This course provides an overview of the study of psychology, focusing on historical and current issues and problems, the methods that are used for investigating them, the results that have been reported and the theories that explain them. Course Objective The main objective of this introductory course of psychology is to make students understand, explain and predict the behavior of human beings. Through the study of this course, students will be better able to understand both themselves and others, and will also be able to apply this understanding to real life situations and problems. Learning Outcomes After completing this course a student will be able to: 1. View and discuss behavior from a scientific perspective 2. Understand the role of psychology at work place 3. Understand the wide panorama of different perspectives on the many different aspects of human behavior studied by psychologists 4. Understand the advantage and limitations of the scientific method for studying people 5. Avoid the most common misunderstandings about psychology and psychologists 6. Relate what psychologists have found out about human behavior to their own understanding of people 7. Understand the impact of both innate and learned individual characteristics (e.g., personality, emotional intelligence), and how these factors do and do not shape behavior Teaching Methodology and Requirements This course includes lectures, class discussions, exercises, and simulations. This multiplicity of methods allows students to: 1. Test their understanding of theories and concepts presented in the readings. 2. Use theories and concepts to analyze and solve actual problems in human beings. This theoretical knowledge is crucial: it allows you to be able to return to “first principles” in order to solve the new problems that you will face, continually, as a manager and a part of a society. 3. Develop skills in communicating and understanding ideas, in listening to and understanding others, and in challenging others’ views in a way that advances everyone’s understanding. 4. Principles of learning

13:14
Educational psychologists and pedagogues have identified several principles of learning, also referred to as laws of learning, which seem generally applicable to the learning process. These principles have been discovered, tested, and used in practical situations. They provide additional insight into what makes people learn most effectively. Edward Thorndike developed the first three "Laws of learning:" readiness, exercise, and effect. Since Thorndike set down his basic three laws in the early part of the twentieth century, five additional principles have been added: primacy, recency, intensity, freedom and requirement. The majority of these principles are widely applied in aerospace instruction, and some in many other fields, as outlined below: This video is targeted to blind users. The First Principles Method Explained by Elon Musk

02:49
Interview by Kevin Rose The benefit of "first principles" thinking? It allows you to innovate in clear leaps, rather than building small improvements onto something that already exists. Musk gives an example of the first automobile. While everyone else was trying to improve horse-drawn carriages, someone looked at the fundamentals of transportation and the combustion engine in order to create a car. Naturally Musk does give one warning about using first principles for innovating however, "it takes a lot more mental energy."

Quantum Physics Explained

25:34
Quantum mechanics is the branch of physics relating to the very small. It results in what may appear to be some very strange conclusions about the physical world. At the scale of atoms and electrons, many of the equations of classical mechanics, which describe how things move at everyday sizes and speeds, cease to be useful. In classical mechanics, objects exist in a specific place at a specific time. However, in quantum mechanics, objects instead exist in a haze of probability; they have a certain chance of being at point A, another chance of being at point B and so on. Three revolutionary principles Quantum mechanics (QM) developed over many decades, beginning as a set of controversial mathematical explanations of experiments that the math of classical mechanics could not explain. It began at the turn of the 20th century, around the same time that Albert Einstein published his theory of relativity, a separate mathematical revolution in physics that describes the motion of things at high speeds. Unlike relativity, however, the origins of QM cannot be attributed to any one scientist. Rather, multiple scientists contributed to a foundation of three revolutionary principles that gradually gained acceptance and experimental verification between 1900 and 1930. They are: Quantized properties: Certain properties, such as position, speed and color, can sometimes only occur in specific, set amounts, much like a dial that "clicks" from number to number. This challenged a fundamental assumption of classical mechanics, which said that such properties should exist on a smooth, continuous spectrum. To describe the idea that some properties "clicked" like a dial with specific settings, scientists coined the word "quantized." Particles of light: Light can sometimes behave as a particle. This was initially met with harsh criticism, as it ran contrary to 200 years of experiments showing that light behaved as a wave; much like ripples on the surface of a calm lake. Light behaves similarly in that it bounces off walls and bends around corners, and that the crests and troughs of the wave can add up or cancel out. Added wave crests result in brighter light, while waves that cancel out produce darkness. A light source can be thought of as a ball on a stick being rhythmically dipped in the center of a lake. The color emitted corresponds to the distance between the crests, which is determined by the speed of the ball's rhythm. Waves of matter: Matter can also behave as a wave. This ran counter to the roughly 30 years of experiments showing that matter (such as electrons) exists as particles.
