An image recently released by the European Space Agency shows Egypt and the River Nile from up above-- with parts of it in stark, almost blood-red coloration. The red in the picture signifies the presence of vegetation, reports CBS News. Gathered by the new Sentinel-3A satellite, the picture taken on March 3, 2016 is teeming with detail. Egypt showcases its capital city of Cairo, as the Nile River pulses toward where it empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Sitting distantly northward are the islands of Cyprus and Crete. Somewhat counterintuitively, the Red Sea also appears in the image, on the east, just not really red at all.

Amazing before and after satellite images taken from the International Space Station show how quickly our dynamic, but fragile planet can change. The Aral Sea in central Asia was once the fourth largest lake in the world. In the 1960’s, the Soviet Union began using it to help grow crops. These images were taken just 14 years apart. Losing the moderating influence of this large body of water has made the region’s winters colder and summers hotter. In 2011, NASA captured a new volcanic island emerging in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen. It’s part of the Red Sea Rift where the African and Arabian tectonic plates meet, the island chain gained an additional rock in 2013 that doesn’t even appear in this photograph. By tapping water sources beneath the sands of Saudi Arabia, engineers turned the desert into an oasis. But with only 50 more years of groundwater supply left, the clock is ticking. Farmers could survive though by switching to greenhouse farming with drip irrigation. The Muir Glacier in Alaska has been documented for 120 years. Named for Scottish naturalist and writer John Muir, the glacier used to fill this entire inlet. This photo taken in 2004 shows how warmer temperatures have caused its shocking, 31-mile retreat. It may seem like a winter wonderland, but many of Yellowstone National Park’s 2 million-plus acres are now prone to wildfire. Longer, drier summers are a big problem. But this 2016 image actually shows how Yellowstone has recovered from the 1988 fire that consumed more than half of the park. And in 1984, Brazil plugged the Jamari river with the Samuel hydroelectric dam. The reservoir it created flooded the upstream forest. The image on the right also captures the effects of deforestation that could cut the Amazon to just 47% of its original size by 2030. The Binhai New Area in China, now a manufacturing powerhouse, was once salt farms and marshland. As you can see, the growth, which began in 1990, has extended into the Bohai Sea and is only expected to continue as the area becomes integrated into the Jing-Jin-Ji megalopolis. The delta where the Omo river meets Africa’s Lake Turkana used to be contained entirely within Ethiopia, but it’s grown so big it’s now located mainly in Kenya. It’s expanded as the lake’s water level has been reduced by less rain, higher temperatures, and agricultural activity. And here we have an extremely remote area in the harsh conditions of Kazakhstan near the Caspian Sea which shows the development of production facilities to take advantage of oil and gas deposits. Those settlements you see are to house workers, which demonstrates the lengths humans will go for a good paying job. And then we have Iran’s lake Urmia which changed color from green to red in a matter of weeks last summer. The culprit? A combination of algae and bacteria that causes the change when the weather gets hot and the lake begins to evaporate, increasing its salinity, or saltiness. Well I hope this gave you a little more appreciation for the natural world surrounding you wherever you find yourself watching this video. Until next time, for TDC, I’m Bryce Plank.

Researchers at the UNC Coastal Studies Institute (UNC CSI) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently released juvenile and adult sea turtles into the Gulf Stream in partnership with the North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island and the University of Central Florida (UCF). The project, led by Drs. Lindsay Dubbs (UNC CSI) and Larisa Avens (NOAA), is part of the ongoing NC Renewable Ocean Energy Program at UNC CSI looking at the ecological impacts of Gulf Stream utilization. A total of nine turtles were released into the Gulf Stream on May 17, five of which were loggerhead yearlings with satellite transmitters attached to their backs. The transmitters are small, lightweight devices attached to the turtle’s carapace (shell) using aquarium-grade epoxy resin and are designed to withstand up to 300 days at sea. The transmitters rely on solar power to charge the unit and satellite telemetry to pinpoint their location every time a turtle returns to the surface for air. Real-time tracking of the animals is available at http://www.seaturtle.org/tracking/?project_id=1272&dyn=1496277012 for educators and those interested in the research. All nine of the turtles released were raised or rehabilitated at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. The Aquarium aids sea turtles brought to them by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission whose volunteers monitor sea turtle nests and bring in turtles that need assistance, whether they are from an excavation or a stranding. The five yearling research subjects hatched on Bogue Banks just last fall near the Aquarium. The Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island was utilized for the staging area for attaching the transmitters and to prep for the release. Kate Mansfield, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at UCF, has been developing this method of neonatal turtle tagging for over ten years. Much of what is known about sea turtles is based on mature individuals, leaving a gap of information concerning early development. This research aims to fill that gap by revealing where these endangered species go and how they interact with the Gulf Stream. Teaming up with interdisciplinary researchers like Mansfield is just one of the ways Dr. Lindsay Dubbs is assessing the potential for ecological impacts of Gulf Stream turbines as part of the UNC CSI Renewable Ocean Energy Program. The primary focus of Dubb’s research has been on Sargassum, a floating macro-algae found in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, which attracts a wide array of marine species including sea turtles. Researchers believe neonatal and juvenile sea turtles rely on Sargassum communities as a refuge from predators and a place to find food. “Collaboration with NOAA researchers, Larisa Avens, Joanne McNeil, and April Goodman Hall, has allowed us to explore the use of the Gulf Stream by sea turtles as a component of our ecological and environmental characterization. Their expertise and experience are huge assets to the project, as are their contacts. For instance, we were very fortunate to have Kate Mansfield join us to tag these sea turtles. We are hoping to be able to track at least some of the released turtles for a few months and continue to collaborate with researchers at NOAA, UCF, and the NC Aquariums, linking sea turtles with other elements of the Gulf Stream being researched thanks to the NC Renewable Ocean Energy Program.”, said Dr. Lindsay Dubbs, Principal Investigator on the project. In addition to the sea turtle release, UNC CSI technicians took surface water and Sargassum samples from different locations within the Gulf Stream which will undergo analysis back at the Institute as researchers strive to better understand this unique pelagic habitat. During the spring and summer seasons, Iran’s lake Urmia goes from being a green body of water to a red one. During the spring and summer seasons, Iran’s lake Urmia goes from being a green body of water to a red one. NASA not only recently captured an aerial image of the change, it explained why the change occurs. The agency notes that as the summer months heat up, “…lake levels begin to drop.” That decline increases the salinity, which influences the behaviors of certain organisms. One of them, according to a scientist at the University of Stuttgart, is a microalgae which, “in conditions of high salinity and light intensity…turns red due to the production of protective carotenoids in the cells.” Another, says NASA, is, “…a group of bacteria found in water that is saturated or nearly saturated with salt. These bacteria release a red pigment…that absorbs light and converts it into energy for the bacteria. When populations of the bacteria are large enough, they can stain bodies of water.” The agency predicts, “…that a red Urmia could become increasingly common,” as, “drought and intensive water diversion for agriculture has been limiting the amount of fresh water reaching the lake.”

This video shows Himawari-8 Satellite (H-8) imageries of Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) received by the Hong Kong Observatory from 21 to 24 August 2017. It can be seen that Hato entered the northeastern part of the South China Sea on 22 August, intensifying into a typhoon and tracking west-northwest towards the coast of Guangdong. During its approach towards the Pearl River estuary on 23 August, Hato intensified further and became a super typhoon that morning over the sea areas south of Hong Kong. Hato entered western Guangdong and gradually weakened afterwards. It moved across Guangxi on 24 August and degenerated into an area of low pressure over Yunnan at night. Anyone wishing to further disseminate these satellite imageries should seek permission from JMA.

5 Aliens Life Forms on Moon and Mars Caught By NASA 5. Alien structures found on Moon Ufologists have found traces extraterrestrial civilizations on the Moon. New satellite images, allegedly taken by an orbital probe that has been orbiting the Earth's natural satellite for seven years, showed strange objects on the surface of the Moon. "UFO catchers" studied the photos and found strange-looking "formations" on the Moon. Ufologists believe that the images captured the wreckage of an alien ship that crashed on the Moon. The researchers could also see a chain of footprints that lead to the mysterious object. Alien Image found in the image of Nasa These images, were taken from the NASA Curiosity Rover droid which is scouring the surface for signs of life - but appeared to have missed it, if the alien chasers are to be believed. In this image a head, torso and legs can clearly be distinguished." Everything is there in the original image, whatever it is it looks humanoid, reminds me of the Atacama Alien, about the same size too, this one is around 6 inches." Aliens may have sent a strong signal from sun like star Astronomers engaged in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) are training their instruments on a star around 94 light years from Earth after a very strong signal was detected by a Russian telescope. An international team of researchers is now examining the radio signal and its star, HD 164595 -- described in a paper by Italian astronomer Claudio Maccone and others as a "strong candidate for SETI" -- in the hopes of determining its origin. "The signal from HD 164595 is intriguing, because it comes from the vicinity of a sun-like star, and if it's artificial, its strength is great enough that it was clearly made by a civilization with capabilities beyond those of humankind," astronomer Douglas Vakoch, president of METI International, which searches for life beyond Earth, tells CNN. Whenever a strong signal is detected, "it's a good possibility for some nearby civilization to be detected," Maccone tells CNN. Source : http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/30/health/seti-signal-hd-164595-alien-civilization/ 2. Alien skeleton found on mars A new image beamed back by the Curiosity rover is ultimate proof that the red planet had life in the distant past. new images show what appear to be fossilized remains of an Alien” creature on Mars. Looking at the image I have to say they look a bit strange, but, does strange mean Alien? Well… lets not jump to conclusions. "The relic has a large skull adorned with an ornate or decorative head piece, this could indicate that its the remains of a king, religious icon or perhaps a fallen warrior," Source : http://www.express.co.uk/news/weird/761727/Mars-giant-skeleton 1. Alien Antenna found on Moon surface Mark Sawalha, a UFO hunter based in Finland, spotted a 'strange spike' in a Nasa photo of the lunar surface. He claims is an alien antenna that could be located on the roof of an alien base. 'Aliens are using moon minerals and they have bases there too. Many other findings support this theory,' Mr Sawalha he told the Sun. While he does not spell out what these findings are, the UFO spotter claims that Nasa knows about them and has chosen not to publish them. He also speculates that the presence of aliens on the lunar surface may be the reason that Nasa hasn't sent any manned spacecraft to Earth's satellite since the Apollo missions. The images, captured by the space agency's Lunar Orbiter, appear to show a small dark 'spike' that casts a shadow. Along with a mysterious antenna-like spike, zooming in on the photo also appears to reveal a 'clear plateau' under the antenna. The Badlands Guardian In southeastern Alberta, Canada is a geological feature that, when viewed from above, looks like something far beyond the grooves in the valley that it's made from. Known as the badlands guardian, it looks just like a human wearing a headdress- the surprising thing is, though, that this hasn't been carved by human hands at all. 9. Saudi Arabian Structures The increasing clarity provided by satellite imagery has become an invaluable tool for researchers and archaeologists around the world, and are particularly useful for exploring hard to reach areas. In 2017, researchers announced the discovery of more than 400 stone structures in Saudi Arabia, each of which dates back many thousands of years. 8. The Northern Lights The Northern Lights are an atmospheric display that attracts thousands of people from around the world to the northern regions for a chance to see them. They are a humbling example of the magnitude of our planet, and the magnetic forces that are continually taking place. Many images and videos have been released by NASA, showing you what the phenomenon looks like from Space. 7. The Giant Pink Rabbit If you were walking to the top of an Italian mountain, there would probably be a range of things you’d expect to see…. But is the world’s biggest rabbit one of them? As images on Google Earth showed in 2008, on the side of the 5,000-foot high Colletto Fava mountain, in northern Italy, lay a 200-foot long pink rabbit. 6. The Lost City of Tanis The city of Tanis, which you may know from Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark, was once the capital city of Ancient Egypt but has long been lost to the sands of the desert. That was until infrared satellite images of the region were taken, and revealed not only the location but the layout and remains, of Tanis!! Yay!! 5. A Fire in the Ocean NASA has a number of satellites that continuously look at the earth, but one noticed something quite strange in 2017. Its probe, the Suomi NPP, has thermal imaging capabilities and was taking images of Brazil to monitor the development of forest fires across the country. Each hotspot can be seen on the map in red- which shows how many fires are taking place at any time. 4. Giant A Hole Finally, here's a perfect example of a neighborly rivalry that’s been caught on camera, and one that can still be seen on Google Maps! Occasionally, someone finds a hilarious image that the satellite imaging has picked up on, and that’s what happened when one user was looking at Sequim, Washington. As you can see, in the field is probably the world’s biggest A-hole! 3. Hurricane Florence Hurricane Florence was a deadly storm that hit the Carolinas in September of 2018, resulting in the deaths of 5 people, and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Hurricanes contain huge amounts of energy, but it’s only when you see them imaged from above that you get an idea of just how large and powerful they are. 2. The Desert Atlantis There are lots of legendary cities that have been lost to time, but recently one was found, which has been affectionately called the ‘Atlantis of the Sands’. For a long time, the only mention of the city called ‘Iram of the Pillars’ was in the Quran, where it was said to be full of vibrant and tall buildings that were the home of the people of Ad. At the end of the story, which saw the people being punished by Allah, the city was buried beneath the sand- never to be seen again. 1. The Millennium Falcon Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, is not somewhere most people have heard of- but it’s one of the locations that has been used for filming some of the biggest blockbusters of recent years- including ‘Thor 2’, ‘Skyfall’, ‘Fast and the Furious 6’, and the Star Wars movies. Scientific databases showed the island to be about the size of Manhattan. Discovered in 1876 by a whaling ship, Sandy Island has been included on maps for more than a century, including, obviously, on Google Earth. When the Australian scientists arrived at the location, the only thing they found was open ocean. There was no other island that could have possibly been Sandy in sight. It just wasn’t there. So what happened to it? Did it sink beneath the waves? Was it just a figment of our imagination? It's possible that what the whaling ship had seen was a pumice raft, a floating raft of frothy light rock produced by volcanoes that can float around for years before breaking up. The island had gained so much fame it actually had an obituary published for it in April 2013. In it the researchers explained how the phantom island could have remained in geographical mind and maps due to human error. This "undiscovery" made headlines around the world and reminds us that despite modern technology, there are still mysteries to be solved in the ocean. Google and National Geographic quickly removed Sandy Island from their maps. Pentagram One thing's for sure, this is no crop circle or accident, this pentagram was placed there on purpose. Located in Kazakhstan, this is sure to lead any suspicious mind to the devil’s door. The 5-pointed star surrounded by a circle measures 1,200 feet (366m) in diameter. Located on the shore of a desolate lake, the pentagram shows up crystal clear on Google Maps if you wanted to look it up yourself. When the image first rose from the underworld to the internet, many were quick to link it, and Google, to devil worship. The pentagram is an ancient symbol used by many cultures and is not always satanic. It turns out that it is simply a park. Archaeologist Emma Usmanova has worked in the region for years and explained that its pathways were purposefully designed to create the shape of a star. The star is marked by roads lined with trees, making the shape stand out. The star was a popular symbol during the Soviet Union and many guessed that the site may have been an abandoned Soviet campground. Desert Spiral Google maps has frozen this double spiral in time. When people first saw the formation located in the Egyptian desert near the coast of the Red Sea, all kinds of theories arose. Crop circle, alien message, even a portal to an alternate universe. It’s too large and perfectly designed to have been created by any one person. Well, it was actually created by three women. Known as the Desert Breath, it is a super sized art installation created by DAST Arteam, a trio of Greek artists in March of 2007. The piece covers an area of about 10 hectares (25 acres). According to the artists it’s meant to "celebrate the desert as a state of mind, a landscape for the mind.” The spiral is made up of cones made from sand and is subject to natural erosion. Over time it will disappear and become part of the desert plain once more. Syrian Holes Images of the current civil war in Syria is by no means new to the internet. While the destruction on a human level has been caught by photographers and news coverage, satellites have also recorded the damage to hundreds of archaeological sites. All six of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country, which are considered widely to be one of the oldest occupied areas on Earth have been damaged or destroyed. You can see the destruction for yourself if you were to look up Apamea via Google Earth. The location of the ancient Roman city is now a sea of pockmarked holes stretching over the entire area, left by looters since the start of the wr. Looters and treasure hunters have dug over 4000 holes looking for uncovered treasures to sell on the black market to finance the wr. These holes are about 2-3 meters across and in some cases are used to store weapons. Airplane Graveyard This might be one of the biggest, and coolest, graveyards you ever see. Located in Tucson, Arizona, the Davis Monthan Air Force Base is where U.S. military planes often find their final resting place. The cemetery stretches 2,600 acres and has been nicknamed “The Boneyard.” While the site is closed to the general public, modern day technology holds nothing sacred, not even the dead, and images of it are available for all to see on Google Earth (and other interactive maps). And it is something to see indeed.

Check out these top unexplained mysteries of the deep ocean. From strange sounds captured in the deep sea by hydrophones such as the bloop, the train, and julia, to gigantic whirlpools, biggest underwater falls and the milky bioluminescent sea phenomenon. Are deep sea monsters living deep in the ocean? Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "12 Historical Treasures In The Middle East DESTROYED!" video here: https://youtu.be/Nt9mWUpTp1U Watch our "Most HAUNTED Places In The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/h9elrDhft9w Watch our "Most DANGEROUS Religious Cults Ever!" video here: https://youtu.be/VTD1qabI3v0 9. Underwater Falls Voted one of the most beautiful places on Earth, Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. On the Southwestern tip of the island you will find a fascinating illusion. When viewed from above, a runoff of sand and silt deposits creates the impression of an ‘underwater waterfall’. But did you know there are actually real underwater waterfalls? Seven waterfalls have been discovered deep underwater. The tallest waterfall on Earth is not Angel Falls, but an underwater waterfall called Denmark Strait Cataract located in the Atlantic ocean between Greenland and Iceland. It is the world's highest underwater waterfall, with water falling almost 11,500 feet and carries 175 million cubic feet of water per second. It is caused due to temperature differences in the water on either side of the strait. Cold water is denser than warm water. And the eastern side of the strait is a lot colder than the western side. So when the waters meet, the cold water sinks below the warmer water, creating a strong downward flow, which is considered a waterfall. And it's not just waterfalls that are under the ocean. There are huge secret rivers, complete with rapids and islands that flow down the sea shelves out into the desert plains creating river banks and flood plains. Here's a picture of the river Cenote Angelita under the sea of Mexico. These salty rivers carry sediments and minerals and could be vital in sustaining life. The world's sixth largest river, by volume, is below the Black Sea. It is 350 times larger than the Thames and 150 feet deep in places. 8. Milky Sea Phenomenon For over 400 years, sailors told tales of a mysterious event that takes place far out in the Indian Ocean. They would come across miles and miles of milky glowing waters, sometimes stretching as far as the eye could see. In 2005, a group of scientists led by Dr. Steven Miller of the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey, Calif., decided to take a closer look at this story to see if it was true. They managed to register about 235 observations and get a satellite image that showed an area of low lighting in the Indian Ocean about the size of Connecticut. Their samples that they collected indicated the presence of a type of bioluminescent bacteria in the water, known as Vibrio harveyi. This isn't the same kind of bacteria that you might see in waves that use their bright light to ward off predators. This bioluminescent bacteria may actually use light to attract fish, since its favorite place to live is inside a fish's gut. Scientists' guess is that since they only emit a very faint light on their own, they have to gather together to make an impact. Their collective glow can grow to massive, milky sea proportions when their numbers swell to a huge amount -- think 40 billion trillion. They may also congregate to colonize algae. Sounds like a party! It is still only a guess since Dr. Miller and his colleagues haven't determined exactly what causes the bacteria to gather. 7. Unexplained sounds Of course dark, creepy fog can make you jump at anything that goes bump in the night. But what about things that go "bloop" in the sea? With names like "The Bloop," "Train" and "Julia," the sounds have been captured by hydrophones, or underwater microphones, monitored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The decidedly nonspooky nicknames for these sounds do little to dispel the mystery surrounding them. In 1997, NOAA hydrophones 3,000 miles apart picked up one of the loudest sounds ever recorded off the southern coast of South America: the Bloop (which sounds exactly like its name, a bloop). The Bloop mimics marine animal sounds in some ways, but if it were some kind of sea creature it would have to be almost the size of the Eiffel tower for that sound to be heard from 3,000 miles away. So what made the sound? It's anyone's guess but deep-sea monsters aside, NOAA holds the most likely explanation for The Bloop is that it was the sound of a large iceberg fracturing. Sure.... Another weird noise known as Julia sounds almost like someone whining or maybe even singing under water. The eastern equatorial Pacific autonomous array (the fancy name for the network of hydrophones) picked up this strange sound that lasted 15 seconds in 1999.

From a heart shaped island to a giant bunny these are some of the weirdest google map images you won't believe actually exist! 10 - You’re not safe anywhere! So besides the vehicles that capture the images for Google Maps, there are also trikes, trolleys, snowmobiles, SUV’s and satellites that capture the images throughout the year. So you are really not safe anywhere! So when this poor woman needed to go – she really needed to go. What she didn’t need, was Google taking a picture of her doing her business. Granted she did have a whiz on the side of the road in broad daylight – but I doubt she ever imagined that she would be seeing this image online! 9 - How’s this for a “space” ship… This is the SS Jassim, and it’s one of the largest ship wrecks visible from Google Earth. It’s no surprise really, as the ferry is 80.54 metres long and 13 metres wide. Just a little bit of FYI, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration, there are roughly 1 million shipwrecks at this exact point in time. It was in 2003 that the SS Jassim sank just off the coast of Sudan. 8 - What do they teach our kids? Imagine asking someone what school they go to, and they reply – Oh, the school with the giant penis. I’m sure you will be a bit surprised, but it’s the truth. The Clancy Catholic School has been vandalized with the etchings of 3 giant penises. The school has been struggling to get the image removed from Google Maps, and have had no luck so far. 7 - No joke… Google Maps has really uncovered many things that some people would rather forget. This image has brought out buried memories for Jose Barrera, who believes that the image he is seeing, is the body of his deceased 14-year-old son, who was killed in 2009. 6 - Speculate away… because there are loads of “unexplained” images just like this doing the rounds on Google Maps. Sad to say though, there is no alien involvement and all of them have a pretty logical explanation. Desert Breath began in 1995, and is still visible after all this time. It’s over a million square feet, and found in the eastern Sahara Desert, bordering the Red Sea. The team displaced 8000 cubic metres of sand to create these incredible shapes. 5 - We found him… That’s Wally of course, and this was a project by Melanie Coles. For her final year art project, she created a massive Where’s Wally and popped it on the roof of a building in Vancouver. She challenged people to play using Google Earth, and offered a real life version of the very popular game. She did of course get an A for her efforts. 4 - Sheer beauty This is the Grand Prismatic Spring,in the Yellowstone National Park, and Google Maps has captured its beauty brilliantly. 3 - Say cheese There are many Google Map images of faces. There’s an Oprah Winfrey Maze, Pumkins sketched into fields, Suns appearing in crops, the smiling face of the Versailles Gardens, we’ve seen “lips” and bare bottoms appearing out of hay bales and trees… but this image is just so unique. It’s of a native American Indian peering out from the hills of Alberta, in Canada. A mix between old and new, as it appears like she is wearing headphones. 2 - Hop to it… If you were to go for a hike in Northern Italy’s mountainside sometime between now and 2025, don’t be surprised when you come across this gigantic bunny. It’s 55 meters long, and was meant to make its audience feel tiny, like I Gulliver’s travels. It’s made from straw and fabric, and will decompose naturally. The say by 2025 it will be gone. 1 - Just for the love of it… And our last image – just because we love what we do… here is a heart shaped island, just for you. Made famous by Google Maps, this 130 000-foot islet is now a lover’s hot spot. Apparently no one lives on the island, so the owner said it would be the perfect place for a romantic getaway. So book your next romantic getaway now… just be careful that Google Maps doesn’t snap you in the act!

Seventeen lost pyramids are among the buildings identified in a new satellite survey of Egypt. More than 1,000 tombs and 3,000 ancient settlements were also revealed by looking at infra-red images which show up underground buildings. Initial excavations have already confirmed some of the findings, including two suspected pyramids. The work has been pioneered at the University of Alabama at Birmingham by US Egyptologist Dr Sarah Parcak. She says she was amazed at how much she and her team has found. We were very intensely doing this research for over a year. I could see the data as it was emerging, but for me the Aha moment was when I could step back and look at everything that wed found and I couldnt believe we could locate so many sites all over Egypt. To excavate a pyramid is the dream of every archaeologist, she said. The team analysed images from satellites orbiting 700km above the earth, equipped with cameras so powerful they can pin-point objects less than 1m in diameter on the earths surface. Infra-red imaging was used to highlight different materials under the surface. Test excavations Ancient Egyptians built their houses and structures out of mud brick, which is much denser than the soil that surrounds it, so the shapes of houses, temples and tombs can be seen. It just shows us how easy it is to underestimate both the size and scale of past human settlements, says Dr Parcak. And she believes there are more antiquities to be discovered: These are just the sites [close to] the surface. There are many thousands of additional sites that the Nile has covered over with silt. This is just the beginning of this kind of work. BBC cameras followed Dr Parcak on her nervous journey when she travelled to Egypt to see if excavations could back up what her technology could see under the surface. In the BBC documentary Egypts Lost Cities, they visit an area of Saqqara (Sakkara) where the authorities were not initially interested in her findings. But after being told by Dr Parcak that she had seen two potential pyramids, they made test excavations, and they now believe it is one of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt. But Dr Parcak said the most exciting moment was visiting the excavations at Tanis. Theyd excavated a 3,000-year-old house that the satellite imagery had shown and the outline of the structure matched the satellite imagery almost perfectly. That was real validation of the technology. The Egyptian authorities plan to use the technology to help - among other things - protect the countrys antiquities in the future. During the recent revolution, looters accessed some well-known archaeological sites. We can tell from the imagery a tomb was looted from a particular period of time and we can alert Interpol to watch out for antiquities from that time that may be offered for sale. She also hopes the new technology will help engage young people in science and will be a major help for archaeologists around the world. It allows us to be more focused and selective in the work we do. Faced with a massive site, you dont know where to start. Its an important tool to focus where were excavating. It gives us a much bigger perspective on archaeological TAGS: abc breaking news, bbc, bbc football, bbc iplayer, bbc news, bbc news america, bbc persian, bbc sport, bbc weather, bbc world news, breaking celebrity news, breaking election news, breaking late news, breaking local news, breaking music news, breaking news, breaking news alerts, breaking news canada, breaking news headlines, breaking news in atlanta, breaking news in nigeria, breaking news india, breaking news pensacola florida, breaking news plane crash, breaking news story, breaking sports news, business expensive news home media world, christian world news, cnn, cnn breaking news, cnn money, cnn news, cnn news breaking news, cnn news world, detroit breaking news, global news, headline, headline news, health care technology news, hot latest global news, internet technology news, las vegas breaking news, latest breaking news, latest celebrity news, latest information technology news, latest music news, latest news, latest news headlines, latest news update, latest sports news, live breaking news, local breaking news, local news today, msn breaking news, nbc breaking news, nbc world news, news of the world, news report us world, news today news, news updated daily, solar technology news, sports news today, technology news, the latest news, today news, us news and world, us news and world report, us news and world report magazine, us news and world report web site, us news world report, world news, world news daily, world news headlines

SOHAE, NORTH KOREA — U.S. officials say North Korea has been constructing several artificial islands for at least five years in the Yellow Sea near the City of Sohae. Satellite images reveal that five artificial islands for unknown purposes have been erected near Sohae, a known testing site for intercontinental ballistic missile technology. According to the Diplomat, three of the islands seem to have paved, rectangular slots which could be used to accommodate North Korean ballistic missile and its launcher. Other islands could be used to host underground missile silos, though it is not yet clear whether the islands can support such structures. Experts say the islands are more likely used for shorter-range missiles, such as Scuds, if they are indeed used for missile launchers. However, according to Ryan Barenklau, chief executive of Strategic Sentinel, a Washington-based intelligence firm, there isn’t enough information to determine the purpose of the islands so they may even be used for agriculture. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. The European Space Agency's Sentinel-2A satellite recently captured images of a ship amid a beautiful but toxic algal bloom spread across the warm waters of the Baltic Sea. In a stunning visual captured by satellite, a seemingly tiny ship darts through a massive patch of swirling green algae that has made the Baltic sea toxic for now. The image of the vast algal bloom was relayed to Earth by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2A satellite only weeks after reaching orbit. Weather conditions such as the kind experienced recently can produce large blooms which are toxic to some species, at least partly because needed oxygen is removed from the water. This imbalance hurts the ecosystem and the commerce that relies on it. The satellite that gathered the image should continue to be instrumental in better assessing biological activity in the water. Craig Donlon, an ocean scientist with the agency noted, “To support safe aquaculture and tourism we need to have better knowledge of the ecosystem and physical dynamics in the upper ocean, which is expressed in the horizontal structures we can see in the Sentinel-2A imagery."
