19 Colorful Plants for Shade Gardens

03:42
19 Colorful Plants for Shade Gardens Plant some of these beauties for great garden color, even in shade 1.Astilbe hybrids Feathery, plumelike flowers have an airy quality; they come in shades of pink, salmon, lavender, red, and white above fernlike foliage. 2.Amethyst flower (Browallia hybrids) If you love blue flowers, this annual is a must. Amethyst flower has star-shaped blooms of brilliant blue and sky blue, as well as violet and white; they nearly cover the 1- to 2-foot-tall plants.  3.Begonia (Tuberous) For sizzling color in pots and hanging baskets, it’s hard to beat these perennials—each blooms as flouncy and vibrant as a Mexican dancer’s skirt. Flowers come in every shade but blue. \ 4.Coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides) This perennial's brilliantly colored leaves range from ruby red and yellow to pink, orange, and blends. But for a lightly shaded patio, we’re partial to lime green hues like ‘Dappled Apple’, sunny yellow ‘Lemon Twist’, or brown and lime ‘Chocolate Drop’. 5.Copper plant (Acalypha wilkesiana) Bronze-green, red, and orange hues splash these long oval leaves like watercolors that have run. More colorful than many flowers, copper plant is hardy only to 40°, so it’s often used as an annual. But we grow it in a big caramel-colored pot that basks on a lath-covered patio in summer, then gets moved indoors for winter.  6.Dead Nettle (Lamium maculatum) There’s nothing “dead” about this beauty; the leaves of its many varieties have a silvery sheen that nearly glows in shade. ‘Ann Greenaway’ has green leaves edged in yellow, with a silver stripe down the center, and pink flowers. ‘Beacon Silver’ has silvery gray leaves with green edges, and pink flowers. ‘White Nancy’ has silvery gray-green leaves with green edges, and white flowers. Spreading to 3 feet wide, this perennial is great in hanging baskets and as pot edging. 7.Fancy-leafed caladium (Caladium bicolor) Translucent as stained glass, caladium’s large arrow-shaped leaves on long stalks are banded or blotched with various combinations of red, rose, pink, white, silver, bronze, or green. Outside the tropics, grow these tender perennials in rich, well-drained soil in big pots to display on a shaded patio in summer. We love the combo pictured: 8.Flowering maple (Abutilon hybrids) Bell-shaped blooms of yellow, white, pink, orange, or red dangle in clusters among maple-like green leaves that are sometimes variegated with white.  9.Garden hydrangea For light shade, it’s tough to beat Hydrangea macrophylla. The shrub is easy to grow, needing little fussing beyond watering, occasional feeding, and light pruning once a year. 10.Geranium cranesbill True geraniums—which make fluffy little mounds of foliage and small flowers in white or shades of pink or blue—thrive in the light shade of high trees.  11.Heuchera ‘Electric Lime’ heuchera is the perfect accent for a mostly green garden; its big maple-like leaves add a pop of bright lime that’s guaranteed to wake up darker green shrubbery. Cluster several plants at the front of a border for striking contrast. 12.Heucherella Heart-shaped leaves on clumping plants 5 inches tall and 1 foot wide come in many beautiful colors. 13.Hosta hybrids Hostas come in a virtual wardrobe of shapes, textures, and colors. Depending on variety, their leaves may be heart-shaped, round, oval, or lance-shaped; glossy or dull; smooth or quilted; blue, green, or yellow. 14.Impatiens Of all the impatiens out there, in a dizzying array of color choices, we’re partial to the New Guinea hybrids for their large leaves and 3-inch-wide flowers of pink, lavender, purple, red, and more. 15.Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’) Gracefully arching leaves give this perennial grass the look of a cooling fountain. 16.Meadow rue (Thalictrum rochebrunianum ‘Lavender Mist’)  Puffs of small lavender-blue flowers and lacy green leaves   17.Mirror plant (Coprosma ‘Tequila Sunrise’) Glossy, jewel-like foliage blends lots of yummy colors on this amazing tender evergreen shrub. 18.Persian Shield (Strobilanthes dyeranus)  Exotic any way you look at them, leaves of this soft-stemmed shrub are a gorgeous blend of purple and silver with sea green ribs; their undersides are bright purple.  19.Yesterday-today-and-tomorrow (Brunfelsia pauciflora ‘Floribunda’)  A quick-change color show is what you get from this aptly named plant. Blossoms turn from purple (“yesterday”) to lavender (“today”) to white (“tomorrow”). sources : http://www.sunset.com/garden/flowers-plants/color-plants-for-shade#yesterday-today-tomorrow

Hiking the Green Gardens Trails in Gros Morne, Newfoundland

03:26
Footage from a recent hike in Gros Morne National Park. This video shows clips from the short trail (Long Pond to the Coast — 9 km return). I also included a quick clip from the drive to the trailhead which shows the Tablelands — a section of the earth's mantle that was thrust up through the crust. This is one of the only places on earth where you can see this (read more about it here: http://marieaway.com/walking-on-the-earths-mantle-in-newfoundland/). This is a gorgeous hike, with platforms for tents along the coast (which you can see in the video). It took us about 3 hours return, including a 30-35 min break for lunch on the beach. This is also my first travel video filmed entirely on my iPhone 6. This song belongs to Secret Garden (duo). Secret Garden features the Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and the Norwegian composer-pianist Rolf Løvland. "Sleepsong" features artist Fionnuala Gill (Saoirse). Lyrics: Lay down your head and I'll sing you a lullaby Back to the years of loo-li lai-lay And I'll sing you to sleep and I'll sing you tomorrow Bless you with love for the road that you go May you sail far to the far fields of fortune With diamonds and pearls at your head and your feet And may you need never to banish misfortune May you find kindness in all that you meet May there always be angels to watch over you To guide you each step of the way To guard you and keep you safe from all harm Loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay May you bring love and may you bring happiness Be loved in return to the end of your days Now fall off to sleep, I'm not meaning to keep you I'll just sit for a while and sing loo-li, lai-lay May there always be angels to watch over you To guide you each step of the way To guard you and keep you safe from all harm Loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay Loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay... I don't own anything.

Backyard aquaponics: DIY system to farm fish with vegetables

11:05
Rob Torcellini bought a $700 greenhouse kit to grow more vegetables in his backyard. Then he added fish to get rid of a mosquito problem and before long he was a committed aquaponic gardener. Now his 10 by 12 foot greenhouse is filled with not only vegetables, but fish. And the best part is: the poo from that fish is what fertilizes his garden. Aquaponics combines fish farming (aquaculture) with the practice of raising plants in water (hydroponics). It's organic by definition: instead of using chemical fertilizers, plants are fertilized by the fish poo (and pesticides/herbicides can't be introduced to kill pests because they could harm the fish). Since the plants don't need dirt, aquaponics allows gardeners to produce more food in less space. And in addition to the vegetables they can grow, most aquaponics gardeners cultivate edible fish as well. In this video, Rob shows us the aquaponics greenhouse in his Connecticut backyard, that he built mostly from scavenged parts, as well as his DIY indoor system where he's growing lettuce under a grow light. See What Happens When You Add Epsom Salt to Your Plants

03:51
Epsom-salt is a natural mineral that was first discovered in Epsom, England. People typically use Epsom-salt in the bathroom to relieve aches and pains or internally as a laxative, but it is also a garden additive that expert gardeners swear by. It can help you produce lush, healthy plants, flowers and trees.  Here Are 7-Amazing Reasons to use Epsom-salt in your garden. 1.Make fruit Sweeter. Epsom-salt, when added to trees, bushes and vines that produce fruit, boosts the chlorophyll inside the plant. When plants have more chlorophyll, they have more energy, when they have more energy, they produce more sugar. More-sugar means sweeter fruit for you to enjoy.  2.Tree stump remover. Tree stump removal can be costly, but if you don't have the money to get a stump removed, let Epsom-salt come to your rescue. Simply drill few holes into the stump and fill in the holes with Epsom-salt. In weeks, the stump will begin rotting. 3.Epsom-salt increases Nutrient Absorption. Many commercial fertilizers add magnesium to help plant roots take up vital nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur.) For those using all organic materials to feed their gardens, adding Epsom-salt to soil will improve absorption naturally, eliminating the need for processed chemical-fertilizers. 4.Lush lawn fertilizer. If your lawn isn't lush and beautiful, it probably needs a little magnesium in its life. To perk-up grass, add 3-pounds of Epsom-salt to every 1,250 square feet of grass and then water your-lawn. 5.Beautiful blooming roses  Ever wonder why your neighbor’s rose bushes are fuller than yours and sport so many more blossoms? It is highly likely that the answer is Epsom-salt. Epsom-salt to rose bushes encourages them to produce larger flowers with darker, deeper colors. To incorporate Epsom-salt to your rose bush's diet, add it at the time of planting and when flowers are in bloom.  6.Keep leaves green Plants that aren’t getting enough magnesium can be identified by their yellowing leaves. This is because magnesium is an essential component in the production of chlorophyll. Try sprinkling Epsom-salt around your plants to achieve healthier foliage. About 1-tablespoon per 12-inches of height once a month will benefit the plants in your vegetable-garden, as well as any trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses you want to green-up. And 7. Produce abundant nightshades. Many people enjoy growing plants from the nightshade family such as peppers, tomatoes, eggplants and potatoes. All nightshades need a lot of magnesium, so that they produce greater yields. Epsom-salt also helps improve the flavor of nightshades. To ensure the nightshades you grow in your home garden are abundant and tasty. add 1-tablespoon of Epsom-salt to your peppers and tomatoes by sprinkling it around the base of the plant. If you want the salt to dissolve more-quickly, add it to a gallon of water and water the plants with the mixture. You should continue to add the Epsom-salt to your plants every 2-weeks.  Now if you have any better ideas and suggestion of using Epsom-salt in your garden, please share them in the comments below. 23 CUTE GARDEN DIYs

15:21
COOL GARDEN IDEAS FOR KIDS AND ADULTS This video is a treasure trove for those who love gardening! Do you have a green thumb? In this video for kids, you can find a lot of amazing and brand new crafting ideas that will blow you away. You won't need any special materials for these crafts – only some ordinary stuff that you most likely have at home – old pots, old clothes for upcycling, posicle sticks. Check them out and don't forget to tell us in the comments, which craft you loved most of all. First comes amazing and insanely cute toy miniature. In case you don't have a big garden, you can easily decorate a small one (or have a cute little garden right in a pot). You can make tiny compositions to play with or you can just decorate your apartment with them. The first craft is a tiny bench made of pop sticks and glue. Next comes a cute composition in a basket – it will always remind you of summer days. Another cute craft for kids is a toy dor (may be, it's a door to a fairytale? Remember Alice in Wonderland?). All of these crafts are perfect for your home garden. If you have some sea shells left from your vacation, it's their time – you can make a cute waterfall using them. All you need is your imagination and a bit of hot glue. An empty washing liquid bottle and a handful of pebbles can become an elf's house. This cute sculpture can decorate any garden. As well, you can make an awesome lighthouse using clay pots. Watch this video up to the end and see how to make amazing DIY flower pots. Bound and damned, I loved you then You broke my spark, you're tearing me apart Backed into the poorest view A pseudo life, another mess to hide I've seen this all before, like verses from my dreams The coldest place I've never been Incomplete when I met you Your shreds and scars make up for what you are Deny what doesn't click, ignore what makes you think And plunge into, a world of nothing new Dying, eternally, falling internally for you Wasted all my feelings hating you! Eternally, falling internally for you, Wasted all my feelings hating you! All rise up from the sea, and wrap your arms around me Rain your drugs down on this place and drown us all in our disgrace It's all because of you that I've done this All because of you that I want this Maybe I never bled for you Deep beside the truth as I saw it Deep beside the noose now I've got it Maybe I never bled for you Never fucking bled for you! Sloan - Green Gardens, Cold Montreal

02:02
Track 6 from Sloan's 2011 album, The Double Cross. Lyrics: Green gardens, cold Montreal Crooked pictures that hang in the hall It's the golden day, golden day, gold, you recall on cue Oooh, it's old news. When the world revolved around you, yeah Faculty members agreed to a certain degree And the girl that followed the rules, yeah Looked good on paper, but lacked a central theme The coffee could use more cream Friends blow away, blow away, blow like a cloud Kids go away, go away, go, it's allowed And all of the days spent close to your crowd were few To the girl that followed the rules, yeah It looked good on paper, and gave it a college try Now the ink and her humour is dry Friends blow away, blow away, blow like a cloud Kids go away, go away, go, it's allowed And all of the days spent close to her crowd are through Oooh, it's the truth Green gardens, cold Montreal

ROCK CITY GARDENS LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN GEORGIA

15:38
Kindle book Amazon, The History of Rock City Gardens (Landmarks) :https://amzn.to/2BnSAiL Rock City Gardens in Georgia will amaze you. Located atop Lookout Mountain just 6 miles from downtown Chattanooga, Rock City is a true marvel of nature featuring massive ancient rock formations, gardens with over 400 native plant species, and breathtaking See 7 States panoramic views. Take an unforgettable journey along the Enchanted Trail where each step reveals natural beauty and wonders along the woodland path. Experience the magic of Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village, visit one of our regional gift shops and dine at the Big Rock Grill. Rock City is splendid year-round - Each season there's a new reason to visit! Because of Rock City's closeness to Chattanooga and ONLY A FEW MILES UP the road FROM RUBY FALLS which is in Tennessee, it is frequently believed to be in Tennessee. The tour of Rock City begins in the aptly named Garden's Gateway on the far side of the Rock City gift shop. An ADA-accessible entrance is down the hall to the right of the Gateway. The Grand Corridor is an excellent way to acclimatized your group to the rigors of walking in Rock City. The pathway occasionally narrows and there are some steps, but face it, if you have a problem here, bail out and take the ADA accessible (green) trail. At the Needle's Eye the trail narrows significantly, and walking sideways may be required, before it opens into Deer Park. Goblins' Underpass is a reference to Fairyland, later on trail. On the left after Goblins Underpass a set of rock steps takes visitors up to Legacy Lane. This is a section of the ADA accessible trail that leads to the 1932 Rock City entrance. It can also be used to get to the Birds of Prey show. A choice presents itself before you enter Rock City's most scenic area. For those free-spirits willing to throw caution to the wind, take the Swingalong Bridge, a solidly built swinging bridge with an excellent view of the Tennessee River valley on clear days. For those who want to keep a little earth under their feet choose the Stone Bridge, crafted from solid rock with an excellent view of the swinging bridge. Across the bridge lies was is collectively known as Seven States Plaza, featuring what is one of the best-known scenic views in the world. Peering into Georgia's Ridge and Valley section featuring long mountains (like Taylor's Ridge) separated by well-defined valleys. Within the plaza is the See Seven States marker showing the approximate directions of the states. On a clear day (only about 10% are clear enough in the summer), a knowing eye can spot the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Cohutta Mountains and Rich Mountain in the southern Appalachian province. Added to the plaza in 1991, the Seven States Flag Court has additional scenic views backed by the flags of each of the seven states. The following year the Cliff Terrace was added with food, a movie on Rock City, and amenities. In 2005 a pavilion was added to the plaza so Rock City could host larger events. Leaving the plaza the trail makes a dramatic drop into Fat Man's Squeeze before returning to the area near Seven States Plaza. Here is a dramatic view of some man-made falls and additional scenic views into Georgia's Valley and Ridge area. Continuing on, the 1000-ton Balanced Rock is the final natural attraction in Rock City. Watch for a shortcut shortly after Balanced Rock if you do not wish to see Fairyland Cavern. Frieda Carter loved the children's stories from her native Germany and created Fairyland Cavern as an homage to these tales in 1947. Garnet hired Atlanta sculptor Jesse Sanders to replicate the images of Frieda's childhood. Sanders first had to learn how to work with the relatively new concept of black light, which would allow the cavern to remain dark but light up the statues. In 1964 Sanders completed Mother Goose Village, based on the characters in various nursery rhymes. #seerockcity, #rockcity MUSIC Savfk - The Cave of Poetry - Original music by Savfk (www.youtube.com/savfkmusic www.facebook.com/savfkmusic) Savfk – Deep - Original music by Savfk (www.youtube.com/savfkmusic www.facebook.com/savfkmusic) Savfk feat. How To Make A Miniature Island In Ocean Zen Garden – DIY Stress-Relieving Desk Decoration

10:50
Super beautiful stress-relief toy for your desk which you can make by your own - mini Zen Garden made as Miniature Island in the Ocean with beautiful coral reef at the bottom and sunny beach with palm trees above water. Calm your nerves by drawing in the sand with mini rake and enjoy the view of blue water. Imagine you were there – lying near the miniature campfire, beneath miniature palm trees, under mini beach umbrella on the mini beach towel. This relaxing desk decoration and stress toy is a great way to forget about your problems. Drawing in the sand and watching on how it is raked (which represents ripples in water) is very relaxing, stress-relieving and helps to reduce anxiety and stress level. Simply focus on the movements you make with mini rake and imagine yourself there – on the island. To make this beautiful miniature stylized landscape you will need: a glass bowl and glass food container, sand and decorative stones (I bought both items in the pet shop), plastic plants for aquarium and colored paper clips to make miniature starfishes. Next – let's place two mini palm trees with coconuts. To make them you will need: jute twine, drinking straw, green yarn (better thin and acrylic), mini pompoms and some glue to secure all parts together. Now time for miniature campfire. You will need a hot glue gun, small stones, acrylic paint (black, white, orange and red), sponges (to draw) and dry branches. Surround these “glowing” coals and dry logs with stones around. And now this magical place is ready for rest – making a miniature beach umbrella and mini beach towel. You will need a toothpick, paint, paper (to cut a circle for umbrella (diameter 7 cm)) and a tiny piece of fleece fabric (or any other fabric). Fold the circle as I show in the video, insert the toothpick and you're done! And what Zen Garden could be without rake?! So the final DIY is a mini rake for drawing in the sand. You will need a wooden stir stick, toothpick, super glue and paint. Enjoy and relax! Nice Colorful Plants for Shade Gardens (details in descriptions)

03:13
Hanging types bloom more profusely, but upright strains have larger flowers—you choose. 4.Coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides) This perennial's brilliantly colored leaves range from ruby red and yellow to pink, orange, and blends. 8.Flowering maple (Abutilon hybrids) Bell-shaped blooms of yellow, white, pink, orange, or red dangle in clusters among maple-like green leaves that are sometimes variegated with white. 12.Heucherella Heart-shaped leaves on clumping plants 5 inches tall and 1 foot wide come in many beautiful colors. We especially love ‘Stoplight’ for its lime green leaves splashed with red 13.Hosta hybrids Hostas come in a virtual wardrobe of shapes, textures, and colors. 16.Meadow rue (Thalictrum rochebrunianum ‘Lavender Mist’)  Puffs of small lavender-blue flowers and lacy green leaves that resemble those of columbine make this perennial superb as an airy counterpoint among bolder plants; we love it beside ‘Star Gazer’ hydrangea. 17.Mirror plant (Coprosma ‘Tequila Sunrise’) Glossy, jewel-like foliage blends lots of yummy colors on this amazing tender evergreen shrub. Blossoms turn from purple (“yesterday”) to lavender (“today”) to white (“tomorrow”). visit SUNSET.com : http://www.sunset.com/garden/flowers-plants/color-plants-for-shade#yesterday-today-tomorrow music Song: Ikson - Alive (Vlog No Copyright Music) Music promoted by Vlog No Copyright Music. Green Turtle Encounter in Hikkaduwa Reef Gardens (Sri Lanka)

01:23
When I was in Hikkaduwa Beach I went to the place where it's located the marine Hikkaduwa National Park, a conservation area that since 2011 is protecting the coral reefs quite devastated due to both natural disasters and human activities. As the tide was strong and the visibility low, I couldn't swim to the quite far coral sanctuary, best reached by boat. So I did some snorkeling only in the shallowest part, seeing some corals and fishes, when suddenly two adult green turtles (Chelonia mydas) approached me, one at a time, searching for food among the algae. While I watched them making an effort to overcome the tide and feed themselves, I noticed the big turtles were using markers on their arms and their nests on the ground were fenced, which means that there's a conservation program in place similar to the Brazilian Tamar Project. Brunnera 'Sea Heart'

00:35
For more about 'Sea Heart' visit this link, http://www.waysidegardens.com/Sea-Heart-Brunnera/p/31164/cmp=cel&trigger=ac/ This Heartleaf begins spring with fresh leaves of olive green overlaid with a bright silvery tracery, intricate and very beautiful. Many-layered and dense, this little perennial has a much larger impact than you would expect from its size, thanks to the detailing on every leaf. By mid-spring, the flowers are opening all over 'Sea Heart,' facing straight up on slender stems carried above the foliage. They complement the silvery-green leaves perfectly, and keep arising through late spring. Expect them to begin earlier than other Brunnera varieties, and to last just as long -- giving you another week or two of beauty in the shade!

David Yount, Green Sanctuary Committee Member at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth, comments on the installation and use of a green roof. Minnesota Sea Grant spoke to homeowners and business professionals in the greater Duluth area who use environmentally friendly stormwater tactics to cut down on pollutants entering lakes and streams. These pollutants running from roofs, pavement, and other surfaces account for 70% of all runoff pollutants and can be reduced through rain gardens, pervious pavers, rain barrels, and the like. For more information on the stormwater practices in these videos, visit the Site Design Toolkit at http://www.lakesuperiorstreams.org/stormwater/toolkit/index.html.

Though we couldn't get too close to the plants, we still managed to point out some of the larger varieties taking up residence on the indoor green wall. This is the penultimate episode in this series, so be sure to check out the first three below if you happened to miss them! Ep 100. Gardens by the Bay Cloud Forest Dome Tour — 3 of 5

07:41
If you only have a day to spend at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, then I would highly recommend spending time in the Cloud Forest Dome. As you'll see in this 5-part series, there was just so much to see, including vegetation that typically grows 2,000 meters above sea level, like some Nepenthes and Hoya. But this is only the third stop on a 5-part tour, so be sure to watch all! Gardens by the Bay is an integral part of a strategy by the Singapore government to transform Singapore from a "Garden City" to a "City in a Garden". The stated aim is to raise the quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora in the city.
