It has been used in India for nearly 5,000 years for conditions in children, weakness and debility in old age, rheumatism, constipation, insomnia, nervous conditions, stress, joint inflammation, parasites, hormone balance, and more. A paste made from the ashwagandha root powder applied topically to treat boils, ulcers, and other skin irritations and infections. Ashwagandha is known to help people strengthen their immune system after illness, chemotherapy, or surgery. It is a highly effective, evidence-based remedy to help reduce stress and anxiety—by lowering cortisol levels and mimicking the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. These are easy things to measure and track so you can have an idea of how your health is now and how it's improving as you make changes to your diet and exercise plan. Disclaimer: This information is for reference purposes ONLY and cannot replace personal information you can and should discuss with your Doctor. These measurements are simply a way to regularly monitor basic health information at home. **Measurement #1 – Waist Circumference When it comes to body measurements for weight loss, this is an easy one that you can start with. Measuring around your middle, without breathing in will be a great indicator of improved health as you start to lose weight and inches from your belly. A large waist circumference can often be an indicator of high levels of visceral fat, which is a dangerous fat that, at high levels, can start to have a negative impact on your internal organs. Visceral fat can surround these organs and start to squeeze them, impairing their function and causing health issues such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease. **Measurement #2 – Morning Blood Sugar Checking your morning blood sugar is not only something diabetics should do. It’s something everyone should do, especially if you’re overweight and taking body measurements for health. If your morning blood sugar has a high reading, like over 100, you should seriously consider cleaning up your diet and your general lifestyle. Ideally, you should have a reading of around 95 or lower. **Measurement #3 – Morning Heart Rate Morning heart rate or resting heart rate is one of the great body measurements for men, whether you’re an active athlete or a self-confessed couch potato. Lower readings of your morning heart rate are usually indicative of good health and fitness levels. You can check your morning heart rate by placing two fingers on the inside of your wrist, on the side towards your thumb until you find your pulse. Count how many times it pulses in 1 minute, and there you have it… your morning heart rate. A ‘good’ reading is typically between 62-65 for men, depending on age. ‘Excellent’ is around 55-63 and what’s considered ‘below average’ are readings of over 75. If you are regularly at 75 or over, you are not within healthy body measurements so I would recommend a lifestyle change with either healthier eating, more exercise, or both. **Measurement #4 – Weight Over Time Taking your weight is one of the easiest body measurements for health and fitness you can take. Standing on your scales and getting a readout generally shows you whether you are doing good or whether you need to make some changes. An interesting side to this body measurement is that weighing yourself regularly acts as a feedback loop, linking any particularly bad habits with a negative result on the scale. If you have a ‘bad day’ and overindulge with unhealthy food, you're likely to see this reflected on the scale the following day. The feedback loop is your brain associating the negative result with a feeling that you don’t want (generally disappointment). You then know that to avoid the feeling of disappointment, you should make sure to limit your indulgences and stick to a healthier plan. **Measurement #5 – Hours Spent Sitting The last of our recommended body measurements for health is how many hours each day you spend sitting. Today, with many people working in offices, the number of hours sitting for the average person is on a drastic incline. The scary statistic behind this is that people who spend more than 6 hours per day sitting are 44% more susceptible to death from any cause. I know that sounds strange, and there is nothing to pinpoint the exact reason for what the science suggests, but it is clear that sitting a lot leads to health issues. It could possibly be due to things like circulation, inflammation, or squashing of organs in the seated position. These are all hypothetical, but regardless, my recommendation is to limit the amount of time you spend sitting each day. So, those are my 5 best body measurements for men. Regularly checking them and keeping track will pay dividends as you make improvements to your lifestyle.
