APA Formatting for PowerPoint: How to Apply APA Style to PowerPoint Presentations

05:22
Guidelines for APA should also be applied to PowerPoint presentations when required. Any use of outside source material must be documented on the PowerPoint slide using APA citation formats from the 6th edition. Because PowerPoint slides are mainly a visual medium, the presenter must know how APA documents elements such as images, tables, graphs, and other media with titles, notes, and APA parenthetical citations. APA style and citation formats still apply to PowerPoint slides although the citations are being using in a different medium.

Citing a Book using APA Citation Style

03:34
This video covers the basics of how to create a reference list citation for a book using APA citation style. All entries in the reference list, including book citations, should have a ½” hanging indent. If you aren’t sure how to format a hanging indent, please refer to the handouts in the Alverno Library’s Citation Guide: http://libguides.alverno.edu/citingsources Begin the citation with the authors’ names. When the book has multiple authors, the last author is proceeded by an ampersand (&) – however different rules apply if there are more than 7 authors. Spell out the entire last name followed by the first and (if present) middle initial. Do not spell out the first or middle name and do not include the author’s credentials (such as PhD or MBA…). The next element of a book citation is the publication year. Use the most recent copyright date, enclosed in parentheses and followed by a period. The publication date is typically found on the book’s title page or the backside of the title page (also known as the verso). If you borrowed the book from the library, you will also find this information by looking the book up in your library’s online catalog. Next, provide the title of the book. Notice that the entire book title is in italics. Also, note the capitalization. For book titles, the only words that are capitalized are the first word of the title, first word of the subtitle, which typically follows a colon, and proper nouns – such as names of countries, organizations, and people. In this example the word “Qualitative” is capitalized because it is the first word of the subtitle. If the edition is other than the first, add a notation for the edition in parenthesis. Finally, a book citation will include information about the publisher. Start with the publisher’s location – list the city followed by the U. S. Postal Service abbreviation for the state. If more than one location is listed, use the first city listed or the city where the publisher's headquarters is located. If the publisher is outside of the United States, list the city and country. The publisher’s location is followed by a colon. The name of the publisher is the last element of the book citation. The name is given in as brief a form as possible and you will want to eliminate unnecessary words such as Publisher, Co. (for company), or Inc. (for incorporated). End the entire citation with a period and you are done.

Citing a Webpage using APA Citation Style

03:51
This video covers the basics of how to create a reference list citation for a webpage using APA citation style. All citations in the reference list should have a ½” hanging indent. If you aren’t sure how to format a hanging indent, please refer to the handouts in the Alverno Library’s Citation Guide which can be accessed through the library’s homepage. Begin the citation with the author’s name. When citing authors, spell out the last name, followed by the first and (if present) middle initial. And, do not spell out the first or middle name. Also, do not include the authors’ credentials. With webpages, it is very common not to have an author listed. If there is no author associated with the webpage, begin the citation with the title of the webpage. The next element in the citation is the date. Avoid simply using the copyright date of the website, instead use the date that the webpage was published, last updated, or revised. If multiple dates are provided, use the most recent date on which the content was changed. Sometimes the date is difficult to find, so you may need to really look for it. Because the web content changes frequently, it is recommended that you list the entire date if it’s provided. The format for the date in this example is correct. List the year, followed by the month, then day. The date is enclosed in parentheses and followed by a period. Do not provide the date that you accessed the webpage. If you are citing a webpage that does not provide a date, use n.d. to indicate no date. Next is the title, which is not italicized if the webpage that you are citing is part of a larger work. That’s consistent with the APA rule for formatting titles in a reference list. Titles of larger stand-alone works are italicized, but shorter works within are not. When websites consist of multiple webpages, the webpage is considered the smaller work within the website and is not italicized. The final element of a simple webpage citation is the URL, or Uniform Resource Locator. This is the web address of the page that you are citing. It’s important to always provide accurate and current URLs so your reader can easily locate your source. Copy and paste the URL directly from the browser’s address bar to ensure that the web address is correct. Notice that there is no mention of the parent website in this citation. That’s consistent with NoodleTools’ recommendation to only provide the name of the website as a whole if it is not clear from the URL. There is no period at the end of the URL and it is not hyperlinked.
