Value analysis in a nutshell

03:04
What exactly is Value Analysis? What are the core elements of this methodology? And why has this approach been so successful for 70 years? How do you proceed within such a value analysis project? What are the tasks of a Professional in Value Management (PVM)? This short explanatory video gives a first overview of the topic using the example of a construction project. The methodology Value Analysis is an organized and creative approach that applies a function- and cost-oriented design process with the aim of increasing the value of the value analysis object. It is characterized by: • Functional orientation (basic idea: The customer does not want the object but its function / effect) • Value concept (How can I increase the value of an object? How can I realize functions at the best price?) • Holistic approach (integration of all stakeholders) • Interdisciplinary teamwork (integration of employees from product development, production, sales, purchasing ...) with space for creativity • Structured, step-by-step approach (according to the value analysis work plan described in the guideline VDI 2800) and • Application neutrality, which means that the methodology can be used independently of the industry, from the phase of the project (from the concept phase to the existing product) and from the considered object (product, process, service). How these core elements, responsible for the success of the methodology, are working together, is shown vividly. In 1947 Value Analysis has been developed in the USA by Lawrence D. Miles. The Technical Division Value Management / Value Analysis at the VDI has been the leading organization for the application, support and further development Value Analysis / Value Management in the German-speaking world since 1967. It also plays a leading role in the international community. Product management vs Project management vs SDLC | Comparison and Relationship

05:15
We will look into the relationship and difference between product life cycle management, project life cycle management and SDLC (Software Development Life cycle management) with a simple example in this video. First we will try to define, life cycle phases and major focus of each of these. Product management: Product life cycle management is the process of managing the entire life cycle of a product from inception, through engineering design, and manufacture, to service and disposal of manufactured products. Generally Product life cycle management has the following phases. Idea generation Idea Screening Business Analysis Product Development Test Marketing Commercialization Evaluate and refine Major focus of product life cycle management is, the features and functionalities of the product that it offers to the customers. Now we will look into Project management. As per Project management institute (PMI), Project can be defined as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. the temporary indicates the project has a define start and end time. Project management can be defined as the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. As per PMI, project management has five process group or phases as follows. Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling Closing. The main focus of project management is, to ensure the deliverable are meeting the requirements. Let's move on to SDLC life cycle management. SDLC can be defined as a process for planning, developing, testing, and deploying an information system. SDLC management deals with this managing the process associated with SDLC to build the IT system. Generally it has following 5 phases and according to the selected methodology these phases may or may not overlap. Requirements gathering Design Development Testing, and Implementation Major focus of SDLC management is, to build the system according to the specifications. Let me connect the product, project, and SDLC life cycle with a simple example. Lets imagine a scenario where company XYZ wants to launch a new online web store that helps the merchants to sell their products online. As a first step The XYZ company will start with the initial process of product life cycle management, idea generation, idea screening and business analysis are been performed and business cases are produced to support the launch of the online store. Now the company will start a new project for developing and launching the site. At this stage, the first phase of the project Initiation will be kicked off and project charter, stake holder register will be created. At the time project planning phase, SDLC life cycle starts. Also during the project planning phase, Software Development Methodology (SDM) will be chosen to implement the SDLC process and the software development starts. Normally entire SDLC will be contained in planning, execution, monitor & control phases of project life cycle. I would like to mention one point here. we can't exactly define at what phases of project management life cycle, the SDLC process will fit in, as the SDLC process might or might not overlap based on the selected software development methodology. So here I made an assumption of water fall SDLC methodology is followed. System development and launching process will start either at the planning, or slightly before that, and go through the execution and finishes at the monitoring and control phase. At this stage, SDLC life cycle ends. Next phase of the project is the project closing phase where the required documents will be submitted and the project will get closed formally. Though the project is closed here, still the product life cycle continues here. Product evaluation and refining is a continuous process and the product will be evolved further based on the customers feed back or through some analysis. Lets say, the company wants to roll out a mobile version of the application to the market. At this point of time one more project will be started and will continue the same cycle as mentioned above. So in a nut shell, a product life cycle will have many project life cycles and SDLC will be a part of the project management life cycle.

The Secret of successful product development with Robert G Cooper

06:34
The original idea for the Stage-Gate® Innovation process – now used worldwide to manage product development projects – came from research by Dr. Robert G Cooper, who was studying how successful “intrapreneurs” within large companies created product innovations. The findings were written up as a paper and soon the phone started ringing with interest from industry. Thirty-five years on from that paper, we caught up with Robert in Cambridge, UK, recently and asked him what makes for success, the impact of Agile development, what he has seen recently that is game-changing, and what his hopes are for the future. What is Agile Development (Part 1): What is Agile Development?

04:28
“What is agile development?” It’s always been surprisingly hard to get a simple answer to this question. There are esoteric and convoluted descriptions of agile all over the web, complete with concentric circles meant to sum it all up into a simple concept, and yet that simple answer eludes us. To be fair, agile development methodology isn’t a simple thing. Sourceseek is a free service that handpicks software developers for your exact project needs. Get started here: https://www.sourceseek.com/get-started/ We’ll start with wikipedia’s agile methodology definition: From Wikipedia: Agile software development is a group of software development methods based on iterative and incremental development, where requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration between self-organizing, cross-functional teams. It promotes adaptive planning, evolutionary development and delivery, a time-boxed iterative approach, and encourages rapid and flexible response to change. It is a conceptual framework that promotes foreseen interactions throughout the development cycle. The first sentence starts by saying that agile development is a software development methodology. A software development methodology is a set of practices and procedures that help a team get organized and build software. It’s not the software itself, it’s the rule-book for organizing the team. That first sentence goes on to describe an iterative and incremental development approach. This is a key concept, and if you only take away one thing about agile this is the one to take away. In agile, we do iterations (circles) where we plan, execute, then review the results so that we can refine the plan and start all over again. We love change, and we want as many iterations and feedback loops as possible during the project. At the end of that first sentence, wikipedia describes collaboration: This really just means that we emphasize partnership and collaboration, with each member of the team serving a specific role but everyone expected to be flexible and to work together. In agile, we love teamwork. The second sentence brings in the concepts of adaptive planning, evolutionary development and delivery, a time-boxed iterative approach, and rapid and flexible response to change. In this part of the definition, we see how it all comes together! I interpret this sentence like this: ● We are adaptive. We don’t plan it all at the beginning and then stop planning. We do iterations and we are adjusting the plan all the time. This is why agile is so good for product development, we change and improve as we learn. ● We love evolutionary development. This is essentially the same thing, we learn as we go and we adjust, refine, improve... ● Time-boxing. This basically means that we manage our project using set blocks of time, like days or weeks, and we try to get as much done in those time-boxes as possible. This is the reverse of managing features. We consider what features we can build next week rather than looking at a list of features and asking how long it will take to build them. ● Rapid and flexible response to change: this is critical, and along with ‘iterations’ is the core answer to the question ‘what is agile development?’. We move fast, we are flexible, and we are truly ‘agile’! This is our mantra - fast and flexible - say it again and again!! What is agile development? ● Agile is a way of managing software projects. ● Agile is iterative, and goes in repeated cycles instead of in a long list of steps.. ● Agile is super collaborative and team-oriented. ● Agile is adaptive, constantly changing and refining plans, and moves fast! In almost every project, the client has a harder time expressing what they want at the beginning, and it gets gradually clearer towards the end. The can be a frustrating experience as mid-project changes are pretty disruptive. Let’s try it in agile. 1) Client hires developers by the hour, day, or week. 2) Client describes what they want to the developers 3) Developers start making designs and programming the theme based on what they client thinks they want. 4) Developers show their progress to the client constantly, even every day, to make sure they are on track. 5) The client makes frequent changes and tweaks, always refining the plan and improving the result. The developer also has input and suggestions. 6) The team keeps going until the project is done.. It all sounds very good, and it can be, but the reality is that the agile development methodology requires a solid team of smart people who know what they are doing or it can be a train wreck. It also requires that the entire team (client included) be committed to an honest, forthcoming approach that emphasizes success for the client.
