Dressing for confidence and joy | Stasia Savasuk | TEDxPortsmouth

17:36
If you think style is superficial, then Stasia's personal story of how she redefined style might just change your mind... and your wardrobe! In this moving and highly personal talk, Stasia shares how she tried to protect her 5-year-old daughter — who had physical differences — from the pain of not fitting in by dressing her in "the cutest little bootcut jeans and capped sleeves you've ever seen." But it was her daughter, and her request for a button down shirt and bowtie, that transformed Stasia's understanding of how crucial style is to our sense of self. Stasia is a Style Coach and Body-Positivity Advocate who ushers women from feelings of insignificance, body shame and a perpetual state of “why-bother” into radically embracing who they are and who they want to be, and encouraging them to fully show up in the world. She is the founder and creator of Stasia’s Style School. https://www.stasiasavasuk.com/ Stasia Savasuk is a body-positivity advocate who teaches about Inside-Out Congruency--who we are on the outside can--and should-- reflect who we are on the inside, a concept that has changed the lives of thousands of girls and women. Don't Follow Your Passion

Should you follow your passion, wherever it may take you? Should you do only what you love...or learn to love what you do? How can you identify which path to take? How about which paths to avoid? TV personality Mike Rowe, star of "Dirty Jobs" and "Somebody's Gotta Do It," shares the dirty truth in PragerU's 2016 commencement address. The first is “Congratulations.” The second is “Good luck.” Everything else is what I like to call, “The Dirty Truth,” which is just another way of saying, “It’s my opinion.” And in my opinion, you have all been given some terrible advice, and that advice, is this: Follow your passion. Every time I watch the Oscars, I cringe when some famous movie star—trophy in hand—starts to deconstruct the secret of their success. It’s always the same thing: “Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t have what it takes, kid!”; and the ever popular, “Never give up on your dreams!” Look, I understand the importance of persistence, and the value of encouragement, but who tells a stranger to never give up on their dreams, without even knowing what it is they’re dreaming? How can Lady Gaga possibly know where your passion will lead you? Have these people never seen American Idol? Year after year, thousands of aspiring American Idols show up with great expectations, only to learn that they don’t possess the skills they thought they did. What’s really amazing though, is not their lack of talent—the world is full of people who can’t sing. It’s their genuine shock at being rejected—the incredible realization that their passion and their ability had nothing to do with each other. Look, if we’re talking about your hobby, by all means let your passion lead you. But when it comes to making a living, it’s easy to forget the dirty truth: just because you’re passionate about something doesn’t mean you won’t suck at it. And just because you’ve earned a degree in your chosen field, doesn't mean you’re gonna find your “dream job.” Dream Jobs are usually just that—dreams. But their imaginary existence just might keep you from exploring careers that offer a legitimate chance to perform meaningful work and develop a genuine passion for the job you already have. Because here’s another Dirty Truth: your happiness on the job has very little to do with the work itself. On Dirty Jobs, I remember a very successful septic tank cleaner, a multi-millionaire, who told me the secret to his success: “I looked around to see where everyone else was headed,” he said, “And then I went the opposite way. Then I got good at my work. Then I began to prosper. And then one day, I realized I was passionate about other people’s crap.” I’ve heard that same basic story from welders, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, HVAC professionals, hundreds of other skilled tradesmen who followed opportunity—not passion—and prospered as a result. Consider the reality of the current job market. Right now, millions of people with degrees and diplomas are out there competing for a relatively narrow set of opportunities that polite society calls “good careers.” Meanwhile, employers are struggling to fill nearly 5.8 million jobs that nobody’s trained to do. This is the skills gap, it’s real, and its cause is actually very simple: when people follow their passion, they miss out on all kinds of opportunities they didn’t even know existed. How language shapes the way we think | Lera Boroditsky

14:13
There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world -- and they all have different sounds, vocabularies and structures. But do they shape the way we think? Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares examples of language -- from an Aboriginal community in Australia that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian -- that suggest the answer is a resounding yes. "The beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is," Boroditsky says. "Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000." Learning styles & the importance of critical self-reflection | Tesia Marshik | TEDxUWLaCrosse

18:15
The belief in learning styles is so widespread, it is considered to be common sense. Few people ever challenge this belief, which has been deeply ingrained in our educational system. Teachers are routinely told that in order to be effective educators, they must identify & cater to individual students' learning styles; it is estimated that around 90% of students believe that they have a specific learning style but research suggests that learning styles don't actually exist! This presentation focuses on debunking this myth via research findings, explaining how/why the belief in learning styles is problematic, and examining the reasons why the belief persists despite the lack of evidence. Dr. Tesia Marshik is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Her research interests in educational psychology include student motivation, self-regulation, and teacher-student relationships. Why Do Gurus Have Beards? | Sadhguru

04:13
Sadhguru answers a question on why Gurus have beards. He turns the question around and asks why people are shaving in the first place. He looks back at history and explains how Indian men always had mustaches and beards, and this has changed today because of the influence of the British. [email protected] Economic Times Interview, Mumbai, Mar 2014 **************************************** Transcript: http://isha.sadhguru.org/blog/video/why-do-gurus-have-beards/ Sadhguru: I thought you’re old enough to know this – a beard does not grow on just Gurus, it grows on all men, really. Interviewer: Sure. Sadhguru: Believe me, it is so (Laughs). But they are all doing all kinds of funny things with it – you must ask them why are they doing it. No body part has come without a purpose, isn’t it? For everything, including the spleen, there is a purpose. So nature did not give you anything without a purpose. If… if you ask them why are they removing it, they don’t know, because… There’s an Englishman in the hall, so I have to temper my language (Laughs). When the English came to India, every Indian man had a beard or at least a moustache. Today you go out on the Mumbai Street, everybody’s a muchmunda. Is that the correct word? Hmm? Because they are trying to imitate the people who came and ruled them – because those who rule you are a symbol of power. Now, if you are in a certain level of sensitivity then you would know what is the effect and the aspect of, you know, everything in your body. You think this is fashion but you must understand the only reason why you are cutting your hair into various shapes and forms is because there is no pain in it. So if there was no pain in your nose – in the name of fashion you would have cut it into many shapes by now. Even though there is pain, people are poking it in ten different places today (Laughs). Suppose there was no pain in your whole body, you would have taken your intestines out and go like this (Gestures) on the streets, yes. Yes or no? Right now, most human beings are not conscious enough, their intelligence is not conscious enough even to preserve themselves if there was no pain. It’s only pain which is keeping them in one piece; otherwise they would cut themselves into two pieces and carry one hand here and one hand there. They would do all kinds of crazy things. Only pain is saving them, not their intelligence. If your intelligence begins to function, if your sensitivity begins to function then your concern will be about how you are within yourself and what you experience and how you can perceive more. Your concern will be not about how you look. So the advantage about the looks is… For ten years if I don’t have a mirror, I still look the same (Laughter). People who are removing all this, one day without a mirror they’ll look different, isn’t it? And whatever your fashion of the day… Have you seen pictures of people fifty years ago, hundred years ago? Somebody cut their moustache like this (Gestures), somebody did this, today you look at it, it looks funny, okay? They look like caricatures. And today’s fashions also will look like that after a period of time. But a full bearded man looks the same always – thousand years later he still looks the same, because that’s the way nature intended. Nature did not intend anything without a purpose. If you believe in geometry and design, so the design is like this. I don’t want to change the design of the Creator, I want to use it to the fullest benefit. There’re many benefits but you don’t try (Laughter). 5 tips for impressive Public Speaking – Speak with confidence | Personality Development

10:02
5 tips for impressive Public Speaking – Speak with confidence | Personality Development http://www.learnex.in/public-speaking-tips-speak-confidently/ Public speaking is a challenge and it has to be accepted. We all have that moment during speaking in public on the stage and we go blank. Have you had one of those moments at your public speaking stints? Well, I have certainly. Speaking in front of the crowd means, having to go through sleepless nights, nervousness, deadlines and many rounds to the toilet. Stay tuned as I share some public speaking tips to help you understand the mistake that you have been committing all this while. #1 How Vs What There is an age-old saying, “A good speech is like a pencil, it has to have a point.” For this very purpose, you might sit the entire week to frame the right points by adding on flowery words to make it look good. You might also make sufficient power point presentations adding graphics to them. The majority of your time would be spent on preparing the content for the event. But what we miss out is “How to say it?” Yes, we stress so much time on “what to say?” and very little time on “How to say?” #2 Connect better with a positive impression First and foremost, it is important that we not only make a lasting impression but make a positive one. Apart from humour, It’s important to look at your audience. Don’t keep your eyes fixed on a spot, rather watch across the hall making meaningful eye contact. This will Help you connect better with your audience. There is no better way of explaining a point than using examples from daily life or existing stories. Examples help to relate to the topic much better than anything else. #3 The crucial first 90 seconds: The start of your speech is extremely important. Walk in smartly, lay your notes on the podium, look up, keep your chin high and greet them with a smile. Make them believe that you know what you are doing. It always gives one comfort when the other one has everything under control. Be that person! The best way to capture attention is to think about a clear and strong phrase that people could relate to. #4. Don’t stand like you sit Unfortunately, as human beings, we stand like we sit, which is horrible. Never has a person who has dragged himself on the stage slouching, attracted people. You know what; most of us don’t realise that much of our confidence depends on the placement of our chin. Too high gives off an attitude of arrogance, while too low tells people you’re nervous. You must observe yourself in front of the mirror by exploring different angles until you find the most appropriate one. #5. Don’ts for Public Speaking Look down or off into space (make meaningful eye contact) Begin speaking before you’ve reached the front of the room Play with your hair (facial or on top of your head) Lean on one hip Point with a finger (use an open palm) Fold your arms Cross your legs Sway from side to side Turn your back to the audience I hope these public speaking tips have benefited you. To top it all nothing can be achieved without confidence before anything else work on that. Cheers!

What does the Quran really say about a Muslim woman's hijab? | Samina Ali | TEDxUniversityofNevada

17:48
In recent times, the resurgence of the hijab along with various countries’ enforcement of it has led many to believe that Muslim women are required by their faith to wear the hijab. In this informative talk, novelist Samina Ali takes us on a journey back to Prophet Muhammad's time to reveal what the term “hijab” really means -- and it's not the Muslim woman's veil! So what does “hijab” actually mean, if not the veil, and how have fundamentalists conflated the term to deny women their rights? This surprising and unprecedented idea will not only challenge your assumptions about hijab but will change the way you see Muslim women. Samina Ali is an award-winning author, activist and cultural commentator. Her debut novel, Madras on Rainy Days, won France’s prestigious Prix Premier Roman Etranger Award and was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award in Fiction. Ali’s work is driven by her belief in personal narrative as a force for achieving women’s individual and political freedom and in harnessing the power of media for social transformation. She is the curator of the groundbreaking, critically acclaimed virtual exhibition, Muslima: Muslim Women’s Art & Voices. Women in the 19th Century: Crash Course US History #16

13:11
In which John Green finally gets around to talking about some women's history. In the 19th Century, the United States was changing rapidly, as we noted in the recent Market Revolution and Reform Movements episodes. Things were also in a state of flux for women. The reform movements, which were in large part driven by women, gave these self-same women the idea that they could work on their own behalf, and radically improve the state of their own lives. So, while these women were working on prison reform, education reform, and abolition, they also started talking about equal rights, universal suffrage, temperance, and fair pay. Women like Susan B. Anthony, Carry Nation, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the Grimkés, and Lucretia Mott strove tirelessly to improve the lot of American women, and it worked, eventually. John will teach you about the Christian Temperance Union, the Seneca Falls Convention, the Declaration of Sentiments, and a whole bunch of other stuff that made life better for women. Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. Few women were as vocal for women's rights during the 19th century than Susan B. Anthony: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/the-life-s-work-of-susan-b-anthony Anthony worked for women's right to vote alongside great women like Sojourner Truth, who stressed the importance of intersectional feminism in her influential “Ain't I a Woman?” Speech: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/ain-t-i-a-woman Follow us! @thecrashcourse @realjohngreen @crashcoursestan @raoulmeyer @saysdanica Support CrashCourse on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse

How to give great customer service: The L.A.S.T. method

10:13
http://www.engvid.com/ Do you work in customer service? What do you do when your customer has a problem? In this video, I will teach you how to give great customer service. You will learn many polite expressions you can use with your customers. I will explain the Listen, Apologize, Solve, and Thank (L.A.S.T) method, which will help your performance at any customer service job. I'll also give you my customer service tips for dealing with an angry customer. After this video, watch Rebecca's video about phone customer service: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBSrZYXkkyE Take the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/how-to-give-great-customer-service-the-last-method/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video I am going to teach you a very, very important thing for customer service. I used to work in customer service, and this is actually one of the most important things I learned, and this is called the L-A-S-T or LAST approach. So, to get started, let's talk a little bit about: What is customer service? So, customer service is when you have customers, of course, and you're trying to make your customers as comfortable and happy as possible. You're also trying to meet their needs and expectations, and solve any problems or situations that they might have. So, customer service is a huge category. There's many, many different jobs where you use customer service. If you work in a hotel, for example, as a clerk, you know, in the lobby, as a bellhop, you will be using customer service. If you work at a restaurant as a server, you'll be using customer service, or as a hostess. If you're the manager of a store, you'll be using customer service. If you work in a business or even in a hospital, you'll be using customer service. So, pretty much any time you're dealing with people from the public and they're customers and you're trying to help them, you're doing customer service. So, there are many different problems that a customer might have. What are some examples of some problems? Can you think of anything, a problem a customer might have? Maybe somebody charged them too much for something, maybe they're in a store and the lineups are too long, maybe a customer is at a hotel and they're very unhappy because the Wi-Fi isn't working or their bed's uncomfortable. So, there's so many different problems customers might have at different types of businesses. In this video what I'm going to teach you is: What do you do when a customer has a problem? Okay? So, a very easy thing to do when a customer has a problem is called the LAST approach. "LAST", what does it stand for? Well, if a customer has a problem, the first thing you should do is listen to their problem, the next thing you should do is apologize, solve their problem, and thank them. So: Listen, Apologize, Solve, and Thank. We're going to look at expressions we use to show we're listening, expressions to apologize, expressions that can help us solve problems, and expressions to thank customers. Okay, so the first step when a customer has a problem is to listen. So, the first thing you should do is find out what the problem is. You can ask them: "What seems to be the problem?" or "How can I help you?" Okay? Once they start explaining what the problem is, very important that you look like you're actually listening and that you do listen. Okay? So, you shouldn't look at your watch: "Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm." Okay? That's a bad idea. You shouldn't look at the sky: "Uh, when is this person going to stop talking?" Okay? You shouldn't roll your eyes. Okay? No, no, no. You need to show that you actually care about what the customer is saying. So, showing you're listening is very important. You can repeat back to the customer what they're saying to show that you understand and to make sure that you did understand. So: "So what you're saying is, you know, there's no hot water in this hotel.", "So what you're saying is the Wi-Fi's not working and you're not happy with that." Okay? These are some examples. "So what you're saying is _________." You can also say: "Let me get this right..." "Let me get this right, what you're saying is that, you know, there's a problem at your table.", "What you're saying is that you've been waiting for your food for a really long time." So it's important to show that you are listening and you acknowledge what they have said. Okay. Now, sometimes with customer service you get a customer who's very angry, and maybe they start swearing, they start using very bad language. Okay? So if this happens, very important that you don't get upset. Okay? When this happened to me in the past, I would actually pretend to be a computer. I would not take anything personally. I would just smile and pretend to be a computer, and that's how I got through angry customers. So, if the person is rude... You know, it's not right if somebody is saying something rude to you, if they're swearing at you, or they're making you feel uncomfortable. So, be polite. Okay?

YOU LOOK DISGUSTING

03:12
Three months ago, I began posting images of myself without makeup on social media. The following film contains real comments that were left on images of my face. ** Click Show More** Over the past few months, I've received thousands of messages from people all over the world who suffer or have suffered from acne, an insecurity or self confidence issues. I wanted to create a film that showed how social media can set unrealistic expectations on both women and men. One challenge many face today, is that as a society, we're so used to seeing false images of perfection, and comparing ourselves to unrealistic beauty standards that It can be hard to remember the most important thing - You ARE beautiful. Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health? | Bailey Parnell | TEDxRyersonU

14:45
Scrolling through our social media feeds feels like a harmless part of our daily lives. But is it actually as harmless at seems? According to social media expert Bailey Parnell, our growing and unchecked obsession with social media has unintended long term consequences on our mental health. As social media continues to become part of the fabric of modern life – the “digital layer” – abstinence is becoming less of an option. Bailey think it’s high time we learned to practice safe social before it’s too late. What are the common triggers? How are they affecting you over time? How can you create a more positive experience online? Bailey covers this and more in “Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health?” Bailey Parnell was recently named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women. She is an award-winning digital marketer, public speaker and businesswoman with a talent for helping people tell better stories. Her work and expertise have been featured on CBC, CTV & in other local Toronto media. Bailey recently founded SkillsCamp, a soft skills training company where they help people develop the essential skills needed for professional success. She also currently works in digital marketing at Ryerson University. Bailey is a frequent public speaker having spoken to more than 10 thousand people. She primarily speaks about social media, personal branding, and media and mental health. She guest lectured her first MBA class at 21-years-old and has been the youngest speaker as multiple academic conferences. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Communication and Culture with a research focus on social media and mental health, and holds an honours BA from the RTA School of Media at Ryerson. Hillary was raised in a suburb of Illinois where she attended public school and was raised a Methodist by her parents. She attended Wellesley College, and went on to study law at Yale. After attending Yale Law School, she went to work for the Children’s Defense Fund, going door to door in New Bedford, Massachusetts. After serving as a lawyer for the Congressional Committee investigating President Nixon, she moved to Arkansas where she taught law and ran legal clinics representing poor people. She co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, one of the state’s first child advocacy groups. As First Lady under President Bill Clinton, Hillary tenaciously led the fight to reform our health care system so that all our families have access to the care they need at affordable prices. Hillary led the U.S. delegation to Beijing to attend the UN Fourth World Conference on Women and gave a groundbreaking speech, declaring that “human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights once and for all”—inspiring women worldwide and helping to galvanize a global movement for women’s rights and opportunities. Hillary was then elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first woman senator from New York. She repeatedly worked across the aisle to get things done, including working alongside Republicans after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. When Congress wouldn't do enough for rural areas and small towns, Hillary didn’t back down. She launched innovative partnerships with the tech industry and provided support to local colleges and small businesses. When President Obama asked Hillary to serve as his secretary of state, she answered the call to public service once again. She was a forceful champion for human rights, internet freedom, and rights and opportunities for women and girls, LGBT people and young people all around the globe. Now she’s running for President because everyday Americans need a champion and she wants to be that champion. ABOUT THE HILLARY CLINTON YOUTUBE CHANNEL Welcome to Hillary Clinton’s YouTube Channel.
