8 GREAT TIPS FOR SURVIVAL AT SEA

06:11
Most of us adore beach resorts and go to one of the large saltwater bodies at least once a year. However, we shouldn’t forget that the sea is as attractive as it is wayward. We at Bright Side wondered how a person who happened to be in the open sea should behave. It turns out there are several rules that aren’t at all difficult to remember. Despair is your most dangerous enemy. Don’t give up hope of being saved. There are many stories of people who were found in the open sea months after their disappearance. For instance, 25-year-old sailor Poon Lim, who worked on a British merchant ship, survived alone 133 days in the open sea. After a shipwreck, he managed to find a raft with fresh water, cookies, flares, and a flashlight. Every day, Lim ate only 2 cookies and made 3 sips of water. To avoid muscle atrophy, he even floated around the raft twice a day. As you can see, human possibilities are endless. The main thing is to keep calm and hope for the best. TIMESTAMPS Calm down 0:35 Choose the right swimming style 0:57 Find something that floats 1:37 Take care of clothes 1:55 Decide what you’ll eat 2:16 Provide yourself with liquid 3:01 Save yourself properly 4:02 Don’t lose hope 5:06 SUMMARY - Panic definitely won’t help you. It can cloud your judgment and make you lose the rhythm of breathing. Therefore, the first thing you should do is to calm down. - The style of swimming you choose determines how long your strength will last. In calm water, it’s better to swim on your back. If waves splash around you, it’s better to swim on your belly. - If you’re in the open sea as a result of a shipwreck or an airplane water landing, there must be plenty of things around you that perfectly keep afloat. It will be even better if it’s a boat or a raft with which ships are equipped. - Remember that open sunlight can be extremely dangerous. So don’t remove your clothes — they’ll protect you from the sun. - If you have rations, divide them into small daily portions. This will make them last for a long time, and you won’t have problems with digestion. - Try to fish even if you have stores of food. After all, fish contain some liquid. - You have to consume the liquid constantly but never drink seawater. - Try to ensure that you always have a couple of empty containers left for collecting rainwater. According to studies, drinking untreated rainwater is safe for your health. - • If you found fluorescein, dissolve it in the water when you see an airplane or ship. It forms a bright spot around you which can be easily seen from the air and from afar. How to Survive at Sea and Different Natural Disasters

10:13
How to Survive Natural Disasters. No one in the world is 100% safe from natural disasters, and you should know exactly how to save your own life and help others in case you find yourself in a critical situation. Pay attention to the right course of action that will help you to survive and assist those around you. Here are some recommendations about what to do and what not to do in critical situations. How to survive an earthquake 2:11 If an earthquake finds you inside, fall to the floor and use anything nearby that is sturdy and strong: a desk, a bed, or a table as a cover. If there's nothing nearby, crouch in an inside corner of the building. Protect your head with your arms. DO NOT go outside. You’re safer inside the building. DO NOT hide under doorways. It’s not safe. Stay inside until you feel the shaking stop. If you are outdoors, stay clear of buildings, utility wires, streetlights, and other objects that may fall. If you're driving, stop the car immediately, but don't leave it. If you are trapped under debris, don't panic, and don't try to get out on your own. Wait for help. How to survive a tornado 5:28 If you're inside when tornado hits, immediately stop whatever you are doing. Find a shelter. If you can't reach an underground shelter, go down to the basement. If you can't get underground, find a room without windows. It should be the closest to the center of the house and on the lowest floor available. Wherever you are, lie down or crouch on the ground with your face turned down. Cover your head with your arms. How to survive a tsunami 7:34 The first thing you need to do in case of tsunami is move as far away from the shore as possible. Find higher ground. It's best if you can get as high up as 100 ft above sea level. If you live in an area that can be affected by a tsunami, plan an evacuation route. This will help you in a critical situation. How to survive a hurricane 8:20 When you hear an announcement about an approaching hurricane, follow the instructions from the authorities. When the hurricane approaches, stay clear of glass doors and windows. Whatever the reason, DO NOT go outside. Even if you think that the hurricane has passed, stay inside until the authorities confirm that it's safe to leave buildings. After the hurricane is over, DO NOT drink tap water. It may be contaminated with bacteria. TIMESTAMPS Rip current 0:52 Earthquake 2:11 Tornado 5:28 Tsunami 7:34 Hurricane 8:20 SUMMARY -Your primary goal is to get back to calm waters. You should NOT try to swim against a rip current. Try to stay calm and persuade yourself that you have the situation under control. -If you’re inside, fall to the floor and find cover. Stay away from windows, glass objects, outside walls and doors. If an earthquake gets you outside, stay clear of buildings, utility wires, streetlights, and other objects that may fall. -When a tornado hits, find a shelter immediately. If you can't get underground, find a room without windows. If you're driving when you hear a tornado warning, try to get to the nearest building as quickly as you can. -In case of tsunami, move as far away from the shore as possible. Find higher ground. Don’t use tall buildings and high trees to seek shelter from a tsunami. -As soon as you hear a hurricane warning, fill all containers in your home (including bathtubs) with water. When the hurricane approaches, stay clear of glass doors and windows. If you look at the statistics, you might feel terrified. - Sharks cause just six deaths a year - their infamous reputation is very exaggerated. - Wolves are responsible for ten deaths annually. - Lions kill 22 people a year. - Now get ready: elephants, cute lovely giants, are the reason that more than 500 people lose their lives every year! - Hippopotamuses equal them in this scary competition. - Crocodiles turn out to be much more dangerous than sharks: about one thousand deaths a year. - But the champion here is the snake: 100,000 people meet their end at the teeth of this reptile. We hope you will never have to escape from a rhinoceros, swim away from a crocodile, or meet a hungry lion. However, now you will be able to protect yourself in the wilderness. 7 Ways to Survive Natural Disasters

09:35
How to Survive Natural Disasters. Here’s a list of survival tips that can save your life in an emergency. We live in a time when natural disasters occur more and more often and get more and more devastating. Many of us believe we should blame the human race for that. Whether it’s true or not, we all want to know how to survive when those disasters happen. Some rules are universal for most natural disasters. A national campaign called Ready was started in the United States to inform the population about how to get ready for and survive in different emergency situations. It recommends having a basic survival kit to provide you with the most important things just in case. Remember you will need to have enough food, water, and other supplies for at least 72 hours after the disaster. “Other supplies” include a battery powered weather radio, flashlight, first aid kit, a whistle, a dust mask, personal sanitation items (such as moist towelettes), pliers, can opener for food, maps of your area and an emergency cell phone with backup batteries. TIMESTAMPS Hurricane 0:40 Tornado 1:45 Tsunami 3:15 Flood 4:10 Avalanche 5:03 Wildfire 6:00 Earthquake 7:00 SUMMARY - If a hurricane starts while you are driving, leave your vehicle and find a building to shelter in, or a ditch. Stopping in an overpass will not save you. If your home is a trailer and there is enough time to flee to a safe area – do it. - If a tornado starts when you are in a public building, follow the same rules. You want to stay as low as possible. Avoid windows and open spaces such as auditoriums, gyms, and large hallways. Desks and benches can give you some extra protection if you get under them. It is impossible to outrun a tornado. - Tsunamis are so fast they hit the coast minutes after the earthquake. Remember that tall buildings, including hotels right in the beach area, can provide an excellent shelter. In case a tsunami finds you at sea, stay there instead of going back to the coast. It won’t be a safe haven. - Don’t try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house once you hear the evacuation warning. Leave for safety in higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container. If a flash flood gives you no time to evacuate and the water is all around you, don’t try to swim across it. - When an avalanche starts, try to move to the side of the slope as fast as you can. There will be more snow in the center of the flow. To move faster, drop any heavy equipment you have on you. If you can’t escape it, try using a sturdy tree to keep you above the snow. - If you find yourself in a wildfire area, it is critically important to ensure that you can breathe. If you fail to do it, you can pass out in the midst of a danger zone. Use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth and escape to safety. - If an earthquake starts when you are inside, stay where you were. Experts say that during an earthquake you must drop to the floor, get underneath a table, cover your neck and head with one hand, and hold on with the other hand. Your entire body must be under the table. Don’t try to run out of the building - the exterior of a building is one of the most dangerous places. 10 Tips to Survive Dangerous Sea Situations

07:45
Can open water swimming be dangerous? How to stay safe in a river, lake, sea, or ocean? An innocent-looking water dam that acts as a death trap, an invisible water current that pushes you into the sea, and a powerful wave that breaks on the shore. It should all be fun in the sun, but there are some real dangers lurking in the water when you’re out swimming… If the current gets you, you’ll need to swim around it to escape. The key is to do something counterintuitive: you'll need to swim down instead of up. Swim toward the dam, then curl up and swim downward. Swim far enough down that you aren’t trapped by the current. Then while you’re still underwater, swim away from the current, which should be above you at this point. It’s only safe to come up to the surface once you’ve put enough distance between you and the current. TIMESTAMPS: Beware of sun exposure 0:37 Be very careful with inflatables 1:11 Don’t underestimate a river current 1:40 Sail safely 2:12 Beware of the risk of picking up illnesses in rivers and lakes 2:36 Know how to respond to a shark attack 3:16 Check the weather report 3:55 Be aware of the strength of the waves 4:29 Be mindful of rip currents 5:14 Don’t go near a low-head water dam 6:05 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Just a few hours of direct sun can lead to some very unpleasant symptoms like dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. - The wind can push inflatables very easily, and that’s how people have been carried away deep into the sea. - Because some rivers aren’t so deep, they might give a false sense of security. However, they can have a fast undercurrent. - The most important step is to have life jackets onboard that fit the passengers. If you can, wear a life jacket for the entire trip. - Some algae can have harmful and toxic effects if touched or if you accidentally drink water containing algae. It can lead to eye and ear irritation. - Sharks are most active at dusk, dawn, and night. They also have a powerful sense of smell, so avoid going into the water if you have an open wound. - If you’re standing on the beach, you’ll be the tallest thing for miles. Therefore, there’s a high chance that lightning could strike you. - Some waves break at sea, and they’re rolling gently by the time they reach the shore. But other waves break right at the shore — where all beach-goers tend to be. - A rip current is a powerful current of water that moves from the shore into the sea. The main issue is that you can’t spot a rip current with your eyes. - If you like to bathe in streams or small rivers, they could have a low-head dam. To give you an idea of how dangerous they are, low-head dams are also called “drowning machines.” Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brightside/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightgram/ 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

6 Ways to Survive Wild Animal Attacks

08:07
How to survive wild animal attacks? How should you react if confronted by an angry wolf? Before you head out for a hike or to the sea, keep watching to learn how to react to these 6 dangerous animals — and make sure you live to tell the tale! ☝️ If the bear has noticed you, do not make direct eye contact. Simply begin to walk away. If the bear starts to approach you, stand your ground, wave your arms, and speak loudly enough that the bear can hear you. If a bison charges at you, run for cover as quickly as you can. They might look a little slow because they’re so heavy, but they will catch up with you if you don’t hurry. Find cover behind a large boulder or another large object. A shark might attack if he thinks he has to compete with you for food or thinks you’re a big fish. If the situation escalates and it begins to attack you, try to punch some of the shark’s sensitive spots. The nose is a good target, but doing this can leave your hand too close to the shark’s mouth. TIMESTAMPS: Grizzly bear 0:41 Bison 1:51 Shark 3:00 Mountain lion 4:05 Crocodile 5:13 Wolf 6:24 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - If you’re out in the middle of a forest and encounter a grizzly bear, do not try to outrun it. Bears can charge at up to 40 mph. - If a bison charges at you, run for cover as quickly as you can. They might look a little slow because they’re so heavy, but they will catch up with you if you don’t hurry. - If the shark is close to you but appears to be just passing by, curl yourself up into a ball as best you can, and keep your splashing to a minimum. If it’s circling you, don’t turn your back on it, and maintain eye contact. - If you are alone and you encounter a mountain lion on your trail, you need to channel your inner hunter. The mountain lion will assess if you are prey. - If you’re in the water and a crocodile bites you, you need to fight with all your effort. Crocodiles have the strongest bite of any animal currently living, and they’re rivaled only by the great white shark. - You need to show the wolf that you are not an easy target. Shout loudly, and become aggressive. The wolf might still keep you in sight, but he might back off just enough for you to make your escape. Lost at sea for months. Could You Survive This?

04:52
Get life-saving tweets now - twitter.com/DoomsdayPrepp4r How to stay alive in dangerous waters. Stranded at sea survival tips. Lost at sea for 66 days. We're kicking off "Gma survival week" with a harrowing situation. What do you do if you're stranded at sea, there's in dangerous waters? Matt Gutman knows. He's here to share it with us. Reporter: Good morning. For this installment, we traveled deep into Mexico to learn the life-saving survival skills in the sea of Cortez. "Gma" dropping me off in the deep end where I learned one useful skill. All of this inspired by the people who survived the real thing. Survivor is on the vessel. Reporter: Louis Jordan rescued after being lost at sea for 66 days. A former football player thrown from his 36-foot fishing boat without a life preserver. I realized I was in real trouble. Reporter: Rob Conrad forced to swim 27 miles over 16 hours. Miraculously, he survived. And Seattle siblings Dan and Kate suskey on a charter fishing trip off the coast of St. Lucia when their boat capsized. It's surreal. Reporter: They swam for 14 hours in shark-infested water. We could see land off in the distance and started swimming that direction. Reporter: Basic skills that they applied helped them survive. I wanted to find out if there were in, so here I am. Drifting away in the shark-infested sea of Cortez in Mexico. Not exactly sure how I'll get out of this mess, but I do know exactly how I got into it. ? earlier that morning, in Mexico, I boarded a chopper for a 45-minute flight over the desert to a village. It's here I meet up with Dan Baird, head up instructor for the California vur vooifl school. How hard could it be to jump out of a helicopter? It's missing its doors. Why would anyone jump out with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the shoes on their feet? The plan is for Dan to teach me how the survive being lost at sea. I'm way too tear field to have final words. As the chopper reaches the drop location, the devil's mouth, Dan and I take our positions. And on the count of three. Whoo! That was awesome. It's a plunge into 70-degree water. As the rush subsides and I acclimate to the temperature, reality sets in. If our shoes are impeding our swimming, we want to relax and get them off. Reporter: The first thing Dan tells me to do is sake of my shoes and tie them around my neck. They're not conducive to treading water. We may be here for awhile. We maintain breathing. Slow it down. Slow down the heart rate. Figure out how to maintain a float. Reporter: And we do that by -- I just took my pants off. I didn't think I would do that on TV ever. Is there tie them tight. Reporter: It's a skill that takes some practice. By filling the wlegs air, I've turned my pants into a life preserver. As for avoiding sharks, as experts told us last year, don't thrash around. You look like food. If you're with another person, link arms back to back and fight them off with your legs. If you don't see land, what do you do? Just stay calm and conserve energy. Dan says your number one enemy is panic. If I didn't have a float like a set of pants, another option would be the dead man's float. Fill our lungs with air, put yourself face down. Float. Until you feel like you need to take another breath. Reporter: A plunge in the air I won't soon forget. Whoo! All to help you survive the unthinkable. Give yourself little tasks. Focus on keeping afloat. Use your watch to reflect sun flight you see a boat nearby. If you can't see land, don't try to swim. Above all, keep your pants on. Please do. Reporter: Always. Good advice. It's remarkable how good a pair of papts can be as a flotation device. Of course, if you really want to survive, don't jump out of a helicopter. That was George's takeaway.

Floating is better than swimming for sea survival, says RNLI

01:39
New figures released today show 162 people lost their lives on UK coasts in the last year, with adult men accounting for 74% of deaths and 77% over the past five years. • Only 3% of Brits know how to react if they unexpectedly fall into cold water • 40% would follow a potentially life-threatening instinct of immediately trying to swim • Coastal fatality figures released today show that 162 people lost their lives on UK coasts in 2016 We’re told to trust our instincts but today the RNLI is calling on the public to fight their instincts should they get into trouble in UK waters and, instead, remember one simple skill – floating. Sudden immersion in water any temperature below 15C puts people at severe risk of cold water shock. This triggers the instinctive but life-threatening reaction to gasp uncontrollably, thrash about and try to swim hard. This reaction is the worst thing to do and can quickly lead to drowning as it increases the chance of water entering the lungs, increases strain on the heart, cools the skin and reduces buoyancy by letting air escape from clothing. The RNLI’s advice is to float for around 60-to-90 seconds – the time it takes for the effects of the cold shock to pass and for you to regain control of your breathing. The recommended floating position is to lean back in the water and keep your airway clear while keeping calm to maintain breathing levels. You should then be in a better position to attempt to swim to safety or call for help. Only 3% of respondents in the RNLI’s research cited floating as the first action they would take if they fell in to cold water unexpectedly. 40% of respondents said their immediate reaction would be to swim, while 2% said they would panic – two of the instinctive responses the RNLI is urging people to fight. Others said they would remove clothing (4%); do nothing (3%); hold their breath (1%), and 4% said they would not know what to do. Coastal fatality figures released today by the RNLI show 162 people lost their lives at the UK coast in the last year alone, with adult men accounting for 74% of deaths and 77% over the past five years. With the charity’s national drowning campaign Respect the Water now entering its fourth year, this year the RNLI are calling on the public to fight their instincts. RNLI Coastal Safety Manager Ross Macleod says: ‘Through our Respect the Water campaign, we want to start a national conversation about water safety. We’re asking the public to remember this lifesaving advice, share with others and practice the survival skill of floating – it could be the difference between life and death. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION : • The fatality figures quoted are for water-related fatalities from accidents and natural causes in UK tidal waters. The figures for 2012–2016 are: 163, 167, 163, 168 and 162. • In 2016, swimming, jumping in and general leisure use of the water accounted for 25% (40) of the deaths, walking and running 20% (32); commercial use of the water 16% (26); sailing and boating 10% (17). Unknown activity was 16% (26). WEBLINKS: www.respectthewater.com #RespecttheWater

Steven Callahan, Adrift 76 Days Alone at Sea, a Story of Survival 04-09-2017

On location, Steven Callahan discusses the inside story on what it was like being alone at sea day after day, not knowing if he could possibly survive. So many things at play could have doomed him, yet he kept on a moment at a time. He talks about the harrowing experience, and how he now views life through a filter. Steven Callahan's survival in a life raft in the Atlantic Ocean, which lasted 76 days, was a staggering ordeal alone at sea in an inflatable raft. His survival is a near miracle, he hung on and was determined it was not his time. His book, Adrift is a memoir of the event: http://amzn.to/2lvDp1e
Surviving One of the Deadliest Routes to Europe: Refugees at Sea

31:40
Desperate to escape conflict and poverty, thousands of migrants and refugees attempt the perilous journey to Europe each year, with many crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa in rubber dinghies and wooden boats. In the wake of the decommissioning of Mare Nostrum, a search and rescue operation run by Italy, the humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), launched their own vessel, named the Bourbon Argos, to find those stranded at sea and save those in trouble on one of the deadliest routes to Europe. On board the vessel, refugees and migrants are provided with medical aid, food, and shelter, then brought safely to Italian shores. Having survived life in Libya, ruthless treatment by smugglers, and horrific conditions aboard flimsy boats, once aboard the Bourbon Argos they face yet more uncertainty as they approach Europe. VICE News teamed up with MSF to document these search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and speak to rescued refugees and migrants, hearing about the suffering they have endured in their attempts to reach a new life. I Didn't Think We Would Survive... (Epic Storm)

10:10
Florida thunderstorm season is here and I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to share our story with you. We were kite fishing offshore off the Florida coast, when a dangerous thunderstorm started to develop on shore. Before we knew it the Epic lightning storm was quickly approaching and we were stuck in a crazy life or death situation. This was a scary experience and one that could have taken our lives. So many things could have gone wrong, from being struck by lighting, to our boat capsizing or being swept out to sea. Don't try to outsmart nature and stay safe out there. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ For business inquires: ►Email: [email protected]

Survive the Savage Sea (1992)

01:27:23
Jack and Claire Carpenter realize his life-long dream by selling the family farm and uprooting their four kids to buy the yacht Providence. Sons Gary, Brian and Timmy give it an honest try and daughter Susan decides to take a job in a port. Her place is taken by Wally Hudson, who wanted a lift to Tahiti and proves a spoiled brat, without the sailing experience he claimed. Shortly after sighting whales, they are hit by a whole group and sink, too fast to think of sending a radio message. Their inflatable raft is too small for six people and supplies are only for a day or three. To get 1,000 miles further, where sea traffic is far more likely to find them, Jack designs a sail. Everything proves hard, even the rain they desperately longed for, but the boys show great courage. Only after weeks Susan gets a search started.
