Plastic may have killed 500 sea lions found dead on Peruvian beach
Some 500 dead sea lions were discovered decomposing on a beach, 250 miles north of the Peruvian capital, Lima, possibly after ingesting massive amounts of plastic polluting the waters, according to a report by Salon. While the local governor, however, accused fishermen, who compete with the animals for shellfish, of having poisoned them, investigators are looking into possible explainations, such as diseases. Marine animals often confuse plastic bags and garbage for prey and ingest them. According to the Sea Turtle Foundation, plastic debris is to blame for the deaths of a million birds and 100,000 marine mammals each year. The North Pacific Gyre, one of the world’s largest ocean gyres, is often referred to as the Pacific trash vortex, due to high concentrations of floating plastic debris. Due to rotational currents, trash is captured from across the Pacific Ocean, including coastal waters off North America and Japan, and then is gradually moved towards the North Pacific Gyre’s center, where it becomes trapped. The vortex is made of some 100 million tons of plastic, including large objects or disintegrated objects and particles. About half of them float atop the ocean’s surface, while the remaining, heavier half, can be found in the water column below it or along the bottom of the ocean. The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that worldwide, each square mile of ocean water contains 46,000 pieces of garbage. Plastic does not biodegrade, meaning it does not break down into natural elements. Rather, it photodegrades, gradually splitting into small, tiny particles. When small enough, it can be ingested by aquatic organisms, and therefore is able to enter the food chain. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. A new life for poisoned sea lions
Fourteen of seventeen sea lions injured in a chlorine attack have returned to the Pacific Ocean after receiving a clean bill of health. The sea lions flopped joyously from the beach to the surf Tuesday (June 02), after being released by the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, an animal rescue group based in Laguna Beach, California. The sea lions were poisoned when an unknown assailant dumped chlorine in their holding facility on April 27. Police are still investigating the crime. Although three sea lions injured by the chlorine are still recovering, Kirsten Sedlick of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center says that there is a sense of accomplishment among her peers for helping return the animals to their natural habitat. "It's nice to know that all of our hard work and our dedication has paid off, and to see them go home, and see them eagerly go home, we couldn't ask for anything better," says Sedlick. Sedlick said that even before the chlorine attack on the sea lions, the Mammal Center's resources were already stretched thin, with 2015 being a record year for sea lion rescues. "So, today we released 14 of our California sea lion patients. So far this year, in 2015, it's been an historical year. We've rescued over 500 California sea lions, and so far, in house, releasing these 14, we have 120 still left in house," she says. Experts suspect that pollution of the sea lions' habitat has caused many of the issues sickening the mammals and causing them to wash ashore. The Complicated Relationship Between Humans and Endangered Sea Lions in the Galápagos
On the small island of San Cristóbal in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, about 8,000 people and 4,000 endemic Galápagos Sea Lions coexist. For decades, the groups lived together peacefully, but starting in the 1970s, tourism to the Galápagos increased, causing local populations to boom to meet the new demand and putting pressure on the ever-scarce land.

People free sea lion entangled in garbage
On March 10, 2014, a sea lion was disentangled with help from Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre and Fisheries and Oceans Canada staff. Acting on reports of a sea lion with garbage around its neck, the team ventured into Fanny Bay, north of Nanaimo on the west coast of Vancouver Island. They came across a Steller sea lion that had a large scar from when it was previously entangled, but they did not find the sea lion in question. The team eventually came across another sea lion at the other end of the bay, this time a young male California sea lion, that had garbage stuck around its neck. The Aquarium's veterinarian, Dr. Martin Haulena, tranquilized it before cutting the plastic strap off and treating the wound. The Vancouver Aquarium runs the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre where it treats "inpatients." It also works cooperatively with other organizations to rescue and treat animals in the ocean. Many thanks to Canadian Wildlife Federation for their support on this project. Find out more: http://www.vanaqua.org/mmr Donate: vanaqua.org/donate The Vancouver Aquarium is a self-supporting, non-profit society. It does not receive ongoing funds to provide around-the-clock care for rescued and rehabilitated animals.

Rescued and Rehabilitated Sea Lions Return to the Ocean
We watched 2 sea lions who had been rescued in December and rehabilitated by Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach, CA get released back into the wild at Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach, CA this morning. Both were extremely under weight when they were rescued, but as you can see they were at a healthy weight when they were released today. It was so wonderful to watch. They ran straight into the ocean and swam out together frolicking and even came out of the water and kissed each other! It was beautiful.

Cute Fat Sea Lion Yawning!
Cute Fat Sea Lion Yawning! Sea lions are in a scientific group of animals called pinnipeds, which means "wing foot" or "feather foot.” They live along the coastlines and islands of the Pacific Ocean. Sea Lion has a small earflap on each side of its head while Seals just have a tiny opening for their ears, and the earflaps are turned with the opening downward to prevent water enter the ears. The average life spin of Sea Lion is 20-30 years. Steller's sea lion is the largest Sea Lion, it can weigh 660 Ib and grow to a length of 3.0 m. At a single feeding, Sea Lion can consume 15–35 lb food.

Yet Another Sea Lion With Plastic Around Neck - Raw Video
Entangled sea lions are dying a slow and painful death. Plastic packing straps and netting cut into their skin and flesh. On this day, Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre staff, under the supervision of Vancouver Aquarium veterinarian Dr. Martin Haulena, successfully disentangle a female Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus). They tranquilize, disentangle and tag the animal before administering a reversal to wake her up. Vancouver Aquarium associate researcher Wendy Szaniszlo (in red) monitors Steller sea lions on the west coast of Vancouver Island and knows all too well just how bad the problem is. There are an estimated 400 entangled animals in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve alone. The team sees seven entangled animals. Today, they can help just one.
