Jesus Calls the First Disciples 1On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." 5And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." 6And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." 9For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." 11And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

Jesus challenged Peter and Andrew to go from being ordinary fishermen to extraordinary fishers of men. The question is— Do you want to continue walking in your own path and be ordinary? Or follow Jesus and become extraordinary? The choice is yours!

We asked kids to tell us the story of Jesus calling His Apostles to be “fishers of men” in their own words. In this story, some of Jesus’s Apostles were fishermen before they met Him. One day, Jesus came to them and said He could make them fishers of men. They left everything and followed Him. They spent their days inviting people to listen to Jesus and follow Him too. If you serve and teach others like Jesus and His Apostles did, you can be a fisher of men too. In this story, some of Jesus’s Apostles were fishermen before they met him. A powerful sermon, from the man of God. The Word of God, will not return VOID. There is not a doubt in my mind that the internet has helped fulfill parts of the Bible. With that in mind; "Who ever listens to the Word of God, from a man of God, will be held accountable, at the day of judgment." Holy Ghost filled men of God, are hard to find in our country, but God always has a REMNANT. Praise God. Shalom. Maranatha. Brother Mike.

Douglas talks about how evangelism is a little bit like being a fisherman. Douglas likes to go fishing with his grandpa, but one day his grandpa asked him a confusing question, "Do you want to fish for people?" When Douglas goes fishing with his grandpa they go out on a little lake and they have fake little fish with hooks on them called "lures" and they throw the lure in the lake on the end of their fishing lines and they reel them in and try to make the lure look alive. If a fish thinks it's alive then they might bite on to the hook and then they pull the fish out of the water and take it home and cook it and eat it. So the idea of fishing for people seemed pretty crazy, and maybe a little bit scary, to Douglas. But his Grandpa explained that many of Jesus' disciples were fishermen, and Jesus asked them to become fishers of men. His disciples didn't fish like we do. Every day they would get in their boats to go catch fish (Douglas only gets to fish with his grandpa maybe twice a month) and they would fish with nets instead of lures and hooks. This was their job, if they didn't catch fish they didn't eat. when they would throw their nets out, some fish would swim around them but some would stay in the nets and then they would pull them up into the boat. Jesus wanted his disciples to share the Gospel with people the same way they would go fishing. And that's what Jesus wants us to do as well. Just like fishermen would throw their nets out every day, we should be spreading the Good News of Jesus with everyone we meet. With both our words and our action we should show God's love to everyone and shine as lights in this dark world every day. And just like a fisherman never catches all the fish that swim by him net, not everyone will believe us or put their trust in God. And that's ok, we can keep spreading God's love and the Good News of Jesus every day. Bible Verses About Evangelism for Kids: Matthew 4:18-22 | Fishers of Men Mark 16:15 | "Go into all the world..." As we celebrate Seacoast's 30th year, Pastor Josh Surratt reflects on one of our founding principles, and how it relates to one of the stranger things Jesus said to his disciples: "Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men." For message notes and small group questions go to http://www.seacoast.org/seacoast-go/recent-series/jesus-said/. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” Mark 1:17 (ESV) Jesus said to His followers, “Go everywhere in the world, and tell the Good News to everyone.” Mark 16:15 (NCV) LEARNING TO FISH 1. BECOME AWARE Key Question: What is my part in this person’s journey to Christ? My work was to plant the seed in your hearts, and Apollos’ work was to water it, but it was God, not we, who made the garden grow in your hearts. 1 Corinthians 3:6 (LB) 2. BE IN PRAYER Pray that the Father would draw them to Jesus (John 6:44). Pray against the spirit that blinds their minds (2 Corinthians 4:4). Pray that they come to know God relationally (Romans 8:15). Pray that believers will cross their paths and enter into positive relationships with them (Matthew 9:38). Pray for a revelation of who Jesus is and what He has done for them (Ephesians 1:17). 3. SHOW THEM YOU CARE Key Question: What comes to mind when you think about the person who was most responsible for you coming to know Christ? But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:8 (NLT) 4. BE WILLING TO SHARE Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 1 Peter 3:15 (NIV) The most important thing is that I complete my mission, the work that the Lord Jesus gave me – to tell people the Good News about God’s grace. Acts 20:24 (NCV)

Jesus' call to follow Him actually contains two parts, though we often overlook the second one. What does it mean to be a disciple of Christ? (Mark 1.16-20, November 3, 2013)
