Hi, my name is Jonathan Globerson. I'm a professional industrial designer. I'm also the CEO of GloberDesign, a product development company located in North Miami Beach in Florida. I want to tell you about the simple steps that you need to take in order to launch a new product into the market. The first thing to do is research. Do your research really good: locate your market; look who is your competition; how much are they selling their product for; what are their features; do they have any patents on it. Then you'll also do an additional patent search. That can either be done by yourself, or by a hired professional attorney or any other firm that can help you do that. Next, simply take a pen and paper and start sketching. Even if you're not the best sketcher in the world, it's fine; all you need to do is put your idea onto paper. Next, you need to create a 3D computer model. The way to do that is either hire a 3d computer artist or a 3D CAD draftsman and have them convert your beautiful sketch into a real 3D model. What they do with that? You can do with that various things. The first thing you can do with that is you can create a prototype. A prototype is the first sample of the actual product that you're having in mind. We can do it with various ways. Today we have 3D printers - they actually read a 3D computer model and they convert that into plastic parts that could be used and shown physically. The other thing that you can do with your 3D model is create patent drawings. These patent drawings you can apply for what's called a Provisional Application. That gives you 12 months of patent pending status. That's just enough time for you to start to pitch your investors, talk to buyers, talk to factories, and find out more details on how you can actually make your product come true. With the 3d computer model you also send that out to a factory, have them first sign for you what's called a Non-Disclosure Agreement, meaning anything that... information they receive, they keep it as a secret. With that you'll get real manufacturing pricing and then you can make your own business plan. So, now you know your manufacturing pricing, you can figure out what's going to wholesale for, and what is going to be the retail price. Last, start making some marketing materials. Do a sales sheet, a brochure about your product; maybe even a kickstarter campaign, or maybe just a promotional video, just so you could show people what do you have in mind and try to get more attraction. And those are really the simple steps that you need to take in order to create a new product. For more details just visit our website http://www.globerdesign.com

Professor Gita Johar talks about the Product Development Using Systematic Inventive Thinking (SIT)® course, in collaboration with Columbia Business School. Successful companies, such as Kraft, Shell, BASF, Nestle, Amdocs, Johnson & Johnson, and many others employ the Systematic Inventive Thinking (SIT) methodology to solve key business challenges, achieve extraordinary results in product development, and rapidly innovate. In this course, you will explore the SIT methodology, one of the most popular and well-known methodologies for innovation whose foundation evolves from a key principle that inventive solutions share common patterns. Further, you will learn how to extract these patterns using the five thinking tools: Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Task Unification and Attribute Dependency. Applying these five systematic thinking tools during the process of product development will help you identify new ideas, solutions, and products or define new needs for a particular product. Systematic Inventive Thinking approach begins by studying an existing product and its features. The approach focuses on the notion that function follows form, where the likely success and production viability is evaluated after visualizing the improved product. By focusing on the core principles of SIT, you can significantly improve your product development pipeline and create a culture of innovation within your teams and organization.

Arena’s all-in-one product development platform embeds product lifecycle management, supply chain collaboration, application lifecycle management and quality management all into a single solution. PLM, ALM and QMS are combined, from the ground up — not bandaged together like disparate solutions which invite interoperability challenges. In today’s modern product development world, innovative product companies need better supply chain wide visibility to lower costs, reduce risk and maximize business success. Arena is the only one to create this unified solution in a 100% SaaS based multi-tenant architecture. This provides a single instance of software for superior scalability and makes upgrades effortless for the user. Analysts like IDC, CIMdata and Tech Clarity agree that a single product development platform, or a product innovation platform — one that covers PLM, ALM and QM — is the best approach to deal with complexities and quality demands. Quality and PLM historically had been owned by different departments, which has led to compromised processes. Now with this unified approach, all the people know all the stuff—all the time—both upstream and downstream. NPD and NPI just got a whole lot easier—and affordable.

Introduction: Increasing market demands and tough competition are driving MEMS companies to develop new products at an increasing rate. In this fast-paced environment, minimizing time-to-market is becoming critical. The need to quickly develop new sensor prototypes and quickly ramp into production calls for existing, proven, off-the-shelf sensor signal conditioners. Typically, MEMS product companies will develop their signal conditioner in conjunction with a MEMS sensor -- either by internal development or by an external ASIC design provider. The ASIC is specifically equipped with an analog front-end that converts the analog output of the MEMS to the digital domain. Consequently, the sensor and ASIC must be highly compatible to account for the analog output signal level with respect to offset, gain, sensitivity, linearity and other factors. Developing one side of this equation is challenging, but doing both in parallel is wrought with uncertainty as both the MEMS and ASIC can only be simulated and not fully tested until they both exist in silicon. The result is often a race to continuously revise the MEMS, ASIC, or both until they "fit" sufficiently to be launched as a final product. This "fit" comes in addition to all other design considerations that must be given to an integrated sensor device with a physical sensor microstructure and a complex mixed-signal ASIC. Repeated ASIC and MEMS tape-outs are costly, resource intensive and time-consuming. The risk is always that the final integrated product misses its design specification and market. Si-Ware Systems (SWS) has developed unique development platforms that combine high performance ASICs with configurability and programmability to interface with a variety of MEMS devices. With these platforms, time, risk, and cost are dramatically reduced for MEMS product development. About us: Si-Ware Systems (SWS) is an independent fabless semiconductor company providing a wide spectrum of product design and development solutions, custom ASIC development and supply, as well as standard products. SWS is a leader in ASICs for MEMS devices. The company has developed unique ASICs and development platforms that provide best in class performance for MEMS devices, such as MEMS inertial sensors. With SWS' development platforms, MEMS devices such as gyros can be brought up and running quickly, allowing developers to immediately do evaluation and characterization. With SWS' expertise in modeling and characterizing MEMS devices, custom ASICs can be developed in a shorter amount of time than what is typical in the industry. Watch more from the O'Reilly Software Architecture Conference: http://goo.gl/lXpXnG It wasn’t too long ago that artisans, bathed in the glow of molten metal, forged parts that would go on to make up bigger, more powerful machines. Today, we call those artisans developers. Instead of metal, they use bits and bytes in the cloud to forge a modern application architecture. It’s an architecture that supports public, private and hybrid application deployment. One that enables users and developers to move their applications wherever they need to go. And it’s built on a growing, vibrant ecosystem. In this talk, I’ll give you a look at the technologies driving this new level of efficiency for application developers (tech like containers, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Cloud Foundry and social coding tools like GitHub). And I’ll explain why many prominent members of the Fortune 500 are building their futures on this modern application architecture. About Sam Ramji (Cloud Foundry Foundation): Sam Ramji is CEO of the Cloud Foundry Foundation. He has over 20 years of industry experience in enterprise software, product development, and open source strategy. He previously served as Vice President of Strategy of Apigee, one of the 5 fastest-growing software companies in the Deloitte Fast 500, and is a member of their Board of Advisors. He joined Apigee from Microsoft, where he was responsible for driving Microsoft’s worldwide open source strategy. He drove many of Microsoft’s contributions to open source and its shift to embrace open source technologies like PHP. He was a leader in BEA’s move into EAI/ESB as a founding member of the AquaLogic product team. Mr. Ramji has built large-scale enterprise and Web-scale applications, leading the Ofoto engineering team through its acquisition by Kodak. His other experience includes leading engineering teams to build large-scale applications on open source software, as well as hands-on development of client, client-server and distributed applications on Unix, Windows and Macintosh at prior companies. He is a Member of the Institute for Generative Leadership. Sam holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Cognitive Science from the University of California at San Diego. His work has been covered in Wired and many other industry publications. For more information, visit: http://oreil.ly/1Cyt9nt Software architecture is a massive multidisciplinary subject, covering many roles and responsibilities, which makes it challenging to teach because so much context is required for every subject. It's also a fast-moving discipline, where entire suites of best practices become obsolete overnight. The O'Reilly Software Architecture Conference is a new event designed to provide the necessary professional training that software architects and aspiring software architects need to succeed. At Silicon Valley Code Camp, David Spark chatted with Scott Mauvais of the Microsoft Technology Center, a huge lab that tests applications for risk mitigation. For example, say your program is just used for small mom and pop operations, yet you just got an order for an enterprise-level roll out. Can your application handle the new load? Will it crush under the new untested pressure? Mauvais said this is the most common problem he sees that many don't consider. You need to test for scale.

An aggregate project plan (APP) is a mechanism to ensure that the collective set of projects will accomplish the development goals and objectives and build on the organizational capabilities needed for ongoing development success. Projects can be differentiated into five types of projects: breakthrough, platform, derivative, R and D, or partnered projects, such as projects performed with partners or allianced firms. This differentiation determines a project's development goals and objectives as well as resources allocated to that project. Breakthrough projects generate new core products and processes that are fundamentally different from previous generations. A good example is the Airbus A380. Next, Platform projects are middle of the development spectrum and are harder to define. They entail more product or process change. For example, Black and Decker are noted for making small compact electric motors which they use to create new products from power drills, garden tools and home products. Derivative projects are initiatives that realize small advances in the firms current offerings, or production processes, such as making cost reductions, providing line extensions by adding or subtracting secondary features and devising incremental improvements for an existing production process. Research and advanced development projects aim at inventing new science or capturing new know-how- so that required knowledge will be available for application in specific development projects. Lastly, Alliances and partnership projects are those done in conjunction with one or more outside firms. Reference: Wheelwright, Steven; Clark, Kim B. (1992). Revolutionizing product development. Three new products in three months’ time Where is the heart of your company? What is the place where new and innovative products first see the light? Talking with Ishay Kokavka (CEO), it is clear that Shiratech is exactly at the heart of developments. As part of the AY Electronics group, Shiratec takes care of new product development for all the different departments and clients of the group. With development teams in Russia, Israel and India and strong partnerships with companies like Analog, STMicroelectronics and NXP, Shiratech is in a good position to do rapid development. The company gained their experience with the development of Smarc (Smart Mobility ARChitecture) and designing boards for the 96Board communities. “Very fast development is our big advantage”, explains Ishay Kokavka, “With the teams we have in the different countries we can do developments in 3 to 4 months’ time, we have all the expertise in house.” Shiratech is showing three new products at the Embedded World 2019 edition in Nuremberg. The first one is a bodycam project, which has a camera and other sensors inside that allow security people to record and communicate data in case of emergencies. It offers live streaming and analytics, and because it is an open platform it allows you to develop your own specific applications or analytics. The device can communicate through WiFi, Bluetooth and 4G and provides continuous live streaming to a control centre. The second product Shiratech developed, together with Analog and Arrow, will allow companies to do preventive maintenance on their installations. The product has four sensors (temperature, acceleration, magnetic and acoustic) that can create a profile of the machine or motor in operation. These profile data can be monitored and compared with previous collected data or data received from identical machines. The profile will tell you if the system needs repairs or is ready for maintenance. This product can be connected with, for example, a motor and keep a close eye on its performance. With this solution you can reduce costs of maintenance and create an industrial environment with a guaranteed high uptime. The third product is a full home automation solution that will help you keep your house and the people living in it safe. Inside the box the electronics use the same format as the 98board and uses a mezzanine to add new functionalities. The systems uses sensors and microphones to monitor the house or premises. The integrated microphones can be programmed to communicate, for example with elders in case of an emergency. You can use it as a baby monitor, or any other application that requires vocal contact between a control centre and the home. “The most important message is that we developed these products in three months and that we can be trusted as a production partner. Other companies trust us and they know they can expect new products within a very short timeframe”, explains Ishay Kokavka. “The next step is to find new partners that can open up new markets and do the actual sales of the product.” The interview was recorded at the Embedded World 2019. I was hired by a big oil company to lead a new project with dozens of developers to build a product that would be used by every employee in the company. No pressure, right? On the first day, the hiring manager realized I was in way over my head and pulled me aside to tell me I had 2 weeks to “figure things out”. Umm… ok? I had no clue what that meant... but the stakes were clear, and I couldn’t lose this project. I hadn’t worked in 2 months and if I failed, it meant moving back in with my parents. In this week’s video I share the journey of how I went from a newbie leader on the verge of being forced onto my mother’s couch… … to someone who successfully managed a multi-million dollar project for 2 years. The best way for me to show you the difference is by using a real world example... ... so this week I use our new set design (it’s still not finished - it’s an iteration away but watch the video above to check it out). I worked with my buddy Tim to build it out and let's just say there were some hiccups. So in many ways this video is for him... a primer on how to manage projects with a bend on software (my world)! I go over: -- How to use time blocking to define constraints & force creativity -- How to write outcome driven user stories to set expectations -- Why you should prototype the unknowns -- The right way to validate interdepencies amongst various departments I also wrap up with a myth that needs to be squashed around “planning” and why nothing works out the way it should and how to overcome that. Recently I got a call from a founder who had invested $1.5M into a software project. It had been 2 years and they still hadn’t launched. In many ways, this video is for them, too. Now it’s your turn... what have you learned about managing projects over the years? What are some tricks for keeping people on scope, on budget and on track? Leave a comment with your best strategies! Dan “still undecided about gantt charts” Martell Don't forget to share this entrepreneurial advice with your friends, so they can learn too: https://youtu.be/Y7sJwlyuoWw ===================== ABOUT DAN MARTELL ===================== “You can only keep what you give away.” That’s the mantra that’s shaped Dan Martell from a struggling 20-something business owner in the Canadian Maritimes (which is waaay out east) to a successful startup founder who’s raised more than $3 million in venture funding and exited not one... not two... but three tech businesses: Clarity.fm, Spheric and Flowtown. You can only keep what you give away. That philosophy has led Dan to invest in 33+ early stage startups such as Udemy, Intercom, Unbounce and Foodspotting. It’s also helped him shape the future of Hootsuite as an advisor to the social media tour de force. An activator, a tech geek, an adrenaline junkie and, yes, a romantic (ask his wife Renee), Dan has recently turned his attention to teaching startups a fundamental, little-discussed lesson that directly impacts their growth: how to scale. You’ll find not only incredible insights in every moment of every talk Dan gives - but also highly actionable takeaways that will propel your business forward. Because Dan gives freely of all that he knows. After all, you can only keep what you give away.
