Does Language Learning Pay Off?

05:16
Does learning a language actually pay off? There were many ways in which we could answer this question. We could adopt a financial perspective and establish an average return on investment, or we could analyze the value not only in terms of riches, but also in terms of enrichment. With these approaches in mind, we interviewed Rob, asking him about how he learned the languages he speaks, and how these languages set him on his career path. We ended by posing him the question: does learning a language pay off? Here's what he had to say. Enjoy! In this episode of Fortnightly French I discuss with you how to make effective SMART goals to improve or start your language learning now that it's 2017. Whether you're a seasoned language learning polyglot or a beginners as a New Years resolution. I will also share with you my targets and aims for this year for my learning French and encourage you to share your thoughts also so we may progress together. However I hope I will be able to continue meeting up with my friend once a week to practice French conversation and aim to make the most of opportunities to practice speaking in French whether with natives or through YouTube videos. I would also like to refresh my memory of the French tenses, whether through grammar books, Babbel or through evening courses, particularly the subjunctive/subjonctif. I feel my French vocabulary is doing fine and I could improve rapidly by reviewing this again. == MY STORY! To learn how BiNaural Beats work check out this article: http://www.healing4happiness.com/binaural-beats/ #BiNauralBeats Super Learning - Super Learning was first discovered or coined by Dr. Georgi Lozanov in 1960 in his laboratory in Bulgaria. Since then it has taken a very slow emergence into the rest of the world, with his government trying to remove him. The success of his super learning methods is astounding. He was able to increase the memory and cognitive abilities in some cases by up to thirty times using Alpha Waves to naturally induce an Alpha Brain State. Now that's a whole lot more memory and thirty times faster learning! Most of his studies were done with foreign language learning. This involves many parts of the brain including memory, concentration, focus, and reasoning or logical thinking. With our own test using our specially engineered Alpha BiNaural Beat, we have found that 83% people get 2x - 5x improved focus, memory, concentration and overall super learning. Another 9% have results between 15x and 30x super learning abilities. We were not able to determine those who fell between the 6 - 14 times and the other 8% were not affected by the BiNaural Beats. A trick for remembering things you keep forgetting - Language Learning

19:08
This is the 42nd episode of my French learning series, Follow My French. In this episode I share with you a trick/tip/hack/method I use when I can't remember something that I'm trying to learn or keep mixing up. The trick involves creating associations, link, connections, pictures, diagrams, memories involving what you are trying to remember. I give examples that have genuinely worked for me when trying to learn French, some examples of how you could apply this to your own struggles, and end by offering some 'memory solutions' to the problems of my subscribers. This method could be used for anything, not just language learning. For example remembering dates for a history test, birthdays, street names and shopping lists! Deutsch: Useful Books, Magazines, & Resources for Learning German

15:02
Here are a few books and other resources that I have found useful in studying German, including introductory material and more advanced books. These resources range from learning grammar, to conversational speech, cultural education, and also various sources from which to hear or read native German like music, novels, and magazines. See the various material references below. (Note: Sorry, I know my pronunciation of some German words still needs work. Note#2: The audio unfortunately is slightly (and irredeemably) out of sync and this is the best that I could edit it under the circumstances.) Also, there is a cellphone app called Busuu (I use it on my Android) that has some free lessons for various languages including German, although you have to pay to unlock all the features. It is very practical and quite enjoyable to use, and great for when you are traveling. List of resources mentioned: - "German Made Simple" (Revised Edition) by Arnold Leitner, PhD.. New York: Broadway Books, 2006. - "Teach Yourself: Beginner's German" by Rosi McNab. Chicago: McGraw-Hill, 2003. - "A Practical Review of German Grammar" (First edition) by Gerda Dippmann. New Jersey: Prentice-Hall, 1987. (Newer editions available) - "The Essentials of German" by Linda Thomas, PhD. New Jersey: Research & Education Association, 2001. - "Barron's 501 German Verbs" (Fourth Edition) by Henry Strutz. New York: Barrons's Educational Series, 2008. - [Dictionary]: "Langenscheidts Universal-Wörterbuch: Englisch". Berlin: Druckhaus Langenscheidt, 1976. - [Dictionary]: "Cassel's New Compact German Dictionary". Funk & Wagnalls, 1966. (Twelfth Edition, 1979 available) - [Novel] "Sherlock Holmes junior: Ruf des Nachtvogels" by Dieter Schliwka. Düsseldorf, 1983. - [Magazine Series] "German Life". Note: You can find this at most major bookstore chains like Books-a-Million and Barnes & Noble. Other resources: - "Barron's Learn German The Fast and Fun Way" (Third Edition) by Paul G. Graves. New York: Barrons's Educational Series, 2004. - "Barron's Mastering German Vocabulary: A Thematic Approach" by Gabrielle Forst et al. New York: Barrons's Educational Series, 1995.

Spanish Language Learning Philosophy Part 2 of 2

10:15
Some tips on how to develop your Spanish speaking abilities. Reading - Children's books are so useful even for adults! You can learn new vocabulary & syntax (sentence structure) in a fun and easy way. You can REINFORCE what you already know when you see familiar words. And: When you read aloud, you can allow yourself to improve your pronunciation, especially if you use audio books / cds. These are made available at some libraries & at book stores / online. :-) So, if you want to improve your pronunciation: children's books can be a great start. Try it! (Clifford va de viaje is my favorite!) Writing - You can write in a gratitude or diary everyday at intermediate / advanced beginner levels. (Ex: Doy gracias por mi casa.../ Hoy fui a la biblioteca.) Producing written language will help you somewhat with your spoken language, given you provide yourself opportunities to speak. Writing will allow you the opportunity to produce written language in a stress free, untimed environment (whereas speach exist more in real time :)) Listening: Spanish songs, movies, TV, radio - in your car, while your cleaning your house! Expose yourself to the language as much as you can during your busy day. Some good artists: Shakira, Juanes, Nek, La oreja de Van Gogh, Belanova (Rosa Pastel is a great song). Look up words you don't know! When you hear the songs (over and over again, which is the nature of music) you will reinforce learned material! Favorite movies: Nueve reinas - Nine Queens (funny), Mar adentro, The Sea Inside (philosophical), La historia oficial, The Official History (historical & intense) Speaking: Use a recorder and speak into it talking about: your day, your plans, what you're grateful for, your dreams :-). Get a magazine and describe whatever you are able to. I will model this in a future video. It's super fun and easy for all levels! Record yourself - make videos en espanol. I can do this for ya'll too if ya like en espanol. That's all folks!

How to Stop Translating in Your Head and Start Thinking in English Like a Native

14:54
Stop translating in your head and speak fluent, natural English without hesitations. See the FULL lesson on the blog: http://bit.ly/2Ts72yk Start reading the English Fluency Formula ebook with a FREE sample: http://bit.ly/2PDymf4 In conversations and other situations where you need to be able to process information quickly and respond immediately, translating in your head is a big problem. It slows you down. It makes you hesitate. At times you’ll completely miss out on the conversation because your chance to jump in has come and gone and you’re still trying to translate. On top of all that, a lot of slang, idioms and phrasal verbs can be difficult to translate quickly — if at all! It’s really best for your fluency if you stop translating in your head and learn to start thinking in English. Thinking in English is very important to developing your fluency in English… so let’s go! Here are my nine tips for thinking in English. DO DAILY ACTIVITIES IN ENGLISH Can you change your phone settings to English? How about talking to your pet in English when you’re going for a walk? If you commute to work by train or bus could you buy your fare in English? LISTEN TO MORE ENGLISH FOR IMMERSION WITH NATIVE SPEAKERS Turn on the internet radio, download podcasts, put Netflix or YouTube on in the background while you’re doing your chores or work! Your brain is so amazing that it will begin to recognize patterns and want to follow them too! TRY GUESSING OR PLANNING WHAT ENGLISH SPEAKERS ARE GOING TO SAY When you predict the conversation based on experience, you’ll be more confident and ready to respond. Imagine the conversations that you want to have in the future and create them before they happen so you feel more prepared. It may not go word-for-word how you plan it, so be ready for change. You could write the conversation down and practice it a few times. STOP LEARNING EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH TRANSLATION Observe, watch, hear, smell and relate vocabulary directly to its meaning — not the word in your first language. USE A MONOLINGUAL DICTIONARY A bilingual dictionary is good for one thing — to put your coffee cup on so it doesn’t leave rings on your table. LABEL OBJECTS IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE IN ENGLISH You can do this in your mind or actually on pieces of paper taped to the objects (or use sticky notes). Start with everyday objects that you use every day! For example, if I have a book at home and I am learning Portuguese I would label it “livro,” or if I am learning Arabic then I would label it “kitab.” Every time I look at it I am reminded to think that word! TALK TO YOURSELF IN ENGLISH Ask yourself questions and answer them. Make up a short story about a person you see on your way to work. You may want to do this in private when no one else is within earshot. It’s ok if you are not sure if your grammar is perfect, or if you make a mistake. No one will know! If you’re not sure if what you said to yourself is correct or not, then make a note to yourself to find out! You can do some research online, or ask your teacher or a native speaker friend later. JUST START THINKING IN ENGLISH WITH A MANTRA Even the smallest effort is better than nothing. Start with a mantra, or motto, that will help you get started each day in English. For example, “My English is getting better each day.” THINK A LITTLE MORE IN ENGLISH EACH DAY Start small. Make it a habit to think in English a little each day. Set an alarm if it’s hard to remember to switch into English. Then use the timer on your phone or computer to 1 minute to start and think only in English for that amount of time. It doesn’t matter what you think about, or even if you just say a few of the same phrases over and over. See if you can extend the time each day by 30 seconds! Why language learning is just like lego! Genki English & GenkiJapan.net

03:11
Learn to teach @ http://GenkiEnglish.net Get Fluent in Japanese @ http://GenkiJapan.net Language learning (or teaching) is just like Lego. At first you start with a blank piece of paper. (Although a skilled teacher will be able to show you that you already know many “secret” words :) ) Then you add some blocks. And you play. And make new structures and new toys. And often you’ll learn blocks in prebuilt chunks, like an aeroplane or full sentence. And you can break it apart and swap bits from other sets. The teacher will give you feedback and ask you what you think. And of course the key is play. If all you do everyday is study the textbook without any play you won’t get far at all. So grab yourself some new bricks and play away as much as you can! Be Genki Richard

Othertongue: Language Learning Card Game Review

04:52
Hello there! I was asked to review Othertongue by its creator, and of course I was thrilled! If you've been around here a while you know I love gaming and I love learning languages so being able to work with someone else who has the same passions as me was fantastic! You can find all of his stuff listed here: Twitter: https://twitter.com/langcardgames YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoua34idcF4Z4pLR73DhNow Website/shop: https://languagecardgames.com/ Like all things there are goods and bads, but I'd say that this has many more pros than it has cons. I'll definitely be playing this in the future, although I'll probably be taking some of these cards out of my deck, in particular that godforsaken horse card! Haha Don't forget to find me on Facebook so we can study hard together! www.facebook.com/languagelearninglounge Or on Twitter! @TheLLLounge

Thai Language Learning in Chiang Mai

04:22
I've studied Thai for 18 months now at the rate of 15 hours a week in class. I have about 1200 in class hours, 70% of those with a private tutor. One thing I can tell you is that switching schools/teachers about every 3-6 months has been incredibly helpful. 4 hours some days in class with another hour or so out practicing. How we make it work in Thailand. Where to shop, eat, have fun, manage expenses, and more. Sold everything and moved my big family to Northern Thailand. Here's what our life looks like and some things you can expect from this city. Please message me through this channel with any questions.
