Working with dates in Oracle PLSQL.

23:34
Dates in Oracle PL SQL is definitely the most powerful among all other databases. It gives us full flexibility to manipulate it of our choice, whether you are calculating days, months or year, printing date and time in various format. Useful date functions add_months, months_between, last_day, next_day and to_char helps us a lot in handling date time in our pl sql programming.

Oracle TO_DATE Function Explained with Examples

06:14
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-to_date/ The Oracle TO_DATE function is one of the most useful conversion functions in Oracle. It can be a little confusing though. The TO_DATE function is used to convert a character value to a date value. You can use it to convert a string that is in the format of a date, into a date data type. Why would you use this? Converting a character to a date is helpful if you want to insert a date into a column in a table. Being specific about the format (explicit) is better than assuming the conversion will be done for you (implicit). This TO_DATE function only converts to a DATE data type. If you want to convert to the other datetime data types, you’ll have to use other functions such as TO_TIMESTAMP or TO_TIMESTAMP_TZ. The syntax for this function is: TO_DATE(charvalue [, format_mask [, nls_date_language]]) The parameters for this function are: Charvalue: This is the character value that you want to convert to a date. It’s the main input of the function. Format_mask: This is the format that the input value, the charvalue, is in. This is used to help convert your character value into a date, as your character may be in a different format to the default. Nls_date_language: this is used to determine how the output is displayed. For more information about the Oracle TO_DATE function, including all of the SQL shown in this video and the examples, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-to_date/

Oracle MONTHS_BETWEEN Function

02:17
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-months_between/ The Oracle MONTHS_BETWEEN function allows you to find the number of months between two dates. You can enter two dates and the function returns the difference. This function is often used as part of other calculations. Sometimes you’ll want to know the difference between two dates to perform other functions. The syntax of the MONTHS_BETWEEN function is: MONTHS_BETWEEN(date1, date2) What do these two parameters mean? The function performs date1 minus date2. So, if date1 is larger, the result is positive. If date2 is larger, then the result is negative. What data type is returned? It depends on the values you provide. If the dates are both on the same day of the month (e.g. both on the 10th of the month), then the result is an integer or whole number. If not, then the result will be a decimal value. For more information on the MONTHS_BETWEEN function, including the code used in this video and examples, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-months_between/

MySQL 33 - Datetime, Date, Time Data Types

06:40
Next up on our MySQL to-do list is to learn about storing dates and times. There are various data types in MySQL for storing dates and times. It seems MySQL and databases likes to break everything up into multiple data types to make things more organized at the consequence of being confusing and annoying. This video is going to be talking about the DATETIME, DATE, and TIME data types. These are all used to store, you guessed it, dates and times. The one you choose depends on your needs. If you just need dates, choose DATE. If you just need times, choose TIME, if you need both stored together, choose DATETIME. Now you set a column one of these data types whenever you want every row for this field to have some sort of date, time or both…but how exactly is the data formatted? This requires us to understand some convention. For example, in the USA at least, if you have something like 4:30AM, by convention you know the hour is 4 and the minutes are 30. But this is just an agreed upon convention. MySQL has its own convention…For example 2017-02-02. The first thing is the year, the second is the month, and the third is the day. That is for the DATE. The convention for time is 22:54:30. The first is the hour (military time), the second is the minute, and the third is the seconds. Lastly, there can actually be fractions of seconds…up to microseconds! .123456. To use fractional seconds though you must specify to MySQL the precision of the TIME or DATETIME when you create it, for example DATETIME(6) would allow microsecond precision. How do you actually give a date to MySQL? By that I mean let's say you have a table with a column of DATETIME(6), and you want to give a value for that column, how do you format it? It's quoted. For example: '2017-02-02 22:54:30.333333' MySQL interprets this as a DATETIME. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Support me! http://www.patreon.com/calebcurry Subscribe to my newsletter: http://bit.ly/JoinCCNewsletter Donate!: http://bit.ly/DonateCTVM2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Additional Links~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More content: http://CalebCurry.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CalebTheVideoMaker Google+: https://plus.google.com/+CalebTheVideoMaker2 Twitter: http://twitter.com/calebCurry Amazing Web Hosting - http://bit.ly/ccbluehost (The best web hosting for a cheap price!)

Should I Learn Oracle or SQL Server?

02:17
Should I learn Oracle or SQL Server? While Oracle DBA certification pays well, the classes and getting a practice version of Oracle is expensive. I heard you could get versions of SQL Server for free. Part of it depends on the software developers you're working with. Use SQL Server if you're working with Microsoft's .Net, whereas Java developers are more likely to use Oracle. I didn't know that SQL Server was a Microsoft brand. So if you'll be working on MS servers and MS databases, you need to learn the SQL server. Which one is better for my career? There are typically more MS SQL jobs, but the Oracle jobs pay more. Oracle doesn't have as many jobs, but you have less competition. Those who didn't join the Microsoft cult pay a price for it. Which one is harder to learn? Oracle is rather complex, whereas MS SQL Server is simpler because it has a good graphical user interface. It's nice to hear that Microsoft made at least one good user interface. They usually put out crap, but once in a while, there's a good one. I've heard MySQL is more popular. Only because of the so called popularity of Microsoft. Oracle is the heavyweight database tool. Which relational database is better? MySQL works with almost any web-based application. Oracle is more stable, secure and scalable for enterprise wide applications. I'm glad to know that the big data that is running the world isn't all beholden to Bill Gates. No, but most PCs that generate the data still are. It sounds like I need to learn Oracle. Fortunately, you can learn Oracle inside and out and a little MS SQL and do almost any database admin job you'd like. You're guaranteed to get dates if you can proudly announce you have stable, well paying employment. It's like saying you're a musician, artist and athlete at once. Girls will just be happy if she doesn't have to pay for the date these days.

Difference between rows and range

05:52
range vs rows in sql server difference between rows clause and range clause in sql server range clause vs rows clause in sql server sql server running total query running total example in sql server In this video we will discuss the difference between rows and range in SQL Server. This is continuation to Part 116. Please watch Part 116 from SQL Server tutorial before proceeding. Let us understand the difference with an example. We will use the following Employees table in this demo. SQL Script to create the Employees table Create Table Employees ( Id int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Salary int ) Go Insert Into Employees Values (1, 'Mark', 1000) Insert Into Employees Values (2, 'John', 2000) Insert Into Employees Values (3, 'Pam', 3000) Insert Into Employees Values (4, 'Sara', 4000) Insert Into Employees Values (5, 'Todd', 5000) Go Calculate the running total of Salary and display it against every employee row The following query calculates the running total. We have not specified an explicit value for ROWS or RANGE clause. SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees So the above query is using the default value which is RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW This means the above query can be re-written using an explicit value for ROWS or RANGE clause as shown below. SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees We can also achieve the same result, by replacing RANGE with ROWS SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees What is the difference between ROWS and RANGE To understand the difference we need some duplicate values for the Salary column in the Employees table. Execute the following UPDATE script to introduce duplicate values in the Salary column Update Employees set Salary = 1000 where Id = 2 Update Employees set Salary = 3000 where Id = 4 Go Now execute the following query. Notice that we get the running total as expected. SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees The following query uses RANGE instead of ROWS SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees Notice we don't get the running total as expected. So, the main difference between ROWS and RANGE is in the way duplicate rows are treated. ROWS treat duplicates as distinct values, where as RANGE treats them as a single entity. All together side by side. The following query shows how running total changes 1. When no value is specified for ROWS or RANGE clause 2. When RANGE clause is used explicitly with it's default value 3. When ROWS clause is used instead of RANGE clause SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary) AS [Default], SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS [Range], SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS [Rows] FROM Employees Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/difference-between-rows-and-range.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/difference-between-rows-and-range_8.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

SQL Date Comparison - How to filter Datetime in SQL Server - SQL Training Online

08:41
http://www.sqltrainingonline.com SQL Date Comparison - How to filter Datetime in SQL Server - SQL Training Online In this video, I show you how to do a SQL Date Comparison in SQL Server when your Datetime has an actual time in it. I also include the latest trick that will make this easier if you are using SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2012. How do you compare a Datetime in SQL Server? A SQL Datetime stores both Date and Time. So when you are filtering using the SQL Where clause, you have to know if you Datetime is storing the time also. Let's take a look at the employee table in SQL Training Online Simple DB The column we are looking at is the hire date. I want to go after the person who was hired on February, 22 2005. So, I use the following SQL. select * from employee where hire_date='02/22/2005' Now, this works because we don't have any times stored in this column. But, if I change the record from 2005-02-22 00:00:00.000 to 2005-02-22 08:22:25.000 and rerun the query, you see that I don't get any results. That is because the value of 02/22/2005 is really 2005-02-22 00:00:00.000 and I just changed the hire_date to include a time other than 00:00:00.000. So, I have to tweak my query to use a greater than and less than sign. This works. But, to really understand what is going on, let me show you what SQL Server really sees. There are other ways, and in this StackOverflow article you can read more about these other ways. But, I want to point out a few. If you are working in SQL Server 2005 or earlier, the following is supposed to be the fastest performing way to do this. select datediff(dd,0, hire_date),* from employee where dateadd(dd,0, datediff(dd,0, hire_date)) = '2005-02-22' But, if you are working in SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2012, they have introduced an actual Date datatype that doesn't include the Time portion. Since this is the case, you can use the CAST function to remove the time from the Datetime. Here is the SQL to do that. select * from employee where CAST(hire_date AS Date) = '2005-02-22' And that's it. If you enjoy the video, please give it a like, comment, or subscribe to my channel. Oracle DB Vs MySQL for Enterprise DataBase Deployments

08:54
Oracle DB is big, and expensive, but it brings a lot to the "table" when compared with MySQL. MySQL has limited ability to audit. MySQL's security is unsophisticated. There are no groups or roles, no ability to deny a privilege (you can only grant privileges). A user who logs in with the same username and password from different network addresses may be treated as a completely separate user. There is no built-in encryption comparable to Oracle. MySQL's Authentication is built-in. There is no LDAP, Active Directory, or other external authentication capability. MySQL has no MPP (massively parallel processing ) support. Unlike Oracle MySQL has no fractional-second storage type for times, dates, or intervals. There is no RAC (Real Application Cluster) support in My SQL, and no failover or server promotion either. These are strong features in Oracle MySQL's number of joins per query is limited to 61. Oracle's limit is much larger. MySQL Replication is asynchronous and has many limitations and edge cases. For example, it is single-threaded, so a powerful slave can find it hard to replicate fast enough to keep up with a less powerful master.

Oracle TO_TIMESTAMP_TZ Function

01:43
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-timezone-functions/ The Oracle TO_TIMESTAMP_TZ function can be confusing, but we’ll explain it in this video. This function allows you to convert a string value into a TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE value. A TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE value is a type of DATE, but has a few components: - A date, including day, month, and year - A time, including hours, minutes, and seconds - A time zone, which is the number of hours and minutes difference from GMT This is a useful data type because it allows you to store dates in different time zones, and allow users in other time zones to see the data in a way that makes sense to them. The time zone part is the difference from GMT. This means that a “+7:00” is 7 hours ahead of GMT (e.g. Bangkok) and “-5:00” is 5 hours behind GMT (e.g. US Eastern Standard Time). The syntax of the TO_TIMESTAMP_TZ function is: TO_TIMESTAMP_TZ ( input_string [, format_mask] [, nls_param] ) The input_string parameter is the string you want to convert. The format_mask is where you specify the format of the input_string parameter. This is so you can specify the input_string in a variety of formats, and just use this format_mask to indicate which format it is in. The nls_param parameter is another optional parameter, and allows you to specify the returning language of the month and day names. For more information on the Oracle TO_TIMESTAMP_TZ function, including the SQL used in this video, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-timezone-functions/

Oracle SQL Tutorial 23 - Intro to Data Types

05:03
Every column within a table has to be given what is known as a datatype. A data type is a fairly simple concept when you dissect the word. It is literally the type of data. Why do we use types, though? The biggest benefit is so that Oracle knows how to interpret and work with our data. It also makes the database better at rejecting incorrect data. If we had to concept of a data type, there would be a lot more work involved in forcing data to be of the right format. It would also be harder for us to get the database to treat the data in the correct way. In addition to this, a database can optimize storage and performance for a column if everything is of the same data type. Because of this, each column can only support one data type. There are numerous different data types in Oracle and it helps us if we categorize them. The first types of datatypes we should learn about are: String, Numeric, Temporal Now, there are few more categories we could make, but these are the main ones. We will worry about the other ones another day as I am only introducing the topic. A string data type is anything within quotes. Most databases use single quotes for string data. Inside of the quotes can be any number of characters. What is a character? Think of any letter, number, or symbol you can type. Some people call these letters, numbers, and symbols alphanumeric. Numeric data type includes only numbers. These data types are often used for data that you plan on using for mathematical calculations. Temporal data types are data types that are used for dates and times. Now, each data type is probably going to have some options you'll need to worry about, but one that comes up with every data type is storage. The reason we need to consider storage is because we may end up with millions of rows in a table and the difference between a few bytes for each row will make a huge difference when we look at the whole picture. When a data type gives you the option of size, you will want to a size that will be able to hold what you need, but nothing more. In the upcoming videos we are going to discuss the available data types in more detail. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Support me! http://www.patreon.com/calebcurry Subscribe to my newsletter: http://bit.ly/JoinCCNewsletter Donate!: http://bit.ly/DonateCTVM2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Additional Links~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More content: http://CalebCurry.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CalebTheVideoMaker Google+: https://plus.google.com/+CalebTheVideoMaker2 Twitter: http://twitter.com/calebCurry Amazing Web Hosting - http://bit.ly/ccbluehost (The best web hosting for a cheap price!)
