JDBC Provider and Data Source Configuration for DB2 v9 in WAS v7

08:05
This demonstration video will cover JDBC provider and Data Source configuration for DB2 v9 in WAS v7. The motivation for this video was to complete the series on SSL configuration. The first part was a tech talk entitled End-to-End SSL Configuration for IHS v7, WAS v7, and DB2 v9. In that tech talk two assumptions were made before you could enable End-to-End SSL configuration. One was that SSL was configured on DB2 and the second that you configured JDBC Provider and Data Source. This video will demonstrate the later.

In last video we saw how to configure database on WebSphere message broker or IBM integration bus. In this video we will go forward and write actual code to connect to oracle database to fetch data. We will be sending request with username in it and then based on username we will fetch that users data from oracle database. Service URL http://localhost:7080/services/getUserDetails Request { "username":"user1" } Response { "person_id": 1, "given_name": "Dave", "family_name": "Badger", "title": "Mr", "birth_date": "1960-05-01 00:00:00", "username": "user1" } Dummy Data for Connecting to Database using WMB or IIB Demo CREATE TABLE people ( person_id INTEGER NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, user_name VARCHAR2(100) NOT NULL, given_name VARCHAR2(100) NOT NULL, family_name VARCHAR2(100) NOT NULL, title VARCHAR2(20), birth_date DATE ); INSERT INTO people VALUES (1, 'user1','Dave', 'Badger', 'Mr', date'1960-05-01'); commit; SELECT * FROM people;

Lesson - 27 : JDBC - Connection pooling in JDBC

15:55
Why DataSource interface is introduced If a java program wants to obtain a connection with a database then there are two options for the java program 1. A java program can use DriverManager class of java.sql package to obtain a connection. 2. A java program can use DataSource interface of java.sql package to obtain a connection with a database. The following are the major drawbacks of DriverManager class 1. DriverManager class takes atleast three or four seconds of time to open database connection in a network so it decreases the burden on or performance of java application. 2. To obtain a connection using DriverManager a programmer has to remember driver class name it's url and username, password so it increase the burden on a programmer. 3. DriverManager class opens a separate connection for each client so number of connections on database server will be increased so it's performance is decrease. 4. DriverManager opens non reusable connections with a database so it increase burden on database server. Why connection pooling: When we use driver manager or datasource the connection opened with a datasource is a non reusable. For each client if a new connection is opened then burden on database server will be increase so to reduce the burden on database server we use connection pooling. What is connection pooling: Connection pooling is a mechanism which makes a database connection as a reusable for more than one client so burden on a database server will be reduced. A connection pooling makes database connections as reusable. A connection pool contains set of pooled connections(reusable connections). How connection pooling works: 1. A server administrator prepares a connection pool with a setoff connections and also a mediator object as DataSource object to access the pool. 2. An administrator stores DataSource object into JNDI registry (java naming directory interface) . 3. A java application reads DataSource object from JNDI registry andasks for a connection from a pool. 4. A DataSource object takes a connection from a pool and creates a proxy or logical connection do it and then sends the proxy connection to java program. 5. When a java program closes proxy connection the DataSource will done real connection back to the pool.

connection pool in weblogic server

03:47
JDBC Connection Pooling JDBC connection pooling is conceptually similar to any other form of object pooling. Database connections are often expensive to create because of the overhead of establishing a network connection and initializing a database connection session in the back end database. In turn, connection session initialization often requires time consuming processing to perform user authentication, establish transactional contexts and establish other aspects of the session that are required for subsequent database usage. Additionally, the database's ongoing management of all of its connection sessions can impose a major limiting factor on the scalability of your application. Valuable database resources such as locks, memory, cursors, transaction logs, statement handles and temporary tables all tend to increase based on the number of concurrent connection sessions. All in all, JDBC database connections are both expensive to initially create and then maintain over time. Therefore, as we shall see, they are an ideal resource to pool. If your application runs within a J2EE environment and acquires JDBC connections from an appserver defined datasource then your application is probably already using connection pooling. This fact also illustrates an important characteristic of a best practices pooling implementation -- your application is not even aware it's using it! Your J2EE application simply acquires JDBC connections from the datasource, does some work on the connection then closes the connection. Your application's use of connection pooling is transparent. The characteristics of the connection pool can be tweaked and tuned by your appserver's administrator without the application ever needing to know. If your application is not J2EE based then you may need to investigate using a standalone connection pool manager. Connection pool implementations are available from JDBC driver vendors and a number of other sources.
