Product Manager - 10 Essential Skills to Master (In 2019)

06:51
Product Management is a fast-growing and niche area to develop a career in. Naturally, there are some essential skills that can get you to be the very best of the lot. While the need for Product Managers is increasing by the day - in startups, tech companies and other large companies alike - the supply in India is currently only limited to a few thousands and compares poorly to countries such as the US. As per the Google and Accel Partners SAAS Report, there are roughly 36,000 Product Managers in India and the number is expected to increase to about 68,000 Product Managers by 2020. So, the need is apparent. But what does one have to do to get there? How to become a Product Manager? A common misconception is that Product Managers need to only master certain hard skills such as business understanding, tech and data. However, this would only mean the job is half done. To be a successful Product Manager you must have some soft skills too. These include communication, negotiation and leading without authority among many others. But don't worry about backgrounds, as Product Managers have been known to have diverse work and educational experience prior to making the transition into Product Management. Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in this 3rd part of the Careers-In-Shorts Series what these key skills are and how one can ace them to get on the road to being a great Product Manager. To learn more about being a successful Product Manager, pick up a copy of Product Management for Dummies. http://280.gr/2iHUkdl 280 Group CEO and Founder, Brian Lawley, is the author of 5 best-selling books including Product Management for Dummies. Now Brian is explaining what he believes are the three secrets to successful Product Management. The first secret is to listen more than you talk. This is difficult to do but if you can learn active listening techniques and really commit to it, you'll be surprised how much you pick up that will help you along the way. The next secret is to be responsible for the whole product. Many Product Managers make the mistake of being too focused on the specific features of the product. They should in stead be concerned with the whole product, the entire experience that a customer has in relation to the product. The third Product Management success secret is life-long learning. Ensure you are always upping your game, continuous learning will reap significant benefits for your product and your career. If you don't continue to grow you won't continue to be successful. Top 3 Challenges for Product Managers | Successful Product Management | Manipal ProLearn

01:03
#TechnologyTuesdays Here are 3 key challenges that every product manager faces. Are you working towards overcoming these? To know more about product management program click here: https://www.manipalprolearn.com/blog/product-management-program As a product manager, you have to care. You have to care about everything, including things that can be rather problematic. That being said, no job comes without its set of challenges. Let’s look at some of the everyday challenges that successful product managers need to overcome. 1.Knowing when to say ‘NO’ – Jack Dorsey, CEO of Square and Twitter, describes product managers as Chief Editors. As per him, the biggest problem a PM faces is probably to have to edit out things that do not go with the vision of the product. Various individuals and teams will ideate to come up with features for the product, but not everything can work for one product. Different stakeholders will constantly badger the PM with ideas and emails to implement their suggestions, but only the PM will be able to visualize the roadmap and goals set out for the product. So keeping ‘the big picture’ in mind, the PM should know when to say ‘no’, how to say ‘no, and not get side-tracked by short-term revenue. 2.Storytelling – A PM should be able to engage his/her target audience through his/her storytelling skills. When a product is in the development stages, the kind of story it carries is significant to realize the full potential of the product, and the storyteller usually is the product manager. A product manager should be able to weave a cohesive story by managing his/her team in a coordinated manner. This can be done by knowing how to spin the story in a way that connects with the various groups/individuals in his/her target audience and inspires them to build the product. 3.Thinking Vs. Doing – Innovation is a crucial component for successful product management. A PM will always be inundated with work, but only through prioritization, innovation and delegation, can he/she stay afloat. Finding a balance between innovation and execution cannot be easy, but has to be done through ideation to be able to fulfill all the responsibilities put on a PM. 4.Pricing & Business Models – Picking the appropriate business model is not a simple decision to make for any new product. There are decisions to be made at every step and multiple analytical approaches can be taken to produce an infinite number of combinations. Choosing the right business model is also difficult. The pricing of the product is a whole other story. Knowing how much a customer will be willing to pay, is a difficult and iterative process. Making wrong decisions could render all the work put into building the product, useless. With experience and sufficient testing, a good PM is able to make the best decisions for the product. A product manager’s job has become exceedingly important and has its challenges. However, it also has a lot of payoffs that make the job interesting, rewarding, and exciting.

The Art of Product Management with Sachin Rekhi (ENG’05 W’05)

01:07:06
Product managers drive the vision, strategy, design, and execution of their product. While one can often quickly comprehend the basic responsibilities of the role, mastering each of these dimensions is truly an art form that one is constantly honing. In this presentation I'll share my lessons learned over the last decade as a product manager in Silicon Valley on the art behind each of these dimensions of product management. Sachin Rekhi is a serial entrepreneur and product leader who has spent the last decade developing innovative products in Silicon Valley. Sachin most recently founded Connected, a professional contact manager that was acquired by LinkedIn in 2011 and re-launched as LinkedIn Contacts. He went on become head of product for LinkedIn Sales Navigator, LinkedIn's flagship offering for sales professionals. Prior to Connected, Sachin founded Anywhere.FM, a web music player that allowed users to upload, play, and discover music online, which was acquired by imeem in 2008. Sachin started his career at Microsoft as a product lead on Visual Studio, Microsoft's developer tools platform. The Skills Of A Successful Product Manager

01:17
Two key skills that every product manager needs to master to be successful are the empathy and communication to negotiate the interests of many stakeholders and the fundamental understanding of her business. If you cannot communicate why you're working on something and understand how it's going to have a positive impact on your business, your ability to manage your product will suffer. Matt Doumar was the VP of Innovation at SinglePlatform. He was one of the first employees and helped the business scale from no software to a successful exit to Constant Contact 18 months after launching the first product. If you want to learn more about the techniques Matt and other product mangers use to build products that their customers love, check out my Udemy Course on Product Management at Startups - http://bit.ly/1OsC2IV

VIEW THE FULL PRESENTATION HERE http://grandview.rymatech.com/2009/164-is-domain-expertise-critical-to-be-a-successful-product-manager.html RYMA's October 14th Webinar was presented by Roger Cauvin and Lisa Crymes. A recent hot topic and debate was sparked on Twitter during the recent PMV webinar "Why are there so few great product managers? A CEO's perspective", by Barbara Tallent. This webinar was a follow-on to that discussion.A product manager's value to a company stems from an understanding of the users, buyers, competition, and problems in the market. But what makes a good product manager? The goal of this presentation is to discuss the issues and differences of opinions around domain expertise and if it's really required to be a successful product manager Key Ideas Explored: • How important is prior knowledge and experience in the domain or industry? • How important is the ability to quickly and thoroughly acquire this knowledge?" • Can you be credible in your company or in front of customers without domain experience? • Can to much domain experience actually dilute an objective opinion?

05:00
VIEW THE FULL PRESENTATION HERE http://grandview.rymatech.com/2006/149-how-to-run-a-successful-beta-program.html Often, customer beta programs are one of the most critical factors in the success or failure of a product. Yet many times they are not well-planned and are executed at the last minute with a lack of resources and focus. An effective beta program can provide you with valuable information, such as whether your product is truly ready to ship, what features should be in the next release and how satisfied customers will or won't be with the product. If done right, it can also set you up for critical launch and marketing deliverables such as success stories, customer quotes and references for the press. As a Product Management professional who is responsible for the overall success of your product, it is important that you ensure that the beta programs you run are comprehensive and effective.
