All my life I've been the skinny guy. I've tried to gain muscle so many times you wouldn't believe it. I tried eating healthy and going to the gym. At some point I just stopped and accepted that my body was just not made for it. Now I know that no one is "made" for anything. Finally I was able to achieve my goals and become stronger than ever. The app helped me a lot as I didn't have a lot of experience learned the barbell movements with it through guided videos, my weights were increased automatically by its coach function and I was guided through every single workout. I couldn't have achieved what I did without it. ***UPDATE ON STARTING LIFTING NUMBERS*** I haven't actually done real 1RM tests in the beginning. These are just estimations based on the weights I trained with. I found a 1RM calculator online that said that it's pretty accurate up to 10 reps so I used its estimations. If I had known the technique better and if I had been able to push myself harder, I probably could have handled more weight but I was afraid to do the movements wrong and I found it kind of scary to use weights I am not sure I can handle - especially when it comes to bench press and squats. ***UPDATE ON NUTRITION*** I followed a very strict diet and without that, it would just not have been possible to change as drastically as I did. In general: I’m a pescetarian, that means, I don’t eat meat except for fish. I started with the Freeletics Nutrition Guide and applied the knowledge in a way that worked best for me. I will try to break it down to a few simple steps: 1) The key is finding what works best for you and then sticking to it: The first couple of weeks I only focussed on gaining weight as that has been my biggest struggle so far. High protein and high carb diet. Lot’s of fish and seafood. My calorie intake was up to about 4000kcal/day. After a while I realized that was too much as I was gaining fat as well and went down to a high protein moderate carb diet with a little more than 3000kcal which worked way better for me. My body developed the way I wanted it to and my performance went through the roof.. 2) No alcohol, no added sugar, no processed food at all. Real foods - that’s what is the basis for everyone. Don’t eat stuff you can’t pronounce. Just don’t do it. 3) It helps to track your calories and weigh your food. You need to know what you are eating as well as how much of it. It’s the same as for training: Doing the right exercises is the first step, programming it is the second. That's why the Freeletics Gym Coach worked for me. 4) Schedule your meals according to your day. Your body needs to be fueled with the right nutrients throughout the day and has special needs at certain times, i.e. I always ate a banana and drank a protein shake directly (15mins max) after training as the body needs carbs and proteins to regenerate and refuel. I also precooked my food for the whole day every morning. 5) Supplements: I took 5g of creatine and a protein shake right after each training. FLEX Magazine "Merges" With Muscle & Fitness
Another print magazine bites the dust. AMI has announced that the April 2018 issue of FLEX magazine will be the final one and it is "merging" with Muscle & Fitness, which is also published by AMI. M&F has morphed from a bodybuilding title years back to a mainstream fitness one that has more of a celebrity element to it; hardcore bodybuilding was not on the docket. So it remains to be seen just how this will work. Bodybuilding magazines have been shrinking in size and titles the past few years, so this only comes as a surprise because media giant AMI is one that can absorb a potential loss. This announcement shows that FLEX - which began as a spinoff of M&F in 1983 - has been a tough sell for ads and newsstand sales alike. http://www.musclesportmag.com

But don't let his nickname confuse you—this isn't CrossFit we'll be doing here. Instead, you're about to challenge yourself with a combination of beginner calisthenics and weighted isolation moves. See, you can't just start doing muscle-ups and acrobatics like Hawkins without nailing down the basics first. Bodyweight moves like pull-ups, leg lifts, and dips will be the first steps in getting you there. If you haven't quite mastered these, you can still tackle them with simple modifications. The road to Hawkins' level of training requires getting out of your comfort zone! At the end of the workout, Hawkins throws in some remarkable power-ups, hoisting himself up and into a handstand position on the pull-up bars. "I know I make it look easy, but that's only because I've been practicing for such a long time," he says. In other words, consistency and effort with workouts like this one is key. As much as we'd all love to pump some iron at this historical landmark of bodybuilding, all you'll need is a gym with the right equipment—and a mindset to push yourself with the more difficult bodyweight portions of the workout. Don't let Hawkins' quickness and fluidity intimidate you. He assures us that it doesn't have to be rushed or done perfectly; just do the work. "As long as you follow through, you're going to get a result," he explains. Maybe once you're as jacked and talented as Hawkins, you'll be high-fiving and taking photos with fans before you train, too. | Andrew Hawkins Full-Body Workout | 1. Pullups: 4-5 sets, 12-15 reps 2. Knee/Hip Raies On Parallel Bars: 4-5 sets, 12-15 reps 3. Dips: 4-5 sets, 12-15 reps 4. Standing Rope Crunch: 4-5 sets, 12-15 reps 5. Leg Extensions: 4-5 sets, 12-15 reps 6. Lying Leg Curls: 4-5 sets, 12-15 reps 7. Machine Bench Press: 4-5 sets, 12-15 reps 8. Machine Low Row: 4-5 sets, 12-15 reps 9. Barbell Curl: 4-5 sets, 12-15 reps 10. Triceps Pushdown: 4-5 sets, 12-15 reps | Pull-Up | Your grip on pull-ups can be underhand or overhand, wide or narrow. Regardless, your tempo should be moderate; neither too fast or too slow. Go straight up and down: Imagine you're trying to pull your elbows into your back pockets. Minimize any swinging or extra movement by keeping your abs tight and staying under control. As Hawkins notes, pull-ups are going to help you with overall calisthenics and grip strength. | Leg Lift | Leg lifts are best performed on an apparatus called the Roman chair. Keep your shoulders back, not rolled inward toward your chest. Engage your core and lift your legs up and out in front of you, as if you are pulling them solely with your lower abs. Your legs should remain straight as you bring them up to where your feet are even with your hips. This can be challenging, so a modified option would be with your knees bent and tucked into your chest. Either way, keep your lower back neutral the entire time. | Triceps Dip | This is another tough movement, but done correctly, it will leave your triceps sore for days! Begin with your hands gripping both sides of a dip bar, your arms straight, and your knees bent. Bend your elbows and keep them tucked as you descend. Once your elbows reach 90 degrees, use the strength of your triceps to push yourself back to the starting position. At this gym, unlike anywhere else in the world, athletes are onstage 365 days a year, many doing crazy stunts on the pull-up bars or tossing around weights to earn applause from bystanders. But on the flipside, the great physiques of Muscle Beach's past were forged through hard work, and hard workouts, on the simple machines and free weights along the boardwalk. And the best tribute you can give to bodybuilding history is to fearlessly step up and get under the bar yourself. That's the route that Gavin Matthews, a Muscle Beach Nutrition athlete, takes on his high-volume leg day. There's nothing exotic in this workout. It's all time-tested movements like the leg press, hack squat, lunge, and squat, in a classic pre-exhaust model. You won't need more than 45-50 minutes to knock the whole thing out if you keep the rest periods short, but it'll be the most intense 45 minutes of your week. Don't expect anyone to clap when you finish that last set of squats with a weight far below your max. But expect to feel like you've accomplished something, and like walking to the locker room is a serious challenge. | The Muscle Beach Leg Workout | 1. Leg Press: 4 sets, 20 reps 2. Hack Squat: 4 sets, 15 reps 3. Dumbbell Walking Lunge: 4 sets, 15 reps 4. Giant Set a. Stiff-Legged Dumbbell Deadlift: 4 sets, 10 reps b. Dumbbell Sumo Squat: 4 sets, 15 reps 5. Barbell Squats: 3 sets, to failure | Leg Press | "This is going to warm up all of our joints, our hips, our knees, going to get blood flow to the glutes, the hamstrings, and the quads," Matthews says. But don't just toss on a plate and go to town for 20 reps. Matthews has a very specific protocol in mind. Start by doing 5 reps with your feet wide on the platform and a slow, controlled pace of 3-second negatives and 3-second concentric contractions. Then, immediately move your feet to a neutral, hip-width stance and do another 5 reps focusing on 5-second negatives with explosive concentrics. Then, move your feet to the middle of the platform, in a narrow stance, and do the last 10 reps, focusing on keeping the muscle contracted the whole time. This is pure time under tension, so no locking out those knees! Add weight each set if you can, and rest for no more than a minute between sets. "Keep fighting through it and pump all that blood into that muscle," Matthews says. "That way, it'll warm you up for the next exercise." | Hack Squat | Unlike the leg press, where you were alternating tempos and stances, you'll just hit your reps here with perfect, identical form. "Keep a neutral to narrow stance, focusing more on pressing through the midline of our toes down to our heels, pushing all through our quads to pump them up," Matthews says. "Push through the ball of the foot. Keep the chest out and the back flat on the pad. Focus all your attention with the machine just on the muscle you're working." As they get fatigued, many lifters find they end up on their tippy-toes toward the end of their sets on the hack squat, but Matthews says to focus on staying flat-footed.
