Diving birds Pelicans bombing for fish! Nice Pelican pictures!

01:38
Diving birds! Pelicans bombing for fish! Nice Pelican pictures! Pelican diving for fish is something! When two pelicans diving for fish it looks exceptionally beautiful! Pelicans are a genus of large water birds comprising the family Pelecanidae. They are characterized by a long beak and large throat pouch used in catching prey and draining water from the scooped up contents before swallowing. They have predominantly pale plumage, the exceptions being the Brown and Peruvian Pelicans. The bills, pouches and bare facial skin of all species become brightly colored before the breeding season. The eight living pelican species have a patchy global distribution, ranging latitudinaly from the tropics to the temperate zone, though they are absent from interior South America as well as from polar regions and the open ocean. Fossil evidence of pelicans dates back at least 30 million years, to the remains of a beak very similar to that of modern species recovered from Oligocene strata in France. Long thought to be related to frigate birds, cormorants, tropic birds, gannets and boobies, pelicans are now known instead to be most closely related to the Shoebill and Hamerkop, and are placed in the order Pelican forms. Ibises, spoonbills and herons are more distant relatives, and have been classified in the same order. Pelicans frequent inland and coastal waters where they feed principally on fish, catching them at or near the water surface. Gregarious birds, they often hunt cooperatively and breed colonially. Four white-plumage species tend to nest on the ground, and four brown or grey-plumage species nest mainly in trees. The relationship between pelicans and people has often been contentious. The birds have been persecuted because of their perceived competition with commercial and recreational fishers. They have suffered from habitat destruction, disturbance and environmental pollution, and three species are of conservation concern. They also have a long history of cultural significance in mythology, and in Christian and heraldic iconography.

11:28
In this episode of BlacktipH, Josh is joined once again by NFL star linebacker Sam Barrington from the Green Bay Packers to go fishing for monster goliath groupers off the coast of Florida. We started off the day catching bonito (false albacore) for bait. After catching half a dozen albies for bait, Sam was ready to start goliath grouper fishing. Sam hooked up to his first goliath grouper and immediately got yanked forward. After an intense short fight, Sam Barrington landed his first goliath grouper. The day ended with Sam catching four goliath groupers. Sam's friends Johan and Richard both caught a goliath grouper, adding up a total of six goliath groupers for the day. • Follow Sam on Instagram → http://bit.ly/instagram-sam • Follow Sam on Twitter → http://bit.ly/twitter-sam • Follow Sam on Snapchat → sambarrington ► Ceuticore Nutrition: http://bit.ly/ceuticore ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ABOUT BLACKTIPH ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ BlacktipH Fishing brings you some of the most exciting fishing videos on the web. Fish Corals and Models Star in Underwater Red Sea Photo Challenge

01:53
Dozens of underwater photographers film fish, corals and fashion models in the Eilat Red Sea competition. Full story: Dozens of underwater photographers compete for the top spot in this year's Eilat Red Sea shootout. The unique photo contest challenges photographers to combine diving technique and artistic expression. For three days, photographers focus their lenses on fish, fashion and shipwrecks in the Gulf of Eilat. The winning photos cannot be altered in any way—and first place takes home a US $10,000 prize. While Eilat isn't the most popular diving destination in the world, competition organizer David Pilosof says it's ideal for the contest. [David Pilosof, Producer fo Eilat Red Sea Competition]: "Eilat is considered I would say the best spot, or the best dive destination for such a competition because the dive sites that the competitors have to go, they don't need boats or other vehicles to go to. They just step off the beach and they are there." Photographers spent hours searching the seabed for exotic creatures. And some brought the beauty to the sea - which posed its own challenges. Models needed to take gulps of air from a scuba tank held by another diver in between takes and directions could only be given by hand signals. Contestant Mark Fuller took first prize for the Five Best Images category. [Mark Fuller, Contestant and Winner]: "We are in the water doing five times a day, so you're wet the whole day, it's cold at night. You don't sleep very much in the night, because you're constantly thinking about what you are going to do. So it's a lot of pressure if you're taking it really seriously. Very tiring. But it's worth it when you win the prize." A lot of work to capture one moment in time. Top 5 Ugliest Fish

05:17
Top 5 ugliest fish! Many ugly animals live in the water of the deep sea & are real beauties. These scary ocean creatures, like the blobfish, are rare. Subscribe for the latest videos: https://goo.gl/7xzjzR 5: The Lumpsucker/Henfish Found lurking at the bottom of the cool waters of the Arctic, North Atlantic, and North Pacific ocean is the Lumpsucker. Although lumpsuckers are cute as babies, they tend to grow up to look something like this... Sometimes referred to as the Henfish, the Lumpsucker is typically 1-2 feet long with a asymmetrical, blob-like body with protruded eyes. And while most fish have a narrow frame, the Lumpsucker tends to be more spherical. They also have skin instead of scales along with a giant dorsal fin. Although the lumpsucker may not be a great swimmer, they have impressive endurance and can travel up to 60 miles. Their diet consists mostly of smaller fish, crustaceans, worms, and jellyfish. Fun fact: The male's stomach turns red during mating and the eggs of the female (aka roe) are a popular alternative to caviar. 4: Snailfish Snailfish, sometimes referred to as Sea Snails, pretty much look like giant tadpoles. They have a large head with small eyes and an elongated body, which resembles an eel. Like the Lumpsucker, this fish also has skin instead of scales. Surprisingly little is known about the snailfish. There are over 410 different species each being different from the rest. Some live in shallow water, while others live in the deepest parts of the ocean. Some are 2 inches long, while others are 30 inches long. Some live in warm water, others live in cold. Some are smooth, some are prickly. Some have a strict diet, others eat anything they can. You get the idea…But all of them are but pretty ugly and they don’t taste great either, fisherman consider them pests. 3: The Goblin Shark The Goblin Shark is real and it certainly lives up to it’s name. The image you are seeing is not photoshopped, the shark actually does look like the offspring of a goblin and a shark. It has a long protruded snout which contains over 50 creepy nail-like teeth and a jaw that extends outward when biting. The skin is an unappealing pinkish white, almost as if it was never fully developed. No only does the goblin shark look and sound creepy, but it acts creepy too! It’s a deep sea bottom dweller, meaning it is found in the deepest and darkest parts of the ocean, 4200 feet below, in pitch black. It’s also considered a “slow moving species”, which it basically means that it’s constantly lurking. Like other sharks, it senses its prey using Electro sensitive organs and uses its extending jaw to snap out for a quick capture. This shark is unlike any other shark, it is a unique species with a lineage dating back 125 million years ago and it’s not related to the ones on earth today. Overall very little is known about goblin shark, mostly because it’s a deep sea creature and humans rarely come in contact with them. But we don’t even know how they mate, a pregnant goblin shark has never been discovered…for all we know it spawns! 2: The Gulper Eel Number 2 on our list is the gulper eel, aka pelican eel. The fish is technically not an eel, but it’s about the closet thing that it resembles. It can be found at depths over 9000 feet below sea level or almost 2 miles deep. Even for the deep sea, this is one of the oddest creatures that has ever been discovered. The fish is dark black in color and can grow up to 31 inches long, but the most notable feature of the Gulper Eel is it’s unusually large mouth which acts as a net to capture prey. The fish also has a stomach capable of stretching which allows for it to consume prey larger than itself. The Gulper Eel is known to not be a very good swimmer, but a small luminous organ at the end of it’s tail acts as a light to help lure and capture prey. Not much is known about this strange creature due to the depths of it’s habitat, but we’re pretty confident that it looks weird. 1: The Blobfish And finally, number 1 on our list: the Blobfish. You’ve likely seen random photos online of this atrocity and may have dismissed them as being photoshopped, but the photos are real and the blob fish actually does look like this, but here’s the catch: it only looks like this out of water. The truth is, we don’t actually know what blobfish looks like in it’s natural environment because the fish is extremely rare and lives at depths over 4000 feet below. And water pressure at this depth is about 100 times stronger than that on land. Because the fish has no skeletal structure, not even teeth, the blobfish becomes heavily, perhaps even morbidly, disfigured when brought to land. Although we’re not certain what the Blobfish actually looks like in the deep sea, it’s likely safe to assume from the pictures that it’s probably still pretty ugly.

Have you ever pointed at the screen and said this when watching Shark Week on the Discovery channel? This very thing happened to me one time, although not in this particular video. 11 BIGGEST Fish Ever Caught

08:04
From greenland sharks, to the Mekong Giant Catfish that was bigger than a grizzly bear, these are 11 BIGGEST Fish Ever Caught ! A 15 foot greenland shark was reeled in by an angler in a kayak in 2014. Joel Abrahamsson said he trained to capture the massive creature by reeling in 60-pound concrete blocks from a local lake. Then he strapped himself into a harness attached to his fishing rod in the kayak. He struggled with the greenland shark for around 90 minutes before finally capturing the 200-year old animal … which was estimated to weigh more than 1,200 pounds! It’s considered an unofficial record due to kayak fishing records being loosely kept … and the use of estimated weights. The ancient shark was later returned to the water. A fisherman in Cambodia got a big surprise when he inspected his gill net … A Siamese giant carp that weighed around 100 kilograms (220 lbs) was trapped there! Ironically, the fisherman said he had set his nets in a more shallow area of Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake (tone-lee sap lake), where smaller fish are usually found. Strong currents were thought to have swept the big fish into the shallow area. After noticing a huge tear in the netting, the fishermen alerted authorities to inspect the massive fish. The carp was later released into a deeper area of the lake. Did you know the Siamese giant carp is considered to be a rare and critically endangered species? Did you know that fishermen in northern Thailand caught a fish that was the size of a grizzly bear? It happened in 2005, and the creature measured almost 9 feet long (2.7 meters) and tipped the scales at 646 pounds (293 kilograms)! The species is understandably known as the Mekong (meh-kong) giant catfish … and you can get an idea of just how massive this creature is in these photos by Suthep Kritsanavarin (Soo-threp Krit-zana-var-en). It seems to dwarf the two men who have spread their arms across the creature’s dorsal area … likely to give the viewer a better sense of scale. The fishermen struggled with the beast for nearly an hour before hauling it in. Eggs were harvested from the fish by Thai Fisheries officials as part of a breeding program … and they later planned to release it. But the huge fish was instead sold to local villages as food after it died in captivity. Did you know this animal is recognized as one of the largest freshwater fish ever caught? A pensioner created some controversy when he landed the largest fish ever caught in the British Isles using rod and line. Joe Waldis managed to reel in a bluntnose sixgill shark that measured 12 feet, 9 inches long … and weighed 1,056 pounds! The animal was too huge to haul it aboard Mr Waldis’s boat off the coast of South-West Ireland. It was eventually towed to an estuary (ess-choo-wary), where it was taken by a forklift and weighed at a local quarry. The controversy arose when the shark was killed and then hauled ashore … that action was deemed necessary in order to verify the record. Many conservationists in the fishing community condemned the killing … saying the creature should have been released back to the sea alive. What do you think? An angler named Guy Kitakoa (kitta-koe-a) was fishing off Kona, Hawaii in 2015 … when he caught a blue marlin that weighed an incredible 1,368 pounds (or over 620 kilograms)! You can see the huge fish in Mr Kitakoa’s picture. Look at how it dwarfs the fisherman … you can get a good idea of the sheer mass of the shiny-skinned critter, as its right fin appears to be sticking straight up. It took some 90 minutes of struggling with the marlin to finally bring it in. It later took seven men to transfer the fish from the 20-foot skiff to a larger yacht. In pictures from Waiopai (why-o-pie) Sportfishing Charters, you can see how five of the men used yellow measuring tape to assess the marlin’s dimensions of 12-feet long with a girth of 84 inches. Additional photos from the same source depict the animal with its bill closed with duct tape as some of the men examine its tail fin. And it later took a flatbed pickup truck to transport the creature away from the docks … just look at how the massive marlin fills up the flatbed. Experts said it was the largest blue marlin caught off Kona in more than two Subscribe to Epic Wildlife http://goo.gl/6rzs5u Let's Connect -- http://www.epicadamwildlife.com/ -- http://www.facebook.com/epicadamwildlife -- http://www.twitter.com/epicwildlife -- http://gplus.to/epicwildlife

Puffer Fish Creates This Blue Water Art  ~: }

03:13
"This video is for educational purposes" !Quick example of the beauty we can find in those BBC-Earth new documentaries. The amazing little puffer fish capable of creating elaborately designed 'crop circles' at the bottom of the ocean as part of an elaborate mating ritual. The behavior was first documented by a photographer named Yoji Ookata who later returned with a film crew from the Japanese nature show NHK which later aired an episode about the fish. Even as articles bounced around the web it was still difficult to imagine how a tiny fish could create such a large design in the sand, even when staring directly at photographic evidence. Finally, video has emerged that shows just how the little guy delicately traverses the sand in a rotating criss-cross pattern to create a sort of subaquatic spirograph. The textured sand sculpture not only attracts mates but also serves as protection when the fish pair and lays eggs.

10 MOST DANGEROUS OCEAN CREATURES IN THE WORLD

10:17
10 Most Dangerous Water Animals In The World ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/vHN6qB For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] There are many different types of creatures that live in streams, lakes, seas and oceans. And while many of these creatures are harmless, there are many that are incredibly dangerous if you happen to have an encounter with them. These dangerous animals lurk beneath the surface of the water in a world vastly different than ours, and must be deadly to survive. Join us as we take a look at 10 of the most dangerous water creatures. 10. Australian Box Jellyfish – This creature is not one to be messed around with if you happen to swim into a swarm of them. And while they may seem harmless, the Australian box jellyfish is considered to be the most venomous marine animal in the world. They have tentacles that are covered with tiny darts called nematocysts, and they are loaded with poison. 9. Flower Urchin – Beautiful but deadly, these sea urchins are extremely venomous. They look like a bouquet of small flowers; to which they get their name from. They feed on invertebrates, sponges, and dead fish, and have well developed jaws for grinding up their prey. 8. The Saltwater Crocodile – Evolving around 200 million years in the Mesozoic epoch, crocodiles have far outlived the dinosaurs. The Salt water crocodile is the world’s largest reptile, and they have been known to grow up to 27 feet long and weigh 2,465 lbs. 7. Textile Cone Snail – Mother nature teaches us that anything in nature that is beautiful, is most likely deadly, and a warning to predators and humans to not touch or disturb them. This holds true for the Textile Cone Snail. 6. The Sea Snake – These highly venomous marine snakes are closely related and belong to the same family as the cobra. There are two independently evolved groups: the true sea snakes which are related to Australian terrestrial elapids, and the sea kraits which are related to Asian cobras. 5. The Lionfish – Lionfish are skilled hunters, using specialized bilateral swim bladder muscles to provide exquisite control of location in the water column, allowing the fish to alter its center of gravity to better attack prey. The lionfish then spreads its large pectoral fins and swallows its prey in a single motion. 4. The Stingray – Stingrays are a group of rays, which are cartilaginous fish related to sharks, and are one of the oceans deadliest creatures. Most stingrays have one or more barbed stingers on their tails, which are used exclusively for self-defense. 3. Blue-Ringed Octopus – This octopus has some of the most striking colors of any ocean creature. They get their name from the brightly blue colored rings on its body. 2. Needlefish – These strange looking creatures are very slender, and have a single dorsal fin, placed far back on the body. Needlefish are capable of making short jumps out of the water at up to 37 mph. Since Needlefish swim near the surface, they often leap over the decks of shallow boats rather than going around. 1. The Moray Eel - Most attacks stem from disruption of a moray's burrow to which they react strongly, but an increasing number of accidents also occur during hand feeding of morays by divers, an activity often used by dive companies to attract tourists.

Top 10 Most Dangerous Fish In the World | You've ever seen before

04:53
10. Electric Eel You must have heard about them in your science class when in school and many of you had been wondering about their existence. Well, here you go they actually exist and not only exist but, true to their name, they exhibit powerful electric shock; nature has gifted the respective creature with the ability for its survival. As per the resources, the electric eel produces up to 600 volts of electric current, which is enough to kill a man or any other living being. 9. Tiger Fish Apparent from its name, Tiger Fish is one of the most dangerous predator fishes with razor sharp teeth and ability of a true fighter and hunter. The fish is commonly found in the Congo River and Lake Tanganiyaka, situated in Africa; the tiger fish attacks in packs and feasts on large animals. Two of the most widely known tiger fishes are the goliath tiger fish and the tiger fish both of which are the largest among their specie. 8. Goonch Fish Goonch fish is found in the Kali River running between India and Nepal; the fish is a member of catfish family with dangerously sharp teeth and over seven feet long structure. What makes Goonch fish even more dangerous and horrific is its awareness of the taste of human flesh. The alarming number of disappearances and drowning in the Kali River is attributed to this giant man-eater. 7. The Stonefish The Stonefish is not only one of the most dangerous fish but it is also one of the weirdest sea creatures; Stonefish is an unnoticeable fish as it resembles the surface of a stone and could not be recognised unless you have stepped on it. Stonefish is known to be the most poisonous fish on the living earth, the pain caused by its sting is incurable and the victim has to suffer for hours. There is a slight discrepancy in the belief that whether or whether not a Stonefish kills though some believe that its only the pain while others argue that it’s poison can kill within two hours. 6. The Snakehead Fish The Snakehead fish is the original inhabitant of China, Russia and Korea while it can find its way to other countries and their ecosystems too. Once it finds its way to any lake or pond, it eats up all the living beings in the water, after ‘cleaning’ the water, it gets out to the land and eats whatever comes its way until it reaches another water reservoir. 5. Vandellia Cirrhosa The fish is the true and exact embodiment of the notion ‘Size doesn’t matter’, the fish is about 2.5 cm long and 3.5 mm wide and is also known as ‘the toothpick fish’. The fish causes relatively huge, and we really mean huge, calamity to man; Vandellia is attracted to blood and urine as it extracts its main source of food from it, which is urea. The fish easily passes through anus, vagina or penis and starts sucking blood causing extreme pain to the victim. In many cases amputation is the only remedy to it, which is even more horrifying. 4. Piranha Remember the movie named Piranha having small fishes attacking the beachers? Yes we are talking about the same fish; Piranha’s origination is in South America and Brazil. Similar to Vandellia Cirrhosa, Piranha is small in size with greater extent of danger, it is known for its noxious bite force as it bites its prey to bones in no time. 3. Pufferfish Pufferfish is ranked amongst the topmost poisonous fish found till the present date; the fish has poison reservoir of tetrodotoxin in its liver, ovaries, intestines and skin. The tetrodotoxin poison affects the brain and may cause weakness, paralysis and death even at a minimum consumption of the poison, which makes it a highly dangerous fish. 2. Box Jellyfish Box Jellyfish is different in a number of ways than their other family members as they have more developed nervous system and has real pair of eyes. It has long flagella and deadly poison, according to resources the Box Jellyfish poison can cause death within few minutes while the marks left by its sting is for eternity. Its poison attacks the cardiac activity as the victim experiences extremely low heart rate. 1. Payara – The Most Dangerous Fish Payara is also known as the ‘vampire fish’ and are even more dangerous and vicious predators than the Piranhas. It may grow up to four feet and are absolutely capable of preying fishes nearly of their own size. Apart from having sharp teeth and two front outer tusks, Payara is the only fish that is capable of devouring Piranhas, which marks their deadliness higher than Piranhas.

Half-human Half-fish MERMAID Washed Up On A Beach In Hawaii

04:04
For years now, there have been reported sightings of mermaid-like creatures in Kilauea Falls, Hawaii. But without proof, these eyewitness reports and stories have been dismissed as old wives’ tales and tourism lures. Much like is said about the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland. But these stunning photographs below could well dispel that. They appear to show the body of one of the mysterious half-human/half-fish creatures, washed up on the beach. There’s been no official explanation of the appearance from any Hawaiian authorities, although eyewitness testimonials say that governments officials and scientists were quick on the scene to remove the body. Until now, evidence of aquatic humanoids have been confined to grainy photographs and unclear video footage. But this as yet unidentified creature could well prove to be our finest proof that these famed beings exist. You can clearly see the distinguishing upper body features are that of a human female. And lower down, the bottom half is undoubtedly the kind of body one would expect to find on a sea animal, specifically a fish. The body was only recently discovered and is thought to be currently undergoing tests to determine its origin and potential authenticity at The University of Hawaii’s Institute of Marine Biology in Kaneohe. A thorough examination of the animal should prove conclusive and could, potentially, change the way we look at nature. Sightings of mermaids – and mermen – date back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Famed explorers such as Christopher Columbus and Captain John Smith (of Pocahontas fame) wrote of their experiences with them whilst exploring the ocean. Smith saw ‘a big-eyed, green-haired mermaid in 1614 off the coast of Newfoundland’ and even claimed to feel ‘love’ for her. that was until he realized that she was in fact a fish from the waist down… Earlier sightings of mermaids on the site where the corpse was washed up have stimulated debate about the potential existence of such things. Here’s what appears to be a mermaid on a rock, just a few hundred metres from where this latest being was found. In 2012, The United States National Ocean Service declared officially that ‘no evidence of mermaids has ever been found’. Might this latest discovery change all that? Maybe. Maybe not. The skeletal remains of what appeared to be a mermaid washed up on a beach in Egypt in 1997 (see below). Tests proved inconclusive, but scientists couldn’t rule out the possibility that what was found was mermaid in origin. Many at the time said that authorities were quick to dismiss the notion without conducting enough in-depth tests. Could it really be a mermaid? Is there another explanation? We look forward to finding out when the lab results come back…

Weird and Creepy Creatures People Found In The Deep Sea

11:26
Weird and Creepy Creatures People Found In The Deep Sea Roman Fedortsov spends most of his time on fishing trawlers. Some of his catches, however, end up going viral on the internet instead of being quietly digested in someone's tummy. "I'm 39 and have been working onboard trawlers for seventeen years," Roman told Bored Panda. "I live in Murmansk, Russia. It is a big port, and that's why I enrolled in the Marine University after school. My specialization has a lot to do with fishing technology. I know how to prepare fish for freezing and further delivery to the customer." Roman brought most of these photos from the Norwegian and Barents seas while some of them came ashore from the Atlantic Ocean. Once on a fishing trip, Roman and his mates live in six-hour cycles. They work for six hours, then rest for another six. And repeat. "We are to catch commercial fish such as Cod, Haddock, Halibut, Redfish, Herring, Mackerel, and so on," he added. "The most extreme fish I have ever caught are Frilled Shark, Rabbitfish, Big Sunfish, Angler, Stoplight Loosejaw..." "During my watch, I work at the fish factory. I'm responsible for processing the fish, so I have to control other seamen while they're working, too." Roman really likes finding unusual types of animals aboard the trawl. "I decided to create social media accounts because many people have no idea how some of the fish look. I'm constantly impressed by the appearance of some deep water fish and want to share my experiences with other people." "I have never been scared of the fish I catch," he said. "I'm always interested and impressed. How to feed & film freshwater eel underwater in wild. Fish camera. Угорь подводой.

Dear Friends, thank you for visiting my channel and for watching this video. All my underwater films and videos were recorded entirely on location in Ireland while free-diving and snorkelling. I'm working entirely alone investing my own money and time which as you can understand limits me very much. Last year I practically had to stop filming and developing my 'Underwater Ireland' project because I had financial difficulties and couldn't afford to spend money or time anymore. To raise some funds for my project development I inserted a PayPal 'Donate' button on my website -- http://www.underwater-ireland.com/sponsors.htm You do not need to be rich and you do not need to have a PayPal account -- all that you need is a desire to help this very unique project to survive and to develop and you need to have a debit or credit card (all transactions are absolutely secure because they go through PayPal). I appreciate ANY! help and even one euro/dollar/pound/etc. can make a real difference. If you provide your name and postal address to contact [at] underwater-ireland.com after the donation I will be happy to send you a small present (my postcards, my DVD or a large photo-print, size up to 30x40cm depending on the amount of the donation). If you can't donate anything -- you can still help by sharing this information and the link to my video channel - http://www.youtube.com/user/underwaterireland and to my website - http://www.underwater-ireland.com Don't forget to come back later -- I hope I'll find an opportunity to show you even more exciting episodes about the underwater world of Ireland. Faithfully yours Victor Kutischev Think Green --Think Ireland! www.underwater-ireland.com Recorded in Ireland in the begginning of June 2010.

These Fish Are All About Sex on the Beach | Deep Look

During the highest tides, California grunion stampede out of the ocean to mate on the beach. When the party's over, thousands of tiny eggs are left stranded up in the sand. How will their lost babies make it back to the sea? SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! http://goo.gl/8NwXqt DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. * NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! * With summer just around the corner, Southern California beaches are ready to welcome the yearly arrival of some very unique and amorous guests. That’s right, the grunion are running! California grunion are fish that spend their lives in the ocean. But when the tides are at their highest during spring and summer, grunion make a trip up onto beaches to mate and lay eggs. Grunion mate on beaches throughout southern California and down into into Mexico. The grunion runs have taken on a special importance to coastal communities Santa Barbara to San Diego. For some, coming out to see the grunion run has been an annual tradition for generations. For others it’s a rare chance to catch ocean fish with their bare hands. --- What are grunion? California grunion are schooling fish similar to sardines that live in the Pacific Ocean that emerge from the sea to lay their eggs on the sand of beaches in Southern California and down the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. There are also smaller populations in Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay. Another species, the Gulf Grunion lays their eggs in the northern shores of the Gulf of California. California Grunion are typically about six inches in length. --- Why do grunion mate on land? The ocean is full of predators who would like to gobble up a tasty fish egg. The grunion eggs tend to be safer up on the beach if they can make it there without raising the attention of predators like birds and raccoons. Grunion eggs have a tough outer layer that keeps them from drying out or being crushed by the sand. --- When do California grunion run? California grunion typically spawn from March to August. The fishing season is closed during the peak spawning times during May and June.
