Space and Planning Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen gets right down to the fundamentals of design in this fascinating back-to-basics series. He tackles real problems in real homes as he explores six themes: space, colour, light, texture and pattern, balance and order, and personality. In addition to his own in-depth knowledge of design principles, Laurence calls on a colour forecaster, psychologists and a perception specialist to explain and demonstrate the science behind the how and the why. Taking a real home where a design problem is all too apparent, he demonstrates some simple psychology and basic experiments in a 'design lab' back at the studio -- and it's all done without knocking down walls or spending big bucks. Space comes under the spotlight in the first programme. Lack of space is a common problem in British homes which, surprisingly, have 20 square metres less space than Japanese homes, with an average of only 120 square metres. "The cardinal sin that the British indulge in beyond any other nation is the concept of agoraphobic furniture that feels it needs to keep its back against the wall at all times in case something unpleasant happens to it!" quips Laurence. By painting the walls a paler colour, bringing the outside inside by strategically placing an eye-catching object outside the window and switching to light-reflecting flooring, the brain is deluded into thinking that the room is bigger. Suddenly, the crowded living room is calmer and seems larger -- thanks to a little bit of science and the tricks of design rules. Eye brain specialist Dr Ione Fine comments: "Half of interior design is illusion."And on a practical note, Laurence shows why it's better to buy a couple of two-seater sofas -- because three people never sit on a three-seater! Please, enjoy it!

Architecture, landscape, urbanism . . . we are at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, which takes an enlightened and comprehensive view of “designed” environments and how they interrelate. But—David Netto GSD ’97 asks—how many of you have ever been taught how to make a furniture plan? How to light a room? The secrets of proportion and texture, and the breaking of rules in animating an interior? These are questions Netto has never found a satisfactory answer to in school—any school; one only learns about them from experience in the workplace. The practical truth is that how a project is perceived is key to how it is received—and essential to whether or not it gets published, written about, and given a fair trial after its transition from an abstract hypothetical to real life. Netto has worked as an interior designer for decades and has written about architecture and design history for just as long. He professes to have learned as much from writing about the work of others as from formal education in design. His latest book is about the French designer François Catroux, who since 1968 has innovated and excelled in a career of nearly fifty years with no formal design education whatsoever (he credits Philip Johnson as a formative influence and is presently working with Diller Scofidio & Renfro on an apartment in New York). In the course of his talk, Netto will address the importance of interiors in the success of architecture and his observations on how this gets accomplished, based on what he has learned in his work as a design journalist.

All architecture begins with a concept. If you’re struggling to find one, curious about what one is, or wondering how architects begin their projects; this short course will walk you through the process I use and some of the techniques I rely on to develop architectural concepts all illustrated with one of my residential projects. Design is a dialogue, and the concept ensures you have something to talk about. In this video I discuss the precise steps I take when beginning each project and how those steps lead me to an architectural concept. Before we can develop the concept, we have to first understand the practical constraints. My design process begins only after gathering and assessing all the given parameters for a project. Now, this primarily consists of three types of information. There’s information derived from the site - things like: local climate, the prevailing winds, the solar aspect, vegetation, neighboring structures, the site’s history, and any unique liabilities or opportunities. The site of course also comes along with legal frameworks for development, which describe where and what we can and can’t build. The second type of information we’ll gather is from the client. Every client has a set of cultural beliefs and preconceptions, preferences and agendas. Of course, we’ll want to determine their budget, and understand the personality traits and organizational politics which might also shape the design. The client and the building type together determine what architects call, “the program” which is essentially a detailed accounting of all the spaces the building will contain. And the third type of information I gather is related to the building typology – is it a museum, a home…or a school for example? To learn about a building typology we often conduct an analysis of notable or relevant historical precedents. We want to know the essential problems these types of structures grapple with. Understanding the history of the archetype allows us to approach a problem from a fresh perspective. All of this is necessary information that we collect for every project. This inventory can also serve as the progenitor for the design concept – our seed idea. And, rather than shunting creativity, these constraints often incite the creative process. Concept Inspirations Discussed: - Site - Client - Narrative - Materials - Structural - Mainifestos - Formal As with a good film, the setting, the characters, the cinematography, and the plot all conspire to make it what it is. It’s the experience you’ll recall rather than the concept per se. Sure, the concept sets the film in motion and it’s the starting point for all that follows. But this concept – the one or two-line description – can’t possible capture the richness and depth of the finished film…or in our case the architecture. Yet without it, the work is unfulfilling and so it should be clear that the concept is necessary for all our work as architects. // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Architectural IDEAS (Thesis, Inspiration + Precedent)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqpizO414ck -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Peyton Lambton explains basic color theory and how to use colors to transform a room. One thing that she hears from folks all the time is that they want to add more color to their home, but they are afraid of overdoing it. Have no fear, she’ll show you foolproof steps for combining color in your home. Peyton loves the color blue and she thinks it should be in every bedroom, since it is calming and tranquil. Here are three different ways to incorporate blue into your home’s decor with three unique color palettes. First, you should follow the 60-30-10 rule. This rule simply means that the room should be broken into 60% of a dominant color, 30% of a secondary color, and 10% of an accent color. Let’s get started! First, the cool & monochrome palette. This palette is made of several shades of the same color, from soft to super saturated tones. A monochromatic palette works well in any room, but it is especially calming in cool blues for the bedroom. To pull this look off, be sure to find a balance of the various shades of blue; from the bedding, to the table lamps, and the wall art to pillows. Roughly 60% is the medium blue, while the dark blue makes up 30% of the room, and the lightest blues are 10%. Next, try complementary colors. If you have watched my other videos, you might know that orange and blue is my go-to color scheme. These colors are opposite on the color wheel, like red and green or yellow and purple, which also go well together. Tip! If you plan on painting, she’d recommend painting a sample on a large wall and checking in to see how the color looks at various times of the day—in the bright morning sun, the direct afternoon light, and the warm after-dinner sunset. Lastly the analogous color palette includes the most colors. Analogous colors are next to each other on the color wheel, such as red, purple, and blue. Peyton recommends selecting select up to six colors that are next to each other on the color wheel for this look, but no more than six. Many people choose this type of palette because it showcases all of their favorite colors. Add neutral hues to balance the space, or go bold for a dramatic look. We hope you learned something and feel ready to incorporate colors into your decor! Thanks for watching! Find these products and more at Wayfair.com! Here's a discipline that uses architectural concepts and design principles to transform structures into amazing spaces with cool design elements. Sounds interesting? Interior Architecture and Design is the knowledge of and the ability to intelligently apply design concepts to create functionally and structurally sound and aesthetically appealing interiors. It requires knowledge of concepts of design and technology (within architecture) such as construction, material, landscape, space design, conservation, services (such as plumbing, HVAC) and even adaptive re-use (reusing a building for a purpose other than it was built for, such as, palaces that have now been converted into luxury hotels). combined with an understanding of complex design processes, safety and sustainability, and demographics of end user. In this way, an interior architect and designer is a specialist who – -understands the structural, hardware-related and softer aspects of finishing and furnishing a space -has a sound awareness of human history and anthropology, design theory and perspectives, materiality and technology, spatiality -styling to give the best interior space experience to the client or user. Some interesting areas of work for interior architect designers are in: -Home and Office Interior Architecture and Design -Set Design (Temporary and dynamic in nature) -Exhibition Design (Temporary and dynamic) -Retail Space Design (Dynamic ) -Residential and commercial landscape design and detailing -Furniture, fixtures and equipment Design -Accessories and Furnishings Design -Visual design for Interior Design companies -Interior Design in the health care and hospitality sectors Read up more about the Interior Architecture and Design course at IIAD: http://www.iiad.edu.in/interior-architecture-and-design Explore the possibilities in Interior Architecture and Design: http://www.iiad.edu.in/blog/what-is-architecture-interior-designing-course/

On http://houseandhome.com/tv, sleek Scandinavian design may not sound like it lends itself to family living, but this home proves otherwise. John Baker and Juli Daoust Baker of Mjolk share their bright and airy city family home. See inside the carefully curated space that’s influenced by Scandinavian and Japanese design. The couple’s love for natural light and raw material is evident in every room of the two-storey house, which is located right above their store. Unfinished oak, sandstone and untreated leather are used throughout. These natural materials will develop a patina over time. “It will look more beautiful because we’ll see ourselves in it,” says John. The kitchen features open shelves that keep cooking essentials easy to reach, while a unique top-floor courtyard provides the perfect place for the children play.

Architect Gillian Green took a pared-back approach when designing this home. See how she transformed a dark and dated space into a modern home with a reduced palette that still feels warm and inviting. Gillian opened up the main floor to create a layout that lets the natural light flood in, brightening the clean-lined interior. Concrete floors provide depth and movement, while white oak wood cabinets further the warmth. The kitchen is storage-heavy with a large island where people can gather. A large piece of limestone with stacked logs acts as art in the living room, while black and steel finishes maintain the sleek aesthetic.

The Black Interior Designers Network National Conference attracts hundreds of the premier, African-American Interior Designers and Architects across the nation. This year’s National Conference was held in Atlanta, GA, July 26-28th at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center. The conference featured three days of operational, strategic, and personal networking, as well as public, prospect, and co-branded seminars. The events equipped participating designers with the tools and inspiration necessary to embark on their own interior design projects and entrepreneurial endeavors. Education was the theme of this year's conference. The Black Interior Designer’s Network provided experts to provide pertinent information in critical areas. Attendees left with a better understanding of the principles of interior design and architecture; space, texture, light, color, patterns, line and form. The conference also featured events hosted by the distinguished members of the BID Network. On Thursday, July 26, 2018, at 8:00 p.m., Nikki Chu hosted the Connection Reception located in the Zucot Art Gallery. Similarly, on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at 1:30 p.m Michael Boyd hosted the Motivational Brunch, “Meet the Designers” at 5 Church Atlanta. Here is our recap of the entire conference. The study of Interior Design focuses on developing each student's creativity by intersecting it with visual, technical, and architectural design principles. Mastery of these principles will enhance a student's understanding of space, creativity, and art, while encouraging each person's own imagination allowing students to correctly channel and focus ideas, avoid clichés, and collect new stimuli.
