Fundamentals of Good UI Design
Paul Rand pointed out that sadly, we're more familiar with bad design than good design. And that's caused us to be more conditioned to prefer bad design. But we don't have to put up with it. We are delighted when we experience good design. Speaking to a room of developers at Silicon Valley Code Camp, Uday Gajendar, Principal Product Designer for Citrix, gave a session on the "Fundamentals of Good UI Design." As you go into any screen design project, remember, said Gajendar, every button, icon, text, tab, menu item is just yet another visual and cognitive signal that a user must process and learn, thus increasing the choices to be evaluated even if it's just for a split second. After the presentation, Gajendar and I joked about how the audience was looking for tools and recipes to create the perfect design. The problem is design is not an exact science. It's never clear when you have it perfectly right. It requires lots and lots of practice. Eight fundamentals to good UI Gajendar broke up his presentation into eight fundamentals. The first half are the visual presentation of communications. The second half have to do with interaction and experience.

Patterns, Properties and Principles of Good UX Design
Patterns! They’re everywhere and knowing how to use them effectively in a UX context can mean the difference between successful customer/user engagements and project FAIL! Using Christopher Alexander’s “Fifteen Properties of Wholeness” as a philosophy and model for good design and pattern usage, I will explain how these properties strengthen our understanding of patterns and helps to facilitate good UX design and good design practices. Using examples found in nature, architecture, music, art, language, writing, and UX, we will put Alexander’s properties to the test and see how they appear across many diverse landscapes and how they work to fully and naturally engage the end user, regardless of device or interface and even the lack thereof. Alexander’s “Properties” remind us that humans seek continuity and understanding through patterns, regardless of context. Recognizing this provides valuable insight for the UX practitioner and shows that even in the midst of changing trends and technology some of the most important and fundamental aspects of our work stay the same. For more on this topic and other important fundamental UX and design ideas, check out my new UX book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ALMQ564 Thanks! Scott Faranello

What is UX Design? Defining User Experience Design & Explaining the Process
Jose and Chris explain what UX Design is by working on the redesign of The Skool's website. User Experience Design (UXD) is the process of enhancing user satisfaction by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the user and a product or service. If you've ever been curious about UX or want to see Jose do "his UX thing" this is an episode to watch. You'll also see how we design more effective landing pages by thinking about what our "users" challenges/pain points are, and then addressing them through messaging. You should always consider... Who the Customer is. What their challenges are. How can YOU solve them? ...and confront possible user objections and questions such as... "Is this for me?" "Does it work?" "What is it exactly?" How I Organize Colors for a UI Design Project
http://skl.sh/todaro « Skillshare promo link. Today I'm taking a step back from my design tool and sharing one of my personal workflows. Organizing colors for a UI design project is a step often skipped and as a result, we create headaches for ourselves. By the end of a project, many hours spent working off the cuff turn into many disjointed colors that send mixed messages to our users. Let's take a look at some of the ways I force myself to get organized from the start to save myself time and afford myself consistency. - Take my complete Sketch course on Udemy for 50% off: https://www.udemy.com/learnsketch3/?couponCode=youtube50 - Then download my entirely free Sketch resources at: http://www.LearnSketch.com - Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Jatodaro _
