At Dyce near Aberdeen, Her Majesty the Queen presses the button that sends the first North Sea Oil flowing into the Grangemouth Refinery. It marks the fruition of years of research, technology, hard work and grim determination. From the Forties Field by under sea pipeline, a marvel itself in engineering, the oil comes ashore at Cruden Bay. It travels then by underground pipes to the BP Refinery at Grangemouth. To the people of Aberdeen oil has already meant a change in their life style, could it also be the turning point in Britain's economy. Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The Perdido is located in the Perdido fold belt which is a rich discovery of crude oil and natural gas that lies in water that is nearly 8000 feet deep. The platform's peak production will be 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At 267 meters, the Perdido is nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower. An oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, and to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. In many cases, the platform contains facilities to house the workforce as well. From the smallest Perenco Victor platform to the largest Shell Brent platforms, decommissioning in the North Sea will range from as few as 3 years to 20+ years. We expect at least 140 fields will cease production over the next 5 years, with a total of £55 billion (real terms) to be spent on decommissioning the UK Continental Shelf. With as many as 50 fields forecast to cease in 2016 alone, will new investment materialise or will the North Sea enter a new decommissioning phase? http://www.woodmac.com/analysis/mission-decommission-the-north-sea

Offshore platforms are remarkable engineering feats, therefor it is time for the 5 largest offshore platforms of the world! Massive in size, these structures take several years and often many billions of dollars to build — but when complete, they can extract oil and gas from some of the least-accessible spots on the planet. The Mars B/Olympus Platform in the Gulf of Mexico First oil production begun in February 2014 from the Mars B development through Olympus, Shell’s seventh, and largest, floating deep-water platform in the Gulf of Mexico. Combined production from Olympus and Shell’s original Mars platform is expected to deliver an estimated resource base of 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe). The project is also directly investing $5 million dollars in community, social and environmental initiatives with the aim to benefit the communities of the US Gulf Coast, as well as in South Korea, where the hull of the Olympus platform was built. Olympus sailing into the Gulf of Mexico Olympus sailing into the Gulf of Mexico The Hibernia Platform in the Canadian Atlantic Hibernia is an oil field in the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately 315 kilometres (196 mi) east-southeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, in 80 m of water. The production platform Hibernia is the world’s largest oil platform (by weight) and consists of a 37,000 t (41,000 short tons) integrated topsides facility mounted on a 600,000 t (660,000 short tons) gravity base structure. The platform was towed to its final site, and 450,000 t (500,000 short tons) of solid ballast were added to secure it in place. Inside the gravity base structure are storage tanks for 1.2 million barrels (190,000 m3) of crude oil. The Hibernia Platform in the Canadian Atlantic The Hibernia Platform in the Canadian Atlantic The Petronius Platform in the Gulf of Mexico Petronius is a deepwater compliant tower oil platform operated by Chevron Corporation and Marathon Oil in the Gulf of Mexico, 210 km southeast of New Orleans, United States. A compliant piled tower design, it is 609.9 metres (2,001 ft) high, and was arguably the tallest free-standing structure in the world, until surpassed by the Burj Khalifa in 2010, although this claim is disputed since only 75 metres of the platform are above water. The multi-deck topsides are 64 metres by 43 metres by 18.3 metres high and hold 21 well slots, and the entire structure weighs around 43,000 tons. Around 8,000 m3 (50,000 barrels) of oil and 2,000,000 m3 (70 million cubic feet) of natural gas are extracted daily by the platform. The jacket supports topsides weighing 7,500t. The jacket supports topsides weighing 7,500t. The Perdido Platform in the Gulf of Mexico Perdido is the world’s deepest spar, and the second-deepest oil and gas production hub after Shell’s Stones development. Moored in around 2,450 metres (8,000 feet) of water in the US Gulf of Mexico, Perdido started production in 2010, opening up a new frontier in deep-water oil and gas recovery. The Perdido Platform in the Gulf of Mexico The Perdido Platform in the Gulf of Mexico The Berkut Platform in the Sea of Okhotsk on the Russian Pacific Coast Russia’s Rosneft and America’s ExxonMobil have launched a unique drilling platform in the Okhotsk Sea in Russia’s Far East. The world’s most powerful rig can drill within the radius of at least 7 kilometers. The drilling platform can withstand a 9 magnitude earthquake, waves of up to 18 meters and temperatures down to minus 44 degrees Celsius, Rosneft President Igor Sechin said. Berkut can also withstand floating ice up to two meters thick and has an autonomous power supply system. It has the largest superstructure on any rig. Weighing 200,000 tons it can drill a total of 45 wells. The platform is located 25 km offshore in waters up 35 meters deep. The drilling will be performed by means of a marine rig, which allows all-year-round drilling of wells. http://ttalents.com/5-largest-offshore-platforms/

More than 100 potentially lethal oil and gas spills took place on rigs in the North Sea in 2009 and 2010. Serious spills of oil and gas from North Sea platforms are occurring at the rate of one a week, undermining oil companies' claims to be doing everything possible to improve the safety of rigs. GE Oil & Gas will supply three customized aeroderivative gas turbine-generator modules to provide reliable electric power for a new Chevron floating production unit that will produce oil and gas from the Jack and St. Malo fields in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 280 miles south of New Orleans and at a water depth of approximately 7,000 feet.

North Sea Oil is a fascinating board game written in 1974. http://www.historygamer.com/2010/06/19/north-sea-oil-board-game/ In North Sea Oil you prospect for "concessions" to be allowed to drill for oil. All players are paying money to find out how much oil they can drill for per concession and players bid for the right to be able to drill. However you start the game with no money! Thats right all players must borrow to fund their activities, and although each player may borrow lots of money (up to $5 million), various governments will be charging anything from 5 to 20% interest per turn. Large deposit concessions may be sold usually for a healthy (and instant) profit or kept for a potential huge payout per turn. The payout depends upon the price of oil per barrel, the weather and the revenue tax imposed by the government. So this is a tactically rich game and if you are into bidding games this rates right up there with the best of them in my opinion.

Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE:RDS.A) is trying to stop an oil spill leak in the North Sea. In the first phase of the operation to shut down the leak, engineers have lowered five giant concrete "blankets" on to a stretch of pipeline to place it back on the seabed after it lifted 4 feet off the sea floor. Work is ongoing to lay concrete blankets to secure the pipeline, Shell spokesman Steve Harris said. "First, we have to make a risk assessment ... to make sure that we can find a safe way to shut it off. We expect the result of the risk assessment very quickly and then divers will go down 300 feet (90 meters) and turn off the remaining amount of oil that is leaking into the sea." Nearly 1,300 barrels of oil has leaked from its Gannet Alpha platform since August 12. Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE:RDS.A) has a potential upside of 32.6% based on a current price of $63.21 and an average consensus analyst price target of $83.83.

While many parts of the world are struggling from catastrophic effects of climate change, Russia is looking to capitalize on it, with the Kremlin driving a narrative that touts the economic benefits. Like more and faster access to petroleum and mineral reserves that were previously unreachable. The Northern Sea Passage, a legendary shipping lane along Russia’s Arctic coastline, has been largely inaccessible for part of the year because of dense sea ice. But now, that ice is melting, opening up a new trade route for Russia's cargo ships. Russian oil companies are already betting big on the new reserves they hope to find in the Russian Arctic, and other industries — like mining — are ramping up production since they now have faster shipping routes to many ports. “The problem of climate change is actually the problem of adaptation to climate change. This is not a tragedy,” said Nobel Prize-winning climatologist Oleg Anisimov. “Certainly some places will become unlivable, but other areas are places that will become more livable.” But the Russian people seem unaware, or unconcerned, about the environmental impacts of these climate change-related activities, like pollution from the booming factories, and wildfires in the North that destroyed million of acres of forest in a major tourism area. VICE’s Gianna Toboni visited Russia's Arctic to see just how big the country is betting on climate change.
