Linguistics, Style and Writing in the 21st Century - with Steven Pinker
Does writing well matter in an age of instant communication? Drawing on the latest research in linguistics and cognitive science, Steven Pinker replaces the recycled dogma of style guides with reason and evidence. Subscribe for regular science videos: http://bit.ly/RiSubscRibe Watch the Q&A here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rYAnYXIhL0 In this brand-new talk, introduced by Lord Melvyn Bragg, Steven argues that style still matters: in communicating effectively, in enhancing the spread of ideas, in earning a reader’s trust and, not least, in adding beauty to the world. Steven Pinker is an experimental psychologist and one of the world’s foremost writers on language, mind, and human nature. He is Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University and conducts research on language and cognition but also writes for publications such as the New York Times, Time, and is the author of many books, including The Language Instinct and How the Mind Works. Words for IELTS Writing 1/10
We will look at 3 specific words for the IELTS writing test you can use today, then look at the foundations / the FORMULA, (a more longer term strategy). A formula is better because you won’t feel the need to FORCE some terms into your writing. First and foremost - why did I choose these words? Because they are not in your everyday speech or writing. Also it takes a higher level of English to use them, they might have special instances, uses, or grammar rules. Ascertain - to determine It is increasingly difficult to ascertain the reasons for more regulations in the workplace, more often than not more red tape makes it increasingly difficult for employers to employ. Beget Cause; bring about. Government regulations often beget more bureaucracy, red tape and inefficiencies. Tantamount to Equivalent in seriousness to; virtually the same as. ‘the resignations were tantamount to an admission of guilt’ To place a modern MacDonald’s style restaurant in one of these areas would be tantamount to architectural vandalism. Topic Specific Vocab - Some people spend a lot of money attending cultural or sports events. Is it a good or a bad thing? Give your opinion and examples from your own experience. INTRO BODY PARAGRAPH 1 Entertainment spending is definitely a good development, it gives something for people to aspire to. It also most likely begets higher revenues for the performers and promoters, which should ultimately lead to a even more events. This undoubtedly leads to greater monetary and cultural wealth for a society. Take for example the English Premier League (EPL), this entertainment spectacle has brought considerable wealth into cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and London. Higher ticket prices lead to better wages for football stars, which lead to more quality players wanting to play in the EPL, leading to a considerable increase in high net-worth individuals residing in these cities. There has undoubtedly been a positive self fulfilling cycle of improvement and quality, fuelled by increasing prices. Furthermore high prices will most likely mean higher tax revenues for the government, this is definitely beneficial for society. More advanced - avoid: GOOD / BAD/ NICE / TO BE / TO HAVE / GET - upgrade your language - go through with a Thesaurus, improve, and experiment. For example: Entertainment spending is definitely a good development, it gives something for people to aspire to. When they have access to these events, they have the opportunity to spend some nice time with their family and friends. Entertainment spending is a POSITIVE development, it gives something for people to aspire to. Upon purchasing access for such events, they gain the opportunity to spend quality time and make memorable experiences with their friends and family. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Click below to subscribe for more videos: www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_-user=IELTSPodcastBW Ben Worthington IELTS Podcast, IELTS Success tutor http://www.ieltspodcast.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/IELTSP... an on the Street(500 words paper)
Required AP style writing in this p
an on the Street(500 words paper) Required AP style writing in this paper. Preferred News writing background writer. As mentioned in the introduction, the Man on the Street assignment is a fairly structured news story that requires the reporter to go out into the community and, using conventional face-to-face reporting techniques, interview a number of people to get their take on an issue that has been in the news. As such, the MOTS allows students to build on the reporting skills they developed by interviewing their partners in the lab to write their obits. (This time, however, youll be interviewing a bunch of people to create a multiple-source story.) The MOTS also forces the writer to become more selective about the information they chose to quote vs. what will appear as a paraphrase. Realize your MOTS story needs to be more than just a string of quotes in response to a single question. Youll need to draw out peoples beliefs about an issue by asking them a series of questions that moves beyond a one-dimensional yes/no or agree/disagree format. Youll also need to weave in some background information about the issue itself to provide context for the comments. (Be careful, though, that the background doesnt overwhelm the live responses.) Youll have to provide adequate biographical information about the people in your story, particularly their connection to the issue youre exploring. Youll work with your lab instructor to develop the topics you will report for the MOTS assignment. Realize this story will serve the public interest through your reporting; by summarizing an issue and providing the publics reaction to it, your readers will be able to form their own opinion about the topic. So, yes, your story will report the opinion of others -- but it should not contain your opinion. (We are using the term man in the generic sense in naming this assignment, in accordance with AP style. Seemingly more inclusive terms such as humans or humankind on the street would lead

How to write a good essay: Paraphrasing the question
Do you sometimes struggle to begin writing an essay when taking an exam? Good news! There is an important writing skill that will help you improve your essay introductions. This technique is called "paraphrasing", and it means rewriting something using different words. In this lesson, I will teach you how to paraphrase successfully and how to change essay questions into your own words. These skills are very useful for university and high school students, as well as any students writing English proficiency exams like the TOEFL or IELTS. TAKE THE QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/how-to-write-a-good-essay-paraphrasing-the-question/ WATCH NEXT: Essay Writing – 6 ways to compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8WSzwBD7GQ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video I'm going to teach you something very important for if you're taking any type of test that has a writing component. So, if you are taking the IELTS, the TOEFL, the CELPIP, even just a university test, it can be any type of test, but if you're asked to write something like an essay or a paragraph, this video is for you. Okay? So I'm going to teach you a very important skill that will help improve your marks when it comes to writing on tests. So, let's get started. So, I have here an essay question. This question is actually... I've seen it on the IELTS. You know, you have similar types of questions on the TOEFL, sometimes in university. The question is this: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country. Do you agree or disagree?" Or maybe: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" So, this is an example of a question you might be asked. Now, a problem a lot of students have is in their answer to this question. They see this, and they think: "Okay, education is the most important factor in the development of a country, yes, I agree." So then they... Or: "I disagree", and they start writing. And what do they write? Usually the very first thing students will write is this: "I agree that education is the single most important factor in the development of a country because..." So, what is the problem with this? Is there any problem to start off your essay with something like this, or to start off your answer? There's a big problem. So I want you to take a moment and think: "What could be the problem with starting your essay off with this sentence?" Okay, well, if you noticed, you have here the word: "education, education, is, is, the single most important, most important factor". If you notice, these are the same. They're the exact same, except for: "I agree that" and "because". The student, here, has used the exact same wording that is in the question. So, if you do this on the IELTS-and many students do this, same with on the TOEFL-you actually will lose marks, and same with in university, because you're not showing your abilities; you're just copying what somebody else has said or what the essay question is. So, in this video, I'm going to show you first off... First off, I'm going to tell you: Don't do this, don't copy. And I'm going to teach you ways in order to improve yourself and your answer by changing this wording. How can you change your introduction so it's different than what the question is? Okay? So, let's look at how to make these changes. Okay, so what we are going to do in order to change the question into a proper answer that doesn't just copy the question, is we are going to paraphrase. So, the word here is: "paraphrase". This might be a new word for you. What does it mean to paraphrase something? Well, when we paraphrase, it means we take a sentence that, you know... We take somebody else's sentence and we change it into our own words. Okay? So, we change the words of a sentence, we also change maybe the sentence structure, but we keep all the same meaning. Okay? So, the meaning from the sentence you copy, it stays the same, same meaning, but different words and different sentence structure. Okay? So it's in your words, but this other person's meaning. So, we are going to paraphrase this example of a question into our own words. So, first we're going to look at how to do that using vocabulary and synonyms. So, we have here the same question: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country." How can we put this into new words or our own words that keep the same meaning? Well, we can use synonyms. So, this might be a new word for you, too. A "synonym". "Synonyms" are words that have the same meaning, but are different words.

Anna's having trouble with her emails. She's been trying to sort out the order of Imperial Lemons for Mr Lime. Her email is rewritten and sent off, but will that be the end of the matter? For more English at Work and other great content:: http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/english-at-work TRANSCRIPT Narrator: Hello, Anna's just arrived at her desk to start the day at Tip Top Trading. Paul is walking towards her, eating a biscuit, he looks a bit bothered. Paul: Anna? Anna: Yes, Paul. Paul: Come and have a biscuit in my office. Now Anna, about Mr Lime. Anna: I didn't say yes! Paul: Pardon? Yes to what? Anna: Oh, nothing. Paul: You sent him an email yesterday and copied me in. Anna: Yes. Paul: Your email reads: boxes ok. pls c-d-u cfirm wnt 300 ta. Anna: Yes: please could you confirm you want 300. Paul: Right. Now that's not really the best way of writing an email to a client, is it? Anna: Oh. Paul: Please could you re-send your message to Mr Lime, using actual words that make sense. Anna: Okay. Paul: Thank you. Have a chocolate crunchy! Anna: Thanks. Tom: Morning Anna. Anna: Hello. Tom: Let me guess, Paul just spoke to you about your email? Anna: How do you know? Tom: You copied me in remember, I just read it – or tried to. Anna: But what's the problem? Other people write like that! Tom: No, maybe some people write text messages like that in an SMS message on their phones, but that is completely the wrong style for an email to a client. Narrator: Okay Anna, let's stop listening to Tom, he's a waste of space. These are the kinds of phrases you need in a business-related email: Dear Mr Lime... I hope you are well. I am writing regarding... Please could you confirm... Yours sincerely, or Best wishes. Anna: Thank you! I'll rewrite my message. There! I'd better get it checked before I send. Denise? Denise: (On the phone) yes... the other problem with Stephanie is that her legs are just too long... Anna: Oh, she's on the phone. Denise: ... yes, like trees... Anna: I'll have to ask Tom. Tom? Tom: Mm? Anna: Could you read this through before I send it? Tom: Hang on, Anna, let me just finish this sentence. It’s really important. I’m ready, let’s have a look. Okay. (reading) Dear Mr Lime, I hope you are well. I am writing regarding your request for luxury boxes for the Imperial Lemon Delivery. We will indeed be able to supply them. Please could you confirm that you want 300. Best wishes, Anna. Anna: Well? Tom: It’s good, it's much better. Send it. Hopefully Mr Lime will think your last message was just someone sitting on your keyboard by mistake. Anna: Thanks. Tom: You're not... Anna: What? Tom: Nothing. It's none of my business. Anna: What? Tom: You're not ever going to go to lunch with Mr Lime are you? I mean, in a non-business way... Anna: No of course not! Tom: I mean I don’t care… it's just... important to... stay professional. Anna: Yes. Narrator: Hmmm.... well, I had a feeling Anna's email was going to cause problems. But at least she won't make a mistake like that again. Here’s a reminder of the phrases she used in her new, improved email. Dear Mr Lime... I hope you are well. I am writing regarding... Please could you confirm... Best wishes. Until next time, bye!

ENGLISH SLANG – 15 trendy fashion words
Learn new vocabulary about beauty and fashion. Just like fashion trends, the words we use in English to talk about makeup, clothing, hair, and style, change quickly. The words that are used today are not the same as five years ago. There is a whole world of beauty vloggers and fashion hauls on YouTube. If you’re into fashion, you’ll want to look en point when wearing items from your most recent haul. If makeup is your thing, you’ll be wearing a red lip or using a palette to get a smoky eye. You’ll be sporting balayage or ombre hair (don’t worry -- I’ll teach you how to pronounce those new French-origin words too!). Watch and never forget the boyfriends of Instagram. Then take the quiz at https://www.engvid.com/english-slang-15-trendy-fashion-words/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. In this lesson we're going to look at trendy fashion words. These are words that I'm hearing used a lot now around our times, so let's have a look through the words and learn them one-by-one so we can sound really cool and fashionable. Let's start with: "en pointe". If something is en pointe, it means perfect, it looks so good. What you're wearing today, that dress, your dress is en pointe. It's so fashionable, it's so, so hot right now. Very similar meaning to something being "on-trend". If we think about the word "trendy", it means fashionable. But to say something is trendy isn't fashionable enough anymore, we have to change it and say: "on-trend". We could also change it and say: "bang-on-trend". If it's bang-on-trend, it's even more now, happening right this minute. Next, if we're talking about makeup... When I was younger we used to talk about wearing lipstick or wearing red lipstick, or a pink lipstick, but now instead of saying the word "lipstick", it's described as: "I'm wearing a red lip today." And the same thing, instead of saying: "eye shadow", "Oh, I bought this eye shadow. It's blue. Look at it on my eyes", you don't say that because it doesn't... Doesn't sound... Doesn't sound fashionable enough, it doesn't sound like you know about makeup. So, what people who know about makeup say is they say: "Oh, today I'm wearing a smokey eye." I'm not wearing a smokey eye, I haven't got anything on, but a smokey eye is when the eye shadow looks grey or dark, and it's most often worn at night when you're going out. You get your eye shadow these days in "palettes". And instead of wearing just one eye shadow, like, wearing a pink eye shadow, the eye shadow palette comes with about... Well, as many as you want I suppose, but from 4 to 12 eye shadows, and what they do is they put on the different eye shadows from the palette. So, they will talk about creating the smokey eye from palette number three, or whatever. Next is a makeup term that's been around for a few years. This makeup term came from when the Kardashians got famous because the kind of makeup Kim Kardashian would use was a kind of makeup that shades her face to give it a certain... To make it look like there's more shadow on the face and a more dramatic kind of foundation, which is done with different brushes. It's a kind of makeup technique called "contouring". Apparently it comes... Apparently it's a makeup technique that's been around for ages, but before, drag queens used to use it, men who... Men who were still men, but dressed up as women mostly for performance and being in shows and things like that. So it originally comes from there. And I did experiment with contouring. I once watched a few too many YouTube videos, and it all went terribly wrong, so moving on from contouring. Next we have "drugstore makeup". In England we don't have drugstores, we have pharmacies where you go and buy your medicine, and you can buy toiletries, but we don't have drugstores. We have chains of drugstores, for example, Boots or Superdrug, and you can go in there and buy makeup, but we never call those places drugstores. Yet, when people talk about makeup now, the younger generation, they will... They will talk about buying drugstore makeup, which means the kind of makeup that only... Only costs you a few pounds to buy, it's not the really, really expensive makeup, and you can... You can buy it easily, close... Close... Close where you live. So, drugstore makeup is the kind of makeup you can do that doesn't cost you so much money as the really expensive brands. So that's an American term, but it's being used a lot here now in England. The next... The next two terms are about hair. These are newer fashionable techniques for dying your hair, and the two words come from French. In the English pronunciation we'd say: "balayage".

5 Tips on Starting to Write | Get Words on the Page! | How to Write Flash Fiction
5 Tips on Starting to Write | Get Words on the Page! | How to Write Flash Fiction Few things are more intimidating to any writer than a blank page. You’ve decided that you want to be a writer but you’re not sure where to begin. In this video series we’ll talk about all things writing related and in today’s video, I’ll go over how to actually get started in the writing process. Make sure to subscribe and hit that little bell for notifications so you never miss an episode. And of course, if you’d like to become a Patron, you’ll unlock even more rewards like issues of Flash Fiction Online, manuscript critiques, and personal coaching from yours truly. Today I want to get you started writing. Putting words on a page. And for today’s exercise, it doesn’t matter what you’re writing: fiction, nonfiction, short or long, a cook book or a memoir. I just want you to write. Leave me a comment and let me know what your biggest challenge is when it comes to getting words on a page. And if you stick around to the end I’ll even give you a writing prompt. We all have this little internal editor in our head who is looking over our shoulder and judging us while we write. Sometimes, this internal editor can be really intimidating, telling us that we’re too inexperienced or our ideas are too silly or we don’t have an English degree that we never actually start writing. The idea that what we write might be judged and found not good enough is absolutely crippling. Well, here’s a little secret. Every writer faces this problem. We all have that internal editor telling us how terrible we are. The trick is learning how to turn off that internal editor so you can write, freely and openly. That’s where the magic of creativity happens… So how do you make that happen? NOT in drugs. Don’t do that. Free writing. Just start writing. Whatever comes to mind. Just roll with it. This is for you. You’re teaching yourself to put words on a page in any sequence and about any topic. It doesn’t matter if the grammar is imperfect or the structure is flawed. And if your internal editor pipes up that something is wrong, you can tell him to be quiet because free writing is totally stream of consciousness and there’s no wrong way to do it. 2. Write fast. Set a timer for fifteen minutes. In that time, write as furiously as possible. Don’t correct any mistakes. Don’t hit backspace. Just keep writing. Mistakes can be fixed later. The goal is to get words on the page. 3. Learn your process. In the last video about Plotting & Pantsing (https://youtu.be/SBjgwngWVfs) I talked about the two different kinds of writing styles - plotting and pantsing - so if you’re not sure what kind of style best suits you as a writer, head back over to that video and check it out. If you’re a plotter, make an outline. If you’re a pantser, when an idea strikes, sit down and go. And don’t judge yourself for being whatever style of writer you are. 4. Acknowledge that all first drafts are horrible. Tell yourself that you’re committed to as many drafts as it takes to get your story into shape. So if the first draft is terrible, it doesn’t matter. At least it’s done. 5. Don’t go back. This is even more important if you’re writing longer pieces. But when you sit down to write, don’t go back over what you wrote the day before. Just pick up from the last sentence and start writing. FINISH. The. DRAFT. Here’s a writing prompt: I want you to think of your favorite song lyrics. Now, you can’t use those song lyrics in a story for copyright reasons… but I want you to take those song lyrics and embody them in a character. Hopefully those lyrics are going to give you some clue as to this character’s wants, needs, motivations, and struggles. Now take this character and put them in a situation where they can’t have what they want. How do they go about getting it? Let me know how that works out for you. Stay tuned for the next video where I’ll talk about how to find time to write! Make sure to subscribe and hit that bell for notifications so you never miss an episode. And of course, if you’d like to become a Patron, you’ll unlock even more rewards like issues of Flash Fiction Online, manuscript critiques, and personal coaching from yours truly. Please consider checking out my blog: http://lofalexandria.com/ or following me on twitter: https://twitter.com/lofalexandria I tried to find this amazing video breaking down Eminem's rhymes for a discussion on reddit about Eminem and it had been removed from youtube after the creator's youtube channel was closed down. Thought I would re-upload for everyone to enjoy. The channel this video was originally from was closed due to some legal trouble for the creator: http://www.dailydot.com/news/youtube-mike-lombardo-arrested-fbi-child-porn/ I figured there is no harm in uploading it again since it is not likely he is going to be back on the web any time soon to reupload himself.

In this video I used a custom function called Get() to retrieve input from the user and store that input into the buffer[] sting array. You can use scanf(), fgets() in your code or you could write your own version of a Get() function. The only reason I chose to put that in this video was to encourage new programmers to explore writing some of there own custom functions that could be used in there own libraries. The code is from an example in the book C by Discover 4th Edition
