First is a spectacular stunt from BMW, who recorded the world's longest drift - that's 8 hours solid! - and had to refuel the car five time in the process...Amazing. Next, in the first of three examples from CES, is L'Oreal's tiny wearable UV sensor that tracks sun exposure, so you can enjoy the sunshine safely. Then there's Netflix who set-up a Psychasec stand, claiming to have a solution to immortality - with the ability to transfer your memories from one body to another. But it was all a publicity stunt for their new series Altered Carbon - and it certainly got people's attention. Aaand then Pizza hut announced an autonomous delivery vehicle in partnership with Toyota. And, remember Trump's "shithole countries" comments? Well AirBnB had the perfect response, showing some of those under the spotlight in all their wonder. Then Namibia - or as Trump refers to them as... - went even further by getting a Trump-style narrator to tell people all about their country...which well worth a watch. Finally, the public transport system in Berlin teamed up with Adidas, so their new trainers were also year long travel passes. These are my favourite three marketing strategies… I guess you could call them marketing philosophies. These are the unchangeable, underlying approaches to marketing which can be applied to any new communication tool. Whether Facebook, LinkedIn, youtube, good old fashion mail out campaigns or on the beat knocking on doors. These philosophies are how you can find prospects and move them to become buyers. So enjoy my top 3 marketing ideas for small businesses. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Direct Response Marketing: This is my favourite and is our specialty at mills motion. This when you present your ideal customer with a compelling message, an irresistible offer and a reason to ‘buy now’. While studying marketing at university I discovered most marketers were never taught how to measure the success of their campaigns. They’d teach students to create big marketing plans with in-depth market analysis and huge budgets… And as long as the marketing budget was spent then the campaign was a success… That is corporate marketing. And it is the approach way too many agencies are making. Thats why they love to focus on vanity metrics. Likes, views, subscribers… But never buyers. Thats why I couldn’t stand this side of marketing! It was a breading ground for incompetence and money wasting! Most corporate campaigns underlying philosophy is spray and pray. Throw around money and hope that it brings a return… This is where direct response marketing is different! It is a NO B.S. approach to marketing… Where every cent is measured against every cent that is made. If the campaign isn’t bringing serious positive ROI, then everyone would know about it! The moment a campaign goes out you get direct feed back on the success of the campaign. For example you could send out 1000 letters with a two week deadline on the offer. Two weeks later you could measure the exact number of sales the campaign produced. This can be applied to any new social platforms. Content Marketing: Thats exactly what I am doing here on youtube. But it is a different mind set to most ‘social media’ marketers. My goal is to help my audience… not to ‘get in there way’ with cat pictures. I create content that helps you to solve your problems, show that I am competent and provide a way to stay in touch for when you need my services in the future. Hit the pavement… This ain’t sexy… but it works. And can be refreshing for everyone involved. We often over complicate marketing. Sometimes all we have to do is talk to each other. Great works like the Iliad and the Odyssey revolve around the archetype of the hero. The hero is someone who faces a great foe, one who is seemingly insurmountable, and through dedication and perseverance, prevails. Nike brand strategy truly does hail from the time of the ancient Greeks, and there's a reason it still works. This is because the feelings that Nike commercials evoke are feelings that all humans have. The heroes in Nike advertising are universal heroes, regardless of age, race, gender, or anything else. The Real Message of Nike Commercials Nike commercials show all sorts of ripped, young men and women pushing themselves to the limits against a foe, but what are Nike ads really portraying? They're portraying you and me. Nike brand strategy knows that everyone sees the hero in themselves. Nike branding understands that even though we aren't slaying dragons or rescuing princesses, just getting out of bed in the morning to go to the gym, to work, to school, or anything else, is as trial in and of itself, and Nike commercials are all over that. How Nike Brand Strategy Comes Out in Nike Commercials Nike branding relies on a five-step formula to really drive the Nike marketing strategy home in Nike commercials. Nike ads, with very few exceptions, follow this five step formula in one way or another. The five step formula in Nike advertising is how they show the various stages that the hero must go through in order to fulfil his quest. Nike branding simply channels the story of the hero, one that has been told for millennia, into Nike ads and watches the brand explode. The 5-Steps Nike Branding Uses in Nike Ads Nearly every piece of Nike advertising follows the 5-step formula of Nike branding. First, Nike ads show first to the challenge, in the zone, doubt and suffering, rededication, and finally, victory. Nike branding uses these five steps to universally appeal to men, women, and children all over the world, and to great effect. What Each Step in Nike Marketing Strategy Means Key to Nike ads are the five steps. Nike commercials tend to begin with someone being the first to the challenge, first to the plate, the first up. This is how Nike brand strategy demonstrates first to the challenge. Nike branding then shows the person in the zone, working hard at whatever it is they're doing, and then comes the doubt and suffering. It's at this point in Nike ads that we are unsure if the main character is going to make it through, but then Nike marketing strategy kicks back in with rededication. The character rededicates herself to the goal, and attains victory. Guerrilla marketing means going after the conventional goals of profits, sales and growth but doing it by using unconventional means, such as expanding offerings during gloomy economic days to inspire customers to increase the size of each purchase. Instead of asking that you invest money, guerrilla marketing suggests you invest time, energy, imagination and knowledge instead. It puts profits, not sales, as the main yardstick. It urges that you grow geometrically by enlarging the size of each transaction, having more transactions per year with each customer, and tapping the enormous referral power of current customers. And, it does it through one of the most powerful marketing weapons around--the telephone. The telephone is a remarkably effective follow-up weapon. All guerrillas realize that the process of marketing is very much akin to the process of agriculture. Their marketing plans are the seeds they plant. Because the cost of selling to a brand-new customer is six times higher than selling to an existing customer, guerrilla marketers turn their gaze from strangers to friends. When your customers are confronted with their daily blizzard of junk mail and unwanted e-mail, your mailing piece won't be scrapped with the others and your e-mail won't be instantly deleted. After all, these folks know you, identify with you, trust you. So they'll be delighted to purchase--or at least check out--that new product or service you're offering. As brick-and-mortar retail has shifted towards online (or been entirely replaced by ecommerce, in the case of Blockbuster and others), brands have been going direct to consumers (or via online storefronts/aggregators, like Amazon). Yet the holy grail of performance marketing and advertising to consumers remains elusive: Let's face it, many consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands, for example, are still just guessing in the dark about what people are actually doing with their goods. They're relying way more on art than science to know, predict, and target their customers. But now, with the advent of "Direct Response 2.0" -- thanks to the rise of social commerce and online crowdfunding, promotional transparency and online-to-offline recommendations, and discovery + experiential shopping -- brands and consumers have a direct connection. What does this mean for marketing and advertising and online-to-offline business strategy? Well, customers not only vote with their dollars, they can now influence retailer product decisions... sometimes before they even happen.
