Product management vs Project management vs SDLC | Comparison and Relationship

05:15
We will look into the relationship and difference between product life cycle management, project life cycle management and SDLC (Software Development Life cycle management) with a simple example in this video. First we will try to define, life cycle phases and major focus of each of these. Product management: Product life cycle management is the process of managing the entire life cycle of a product from inception, through engineering design, and manufacture, to service and disposal of manufactured products. Generally Product life cycle management has the following phases. Idea generation Idea Screening Business Analysis Product Development Test Marketing Commercialization Evaluate and refine Major focus of product life cycle management is, the features and functionalities of the product that it offers to the customers. Now we will look into Project management. As per Project management institute (PMI), Project can be defined as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. the temporary indicates the project has a define start and end time. Project management can be defined as the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. As per PMI, project management has five process group or phases as follows. Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling Closing. The main focus of project management is, to ensure the deliverable are meeting the requirements. Let's move on to SDLC life cycle management. SDLC can be defined as a process for planning, developing, testing, and deploying an information system. SDLC management deals with this managing the process associated with SDLC to build the IT system. Generally it has following 5 phases and according to the selected methodology these phases may or may not overlap. Requirements gathering Design Development Testing, and Implementation Major focus of SDLC management is, to build the system according to the specifications. Let me connect the product, project, and SDLC life cycle with a simple example. Lets imagine a scenario where company XYZ wants to launch a new online web store that helps the merchants to sell their products online. As a first step The XYZ company will start with the initial process of product life cycle management, idea generation, idea screening and business analysis are been performed and business cases are produced to support the launch of the online store. Now the company will start a new project for developing and launching the site. At this stage, the first phase of the project Initiation will be kicked off and project charter, stake holder register will be created. At the time project planning phase, SDLC life cycle starts. Also during the project planning phase, Software Development Methodology (SDM) will be chosen to implement the SDLC process and the software development starts. Normally entire SDLC will be contained in planning, execution, monitor & control phases of project life cycle. I would like to mention one point here. we can't exactly define at what phases of project management life cycle, the SDLC process will fit in, as the SDLC process might or might not overlap based on the selected software development methodology. So here I made an assumption of water fall SDLC methodology is followed. System development and launching process will start either at the planning, or slightly before that, and go through the execution and finishes at the monitoring and control phase. At this stage, SDLC life cycle ends. Next phase of the project is the project closing phase where the required documents will be submitted and the project will get closed formally. Though the project is closed here, still the product life cycle continues here. Product evaluation and refining is a continuous process and the product will be evolved further based on the customers feed back or through some analysis. Lets say, the company wants to roll out a mobile version of the application to the market. At this point of time one more project will be started and will continue the same cycle as mentioned above. So in a nut shell, a product life cycle will have many project life cycles and SDLC will be a part of the project management life cycle.

What is Agile Development (Part 1): What is Agile Development?

04:28
“What is agile development?” It’s always been surprisingly hard to get a simple answer to this question. There are esoteric and convoluted descriptions of agile all over the web, complete with concentric circles meant to sum it all up into a simple concept, and yet that simple answer eludes us. To be fair, agile development methodology isn’t a simple thing. Sourceseek is a free service that handpicks software developers for your exact project needs. Get started here: https://www.sourceseek.com/get-started/ We’ll start with wikipedia’s agile methodology definition: From Wikipedia: Agile software development is a group of software development methods based on iterative and incremental development, where requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration between self-organizing, cross-functional teams. It promotes adaptive planning, evolutionary development and delivery, a time-boxed iterative approach, and encourages rapid and flexible response to change. It is a conceptual framework that promotes foreseen interactions throughout the development cycle. The first sentence starts by saying that agile development is a software development methodology. A software development methodology is a set of practices and procedures that help a team get organized and build software. It’s not the software itself, it’s the rule-book for organizing the team. That first sentence goes on to describe an iterative and incremental development approach. This is a key concept, and if you only take away one thing about agile this is the one to take away. In agile, we do iterations (circles) where we plan, execute, then review the results so that we can refine the plan and start all over again. We love change, and we want as many iterations and feedback loops as possible during the project. At the end of that first sentence, wikipedia describes collaboration: This really just means that we emphasize partnership and collaboration, with each member of the team serving a specific role but everyone expected to be flexible and to work together. In agile, we love teamwork. The second sentence brings in the concepts of adaptive planning, evolutionary development and delivery, a time-boxed iterative approach, and rapid and flexible response to change. In this part of the definition, we see how it all comes together! I interpret this sentence like this: ● We are adaptive. We don’t plan it all at the beginning and then stop planning. We do iterations and we are adjusting the plan all the time. This is why agile is so good for product development, we change and improve as we learn. ● We love evolutionary development. This is essentially the same thing, we learn as we go and we adjust, refine, improve... ● Time-boxing. This basically means that we manage our project using set blocks of time, like days or weeks, and we try to get as much done in those time-boxes as possible. This is the reverse of managing features. We consider what features we can build next week rather than looking at a list of features and asking how long it will take to build them. ● Rapid and flexible response to change: this is critical, and along with ‘iterations’ is the core answer to the question ‘what is agile development?’. We move fast, we are flexible, and we are truly ‘agile’! This is our mantra - fast and flexible - say it again and again!! What is agile development? ● Agile is a way of managing software projects. ● Agile is iterative, and goes in repeated cycles instead of in a long list of steps.. ● Agile is super collaborative and team-oriented. ● Agile is adaptive, constantly changing and refining plans, and moves fast! In almost every project, the client has a harder time expressing what they want at the beginning, and it gets gradually clearer towards the end. The can be a frustrating experience as mid-project changes are pretty disruptive. Let’s try it in agile. 1) Client hires developers by the hour, day, or week. 2) Client describes what they want to the developers 3) Developers start making designs and programming the theme based on what they client thinks they want. 4) Developers show their progress to the client constantly, even every day, to make sure they are on track. 5) The client makes frequent changes and tweaks, always refining the plan and improving the result. The developer also has input and suggestions. 6) The team keeps going until the project is done.. It all sounds very good, and it can be, but the reality is that the agile development methodology requires a solid team of smart people who know what they are doing or it can be a train wreck. It also requires that the entire team (client included) be committed to an honest, forthcoming approach that emphasizes success for the client. 14:43
Business is tough for companies making SW products. Products are getting more and more complex and still the user experience should become better. To manage the complexity the SW Product companies are doing two things: 1. Acquiring more or enhancing exciting IT systems 2. Hiring more middle management to manage the different areas. This video shows you a different approach were you minimize the number of IT systems and same time need less middle management for micro managing and reporting.

Model-Driven Digital Twins for Lower Risk Product Development

16:53
Description: Digital twins are becoming an important tool for Industry 4.0 leaders to simulate machine behavior before physical production. Learn how digital twins can help you create better machine designs that get to market faster, all while reducing the high costs of commissioning issues. Abstract: A digital twin is a virtual model of your product, and the perfect companion for diagnostics, maintenance, and product innovations. By understanding system-wide interactions with digital twins, you'll be able to spot design issues early before having to build expensive prototypes. Once a design has been chosen, it can be connected to your controllers to test integration in a virtual commissioning phase, ironing out the issues you'd otherwise find on the production floor. In this presentation, join Graham Jackson of Maplesoft as he introduces the basics of a model-driven digital twin and explores their growing utility in the packaging industry through practical examples. Expect to leave this session with a better understanding of where digital twin techniques could fit in your development process, and learn the first steps of integration if you've never used digital twin technology before. Prototype Development

02:43
Before you spend any money prototyping your product you have to read Focus 3 steps to a successful prototype. You can find the info here: http://www.focuspdm.com/3-steps-make-successful-prototype 3 Steps to a Successful Prototype You are here Since prototyping can be, but is not necessarily, expensive, it's important to determine what your prototype is helping you achieve. There are prototypes designed to test user experience, market appeal and overal functionality. When considering building a prototype, keep in mind the most valuable aspect of your product - is it a modern exterior finish, or a well operating internal mechanism? We've put together a chart to view prototypes at a glance. Prototypes test for a myriad of functions, including aesthetics and appearance, hold and feel, operation and mechanical function, electronic function and internal structure. Engineers create prototypes in order to identify and resolve weaknesses before production. Refining the design before production economizes the manufacturing budget. Creating a prototype begins with the ideation of a concept, called Concept Generation, then the concept is adapted into detailed drawings or 3D CAD files, then parts are sourced, made or printed by a 3D printer, and assembled by hand. We walk you through the prototyping of a product containing mechanical parts that required 3D printing. 1. Industrial Design and Concept Generation Concept Generation begins with ideation – a method of brainstorming that is based on the project requirements and user needs. These initial ideas lead to a series of three, six, or nine concepts represented in sketch form to be considered by the client for final design direction. Throughout this iterative and often circular process, the designer explores design alternatives, eliminates issues, and incorporates client feedback. This process identifies feasible avenues for product development. During the ideation phase, designers consider technology integration and client preferences to transform a broad concept idea to an acute concept design. When a final design is chosen, the concept moves into Phase Two and is adapted into CAD software to be formatted before a 3D model is created. 2. CAD File Creation Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is a software used by designers to create, adjust and analyze a design for 3D printing. Preparation in CAD is essential to creating a prototype of dimensional precision and accuracy. CAD is an asset to the iterative design process because model dimensions can be quickly altered between printings, keeping production on schedule. CAD also enables you to create visual models for your product prototype. Your design graphics can be used to present your product to market. Aesthetically pleasing renderings show your finished vision and increase your likelihood of viability on the market. 3. Printed 3D Models The third step of creating a prototype is the application of CAD files to the 3D printing process. Due to the rapid production rate of 3D printers, necessary iterations of 3D models can be quickly generated and reviewed by the Industrial Design team, speeding up overall product development. Using a skilled 3D technician and CAD designer ensure a congruent match between CAD files and actual prototype dimensions. With function and economy in mind, 3D models are printed in a rigid plastic-like or flexible rubber-like material. Printing material is chosen for durability, color and flexion, and determined by scale, appearance and function of the model. Your prototype will be printed on one of two models, based on your unique design specifications. The cost of a 3D printed model is variable, and calculated by time to print, size and intricacy of the design. Printed models are surrounded by a rubbery, waxen support material. This support material is removed manually, chemically or with heat by a skilled technician. The excavation process can be time consuming, based on the level of formal intricacy of a component. After the excavation stage, the models are finished through washing and drying, before returning to the Industrial Design team for review and refinement. Individualized, scaled printing costs ensure fair pricing. http://www.focuspdm.com/3-steps-make-successful-prototype

Implementing Stage-Gate® in the Real World

01:00:17
As many companies have found, moving to a best practice Stage-Gate® process to accelerate product development can appear to be a daunting challenge. And simply implementing a software system is not enough. Without work on process design, training, communication and a willingness to adapt and evolve the process, the benefits anticipated will not be realized and, at worst, the process will fail. This presentation describes Scott Bader's journey since the decision was made to automate its product development process. A journey that has been an evolutionary process. By watching this video you will learn: • How to implement a Stage-Gate® process • How the process model was customized to fit Scott Bader's needs, while maintaining best practices, and how this model has evolved since the initial implementation • How the implementation of an automated product development process has improved decision making • What were the key challenges that were overcome and what challenges remain
