Have you ever wanted to create a custom template for an individual category? Ever wondered how you can change what gets displayed on your homepage? If you've wanted to customize your blog by category, author, or other meta data, this video shows you how to edit the loop, with WordPress's very powerful WP_Query. You can get just about any kind of posts you want or exclude certain kinds of posts as well. As mentioned in the video, here is the code you need to manually create new pages in your WordPress theme WITHOUT the need for FTP at all. This is a great little trick I learned. Here's the code you'll need to put in the header.php file: in php code: touch('wp-content/themes/YOURTHEMENAME/category-SLUG.php'); Don't forget to replace YOURTHEMENAME and SLUG with the values you have, as explained in the video. NOTE: If it doesn’t work, you may need to turn on WordPress debug in your wp-config.php file. To do this, you will need access to that file, through FTP or through the cPanel of your hosting account. You need to add this line to the wp-config.php file: define('WP_DEBUG',true); You can change this value to true later to turn the debug messages off. If you reload the homepage, you should see a message saying “cannot create file” and a brief description why. Usually “file or folder does not exist”. You may need to use the full absolute path to the file you want to create. This is usually like: touch('/home/USERNAME/public_html/YOURSITE.COM/wp-content/themes/YOURTHEME/pagename.php'); Replacing the capitalized variables with your specifics. Here is the WordPress Codex page that talks about ways to customize the loop with WP_Query. All the useful variable names are here so you can quickly find the type of posts you want in about 5 minutes. It is very straightforward and simple to do. Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL Download our exclusive 10-Point WP Hardening Checklist: http://bit.ly/10point-wordpress-hardening-checklist How To Get WordPress Posts To Page - Displaying Posts On A Page | WP Learning Lab This is one of those things that all beginners want to be able to do and it seems like it should be easy. Luckily, it actually is easy to do if you know how to do it :) There are two ways to make this happen. One is to set the blog page and the other is to add categories to the navigation menus which displays all the posts in the category. Let's do the first one first, setting the blog page to display posts on a specific page. First, you have to make sure that you create a page called Blog by going to Page then Add New. Type Blog into the title field and click on Publish. Now go to Settings then Reading Settings in the WordPress Admin area. At the top you will see a "Front page displays" section where you choose the "static page" option. Then for the Post Page drop down choose the Blog page you just created. You will also have to choose a Front Page to make this work. Then click Save Changes at the bottom of the page. Now your posts will appear on the "Blog" page you created a few earlier. Another easy option is to display posts on a category page. On all of the posts you create you have the option of setting a Category for the post. You can then go to Appearance, then Menus and add that specific category to any navigation menu you have on your site. When someone clicks on the category link in the nav they will be taken to that category page where it displays all the posts in that category. I hope this information helps you! Posts vs. Page | Difference & When to Use Each: WordPress for Beginners Tutorial ★ SUMMARY ★ Today I want to share with you the difference between posts vs. pages when it comes to your WordPress website. Often one of the most common questions, especially as you’re getting started in building a website with WordPress is, should you use posts or should you use pages? And when do you use one vs. the other? Basically, If you have content that’s static or content that doesn’t change as frequently, it’s better to use pages. When it comes to pages, they don’t have any authors, they’re not in any specific categories, you cannot tag them and they’re not date based. That’s why pages are usually used for static based content. One cool thing about pages in WordPress, is that you can create custom templates or structures for them. So pages can be completely different from one another. However, when it comes to posts, they work in a very different way. Posts are usually date based, they can be scheduled, you can tag them and also organize them by category. And the structure of posts is always the same, meaning, they all have the same template, which makes them look very similar. If you have content that’s constantly being updated, such as a blog, where you create articles every week for different topics, then, in this case, it’s good to use posts and organize them by category. And if you’re setting up static content that doesn’t change too frequently, then it’s better to use pages. http://GeckoGullyWebSites.com Update February 2016: I have found a better way to do the drop-down menu for WooCommerce product categories. This plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/widget-menuizer will put any widget in as a menu item. You can create a top-level menu item called, say "Product Finder" that is actually the standard WooCommerce categories widget. And it will drop-down and fly out beautifully. (In case that link breaks again, it is called Widget Menuizer, and is in the Wordpress.org plugin repository.) You might need to reformat it a bit with css to make it look how you want it. You might also need to add a custom sidebar - I like this plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/custom-sidebars/ for that. As of now I am building a client site that is using this. I will add a link here when it is ready to go public. Want to know how to download this video from YouTube? http://HowToDownloadFromYoutube.com/

WordPress displays your content in a blog format on the homepage normally but not all sites should be displayed that way. Some sites you want to display a welcome page or other custom content but can still find use for your posts. In this video we will show you how to create a separate page for blog posts in WordPress. You would want to start by creating two new pages on your site one to be the new home page and another to be the page where you list your blog posts. For the home page you will want to add whatever content to it that you want someone visiting your site to see first. For the posts page you will want to leave that blank for your posts to be added to the page. With the pages set up you will now go back to your admin area under Settings, Reading. From this page you can set your separate blog page by changing how your home page is displayed to a static page where you can set your home and posts page to the pages you want. Now that you have set your page for blog posts you will need to ensure there is a method to find your posts. Under Appearance, Menus you can add the pages to your menu and ensure to include them in your menu and the menu display checkbox is checked. With that you now have a separate page for your blog posts in WordPress. Make Your WordPress Website in 10 Mins ➜ https://youtu.be/YWA-xbsJrVg Watch How you can Add a Menu in WordPress, (including creating a Drop-Down Menu) Menus in WordPress are a great navigation tool which allows users to freely browse through the content of your website without any confusion. WordPress menus are essential in development of a website which provides structure to your website by arranging the content in an organized manner. Now, in our previous video, you learned - How to Make a Website in 10 minutes. Now, let’s see, How you can change the Menu of that WordPress Website. To do this, you can follow these 3 steps (with timestamps) 1. Delete Existing Menu ( 00:40 ) 2. Adding a New Menu ( 01:05) 3. Creating A Drop-Down Menu ( 03: 49) Let’s get started. Step 1: Delete Existing Menu To delete the existing Menu, First go to your WordPress Dashboard and then click the ‘Customize’ option. Under Customize, Select ‘Menus’ Here, you’ll find that there is already a Menu called “Top Navigation”. So, when you click this Menu, you’ll see the items that is there in it. Now, this menu can be deleted by clicking the ‘Delete Menu’ button at the bottom part of the screen. Once done, the Menu will be removed. Step 2: Add a New Menu Now to Create a New Menu, First Click ‘Create New Menu’ button. Next, you need to give a name of your choice for the new menu. For example, you can enter the name as ‘Top Menu’ and once done, you need to choose where the Menu should appear on your website. Based on the WordPress theme you’re using, you can place the Menu on different areas of your website. Each theme will provide different options on where the Menu can be placed. Example: With the Astra theme, we’re using, it shows primary and secondary menu. So, if you select the Primary Menu then it will place the menu on the top right corner of your website. After choosing, you can click ‘Next’. Then, you can start adding items to the Menu. Here, you’ll find the pages section where all the pages that you’ve in your website will be shown. Now, If you want to see the pages and its content, you can go to your WordPress Dashboard and Click ‘Pages’. So, the pages which you see here will be shown in your menu items. So, To add the pages to the Menu, Press the ‘Add Symbol’ and the page will be added to the Menu. Similarly, you can add the other pages also. After you’ve added the items, you’ll be able to see your menu. Now, you can change the order of the menu items by dragging an item and placing it where you want. Doing this will change the order of the menu items. So Next, let’s see how you can add a brand new page to the menu which is not on your site yet. So, to add a brand new page to the menu, all you need to do is, enter the name of the page you want to create and then click ‘add’ to get it into the menu. After adding, You can now click ‘publish’ to see your NEW MENU. However, since you’ve created a new page, it will be blank by default. So, You can later add the content to this new page by clicking ‘Edit’ option in Pages. Step 3: Create Drop down Menu Here, let’s see how you can create a drop down Menu. Drop Menu is a very effective way to categorize the content and showcase them independently. A drop down menu can be easily created by just dragging an item in the Menu and putting it below another item. After doing this, you can see that you have a drop down menu created. Repeat the same process whenever you want to create various drop down menu. So now you know how you can add the pages you’ve created to your drop down menu. That’s it! This is how easily you can Create A New Menu or Create Drop down Menu in WordPress.
