Inside Gosha Rubchinskiy’s Post-Soviet Generation

14:57
In this episode of Global Street Style, i-D heads to Russia for exclusive backstage access to Gosha Rubchinskiy’s spring/summer 18 show in St. Petersburg, and to meet the prolific post-1991 generation carving out their own future. This is the first generation of Russian youth to have grown up after the fall of the Soviet Union, and are looking inwards to the Eastern Bloc for inspiration, rather than the wider Western world. With designers like Gosha Rubchinskiy popularising post-Soviet style around the world, we discover what effect the former Soviet Union has had on modern creativity, the impact of this cultural explosion on the rest of the world, and what it is to be young in Russia today. Russian Designers Launch Moscow Fashion Week with Spring Show

01:39
Russian designers Slava Zaitsev and Alena Akhmadulina show their new collections at the start of Russian Fashion Week. Full Story: Veteran Russian designer Slava Zaitsev and famous fashion designer Alena Akhmadulina showed their new collections on Friday at the start of Russian Fashion Week. Walking along a catwalk into a hall packed with guests from Moscow's media, showbiz and fashion worlds, models wore glamorous evening wear teamed with extravagant hats. Zaitsev's autumn/winter 2013 collection was surprisingly full of bright colors, such as yellow and pink. His collection for men was more of a classic style this time, full of standard accessories such as bow-tie and classic shoes. But there were some surprises here too, with some classic suits in soft green, brown and creamy white. Meanwhile, Akhmadulina remained loyal to her classy, smart, and timeless style. [Alena Akhmadulina, Russian Designer]: "We dedicate every one of our collections to a fairytale. This time it's a fairytale called 'Three fur coats'. It's about the Russian North. We will open it up via various images of the Russian North." Akhmadulina's designs were in her traditional "a la russe"-style. Models wore fur coats, wolf and owl-skin patterns, silk mono-colored dresses, Russian scarves and wool beads—working the catwalk to techno-covers of Russian folk songs. Fashion week visitors liked the collections. [Alexander, Fashion Week Visitor]: "It's a great show. It's good that Moscow has it. You can see the latest trends and stock up for the next season." Russian Fashion Week aims to showcase new designers from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine over the next few days. Counterfeit Culture Moscow: Inside the Russian Fashion Black Market

16:55
For the second installment of Counterfeit Culture, Highsnobiety’s first-ever documentary series, we headed to Moscow to find what’s driving Russia’s thriving market for fake streetwear. Russia’s counterfeit industry stretches back decades, to when Communism isolated the country from Western products. Now, almost 30 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia’s borders are open, but a fragile economy, international sanctions and low wages has kept the country’s demand for fakes alive and well. But this Russian artist is putting them side by side in her series “Fashion & Nature”. Part of her “1 + 1” project, it juxtaposes dresses straight from the walkway with grand vistas of nature. And while the designers’ inspiration is largely unknown, the resemblance is uncanny. A sort of macro level camouflage meant for giants, if you will. Liliya Hudyakova works with photo-composition. “1 + 1″ is the over-arching theme of her works, comparing people to stuff ranging from space to flowers. Her “Fashion And [Word]” series is probably the biggest, doing such interesting comparisons like Beyonce’s dress and king Ludwig’s bedroom in Linderhoff Castle, Bavaria. And here’s people think themselves smart for comparing Rihanna’s dress with an omelet. More info: Instagram | Facebook | Behance | Tumblr (h/t: boredpanda)

Karl Lagerfeld - fashion designer and icon | DW Documentary

42:26
Karl Lagerfeld - the name stands for much more than just fashion. What makes the fashion icon so successful? Who’s the man behind the sunglasses? Designer, artist, fashion icon, also known as "Kaiser Karl." No living fashion designer, let alone a German one, is as celebrated as Karl Lagerfeld. On September 10, the man with the trademark ponytail and sunglasses will celebrate his 85th birthday - it’s believed. From dawn to late morning, Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel, Fendi and his own signature brand - a combined workload of up to 15 collections a year. A workhorse who never takes breaks or even a vacation, he is also a photographer and filmmaker. His passion for fashion was awakened by a Dior show in Hamburg in 1950. Four years later, at the age of 17, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld recounts his beginnings in the industry, as well as his upper class background and childhood in Schleswig-Holstein. Karl Lagerfeld was greatly influenced by his mother, whom he describes as his personal style icon. Karl Lagerfeld's caustic comments are notorious and dreaded by those at the receiving end. As an artist, Karl Lagerfeld works in several media, from pictures and photographs to book illustrations and videos. The documentary follows Karl Lagerfeld to exhibition openings, during the hectic preparations for his fashion shows, and at photo shoots in Paris as it seeks to uncover the man behind the mask. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. "RUSSIAN DOLLS" by Adeline Ziliox // Fashion Designer// directed by Jonas B.

03:03
The first video clip "Russian Dolls" from the French Fashion Designer, Adeline Ziliox. Adeline Ziliox, is pleased to present her first video clip "Russian Dolls". Each season since 2007, she conjures a new wardrobe for the urban woman of character, independence, determination and elegance. Although often labeled as “urban chic", Adeline Ziliox’s creations are not limited to a particular style. Her designs are timeless and defy the laws dictated by the fashion industry. The bold mixture of fabrics, the precision in the often ultra-feminine tailoring, the meticulous finishes and the hidden details squarely position her work in the realm of Haute Couture. Creation of very limited editions and unique items confirms her position at the high end of the world of fashion designers. For Adeline Ziliox, everything is conducive to creativity: a picture, a work of art, a sentence, a piece of music, a smell, a feeling, an emotion ... In this collection, Russia and its cultural riches were the starting point of her creative process. She took her inspiration from its architecture, fashion, music, crafts and reinterpreted them through her original vision to create two parallel universes: the first is rough, strong, uncompromising and the other is soft, poetic, straight out of a fantasy dream. She also studied at the Modapelle Academy in Milan and now divides her time between the Italian city, Moscow and London. The stylish bride carried a bunch of white and pink roses and wore a long veil, which her husband placed over her face as they made their way into the venue as guests captured the moment on camera for Instagram. The bride's arrival was heralded by a quartet of drummers in smart military style uniforms, and once inside, she removed her jacket to reveal the delicate lace top and sleeves of her dress. For the meal, the happy couple sat on white throne style chairs at the top table, which was decorated with the same white and pink roses as the bride's bouquet. Five hundred guests were invited to the lavish celebrations, which were amazingly planned in just four months after Violetta announced her engagement to Daniel in February. They were delighted when the bride and groom took to the dancefloor to perform a traditional dance later in the evening, with many capturing the moment on film for Instagram. One day of celebrating was not enough and the wedding continued into the following day. Violetta changed into another beautiful gown to continue the party - a delicate pink gown with an all over embellishment of pink and white petals.

RUSSIA FASHION WEEK

04:53
Russian designers launch Moscow Fashion Week with spring show Veteran Russian designer Slava Zaitsev and famous fashion designer Alena Akhmadulina showed their new collections on Friday (March 29) at the start of Russian fashion Week. Walking along a catwalk into a hall packed with guests from Moscow's media, showbiz and fashion worlds, models wore glamorous evening wear teamed with extravagant hats. Zaitsev's autumn/winter 2013 collection was surprisingly full of bright colours such as yellow and pink. His collection for men was more of a classic style this time, full of standard accessories such as bow-tie and classic shoes. But there were some surprises here too as some of the classic suits were done in soft green, brown and creamy white colours. Meanwhile, Akhmadullina remained loyal to her classy, smart, and timeless style. "We dedicate every one of our collections to a fairytale," Akhmadulina said before the show. "This time it's a fairytale called Three fur coats, it's about the Russian North. We will open it up via various images of the Russian North." She also said that the pret-a-porter was not established in Russia, but noted that the situation has been changing as the Russian government has been more supportive of the industry lately. "I know that an order has been given and the Russian government pays huge attention to consumer goods manufacturing and it will support and develop it in those directions where designers can't help themselves," she added. "It is possible some designers' centres with wide a range of specialists and full cycle manufacturing will be created in Moscow. This will definitely help designers to cover up some of the gaps." Akhmadulina's designs were done in her traditional "a la russe"-style. Models were wearing fur coats, wolf and owl-skin patterns, silk mono-coloured dresses, Russian scarves and wool beads, trotting the catwalk to techno-covers of Russian folk songs. Fashion week visitors said they liked the collections presented by both designers, adding that having such an event in Moscow was quite good in itself. "It's a great show. It's good that Moscow has it. You can see the latest trends and stock up for the next season," Fashion week visitor Alexander said. Another visitor, Nastia, said: "It's cool. This is already not our first time. We saw the last few shows. We come here regularly. It's cool. Fashion is always cool." Russian Fashion Week aims to showcase new designers from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine over the next few days.

A new line of beads comes from the Kwagala Project, an organization dedicated to empowering women victimized by human trafficking and/or the commercial sex trade. Through the Kwagala Project, trafficking survivors in Uganda are enrolled in a design school called Free Thereafter, where they learn the art of bead-making. "Free Thereafter is teaching them something that's viable in their community," Kwagala Project's executive director Kristen Hendricks told HuffPost Style, "but also that we can leverage on our side," meaning it's something women will actually want to buy." Russian Designers Lead the Way from W Magazine W featured hot new Russian Designers in sartorial frocks that give us a throwback to the days of yore with a modern twist. The designers are: Maria Bogdanovich (former ballerina at Bolshoi), Olya Thompson (another former Bolshoi Dancer), Natalia Alaverdian, Polina Kitsenko Kitsenko says, it was easy to spot a Russian woman on the streets of Paris. "She was blonde with sharp stilettos, and her clothes were all tight and supershort," explains the 36-year-old creative director of Podium, Russia's most forward-thinking boutique chain. "Now Russian women are looking at what's happening worldwide to determine how they shop and dress." ustin Timberlake Justin is the #1 #hashtag topic on twitter this year. I find this to be illuminating. From his music, videos, and films, he has taken it to a whole new level. We compiled J-Timb's TOP 3 Looks of 2013 so far, they are: casual urban wear...a t-shirt with a crisp black and white design, a nice plaid suite, and a tuxedo jacket with texture. CFDA/ Vogue's Fashion Night Out Tom Ford Gave Keynote at CFDA/Vogue's Fashion Night Out "Trust your instincts when it comes to design." Tom Ford could have written those words out on note cards and handed them out to all the attendees at Monday night's CFDA/VogueFashion Fund dinner, where his keynote address was filled with such pithy advice to designersyoung and not so young. Ford's words of wisdom ranged from pragmatic and insightful to amusing and, in true Tom style, a little provocative and even risqué. "If you're ever in talks with a potential investor or financial backer, and they bring in their wife's blouse to show you for inspiration, run," Ford said. "If a potential investor has a wife or daughter who just loves fashion and can't wait to come in and talk to you about the collection, run. If your president or chief executive officer thinks they know the difference between dark burgundy and aubergine, fire them. My point is, if your brand is to have a strong identity, it must come from you." Let's take a look at some of the luminaries in attendance, shall we? In attendance were: Oscar De La Renta, Anna Wintour, Zac Posen And Sarah and Kate Mulleavy. Slava Zaitsev - Russia's fashion survivor

04:46
(12 Oct 2016) SLAVA ZAITSEV - RUSSIA'S FASHION SURVIVOR At 78, fashion designer Slava Zaitsev may look frail but he still makes two new collections every year, one of which premieres Thursday (13 OCT. 2016) at Russian Fashion Week. The son of a laundress, Zaitsev grew up in a communal apartment in the Soviet Union, where fashion was officially outlawed. Zaitsev was barred from most schools as the son of an "enemy of the people" - his father was a Soviet prisoner of war in Germany who was sent to a Gulag camp once he got back home. The designer was accepted to a local chemical technical school - where he got straight A's - before being sent to Moscow to study at the Textile Institute. In the 1960s, Zaitsev was producing bold designs and colors in a country uniformly dressed in drab clothing, attracting the admiration of rare foreign visitors. A French magazine profiled the young designer, calling him a "Russian Dior." That enraged Zaitsev's boss at Moscow's one and only hub of fashion design. Reflecting the Soviet Union's disdain for individual personalities, his boss wrote "we have 60 Diors!" in a local paper, according to Zaitsev. Zaitsev was one of the first Soviet designers to show his collection on catwalks in the West as the Iron Curtain fell in the 1980s. But he was disappointed in what he saw as the money-driven nature of the American fashion industry. On his first visit abroad, Zaitsev presented his collection at New York's Waldorf Astoria in 1987. The friendly staff assigned to him to help with the show all disappeared by the time it was over, he recalls. "They got their money and left. This was a complete disappointment for me that money was more important in the West - I still can't get used to the idea," he says. Despite his age, Zaitsev is dreaming of venturing into the mass market. His House of Fashion - which makes made-to-measure clothes - is looking for investors to launch A collection, something "not too cheap but really good quality," he says. Zaitsev has even already found production facilities in his hometown of Ivanovo, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) north-east of Moscow.
