What makes a truly great logo

04:45
Here's how a simple mark ends up meaning something big as a great logo. Joe Posner, and Michael Bierut (designer of the Hillary Clinton logo) explain. For more from Michael Bierut on graphic design, check out his book "How to use graphic design to sell things, explain things, make things look better, make people laugh, cry, and (every once in a while) change the world": http://www.amazon.com/How-Michael-Bierut/dp/0062413902 Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO About once a month, there's a new logo to fight about on the internet. The biggest one in recent memory was the highly controversial Hillary Clinton logo, which did not escape scrutiny from Vox.com either. But as a designer/filmmaker, something about these repeated discussions struck me as missing the point on what makes logos tick. It often has little to do with the subjective musings. So I called up Michael Bierut, the designer of that Hillary Clinton logo and countless others. He sat down with me and helped explain the elements of a great logo in the video above. Eileen Fisher’s Timeless Fashion Design

“A lot of people don't know that the fashion industry is one of the worst polluters in the world,” says Eileen Fisher. In a video filmed at the 2018 Aspen Ideas Festival, in June, Fisher explains how the fashion industry employs one in six people worldwide. “There's a huge opportunity to actually clean up the industry and clean up the planet because so much work is done there,” she adds. Fisher goes on to describe how her philosophy of clothing design, which she describes as “simple” and “circular,” lends itself to sustainability.

Legendary fashion designer on his career, philosophy of fashion and love of New York

04:37
JEAN PAUL GAULTIER REFLECTS ON HIS GOOD FORTUNE As a traveling tribute to his life's work opens at the Brooklyn Museum, Jean Paul Gaultier couldn't be happier. "Since the beginning I am doing the things that I love, dream to do, you know, since I am a child," said the French fashion designer. "I am doing my game which is going on, going on, and I play and I have fun and I have joy to do it. And now it's going on, even now we're doing an exhibition, for me it's like, you know, the game is beautiful. It asks (for) a lot of work, but I love that, so it's my passion, so I am lucky. I have not to complain. I have to say that I am very happy about that." "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk" is open to the public at the Brooklyn Museum. Gaultier recalled the first time he ever visited New York City in the 1960's. "My first impression was arriving by the plane at night, so it was all with the lights. And we passed over all of Manhattan and Brooklyn and Queens, etc. so we have a total view by plane, you know, like that. It was truly fantastic and I realized what a jewel it was and how beautiful it was. So I fell in love since that moment with all Manhattan and all around. After I went and I went even to holiday here and there, and yeah." The 61-year-old designer continues to create haute couture runway shows and remains a favorite with rock stars. He considers it his job to keep up with latest trends. "Fashion is supposed to go on with life and what's happening in society. We are only the reflection of what's happening, you know? Economically, artistically, in society, you know, revolution, evolution. We are supposed to feel all that only to, so it's always arriving new things, so we are supposed to absorb it and make it from that, you know? So, voila!" "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk" features various designs of his famous trouser skirts and corsets - including the cone bra worn by Madonna during her "Blonde Ambition" tour. New to the exhibit in Brooklyn is a section dedicated to other Gaultier muses. There's the fishnet-covered floral gown made for model Crystal Renn, the bronze beaded catsuit worn by for Naomi Campbell and the floral tulle leotard modeled by singer Beth Ditto. Also on display is the Amy Winehouse-inspired gown that male model Andrej Pejic wore in a 2012 couture show. The exhibit is now open to the public. For more information, visit brooklynmuseum.org. Karl Lagerfeld - German fashion designer and icon | DW Documentary

42:26
The German-born designer Karl Lagerfeld has died at the age of 85. He was a designer, an artist and a fashion icon. For this sad occasion we recommend a portrait DW made in 2014. No living fashion designer, let alone a German one, was as celebrated as Karl Lagerfeld. On September 10, 2018 the man with the trademark ponytail and sunglasses celebrated his 85th birthday. From dawn to late morning, Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel, Fendi and his own signature brand - a combined workload of up to 15 collections a year. A workhorse who never takes breaks or even a vacation, he is also a photographer and filmmaker. His passion for fashion was awakened by a Dior show in Hamburg in 1950. Four years later, at the age of 17, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld recounts his beginnings in the industry, as well as his upper class background and childhood in Schleswig-Holstein. Karl Lagerfeld was greatly influenced by his mother, whom he describes as his personal style icon. Karl Lagerfeld's caustic comments were notorious and dreaded by those at the receiving end. As an artist, Karl Lagerfeld worked in several media, from pictures and photographs to book illustrations and videos. The documentary of 2015 follows Karl Lagerfeld to exhibition openings, during the hectic preparations for his fashion shows, and at photo shoots in Paris as it seeks to uncover the man behind the mask. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Millennial Elegance - Monarh Design by Larisa Lupoiu @ Romanian Fashion Philosophy

08:07
(https://www.facebook.com/doinaspatarusax)
► JUN TAKAHASHI, Undercover's Fashion Designer | An Exclusive Interview with yoox.com

05:00
http://yoox.ly/yooxFashion Undercover takes a varied approach, mixing couture with street style and the punk-rock mentality of Tokyos youth culture. The New Yooxer meets Jun Takahashi, the brands designer and art director, whose philosophy is to make noise, not clothes. Born in 1969, Japan's Jun Takahashi is the indisputable artistic soul behind Undercover, a brand that has been part of the Paris Fashion Week's Calendar since 2002. As an honored guest during the 66th edition of Pitti Immagine Uomo, Jun showed a preview of the Men's 2010 collection and shared his style inspirations with a doll-making event in Florence's Boboli gardens, much to the delight of the fashion public. Using needle and thread to create "beauty and horror", the dolls of Undercover became a kind of stylish laboratory experiment, resulting in a series of lacey creatures named Grace, aptly named for the spontaneous spirit with which they were brought to life. Hybrid creatures that fall somewhere between the feminine and the alien, the realistic and the fantastic, the dolls were a first step in challenging the standard fashion show stereotypes while proposing a new way of representing rock 'n roll spirit behind the Spring/Summer 2010 Collections, and were complemented by a photographic installation by the artist Katsuhide Morimoto. Undercover's mission has always been to emphasize the driving "concept" behind every collection, an exercise in communication that goes beyond any single garment to reveal the greater vision that lies beneath. A vision that would otherwise remain "Undercover". *** yoox.com, established in 2000, is the world's leading lifestyle e-store for multi-brand fashion, design and art. Shopping on yoox.com is all about discovery - an eclectic and playful journey beyond fashion's strict seasonal rules - allowing men and women to express their individuality through timeless and creative style. http://yoox.ly/shopyoox Powered by YOOX Group

Coco Chanel | Fashion Designers

04:23
Watch more Fashion Designers and Fashion Brands videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/500163-Coco-Chanel-Fashion-Designers The founder of the House of Chanel really presents a lot of contradictions. She set a fashion for very simple dressing but she lived surrounded by antiques. The founder of the House of Chanel really presents a lot of contradictions. Coco Chanel came from very humble beginnings but she became one of the most famous women of the 20th century. Even her career had two distinct periods. The first part lasted from around 1909 to 1939, when she closed her couture house because of World War II. The second half of the Chanel career was from 1953 to 1970 when she came out of kind of a self-imposed retirement. Coco Chanel was born in France in 1883 and she was raised in an orphanage, even though she wasn't really an orphan. Her mother had died and her father just couldn't take care of her and her two sisters, so he dropped them off at an orphanage to be raised. As a young adult she was a seamstress in a local shop and also tried to start a career singing in cafes. It's probably there that she acquired her nickname Coco, her real name was Gabrielle, because a couple of the songs she sang had "Coco" in the title. So here singing name, as it were, was Coco Chanel. She was rescued from this kind of unsuccessful singing career by a rich man that she met at the cafe named Etienne Balsan. Balsan was the heir to an industrial fortune, which gave him the time to ride and train and raise racehorses. He was really influential on Chanel, not only in her style of life, but also in her style of dressing, because Etienne and his wealthy riding friends all walked around in English-style riding clothes, and that's the look that she started to acquire. Coco became an excellent horsewoman and was known throughout her life as a very sporty individual. She not only started to wear English-inflected and menswear styled clothes, she actually could do the sports and the outdoor activities that they represented. Chanel actually started her fashion career as a milliner with a small hat shop she opened in Balsan's apartment in Paris. Chanel's hats were very simple, distinguishing her and her designs from a lot of the other fashionable hats at the time. Her shapes were simple, whereas other designers put a lot of ruffles and feathers and flowers on the hats, Chanel put like one or two ornaments, really keeping it simple in line with her design philosophy. Her first actual clothing shop was opened in Deauville, a resort area, in 1913. Because it was a resort area, people were into less formal, sporty clothes, and so her easy-to-wear skirts and pullovers, her knit tops, found a really receptive audience. She became a proper couturier in 1915, when she opened a real couture house, a made-to-order house in another resort area in Varetz. When she moved her couture operations to Paris, her career really took off, and she found clients among the avant-garde, artistic, more modern, forward-thinking women in the social world. During the 1920s and the 1930s, Chanel's style really crystallized. She became known for using a lot jersey in daywear, really easy-to-wear knits. Simple shapes, a lot of black. While some people say that Chanel invented the black dress, that's of course not true, but she definitely helped popularize the style. She did not operate her business from 1939 to 1953. And in fact, her activities during that period remain a bit controversial. When she ended her self-imposed retirement in the '50s and showed her first collection, people were astonished that it was so similar to the work that she had been doing before. They were really looking for something a little bit more revolutionary from this revolutionary designer. But within a year or two, people had realized that this is the Chanel look, and it in fact became very influential on fashion in general.
