Marketing Funnels are one of the hottest topics in the world of business and marketing right now and for good reason. But what exactly is a marketing funnel, and more importantly, how can you harness the power of this incredible tool in your business to generate more leads and sales? So What exactly Is A Marketing Funnel? Well, A marketing funnel sometimes called a sales funnel, conversion funnel, or just plain old funnel, is a system that allows you to track the customer journey from having no idea who you are right through to becoming a lifelong loyal customer, and every step in-between. # The Elevation Marketing Process My suggestion is to use something along the lines of The Elevation Marketing Process which goes: Traffic – Conversion – Ascension – Elevation 1. Traffic Step 1 is to identify where your prospective customers (let’s call them leads) are coming from. Are they finding you through social media, a search engine, or a paid ad you’re running. Once you’ve identified your traffic sources you can start to compare and pit them against one another. And may the strongest traffic source win! As a side note, these leads who have never heard about you or your business before are called “cold” 2. Conversion Once your lead has arrived at your website, store front, or landing page, the next step is to get them to make a micro-commitment and take some form of action. If you’re selling a low priced item (like a pack of gum) than that action could be a sale. If you’re selling a higher priced item (like a car) than that micro-commitment could be a smaller action (like going for a test drive). The point here is that you want to encourage them to take the next logical step in the relationship, whether it’s exchanging their contact information like their name, email, or phone number, or even agreeing to a follow up meeting. At this stage your lead is now “warm” 3. Ascension Alright, at this point in the funnel you’re going to be working with fewer leads than you started with. But that’s ok! Because those that are still with you are a higher quality lead, and are more interested in what you have to offer. They’ve also taken some form of action or micro-commitment and are a lot more open to what you have to offer next. It’s at this stage that you want to begin the follow-up process and really bring the value. Continue to nurture your leads by providing more valuable and helpful information but at the same time, don’t be afraid to ask for the sale. If you’ve done a good job at guiding them along their journey up until this point the next logical step should be your core offer, product, or service. When your “warm” lead buys and exchanges their money for your product or service they become “hot”. 4. Elevation It’s now time to really bring on the value and elevate your relationship with your customers. Following up with your recent buyers is one of the fastest ways to solidify your position as a business that truly cares. Buyers remorse is very real, and is alive and well across all markets and industries, so the first 24-48 hours after making a purchase is a critical time to calm any anxieties and affirm your new customers decision to do business with your company. It’s also unexpected. The purchase funnel, or purchasing funnel, is a consumer focused marketing model which illustrates the theoretical customer journey towards the purchase of a product or service. In 1898, E. St. Elmo Lewis developed a model which mapped a theoretical customer journey from the moment a brand or product attracted consumer attention to the point of action or purchase. St. Elmo Lewis’ idea is often referred to as the AIDA-model, an acronym which stands for Awareness, Interest, Desire, and Action. This staged process is summarized below: Awareness – the customer is aware of the existence of a product or service; Interest – actively expressing an interest in a product group; Desire – aspiring to a particular brand or product; Action – taking the next step towards purchasing the chosen product. The Purchase Funnel is also often referred to as the “customer funnel,” “marketing funnel,” or “sales funnel” or "conversion funnel." The association of the funnel model with the AIDA concept was first proposed in Bond Salesmanship by William W. Townsend in 1924. This early model has been modified by marketing consultants and academics to cater to the modern customer and is now referred to in marketing as the purchase funnel or buying funnel. Many different business-to-consumer purchase models exist in marketing today, but it is generally accepted that the modern business-to-business purchase funnel has more stages, considers repurchase intent and takes into account new technologies and changes in consumer purchase behavior. As a model, the buying funnel has been validated in a variety of domains, including searching, keyword advertising, and lead generation but also modified to include previously unconsidered steps and metrics such as outbound sales and internet impressions. The purchase funnel concept is used in marketing to guide promotional campaigns targeting different stages of the customer journey, and also as a basis for customer relationship management (CRM) programmes and lead management campaigns.

When we evaluate where customers are in the 4 stages of the buying process, we can customize our sales approach, sales funnel, and marketing message to fit their needs. Unaware The Unaware customer does not know they have a problem or desire, and they don't know about your product or niche. We can use Hell Heaven marketing, Educational marketing, or Case Study marketing to help the customer realize they have the same problem we're describing. We want to open their eyes and help them see and really feel the consequences of not fixing the problem. Aware The Aware customer knows they have a problem or desire. Again, we can use Hell Heaven, educational, or case study marketing to remind the customer about their problem. When they hear us talk about the problem with absolute clarity, they instantly recognize that we understand their problem (often better than they do!) and they feel we must have a solution to their problem. Evaluation The customer is researching and evaluating solutions. The Aware and Evaluation stages are often very similar. This is a great time to use case studies, data, and emotions to help the customer understand how our product or service can solve their problem. We want them to recognize our solution as the best and ONLY solution to their problem or desire, and trigger them into taking action. Purchase The customer decides on your solution and makes their purchase. This is the perfect time to use excellent customer service, guarantees, social proof, and cognitive biases to get the customer off the fence and close the sale. Take Action! When a lead contacts your business, you need to find out what stage of the buying process they are in. Are they just barely aware of their problem and beginning the research and evaluation process? Or are they ready to buy? Where they are in the buying process will determine the marketing message you'll want to present to them. If you sit down right now for 30 minutes with a pen and paper, and really think through this strategy, you'll be miles ahead of your competition. Presenting the right marketing message to the right person at the right time in THEIR PERSONAL buying process is what makes or breaks a sale. Depending on WHO you are, you probably have a different need for the same outcome (i.e. a drink). When I was building my startup Flowtown, we had customers who bought our product at $20/month, some at $200/month and even a few at $2K/month! Were they the same? Yes and no. Yes, they all had the same need.... ... but no, they all had a different motivation and reality they were coming from. That’s why I think it’s important to map your marketing strategy to your buyers. Fail to do this and you’ll only be speaking to one type of customer - or the one stage of the buyer's journey. The cool part is there’s a simple framework you can use to clearly identify the type of content that you need to create to help customers move through the funnel quickly to purchase. Here’s a mental model you can use to think through the process... ... starting with each role and the type of information they need. The CEO wants to learn about problem space so he can be better informed to evaluate his need against his vision for the company. The CMO wants to learn more about the specific solutions available and companies using them so he can feel good about his timing decision, and the specific vendor to avoid looking stupid. The Marketing Manager needs to understand the specific features and benefits of each platform so he can map his strategic goals to the product’s key strengths. Each one is potentially looking at your solution under a completely different lens, and searching to answer their questions from a different type of position. Many in the industry call it TOFU (Top of Funnel), MOFU (Middle of Funnel) and BOFU (Bottom of Funnel). My buddy Sujan likes to call it Kung-Fu! :) Regardless of where you’re at, you need to address each stage of the journey with the right content. That’s how you map your marketing strategy to your buyer’s journey. So what stage of business do you have the hardest time creating content for? Grant explains how the Digital Sales Funnel has superseded the traditional Sales Funnel which was created in 1898. A short history of the Purchase Funnel.. In 1898 Elias Elmo Lewis created the purchase funnel, which has become ubiquitous all around the world. But how can a purchase funnel created over a hundred years ago still be relevant in business today? Well the truth is, it isn't. You see, the purchase funnel has a wide top and it relied on the fact that attention was abundant, which of course, in 1898 it probably was. If you put a direct mail through someone's door over a hundred years ago, the chances are they would have a look at it. But today that isn't the case. This is because we now live in a world where everybody owns a media channel and information has therefore become abundant. There's a direct cause and effect. In other words, in a world of abundance of information, attention is not scarce and, therefore, the scatter gun approach of bombarding lots and lots of people to get their attention simply doesn't work. Therefore, in the digital sales funnel, we have a narrow top because the idea is; the only way we'll get people's attention today is by creating value and that won't work by bombarding the world but by attracting them to us. The reason why, in the digital sales funnel, we now have a fat middle, is because that's where we need to concentrate our efforts. Attention is the most precious thing that every company needs today in order to be successful. Therefore, once we've earned someone's attention, we need to nurture it and keep it in order to bring them to a purchase later on. Therefore we'll have more and more people. As they come into our funnel we don't just want to get rid of them, screen them out, as we did in the traditional purchase funnel, but we want to hold their attention. Even if they don't buy, using their media channels they may very well become an advocate and recommend us to someone else. Therefore, if we want to be successful at business today, we can't be using models from 1898. We need to get with the times, understand that the dynamic of attention has changed, and use the digital sales funnel in order to nurture attention and get purchases.

The Sales Funnel is the most popular visual depiction that you will find, thus why most people might be familiar with the term “Sales Funnel” and not the term “Buyer’s Journey”. So there are 3 main stages of the funnel: • Awareness • Consideration • Conversion Now, there are more elaborate and complex ways to depict the Buyer’s Journey, with many more stages, and depending on your business and how complex the purchase is it may make sense to develop your Sales Funnel further. But for the sake of simplicity and time, let’s focus on the main 3 stages for now and once we have a better understanding we can jump into some more comprehensive versions. Stage #1 Awareness: This is when a customer becomes aware that they have a need. So for example, if you just dropped your iPhone or Android device and the screen cracked, the moment you pick it up and realized it was busted is when you became aware of your need to fix your phone. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you are aware of the brand or service that will solve your problem. It just means you are aware that you have a problem and need a solution. At this point it’s when you typically begin to consider your options, and we transition into the second stage. Stage #2 Consideration: This is when you are actively researching options to solve your problem. Now there are a few different ways someone could solve a cracked screen problem: 1. Accept it and leave it as is if your phone isn’t cracked too bad 2. If you have insurance through your cell phone carrier, you can pay a flat fee and receive a new or refurbished phone in the mail If you do not have insurance you might consider one of two things: Either buying a new or used phone on Ebay or Amazon or you might decide that it is better to pay $75-100 bucks and just get the screen repaired on the device. For this example, let’s say that you decided to get your screen repaired because you didn’t have insurance and you just spent over $800 buying a brand new iphone and you couldn’t afford a new or used phone at the time. Now you start to do some research, you pop open Google and you search “iPhone screen repair near me” or some variation of that. The search results come up and you see the ads on google first and then as you scroll below you see the top search results. Important thing to note here, if you have previously been exposed to ads for screen repair businesses, this is where you would potentially recall the brand and because you have seen it you would be more likely to click on it as you have a higher level of trust in the brand. Once you are on the brand website you enter the Evaluation phase of the Sales Funnel / Buyer’s Journey which is often represented within the consideration stage. In this phase you are looking at the website and scanning key information that is part of your buying criteria, such as: • Price • Location • Services • Specialization • Hours of operation • Reviews The criteria will be different depending on the product/service category. For example, when you are looking for a coffee shop your distance criteria might be one of the biggest factors to your decision and if you were in a big city you probably wouldn’t been willing to go more than a few blocks for some good java. Now consider if you were looking to purchase a new car, because it is a different type of need, you might be willing to travel 5x, maybe even 10x further than the coffee shop if you found the car you wanted or the right deal. The better you can understand what your customer’s buying criteria is the better you will be able to market to them. So lastly, we get to the stage #3 which is conversion. For you a conversion might be a purchase, or a lead, or it is that they downloaded something from the website or spent a certain amount of time. Each business will determine what a conversion is differently, regardless, your prospect has made it to this stage, then that means: 1. The customer become aware of a need 2. They decided they needed to find a solution 3. They landed on your website 4. You clearly communicated why you were the solution to their need 5. You made it easy for them to purchase from you The better you understand the needs of your customers, the more effective your marketing communications will become and that will have a major impact in your business results.

This is an oversimplified explanation which provides a general perspective of how to create a sales funnel. In order to build an effective sales funnel, you'll need five essential components: targeted traffic, a squeeze page, a lead magnet, a high converting offer, and a series of follow-up emails. One thing I didn't mention inside of the video is having an auto responder for the emails. An auto responder needs to be integrated into the squeeze page in order to send your follow-up series. While you can buy an auto responder independent of a squeeze page, some squeeze pages actually have a built-in auto responder. The sole purpose of the squeeze page and the auto responder is to build your list and develop a relationship with your subscribers. Having your subscribers know, like, and trust you should always be your number one goal when it comes to internet marketing. Sending traffic, or your list straight to an offer without offering any value will only lead to unsubscribes and no sales. I'm currently a part of a program which teaches you how to put this sales funnel template into action. Sadly, I’ve spent the last 6 - 9 months just getting into more and more complicated stuff. If I knew that it would be this complicated, may be I would not have quit my job so early. Anyway, it’s a bit too late to be regretting now. I’ve spent lots of money on traffic but I have this other mentor who said something about sales funnels and he suggested I used clickfunnels. Do you use clicksfunnels to generate your own leads and customers too? What is a marketing funnel if my question doesn’t even make sense? Here goes the answer and my personal marketing funnel template I posted the question on Facebook and here is how someone defined sales and marketing funnels. " A process that takes suspects through prospects into clients/customers by showing something interesting to those who are interested, creating the desire to fulfill their wants and needs, thereby leveraging your time to serve those who are ready for a relationship." I personally would simplify it to this. A sales and marketing funnel is the path you take your prospects though in order to maximize average customer value (ACV) in your business. Some call it average transnational value. It's always a bad idea to have only one offer with one price in your business. It's an awful assumption that your ideal prospects want the same level of service and you are therefore leaving lots of money on the table. So a sales and marketing funnel can also be defined as a strategic aggregate of your product line and offers into a sequence that maximizes average transnational value (ATV). Marketing Funnel Explained with the McDonald Analogy Let's assume that a McDonald drive through receives 200 drive-through per day. If each drive through orders a $5 meal. That would result in a daily revenue of $1,000 with an average transnational value (ATV) of $5. However with the way McDonald setup their funnels, they've trained the person at the window to ask this simple question. "Would you like 2 apple pies for $1 with that?" That's called an upsell. If only 20 out of the 200 drive-through customers took them up on the upsell offer, that would be an additional $20 revenue with a total of $1,020. ATV would now become $5.10. That's a 2% increase in revenue from the same number of customers and transactions. That was 2 Marketing Funnel Stages. When you apply this in social media and digital marketing, the possibilities are endless. To maximize profits, you want to setup a minimum of 4 stages as described below. Let's dive in. Stage 1 (The What & The Why) This is the first stage that attracts cold traffic to your business. Cold traffic simply means prospects getting exposed to you and your brand for the first time ever. For example, if you are new here, you are on my stage 1 and I suggest subscriber to put you on my stage 2. When you do that, you will gain access to a free class on free traffic and free leads for life. It's a $297 value.
