A good quality low cost marine navigation chart software that has IP AIS option included for free. ICharts are east on the eye and better to view than Seapilot and Navionics. Low cost but this is currently a basic app with no AIS alarms and no advanced routing options. But you can import and export GPX files so you can import weather routed converted file out of Squid sailing. Could do with having extra features such as - Boat icon, AIS alarms, Anchor alarm, adjustable tide hight soundings (auto would be nice) ENC auto help land and object/area advoidance weather routing. https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/store/p/i-boating-gps-nautical-marine-charts-offline-sea-lake-river-navigation-maps-for-fishing-sailing-boating-yachting-diving-cruising/9nblggh69cv8 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skiracer.nautical_astore_lite&hl=en_GB https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/i-boating-gps-nautical-marine/id994992062?mt=8 Best weather routing software http://www.squid-sailing.com/en/

This video is a basic introduction to sea charts. We will go through how to read depths and bridge heights, plot magnetic and true courses from the compass rose using a parallel ruler and how to measure distance in nautical miles. In particular detail is information on converting from magnetic to true and from true to magnetic. This is on of the fundamental skills required for coastal navigation.

Do you know how the early sailors navigate the oceans? The technology today makes it real easy to navigate the oceans. But it's very interesting to know how the early sailors managed to navigate without it. There's a lot of history on it. I tried my best to compile some important and interesting parts of it into this video. A slick way to do echart navigation on google earth, as well as viewing all NOAA charts and even a fast way to download the RNC versions. NOTE: WE UPDATED THE LINK BELOW JAN 16, 2018 (thanks to PorcineJim ) Main link at NOAA describing the process https://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/data/gis-data-and-services.html#seamless-raster-nautical-chart-services Direct link to the Google Earth file we need https://seamlessrnc.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/rnc/noaa_rncs.kmz ( Note this only works with US charts because they offer free echarts, whereas most other nations do not. Brazil may be an exception, but they do not offer the Google Earth function that i know of. )

Here are the different types and scales of charts: Sailing charts, where the scale is 1:500,000 and smaller, are used for offshore navigation beyond sight of land. The general charts have a scale of 1:150,000 - 1:500,000, and give wide-ranging offshore coverage with sufficient inshore detail to make landfall sightings easy. Fisheries charts use these scales. The coastal chart uses a scale of 1:50,000 - 1:150,000, and is used to show uninterrupted wide-ranging coverage with adequate inshore detail to make landfall sightings easy. Fisheries charts also use these scales. The approach chart has a scale of 1:15,000 - 1:50,000, and is used for approaching coasts where great detail is required. Harbour charts, which have a scale is1:5,000 - 1:15,000, are used for navigation in harbors or intricate, hazardous, shoal-infested waters. Bar Scales: a bar scale is a graphic scale represented by a line or a bar that is subdivided into nautical miles, feet, or meters. This bar is used for measuring distances on the chart. Elevation Contours: these are lines connecting points of equal elevation. They are a graphical way of showing the shape and slope of hills and mountains that might be helpful in identifying them on the chart. Once identified, they can help identify your location on the water.

** GET THE GEAR ON AMAZON** https://www.amazon.com/shop/jimcyr This quick video shows you how you can use your GPS to find your position on a Topo map using the UTM / NAD 83 format & datum. There is a LOT to learn about map reading which is useful when your GPS fails. Anybody with tips can post them as video replies or comments. When using your GPS in conjunction with a topo map, is to make sure that Datum is the same on the GPS as on your map. For example, out of the box GPS receivers are set to WGS84 while most topo maps are probably NAD83. This is important to set since it will make a different where you are on the map. The next setting to change is the position format. Depending on the age of the map, it will be using UTM number format instead of GPS friendly lat/log format. Position format is much like a phone number, you can write it in various ways, but they all mean the same thing. Now you can take a set of coordinates from the GPS, either grab a waypoint, look up a phototagged image. Here we want to get the position where we are and where we want to go, like a visitor centre. Write down the UTM coordinates on to a piece of paper. Take the corner of the piece of paper and mark out the scale, using UTM each tick on a grid is divisible by 10. So you can take each digit in a UTM and narrow down on the map by 100m in this example. #avoidingchores

Thank you. Some of the best places on earth are also the most difficult to navigate. If you don't want to rip off your rudder or open a hole in your hull watch this! We explain or on-board navigation system, the apps we use and the way in which we tackle this blue planets more challenging areas. There are a whole load of resources out there, so why not use them? We learned how best to tackle reef and bommie-strewn shallow waters in the Red Sea, then again in the Maldives and more recently in SE Asia. Charts just won't hack it in this kind of scenario, you need all your wits about you and senses on full alert to avoid a disaster...but it's worth it, because some of the places we've eased into have been simply spectacular.
