How to Build a Router Table Part 1 of 2 - The Base
Here is Part 1 of 2 of this Router Table build. In Part 1 we work on building the base which is a solid foundation for the router table. This base is made of 2x4 material and using Bridal and mortise and tenon joints along with some fasteners to pull it all together. Not only will it work for this Build, but the construction and material would make for a goof foundation for a solid work bench ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sources - ShopNotes Setting Up Shop - Article: Rock-Solid Router Table (Base Section Only) Zero Play Guide Bar System - http://microjig.com/products/zeroplay-guide-bar/index.shtml GR-200 GRR-Ripper - http://microjig.com/products/grr-ripper/index.shtml ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Video Sponsors MicroJig - http://wwww.microjig.com Digital Wood Carver - http://www.digitalwoodcarver.com Clear Vue Cyclones - http://www.clearvuecyclones.com/ (use Code LANEY for discount shopping) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music Song - Quick-Moving-Stream-Alt-COC011101 by Edward Grenga (ASCAP), Charles Lawry (ASCAP), Douglas Quick-Moving-Stream-Alt-COC011101 Stevens (ASCAP), Michael McMahon (ASCAP); Purchased from http://www.stockmusic.com on 7-27-14 End User License http://www.stockmusic.com/home/pricing_2/end_user_license ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Website: http://www.asimpledesignofocala.com - Website ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Become a member of the United Federation of Woodworkers http://www.ufoww.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mailing Address 2101 NE 2nd Street Ocala, Florida 34470 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Contact Laney [email protected] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Social Network Pages: http://www.twitter.com/Wood_Jedi - Follow me on Twitter http://www.facebook.com/asimpledesignofocala - Like Me on Facebook http://www.cafepress.com/ASDOO_Gear - A Simple Design of Ocala "Gear" Store Support A Simple Design of Ocala http://www.asimpledesignofocala.com/support/support.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ © A Simple Design of Ocala, Inc.

How to Make a Cross-Cut Sled
Original post on our site with additional comments: http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/the-cross-cut-sled/ Then One of the first fixtures I ever made for my shop was a cross-cut sled. Heavily-influenced by David Marks, I modeled it after his design. The sled opened up a whole world of possibilities for not only cross-cutting, but joinery as well. I didn't have a reliable compound miter saw at the time so this versatile fixture really helped me get the most out of my limited tool set. Here's a pic from the old days! Now Now with a full complement of tools, I am finding myself longing for some of the simple solutions I used in the past. And after spending some time at the William Ng School using his cross-cut sleds for various operations, I knew it was time to get my butt in gear and make myself a new cross-cut sled. You'll notice that my sled doesn't have any bells and whistles like built-in stops or hold downs, but you can certainly add those if you feel they are appropriate. Hip To Be Square! To square the fence, I use the "5-cut squaring method", which you can see demonstrated in the video and also in this little Flash presentation. Its an incredible method for adjusting a fence down to the nearest thousandth. The final adjustments are made using feeler gauges and a method I learned directly from William Ng himself. Important Note -- I messed up! Yeah I suck. During the editing/filming process, I got the adjustment mixed up. In the video, I state that to correct the error measured by the 5-cut method, I would need to push the left side of the fence BACK toward me. That's exactly the opposite of what I needed to do. Instead, the fence needs to go forward on the left side. Because the feeler gauge method of adjustment only works by pulling one side of the fence back toward the user, you can effectively push the left side forward by pulling the right side back. So to sum up, instead of making the adjustment by pulling the fence back on the left side, I should have pulled the fence back on the right side. Dimensions A cross-cut sled can be any size you want. Just keep in mind the bigger it is, the harder it is to handle. So for me, the ideal size was approximately the dimensions of my tablesaw top. Plywood base: 34″ Wide x 30 " Deep (1/2″ Baltic Birch Ply) Fences: 4 1/4″ Wide x 30″ Long Runners: 30″ Long x 3/4″ Wide x 3/8″ Thick Techniques Once the sled is constructed, I cover the following techniques for using the sled: Standard Cross-Cut Wide Cross-Cut Long Cross-Cut Using The Stop Block Repetitive Cuts Small Parts Cut The Wood Whisperer is education and entertainment for the modern woodworker! The Simple, Accurate Way to Cut Crown Molding - WOOD magazine
Installing crown molding in your home or on a project? With this cutting technique, you use a simple jig and the built-in 45-degree miter stops on your miter saw--no bevel-cutting to get super-accurate joints. Simple Drill Press Table & Fence - Quick Build
Here is a quick build of putting together a table and fence for my grandpa’s old drill press. I’ve wanted one of these for quite a while and now that I have it, I don’t know why I waited so long! I used a product called Track Tubes for the fence. I have been testing out some of these aluminum extrusions for a while now and it’s surprised me how many different ways they come in handy. Go to https://tracktubes.com to reserve some for yourself. The flip-stop I made is not my design. That came from Paul Jenkins, The Wood Knight, here on YouTube and I modified it slightly to fit my needs and materials. Check out Paul’s full video on the flip-stop: https://youtu.be/674Do_GBknc. 4#Favorite Shop Built Table Saw Jigs+Amazing Woodworking Carpentry Workshop
How to Become a Carpenter with Excellent Skills Technology: Doug Hicks is a power tool guy. His table saw is right in the middle of his shop where he can get at it easily. He uses it to make quick rip cuts, for rough cutting a board to length, and to cut accurate joinery for a project. One of the reason’s his table saw is so versatile though is because of all the simple “shop-built” jigs and accessories that he’s accumulated over the years. These accessories allow him to do more with the table saw and do it faster, better, safer, and with a lot less effort. You’ll learn all about 10 of his “Favorite Shop-Built Table Saw Jigs” when you download and watch this week’s Woodsmith Woodworking Seminar podcast. He’ll even show you how to build a few of them. If you want to know how to build all of them, make sure to visit PlansNow and order a copy of the seminar guide for download. It costs only $5.95 and includes an outline of the seminar (you can follow along as you watch the podcasts!) and detailed plans for his ten favorite table saw jigs and accessories.

How to Make a Spline Miter Joint
The spline miter joint is a strong joint that is fairly simple to make with the right tools and attention to detail. Join me in this demonstration of how it's done. I use a jig that I built in the previous video to make the cuts. All you need is the jig, a table saw and some lumber to make this joint, it's that simple. The jig works by sliding along your fence and can be adjusted to cut the slots anywhere on your project. Check out how the jig is made. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8DsDNI6XgM&feature=c4-overview&list=UURWsQfRiwGqBaVP_29OrZVw -Timeline- 1. Layout the spacing - 00:54 2. Setting the fence - 01:44 3. Cutting the slots - 02:34 4. Cutting the splines - 03:55 5. Installing the splines - 04:37 6. See the end result - 05:19 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are the instructions to make the jig, it's simple and can be made in only a few hours. The video can be found on my channel, a link at the end of the video or by clicking the link here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8DsDNI6XgM&feature=c4-overview&list=UURWsQfRiwGqBaVP_29OrZVw 1. Measure Height of fence and cut a piece that dimension by 12 inches long. Label part A. 2. Measure Width of Fence, add ¾ inch and cut a piece to that dimension by 12 inches long. Label part B 3. Part C, the vertical part of the Jig is 12 X 8 inches. Cut it to size and mark its center point on it's bottom (6 inches) 4. With a framing square, align it's corner to the center mark with it's sides at a 45 degree angle to the bottom of Part C. Use a square such as a speed square to set the angle. Label Part C. 5. Cut both parts D to 12 X 7.5 Inches ( Can be made wider to suit) Label both parts D. 6. Cut a 45 degree miter on the bottom edge of both parts D. (The 7.5 inch edge) Use a sliding miter saw, table saw, router, etc. 7. The final piece, part E needs to be cut to 12 X 4 inches. Label part E. 8. With wax paper over your fence, place part A against the right side of the fence. Place part B on top of the fence overlapping part A. Part C is place vertically against the left side of the fence against part B. With glue applied to the parts where they make contact, clamp the parts together and tack together with a nail gun. Leave long enough to dry. 4 hours or so. 9. Apply glue to both parts D where they make contact with part C. Align them on your pencil marks, use your framing square as a guide and clamp in place. Recheck their alignment and nail in place from underneath parts C. 10. Make a center point on part E at 6 inches. Align the mark where parts D meet at the table saws surface. Apply glue between the parts and clamp in place. Check their alignment with a square and nail in place. 11. Wax all surfaces of the jig that make contact with the Table saws surface and fence. Cut list Parts - Inches A -- Height of Fence by 12 inches. B -- Width of Fence plus ¾ inch by 12 inches. C- 12 X 8 D (2x) 12 X 7.5 E -- 12 X 4 Tool List Clamps Glue Nail Gun Square (Framing and Speed Square) Your all done, check to make sure it slides correctly and your ready to cut some spline miter joints. Watch part 2 of this video where I demonstrate how to use this jig to cut the joint. How to be a Better Woodworker
I've long had the belief that those wins that were hardest fought have the sweetest taste. Woodworking is no different. It is an Art and Skill that takes time to master, Once Mastered however it will endure over the lastest fandangled tool or shiney machine. Many times we get caught up in the maelstrom of marketing media promoting the latest and greatest of the most recent must have jigger or whatsé'me'-call-it. Causeing us the consumer to lose sight of the fact that although all these wizz banged things can do a job Sadly in many cases (not all) they do so at the expense of the skill of the woodworker. This was brought home to me with a thud last week as I contemplated how I was going to dress a certain piece of timber which I wanted to unilise in an upcoming commission. Here is my experience and the thoughts and results which ensued. Woodworking Project: Simple Box Joint Jig
The CDC issued a warning against using metal wire brushes on a grill due to the risk of ingesting a wire as it falls off the brush and attaches itself to an unsuspecting burger. It sounded farfetched, but it's actually real. The natural solution for any woodworker is to make a grill scraper out of wood. Sure, you could simply use a scrap board to clean your grill, but why not show off a little and incorporate a box joint and some cool hardware? This will be much more appealing to the discriminating grill master on your shopping list. The cool part of the design is that you actually use the heat from the grill itself to custom form it to your specific grill, which allows the scraper, through continued use, to gradually "wrap around" each rail for thorough cleaning. You can use any hardwood that you want for this project. If it will be stored outside without being covered you might consider using a water resistant species such as white oak. I made mine out of walnut and cherry which are not rot resistant so it will need to be stored under the grill tarp. I like the idea of using two different species so that the contrast showcases the box joint. I chose two darker species for this project because the scraper will get exposed to a lot of black crud on the grill which will stand out less against a backdrop of darker wood. (Kind of like buying a sofa the same color as peanut butter when your kids are at a certain age). Woodhaven Box Joint Jig HD
The Woodhaven Box Joint Jig is the easiest way to make box joints because the work moves over the jig. That means there's less chance for error and better results than jigs that require moving both the jig & the work for each cut. Check out the Box Joint Jig at Woodhaven.com: http://bit.ly/AnIEPr

3#Ten All Time Favorite Woodworking Tips+Amazing Woodworking Carpentry Workshop
How to Become a Carpenter with Excellent Skills Technology: Woodsmith magazine has been around since 1979 and ShopNotes since the early 90’s. When you factor in Workbench (which is celebrating its 50th year in 2007), that means there are literally hundreds of tips to choose from for this seminar. We left it up to Craig Ruegsegger, senior editor and videographer for all three publications, to whittle down the thousands of tips available to come up with his “Ten All-Time Favorite Woodworking Tips!” What he came up with is a mix of timely tips for most of the major operations in a typical home shop. You’ll find tips for cutting panels down to size on the table saw, to simple ideas to make installing drawer slides easier. As an added bonus, he’ll offer some ideas for protecting your investment by documenting your shop with video and photos.

4#Secrets to Making Perfect Panels+Amazing Woodworking Carpentry Workshop
How to Become a Carpenter with Excellent Skills Technology: If there is one thing that really sets apart a beautiful set of cabinets or a fine piece of furniture from work that’s just plain Jane — it’s the panels. We’ve all seen the inexpensive cabinets at the big box stores. Yuck! The door panels usually have one board with wild grain going every which way right next to a board with grain straight as an arrow! It just doesn’t look right. That’s why Craig Ruegsegger has gone to a lot of trouble to show us how to make eye-catching panels during this week’s Woodsmith Woodworking Seminar podcast. His seminar takes into account arranging boards for grain pattern, preparing the boards so they’re flat, straight and square, plus glue-up and clamping techniques. A 15-page seminar guide, just like the one used during the seminar podcast is available for immediate download at PlansNow. It’s priced at $4.95 and includes several great acticles on making panels.

A Tribute to Steve Ramsey (WWMM) - 21centuryknight
This is a tribute to Mr Steve Ramesy, one of my favorite YouTubers. He really gave me the confidence to try my hand at working with wood. Most of my inspiration comes from him and his channel. I do want to make it clear that I do not own any of this material and I do not make any money off this as it is purely for fun. I will gladly remove any part of this if asked to by the rightful owners of this property. Also, I apologize for the thumbnail. It was the best that this system offered me. Check out Steve!
