English/Nat British newspapers promised on Monday to respect the privacy of Britain's young princes. The calls for increased press vigilance have intensified since the death of Princess Diana. The Independent - a leading British newspaper - has even pledged not to publish photographs issued by Buckingham Palace. But some say the self-imposed ban on printing paparazzi pictures simply won't work. Some of the U-K's leading newspapers, including one of the country's most sensational tabloids, have vowed to change their policy of publishing paparazzi-style photographs. The tabloids are the most avid followers of the royals, but took action after Princess Diana's brother Earl Spencer launched a stinging attack on the use of paparazzi photographs in British newspapers. Earl Spencer said editors who had bought paparazzi photographs of her private moments had "blood on their hands". The Independent newspaper - not renowned for covering royal stories - went further. The newspaper says it will never again carry photographs of Prince William, 15 and Prince Harry, 12, in private situations even if the pictures came from Buckingham Palace itself. The Independent, a serious broadsheet, has never been as lucrative a market for the paparazzi photographers that the tabloids were. Britain's top selling newspaper - The Sun - with a circulation of around 4 (m) million copies daily, also says it will no longer use photographs which invade the privacy of Princes William and Harry. But those involved in dealing with national newspapers say the new mood won't last. SOUNDBITE; (English) ''I can't see any newspaper editor, any national newspaper editor, turning down a picture , a fantastic picture, that all of their readers would desperately like to see of whoever it might be, or whatever event it might be worldwide because it has been taken by the paparazzi. It doesn't ring true to me. This is a public relations exercise. Obviously, we all understand why.'' SUPER CAPTION: Max Clifford, Publicist A publicist for some 30 years to the rich and infamous, Max Clifford thinks the only way forward is for newspapers to police themselves. SOUNDBITE: (English) ''I think that self-regulation is the best. It isn't perfect. There are and will be mistakes but it is the best. In a healthy democracy, you must have a free press.'' SUPER CAPTION: Max Clifford, Publicist It's intimate scenes such as this notorious secret picture of Diana exercising in a gym that so outraged Earl Spencer and now the British public. As for the Royal Family, Britain's Number One publicist thinks only Prince William and Prince Harry will need to be protected from the press. He says they are the main focus now that their mother is no longer around. SOUNDBITE: (English) ''They haven't really bothered the Royal Family much for donkey's years (a long time), because there's not much interest in the Royal Family. The only one person - or the two of course - are Wills and Harry. They're the people that will need - and they will get plenty of protection particularly now. Sadly because of their mother losing her life with the help of the paparazzi.'' (27 Sep 2017) 'GAME OF THRONES' STARS KIT HARINGTON, ROSE LESLIE ENGAGED Kit Harington and his former "Game of Thrones" on-screen romantic partner, Rose Leslie, are engaged. A formal notice published in the Times of London newspaper Wednesday announced the upcoming marriage of "Mr K.C. Harington and Miss R.E. Leslie." It describes the couple as "Kit, younger son of David and Deborah Harington of Worcestershire, and Rose, middle daughter of Sebastian and Candy Leslie of Aberdeenshire." Harington and Leslie were a couple on the HBO series as Jon Snow and Ygritte. Leslie left the cast in 2014. Her publicist and HBO didn't immediately offer comment Wednesday. But then others urged him to look into getting a traditional publishing deal so using contacts he made through his podcast, Jim investigated. Having nothing to lose, he went for it and got a book deal just like that! The book deal happened because of Jim's existing platform. He started a marketing podcast for Wired magazine and really just gave it a go in terms of starting it up, and found a presentation style that suited him (enthusiastic!) Podcasting tip: Find your voice – Jim's podcast has been called “audible caffeine”. After 150 episodes, it's all about consistency and excellence in production to make an impact. This platform gave Jim the authority and platform that publishers looked at when he pitched his book. Marketing the book Salary Tutor. All the usual stuff re interviews , blogging, social media. An interview on Yahoo Finance made it to the Yahoo front page. Jim credits the publicist which is a good part of having a publishing company produce your book. He is now gearing up for the paperback launch as ebook was launched first (and is available now on Kindle). Jim is also looking at these marketing ideas: Search Engine Optimization. Looking to dominate “How to negotiate salary” and other keyword search terms. He will be optimizing the webpage to get more traffic to SalaryTutor.com Speaking – will be aiming at college students, job-search groups and try to speak to bigger audiences iPad app. Jim has kept the rights to do an iPad app so he has some ideas on that for later this year. On managing time. You have to know what you will give up in order to write and market your book. It definitely takes a big personal investment. On how the industry is responding to digital publishing. Conde Nast now have a full suite of magazine apps so they are responsive. It is a shifting market although magazine sales remain, despite newspaper readership going down. Personal branding and standing out in the crowded social media market. Get yourname URL. Even just set up About.Me page. It's free – there's no excuse for not having this anymore. Start somewhere, make a business card, do a basic page. You can get a free blog on Tumblr, then move to wordpress. Start slow and work your way up. On the podcast. “Just do it!” Don't think about it too much, don't worry about the name or anything – just get started with the content. There is some initial setup, but once that is done, it's easy to get it done weekly. You can come up with ideas easily when you're running or doing other things. For interviews, recognize super-connectors who can introduce you to other people. On Salary Tutor – it's not just a job search book, it's fun and uses story and case studies to make the points. It has practical advice to answer the questions you face at interview e.g. “so what do you expect to make for a salary”. Basically, it could make you more money. Jim's research includes FBI hostage negotiation techniques that will help you control the situation.

Sound like a native speaker: the BEST pronunciation advice

Are you following the wrong pronunciation advice? Do you think that to have good English pronunciation you need to say every word per-fect-ly? Have you been told that you need to say each syllable in exactly the same way that it is written? Well, in this video I explain why what seems like logical advice is actually COMPLETELY WRONG. The secret to getting excellent English pronunciation is to relax your tongue and to start missing syllables! That's because native speakers do not speak perfectly in natural, everyday speech. In fact, it even sounds strange to say every word perfectly. I explain to you how we use 'elision' to make our speech more connected, flowing, and relaxed. This means that we don't say every vowel and sometimes even miss words. I also tell you about the most important sound you need to know about in English to improve your pronunciation - the schwa sound: /ə/. And that's one of the things that makes the speech of native speakers hard to understand because we don't say every single word perfectly, like, how it is on the page. We squash words together, and we miss sounds out. So I'm showing you how we do that in today's lesson. So you know we like tea in England, right? We like to drink tea. Well, we call it a "cuppa tea". And if I were to offer you that, I'd say, "Dju wanna cuppa tea?" "Dju wanna cuppa tea?" And we've got an example of elision in that sentence. The written sentence would be, "Do you want a cup of tea?" All the different syllables being pronounced. But colloquial, relaxed spoken English, "Dju wanna cuppa tea?" So the "of" joins the words before. So remember, it's "cup of tea", "cuppa tea." "Dju want a cuppa tea?" We join that. And that's an example of elision. We can also elide consonants. For example, in this sentence, the reply, "I don wanna tea." Some people will not say the T at the end of a word if the next word is another consonant. So saying it properly is more effort. "I don't want a cup of tea." Or, again, there's more elision here. "I don't want a tea." The A joins "want" and becomes "wanna". "I don wanna tea." Two examples of elision there: not saying the T and A joining "want", the word before. What about the next example here? Here, I've written it out, "I don't want a tea." What we see here is the contraction, and that is standard English. We can write that. We can write "don't" like that, "do not". "I don't want a tea." But you cannot write it exactly how it sounds. You cannot write it, "I don". You need the T there. And the difference between contractions and elision is that contractions are okay when we write them, and elision isn't -- it's not necessarily the case that we can write down an elision and it be grammatically correct English. I'll show you two examples. "Wanna" and "gonna" are two common forms in colloquial speech. We say them all the time. "I wanna do that." "I'm gonna go there later." But we can't write them. The reason we can't write them is that they're not contractions. They're not recognized as being standard English. We can say it, but we can't write it that way. In general, we use elision in our speech because it's just easier than saying every single sound in a sentence. Some people think that posh accents are made up of just saying every single word properly and giving it good enunciation and definition and making sure you say everything correctly. But in fact, as we'll see in a sec, posh people and posh accents also use elision in their speech. But they will have some rules that they consider wrong. So for example, "wanna" and "gonna" in some posh accents are considered sloppy or not right or not a correct way of speaking. But I think a good thing to say about that is a lot of people think and perceive that they don't use these words when in fact they do. So you could ask a posh person, "Do you ever say this?" "Oh, no. I wouldn't say that. It's not right. It's not proper English." When in fact, David Cameron would also use "wanna" and "gonna". He's the prime minister of the UK at the moment. So I'd say he's a pretty posh guy, and he's using "wanna" and "gonna". That shows me that these are quite standard forms now. Some people will judge you for it, "Oh, it's not right. You don't say it that way." And also, some people will not realize that they say it themselves. So -- So -- yeah. What to think about elision? It just shows us how when we try to speak English correctly just by reading everything properly, this is not going to help you sound like a relaxed, natural speaker of English who actually sounds good because our real speech doesn't fit the actual words on the page.y of the vowels.

The estranged wife of former Beatle Paul McCartney told Britain's GMTV programme on Wednesday that she was close to suicide. "I've had worse press than a paedophile or a murderer and I've done nothing but charity for 20 years," she said. She was also asked in a BBC interview later Wednesday whether tabloid newspapers were at fault. "It's the tabloids and a certain party, but it is so extreme and so abusive ... I mean, I've been called monster, whore, gold digger, fantasist, liar." But there was no sympathy from the tabloid newspapers on Thursday. "Heather's amazing TV rant," said the front page of the Daily Express. Another, the Daily Mail, took a more hardline stance asking "How dare you compare your ordeal to Kate McCann's?" In the interview with GMTV, Heather Mills-McCartney complained about the media's treatment of other prominent figures such as Kate McCann, mother of missing Madeleine, and Princess Diana. A former publicist for Paul McCartney said that he didn't think that her treatment in the press was an accurate reflection. "From what I saw she's a very kind woman and she's probably confused to hell," Geoff Baker told AP Television. "You know, it's just like she's woken up one morning and is some form of axe-murderer." The McCartneys announced their separation in May and began divorce proceedings in July. (13 Sep 2017) KID ROCK OPENS NEW DETROIT ARENA AMID PROTEST, TEASES MOVE INTO POLITICS Kid Rock didn't offer any new clues about his political future during a concert at Detroit's new sports arena on Tuesday (12 September). The musician opened the Little Caesars Arena after two months of teasing a potential Republican run for U.S. Senate in Michigan. For much of the summer, the Detroit-area native teased a Republican run for the U.S. Senate. Kid Rock's real name is Robert Ritchie, but it's not clear which name could appear on the ballot if he runs -- something that could make a difference in how well he would do. Kid Rock first gained commercial success in the late 1990s with rap-rock music but has been more associated with country music in recent years. He endorsed Republican Mitt Romney for president in 2012 and Republican Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign. He hinted on social media in July that a website teasing his candidacy for Senate was real. His publicist had said Kid Rock would give fans exclusive insight on his political views and aspirations after his first song Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena, the recently completed venue that's the new home for the NHL's Red Wings and the NBA's Pistons. But that didn't happen. He spoke from a podium after being introduced with a campaign-style sign on a video board, but didn't give any hints about a potential candidacy. "And if Kid Rock for Senate has got some folks in disarray, what until they hear Kid Rock for president of the U.S.A. Because, wouldn't it be a sight to see? President Kid Rock in Washington, D.C.? Standing on the desk in the Oval Office like a G," he half-sang from the stage. His appearance was met by protests from a civil rights group. The National Action Network's Detroit chapter says Kid Rock's embrace of the Confederate flag, expletive-laced criticism of NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and unabashed support for Trump have no place in Detroit, where about 80 percent of the city's 680,000 residents are black. George and Amal Clooney welcome twins Ella and Alexander. Amal Clooney has given birth to twins - a girl named Ella and a boy named Alexander. They were born in London on Tuesday morning, the publicist of her actor husband George Clooney said. "Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine," Stan Rosenfield said before joking: "George is sedated and should recover in a few days." George, 56, married the lawyer, 39, in September 2014 in Venice. Amal Clooney's parents said they were delighted to welcome their grandchildren. "They are in great health, all is perfect," Amal's father Ramzi Alamuddin, who lives in Beirut, told AFP news agency. "I am very happy for them, they will be great parents." Amal's mother Baria, who is in hospital with her daughter, said: "We are over the moon. It was a beautiful delivery.
