Oracle Issued A Statement Claiming HP Knew About Itanium End-Of-Life Plans
Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) issued a statement claiming that Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) knew all about itanium end-of-life plans before the company found out. The company stated, "We believe that HP specifically asked Oracle to guarantee long-term support for Itanium in the September of 2010 agreement because HP already knew all about Intel's plans to discontinue Itanium, and HP was concerned about what would happen when Oracle found out about that plan. What we know for certain is that Ray Lane and HP's current board members and Leo Apotheker and HP's current management team now know full well that Intel has plans in place to end-of-life of the Itanium microprocessor. Knowing this, HP issued numerous public statements in an attempt to mislead and deceive their customers and shareholders into believing that these plans to end-of-life Itanium do not exist. But they do. Intel's plans to end-of-life Itanium will be revealed in court now that HP has filed this utterly malicious and meritless lawsuit against Oracle." Oracle has a potential upside of 20.7% based on a current price of $31.16 and an average consensus analyst price target of $37.61.

Hewlett-Packard Sues Oracle Over Broken Contract Claims
June 16 (Bloomberg) -- Hewlett-Packard Co. sued Oracle Corp. over claims that in a period of eight months Oracle went from partner to "bitter antagonist" and has breached its contract. The lawsuit, filed yesterday in state court in San Jose, California, cites Oracle's hiring of Hewlett-Packard's former Chief Executive Officer Mark Hurd last year and Oracle's March announcement that it would no longer support its database software on Hewlett-Packard computer servers that use the Itanium chip. Deirdre Bolton reports on Bloomberg Television's "InsideTrack." (Source: Bloomberg)

Oracle Said It Will Cease All Efforts To Develop Technology Around The Itanium Chip
Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) said that it will cease all efforts to develop technology around Intel's (NASDAQ:INTC) Itanium chip, which reportedly took Intel and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) by surprise. The company said its decision on the chip came after multiple conversations with Intel senior management, which made it clear that their strategic focus is on their x86 microprocessor and that Itanium was nearing the end of its life. HP issued a statement saying, "We are shocked that Oracle would put enterprises and governments at risk while costing them hundreds of millions of dollars in lost productivity in a shameless gambit to limit fair competition." Oracle has a potential upside of 14.6% based on a current price of $31.41 and an average consensus analyst price target of $36.

HP-UX Performance Tip: Using Soft Reboot on HP-UX
HP-UX provides a feature Soft Reboot which does not return the server to system firmware and instead re-launches the operating system, thus avoiding the hardware and firmware self-tests on reboot that are not really necessary when there are no hardware/firmware changes and the user is either just rebooting the OS or installing OS updates. This feature can be used to save up to 50% in reboot times, on HP-UX on large configurations. Oracle to Court: Hewlett-Packard Was Underhanded In Settlement
All Things Digital reported that Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) is maintaining that the agreement it entered into with Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) last year over Oracle's hiring of former HP CEO Mark Hurd, is questionable since, at the time of the agreement, Oracle did not know that HP was near to hiring Leo Apotheker as its new CEO and Ray Lane, the former CEO and Ray Lane, the former Oracle COO and president, as its new chairman. In part of that settlement there was an understanding that a long standing partnership whereby Oracle would continue making software that runs on hardware using Intel's Itanium chip. Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) has a potential upside of 31.4% based on a current price of $27.87 and an average consensus analyst price target of $36.63.

HP: "still" committed to Itanium... for real!
http://www.uberpulse.com/us/2007/06/hp_still_committed_to_itanium.php So, I guess, the Itanium server chip is not dead after all. Well... actually HP is probably "the" sole reason why Intel has not shelved the moribund processor. The server company is slowly transitioning all its enterprise customers using old PA-RISC/MIPS/Alpha systems to its Itanium based Integrity platform. According to IDC, HP accounted for 70% of the total Itanium market in 2005, i.e $2.2 billion, which rose in 2006 at nearly 82% maket share of the total available market of $3.2 billion. This year the analyst firm expects the market to reach $4.2 billion and $6.8 billion by 2011. http://www.uberpulse.com/us/2007/06/hp_still_committed_to_itanium.php

Arun K Thiagrajan speaks how to incorporate Intel's Itanium processor in your products
Arun K Thiagrajan talks about how one can incorporate Intel's Itanium processor in their products. Posted by: Margaret Rouse WhatIs.com Itanium is Intel's first microprocessor that is based on the 64-bit architecture known as IA-64 . Developed under the code name of Merced , Itanium and its underlying architecture are expected to provide a foundation for the next-generation of software for the server and high-end workstation markets. Intel plans to follow Itanium with additional IA-64 microprocessors, which have the code names of McKinley, Madison, and Deerfield. In addition to supporting a 64-bit processor bus and a set of 28 register s, the 64-bit design allows access to a very large memory (VLM). In addition, the architecture exploits features in Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing ( EPIC ), a joint Intel and Hewlett-Packard development effort. These provide advances in the parallel processing handling of computer instruction s known as predication and speculation . An additional Itanium feature includes a Level 3 (L3) cache memory , to supplement the current L1 and L2 cache memories found in most of today's microcomputers. Most applications in use today are based on a 32-bit microprocessor architecture, and are designed for up to 4 gigabytes of memory. However, with application access to ever-larger databases becoming more important, many of the leading software and hardware suppliers in the computer industry have already begun to develop systems and applications for the Itanium and its ability to handle 64-bit address space. Dave Donatelli - HP Discover 2012 - theCUBE - #HPDiscover
HP's Enterprise Group is focusing all its R&D on three major strategies that it believes will define IT in the future, says HP Executive VP and General Manager of the Enterprise Group Dave Donatelli. Those are: Converged Infrastructure, Cloud in all its forms -- public and private, and, The Software-Defined Data Center. "I believe HP is driving all of them," he told SiliconAngle CEO John Furrier and Wikibon CEO David Vellante in an interview in the Cube kicking off SiliconAngle's exclusive worldwide coverage of HP Discover Europe 2012 from Frankfurt, Germany. You can watch live Webcasts of interviews at here. Because it is a major vendor of all three of the traditional IT silo products -- servers, storage, and networking, Donatelli said it is in an excellent position to drive these trends. It was a pioneer in Converged Infrastructure and designs its new infrastructure pieces to integrate easily into converged products. Its new Moonshot servers based on ARM and Adam processor chips are designed to support Cloud environments. Individual boards can be customized for specific applications, varying the amount of network speed, processing, and memory as needed. And because they are "just a little thicker than paper" and designed for lower heat generation, "thousands" can be placed into a rack, providing the huge scaling required by the new environment and workloads. In the Software Defined Data Center, LeftHand, a startup HP purchased two years ago, actually introduced the first software-defined storage product. HP so far has sold 150,000 LeftHand licenses, making it a leader in virtualized storage. It is also shipping its software-defined network product, and Moonshot is its answer to the software-defined server. More than that, however, Donatelli says HP's philosophy is that its hardware is the vehicle to deliver software, which is the real value in IT today. "We have thousands of engineers in the Enterprise Group. More than 80% of them are working on software." Solid-state storage is a fourth major driver in IT infrastructure, he says, and HP again is moving to put itself in the lead in this trend. "We have unified our solid-state supply chain from the smart phone through the desktop to the server. Because many more smartphones are being sold than servers, riding that price curve will be great for consumers." He says that customers can save 50% out of the gate with HP today and that curve will enhance that savings over time. The expansion of nonvolatile, solid-state memory is a huge strategic change in the infrastructure, he says. It will change the relationship in how servers are built and how storage and networks interact with those servers. "Since we have all three parts of the hardware equation, by putting flash storage in the center of developing in HP Labs we can drive that change." "Our customers are asking us to do three things: reduce complexity, improve agility, and reduce price. What we have to show is that by moving to the newer technologies they will save money. Yesterday we announced a guarantee that our customers would be able to store twice the data in the same space with the new generation products or we would give them storage for free, that they can run twice the VMs on our new servers, or we give them servers for free." That is part of HP's new heavy investment in go-to-market strategies to communicate its leading position in the IT infrastructure market, Donatelli said. But, he added, that investment will not take away from HP's commitment to maintain and build on its technical lead. "Some people have the hype. We prefer to have the products."
