A New Course ------- Just over a month ago, our adventure into Lean - that’s “Lean” as in “The Lean Startup” - reached an interesting stage. I launched a product. A Minimum Viable Product. The “Course of Some Kind” crystalised into “Scrum vs Kanban - the Mini-course”. Here are FIVE things that I learned along the way: 1: Launch before you’re ready ----- Are you the kind of person that hears "Done Is Better Than Perfect" or “Shipping beats perfection” and thinks: “Really Are you sure ” If so, you’re in good company. “Hello. My name is Gary. I’m perfectionist.” October was hell for me. My task was take existing material and to repurpose it into a mini-course. That doesn’t sound like a recipe for torment. But the more I worked on the course, the less I liked it. I wanted to rip it up and start again. If this sounds like you, then take a note from Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn "If You're Not Embarrassed By The First Version Of Your Product, You’ve Launched Too Late" So pick and date. And launch. Before you’re ready. Bonus Tip: Set things up so that the date can’t be moved. I wrote the launch into an episode of Development that Pays. At that point, I was committed! 2: Remember that there are more moving parts than you think. ---- Your focus will the on the product. That’s only natural. But a product won’t launch itself. You’re going to need plumbing. I had my three videos. I also had an email service capable of sending time-delayed emails. Three videos. Three emails. Simples. But it’s probably not a great idea to send people direct to the video: each should be on its own page... And I’m going to need a form - so that people can sign up... And the form is going to need page to “live on”... And…. I think you get the message :) 3: Launch to a limited audience ---- Although it’s important to launch before you’re ready, you don’t have to be damn fool about it; not everyone has to see your “warts and all” version. So launch… but make it a soft launch. Wikipedia defines a soft launch as “a preview release of a product or service to a limited audience prior to the general public”. In the case of the “Scrum vs Kanban the Mini Course”, I “hid” the announcement in a “regular” Development That Pays episode: only people that watched one particular episode all the way to the 4 and half minute mark got the link. 4 - Be ready to make running repairs ----- Launch day rolls around. You push the Big Green Button, and breath a sigh of relief. But don’t relax too much! To paraphrase Mickey Rouke’s character in Body Heat: “You got fifty ways you're gonna * up. If you think of twenty-five of them, then you're a genius... and you ain't no genius.” Well you may be you are a genius. I am not. A genius would not have…. wasn’t expecting to told that one of my videos had TWO audio tracks. - A genius would not have I wasn’t expecting requests for the second lesson on day one. So expect things to go wrong… and be at the ready to make running repairs. 5 - Remember that it’s an experiment ---- It bares repeating: Remember that it’s an Experiment*. This one cuts two ways: It’s a reminder not to over-egg the pudding. This is a Minimum Viable Product, not a Final Perfect Product. It’s also a reminder to measure. Your Minimum Viable Product is part of the Build Measure Learn loop. And if you don’t measure, you won’t learn. Three critical lessons for launching your product
At the PRSummit in San Francisco I got a chance to see Josh Weinberg's great keynote presentation, "Launch Lessons" where he shared tips for launching your company. I ran into Weinberg, founder of Digital Life Consulting Group again at the Mobilize 2011 conference in San Francisco, and I asked him to offer up three key tips for launching your product. Launch Tip #1 - The launch planning begins at product inception, not six weeks before product release Don't think about the launch as the party. You need to think of the launch as the culmination of the work that comes together on that day. That means plan your launch a year out, not six weeks before. Good example: Bose When they release a product the entire flow of connecting with the product has been thought out. There's customer support on their site when they announce and you can actually purchase the product. Bad example: Sony tablets A year ago Sony announced they were going to release tablets. At the time, you couldn't find any information on their site outside of the press releases. Nine months later you can pre-order the tablets but you still can't buy them. Launch Tip #2 -- Think about the entire customer experience, not just the product Understand every touch point a person will have with your product, from hearing about it to disposing it. • How do you get information about this product? • What's it like to buy it? • What's it like to unbox it? • What's it like to get it home? • How do they dispose of the product? Where does it go? • What about the preferences and data on the product? Is there a way to seamlessly upgrade within the product and to a new product? You need all of this information to keep customers around for the next iteration of products. You're developing an entire ecosystem of the entire customer experience. Good example: Apple They own every element of the customer ecosystem. Bad example: Every phone company Trying to move data from one handset to another sometimes works, partially works, and also the phone is loaded with crap you don't even want. Launch Tip #3 - Selling consumer products, not technology products Don't think about your product as speeds, feeds, and capacity. Users are going to create a relationship with your product. Make it friendly. One way to do this is to give your products names instead of model numbers. Good example: RIM, today They now call their products The Bold and The Curve. Bad example: RIM in the past and most tech companies Still focused on specs and not on the relationship the product will have with the customer. Funky Business was commissioned by the Volvo Trucks company to launch the new FH Truck through a series of events in some of the most important cities in Romania. Aside from the new product, we also had to mark the company's 10th anniversary and the launch of the new Bucharest-based headquarters. We came up with an emotional, custom-made concept to suit the product and comprise all the brand's messages: "State Of The Art Efficiency". Then we made sure we'd get these messages across through all means possible, from brand movies, VJing, VFX, music, light & venue design to brand experience. Creating The Perfect Ad Copy and Message For Our Product Launch - VLOG #2
Follow the process on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brandonmlucero/ [PRODUCT LAUNCHES NEED THE PERFECT MESSAGE] The most important part of selling online or launching IS NOT your webinar, bonus, offer, video series, or sales page. It's your messaging and copy. You can actually mess up the webinar, sales page, etc and STILL bring in sales if your messaging and copy is done correctly. Our most successful launches were the ones were our messaging and copy was spot on and brought people from an unaware state to a fully aware state. Basically, it brought them from "I don't know I need this" to "I must have this now!" Here are the key things you're message should have: - Be unique. Use numbers when possible. For example, "build audiences faster" doesn't stand out as much as "build audiences 3x faster" does. - Be different. Introduce new ideas, concepts, and names. You can even take current concepts out there, tweak them a little bit and then give them a new name. This separates you from all the other noise out there. For example, "Learn the best FB ads strategy for launching" is what everyone is saying... nothing is different. But, when I take my process of FB ads for launches and call it AD PRIMING now I am creating my own category that no one is talking about. I am being a leader. I am being different. I am creating something people will remember. No one is going to remember "FB ads for launches" because everyone is talking about it. - Be consistent. Remember you are getting people to enter your sales process because of some benefit they want or pain they are trying to avoid. You need to maintain and grow that throughout the sales process. Don't get them to optin for your webinar on "3xing their audience" and then teach them "how to grow your business" or try to sell them on "how to grow your business" stick to the ONE thing they opted in for an keep it throughout the entire sales process or launch. Your ad, webinar title, optin page, sales page should ALL have the same or VERY similar headlines. - Be specific. The more general you are the fewer sales you'll make. In fact, if I said to you "Buy this it will help you grow your business and you'll make more money" or I said "Buy this you will 3x the size of your audience in 60 days and 2x your sales conversions." you're more likely to buy the second one. The first thing you need to know when you're doing a product launch is that you need to have a platform that allows you not only to sell the product but to deliver the product. A simple way to sell the product is using click funnels. A simple way to deliver the product is using Kajabi. Kajabi allows you to deliver a course to people once they buy. Click Funnels allows you to optimize the funnels so you can get more purchases and sales. Technically, Kajabi can do all of that. But I prefer Click Funnels on the front end, and I love using Kajabi on the back end to deliver the course, drip people the content over time. Now that you got the software solutions, what you want to do is create a web page with the offering for your product launch. Use Click Funnels to create a video talking about your product, the price points, what they're going to get for it, and you can just create a script. Create a little quick intro video on Click Funnels. You can do this on your iPhone. You say in this intro video, hey everyone, wanna learn how to grow your YouTube channel? Register for this webinar. I'm going to show you 11 secrets on how to grow your YouTube channel. Once they register, you have a PowerPoint presentation. The PowerPoint presentation is going to be around 45 minutes to an hour. The first 30 minutes you're going to educate them on all these cool crazy YouTube tactics. Don't charge for it. Just give away all the information for free. After you do that, you said, hey, now that you've learned everything, do you want to hear a simpler way to grow your YouTube channel? I showed you all the ways that you can do it on your own, but would you like to learn some of the hacks that I use that speed up the process so that way you don't have to take seven, eight months to get results and you could get results in three months? Usually, people say yes. Then you hook them with a special offer. Normally, if I did one on one YouTube consulting and you went to people in person, you're going to charge five figures. You would end by saying, but, if you want to do this, I have a special offer for you, you can get it now for whatever price. Once you have people are saying yes, yes, yes. Then what you want to do is send them to a page where they can check out. You can do this all on Click Funnels. You can also do this live. You host a live webinar once a month, or you can make an evergreen webinar. If you want to make an evergreen webinar, webinar jam has software called everwebinar. Once you've completed those steps, you can drive traffic to your product launch using YouTube ads or Facebook ads. Facebook ads tend to convert better than YouTube ads. The other strategy for a product launch is to go to all the popular bloggers in your space, contact them and offer to give them 30, 40, 50% of every single sale you drive. Do a joint webinar with them. They'll push your product, and you can generate sales. ConvertKit does a wonderful job of this. Their revenue figures are public. They're doing over ten million a year in revenue. Most of their revenue is driven by affiliates and launches. Another product launch tip is to contact all of the people who clicked on your check out page but didn't buy. You re-market to them with the YouTube and Facebook video that breaks in with what they would get if they purchase. Send them back to the check out page. You'll notice it will be your highest converting ad campaign. That's what we did. It has worked amazingly well. It still works.
