Oil spill is one type of pollution of sea water due to human activities.oil spill is nothing but leakage or flow of liquid petroleum hydrocarbons from containers to the surface of water. Oil spill affects the aquatic animals, palnts and even also birds. Oil spill form a oil coat on the body surface of animals and on the feathers of bird. Oil spill restricts the movement of animals and prevent the entry of sunlight in to the sea water. Birds cannot fly due to this oil coat on their feathers. So we should take preventive measures to control oil spills and also to save aquatic organisms.

Oil Spills in the Ocean and Oil Pollution - Seas are no longer water!! This video is an introduction on Oil Spills in the ocean, water pollution by ships, oil pollution, its impact, crude oil pollution, skimming and cleaning processes, oil spill and resultant danger in ecosystem and more. You can view complete video of Oil Spills - Seas are no longer water!! on http://www.video.marinebiztv.com/videos.php?video=MjYz&key=search&k=b2lsIHNwaWxscw== Here you will find a darker side of the sea that introduces us to an oily and the most deadly issue, Oil Spill in the ocean. Even during these modern days, when ships are equipped with the advanced technological devices and when in-numerous people depend on coastal areas; oil spill continues to be a major threat to the marine environment. Most man-made oil pollution comes from land-based activities but unfortunately public focuses more on seagoing oil tankers. Heavier crude oil of less toxicity remain on the water surface much longer as oil is lighter than water and does not decompose, as it is also flammable oil spills can usually fuel ocean fires.

Protecting Sea Turtles from the BP Oil Spill

04:20
ACI 2011 AWARD WINNING VIDEO. When the waters of the Gulf of Mexico were threatened by the Deepwater Horizon Spill last spring, FWC and its partners acted quickly. Biologists and rescue boats went out daily in search of impacted sea turtles. 130 visibly oiled turtles were found. Spotters stood on the boats fishing towers while staff used handheld nets to reach the turtles. Once aboard, the turtles were assessed, measured, weighed, photographed, tagged and samples were taken. Each site a turtle was found was recorded by GPS. Turtles not impacted were returned to the water while those impacted were brought to Gulf World in Panama City, FL. At this location they were given primary care until they were deemed stable and medically cleared to move to a new facility at Sea World. At Sea World, impacted turtles were completely rehabbed until they could be released back into the Gulf. On August 18, 2010 23 Kemp's Ridley's were releases in Cedar Key, FL. As a secondary precaution, FWC staff decided to move entire clutches of nests on the Gulf beaches. Each clutch has 45-50 eggs. These eggs were late in the incubation period where there gender was already determined and the magnetic cues that help turtles return to their beach of birth hopefully was already imprinted. Coolers were then taken to a holding area where they waited for Fed Ex trucks to take them to their next location at Kennedy Space Center in Port Canaveral, FL. These trucks were specially outfitted for this travel. The Kennedy Space Center offered climate controlled storage facility. Coolers were monitored and as hatchling's emerged they were released into the oil free waters of the Atlantic Ocean. More than 13,000 hatchling's were released. This video received a second place award in 2011 from the Association for Conservation Information.

Gulf Oil Spill Effects On Wildlife

05:08
http://facebook.com/ScienceReason ... What are and will be the effects of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill on the wildlife in the area? --- Please SUBSCRIBE to Science & Reason: • http://www.youtube.com/Best0fScience • http://www.youtube.com/ScienceTV • http://www.youtube.com/FFreeThinker • http://www.youtube.com/RationalHumanism --- Scientists to study impact of gulf oil spill on marine food webs Shells from oysters, clams, and periwinkles hold clues about the ways and rates at which harmful compounds from the spill are being incorporated into the Gulf's marine food web. New reports are surfacing every day about the immediate impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on Gulf Coast wildlife, especially as the oil reaches the sensitive marshlands along the coast. But how will these communities be affected over time? Scientists currently know very little about how long it takes for the hydrocarbons and heavy metals in crude oil to work their way through marine food webs. To address this issue, California Academy of Sciences researcher Peter Roopnarine is working with Laurie Anderson from Louisiana State University and David Goodwin from Denison University to collect and analyze three different types of mollusks from the Gulf Coast. These animals are continually building their shells, and if contaminants are present in their environment, they can incorporate those compounds into their shells. Roopnarine and his colleagues will study growth rings in the shells - much like scientists would study tree rings - to determine how quickly harmful compounds from the oil become incorporated into the animals' homemade armor. They will also sample tissues from the animals over the next four months to test for hydrocarbons, and will measure changes in growth rate and survivorship. In addition to its value in informing conservation and policy decisions, this research will have direct implications for the region's commercial oyster fisheries. • http://www.calacademy.org/sciencetoday/ • http://www.calacademy.org/newsroom/releases/2010/roopnarine_oil_spill.php --- NASA Satellites' View of Gulf Oil Spill Over Time Two NASA satellites are capturing images of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which began April 20, 2010, with the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. How your split ends can help clean oil spills

Hair isn’t just for top knots; it can protect the ocean too. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO While oil spills have declined over the years, they still happen, and when they do, it can be devastating to the environment. One natural way to help contain oil spills is through the use of hair booms and hair mats. Hair is a naturally hydrophobic and biosorbent, which means, it repels water and can collect heavy metals and other contaminants, like oil. The more popular methods to contain oil spills use synthetic materials and chemicals, which can be costly and just as dangerous to environment. So, it’s worth exploring eco-friendly ways to clean up the ocean and other waterways. Besides seabirds and wetlands' wildlife, the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico is also threatening the world's most endangered sea turtles. The Kemp's Ridley Turtle has been making a comeback in recent years with the help of conservationists. But its migratory path takes it right through the polluted Gulf. Al Jazeera's Franc Contreras reports from Mexico's northeastern Gulf Coast.

Oil-Degrading Bacteria on the Sea Bed | Tomorrow Today

The oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has given researcher Antje Boetius a unique opportunity: the microbiologist from Bremen is studying a special kind of oil-eating bacteria that live on the sea bed and consume the crude oil that lands there.Boetius is trying to find out how these bacteria break down the oil - and whether she can increase their appetite. She hopes to use her research to clean bodies of water contaminated by man-made spills.

The Magnetic Wand That Cleans Oil Spills: Upgrade

11:21
Oil spills are an unavoidable part of our future on this planet. Until we no longer have to rely on the messy stuff, we will still have to pump oil and ship it around the world, and drilling and shipping inevitably means spills. In this season of Upgrade, we head out to Fermilab, the nation's premier particle physics laboratory, to talk to Arden Warner. Warner, whose day job as a physicist consists of colliding high speed particles together, thought of a unique way to clean up oil spills—using magnets. Warner said he figured there had to be a way to organically magnetize spilled oil, which could then be magnetically collected. He showed us how to do this by adding the naturally-occurring magnetic mineral magnetite to spilled oil, which allows that oil to more easily be manipulated and captured than by other methods. We also take a look at how he has implemented these simple principles into an electromagnetic boom that could be used to change the future of oil spill recovery.
