction and the ads in Surfer became little time capsules for our surfing lives. To celebrate those moments, to capture a bit of nostalgia, we're announcing a new video series called "The Surfer Archives." Each week we'll be pulling an issue from the canon that is Surfer's archive and dropping a video of it getting the ole' thumb through. Take a stroll down nostalgia lane and enjoy. If there’s a specific issue you’d like to see, feel free to let us know.
