Product Management in Startups: MVP to 4.0 roadmap and product manager tasks

06:11
Keeping a product alive often seems like the sole purpose of an entrepreneur. So much of your time is dedicated to figuring out how to keep the ship from sinking and moving it forward, that you can quickly lose perspective of why you began the journey in the first place. To understand a product’s life cycle and the tasks of a product manager, we must begin with where products start. A product is usually conceived after a personal need sparks an idea of a product to solve it. After this initial spark, the idea has to be validated in order to confirm the problem affects a critical mass of people. This will determine if a business is viable. After validating, your product is ready to be developed, tested, launched. This is easier said than done. But, say you already made your product available, and you already signed up your first thousand users. One would think that after all this, your job is done. But you’ll soon realize people aren’t as willing to pay for your product as they first said they were. For most first-time entrepreneurs, money will flow in slowly and unpredictably. This can be nerve-wracking and put an insane amount of stress over your shoulders. Why do people not pay for your product right away? The answer to that question is product-market fit. It’s very likely that the first versions of your product will fail to satisfy people’s demands. Because understanding these needs properly and providing an adequate solution is TOO DAMN HARD. You will lose your first beloved customers. Either because they weren’t the right kind of customers for you, or because your product simply wasn’t ready, or you weren't the right kind of solution for them. That is a tough pill to swallow, but you’ll learn so much from them that it will make up for the money you failed to collect. Products will inevitably change. You will have a better understanding of your audience’s needs. Our product team often gets asked what they do on a daily basis. Through the last 5 years, our product team has constantly released new features, bug fixes, and product improvements, and a new version of the tool is pushed live every other week. While some of these changes are simply “the tool working as it should be”, some of them unlock a new layer of possibilities. You’ll realize that to keep your product alive, you’ll need to become adaptable on all fronts of your company. You need to embrace the unknown and have the will to question your own hypotheses and reinvent yourself entirely if needed. We set out to help users build better presentations, easier and faster. We wanted to help end users who were seeking an alternative to presentation tools they hated using and were stuck with for years. While the spirit of that claim is valid to this day, many things have changed: We went from freemium to premium, realizing our business model was unsustainable with the former model. We understood that competing with the big sharks was going to be a death race, and we went for specific market niches, catering startups, and small/medium businesses. Our product has changed drastically over the years. That has been the key to our success. We didn’t get stuck on our idea of what our business had to be and instead became what our business needed to be in order to serve our customers properly. Our latest product novelty revolves around the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to design users’ slides. The new slide editor will be able to factor in millions of graphic variables at once and provide optimized solutions to people’s presentations. This kind of innovations have been critical to our success, and have allowed us to outlive many other tools. But in the end, what we’ve come to realize is that these plans and business projections are not meant to predict what will happen, but rather to set a path for your company. Whether you meet them or not is somewhat irrelevant. What matters is how much wanting to meet those goals will be an engine to move your product forward, and adapt it to the many challenges it will face. Over the last five years, this term has gotten wildly out of control. People want to be in Growth and companies want to hire Growth roles. However, from Willie's experience talking to many people who want to hop in the field as well as talking to numerous companies, he's found most of the people who talk about Growth actually have no idea what it is. A big part of what causes this are the lack of definitions. This talk went over clear definitions and why Growth is much more of a Product function than it is a Marketing one. On top of going over how Growth is fundamentally different from Marketing, it also went over how Growth Product Management can be quite different from feature or traditional Product Management. Willie Tran is a Growth Product Manager at Dropbox where he works on implementing new features and experiments to drive revenue. Prior to Dropbox, he was the Head of Product at Testlio and helped scale the company from 7 to more than 60. ABOUT US: Product School is the world’s first tech business school. Product management vs Project management vs SDLC | Comparison and Relationship

05:15
We will look into the relationship and difference between product life cycle management, project life cycle management and SDLC (Software Development Life cycle management) with a simple example in this video. First we will try to define, life cycle phases and major focus of each of these. Product management: Product life cycle management is the process of managing the entire life cycle of a product from inception, through engineering design, and manufacture, to service and disposal of manufactured products. Generally Product life cycle management has the following phases. Idea generation Idea Screening Business Analysis Product Development Test Marketing Commercialization Evaluate and refine Major focus of product life cycle management is, the features and functionalities of the product that it offers to the customers. Now we will look into Project management. As per Project management institute (PMI), Project can be defined as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. the temporary indicates the project has a define start and end time. Project management can be defined as the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. As per PMI, project management has five process group or phases as follows. Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling Closing. The main focus of project management is, to ensure the deliverable are meeting the requirements. Let's move on to SDLC life cycle management. SDLC can be defined as a process for planning, developing, testing, and deploying an information system. SDLC management deals with this managing the process associated with SDLC to build the IT system. Generally it has following 5 phases and according to the selected methodology these phases may or may not overlap. Requirements gathering Design Development Testing, and Implementation Major focus of SDLC management is, to build the system according to the specifications. Let me connect the product, project, and SDLC life cycle with a simple example. Lets imagine a scenario where company XYZ wants to launch a new online web store that helps the merchants to sell their products online. As a first step The XYZ company will start with the initial process of product life cycle management, idea generation, idea screening and business analysis are been performed and business cases are produced to support the launch of the online store. Now the company will start a new project for developing and launching the site. At this stage, the first phase of the project Initiation will be kicked off and project charter, stake holder register will be created. At the time project planning phase, SDLC life cycle starts. Also during the project planning phase, Software Development Methodology (SDM) will be chosen to implement the SDLC process and the software development starts. Normally entire SDLC will be contained in planning, execution, monitor & control phases of project life cycle. I would like to mention one point here. we can't exactly define at what phases of project management life cycle, the SDLC process will fit in, as the SDLC process might or might not overlap based on the selected software development methodology. So here I made an assumption of water fall SDLC methodology is followed. System development and launching process will start either at the planning, or slightly before that, and go through the execution and finishes at the monitoring and control phase. At this stage, SDLC life cycle ends. Next phase of the project is the project closing phase where the required documents will be submitted and the project will get closed formally. Though the project is closed here, still the product life cycle continues here. Product evaluation and refining is a continuous process and the product will be evolved further based on the customers feed back or through some analysis. Lets say, the company wants to roll out a mobile version of the application to the market. At this point of time one more project will be started and will continue the same cycle as mentioned above. So in a nut shell, a product life cycle will have many project life cycles and SDLC will be a part of the project management life cycle.

Integrating Marketing With Product Management

22:53
Jon Gatrell – a Product Marketing, Product Manager, and Educator Extraordinaire – of http://pragmaticmarketing.com/ joins us explain what a well-formed marketing framework looks like, and how digital marketers and the product teams can feed off each other for successful product development and launches. 1. WHY YOU SHOULD INTEGRATE Many organizations just want marketers to look busy. They assume that, "If we do enough stuff, magic will happen." But quantity is not the answer. The key to marketing success is actually asking, "What does management care about?" Is it revenue growth? Is it share? Only after you focus on your company's goal can you get into the right tactics, techniques, and channels. 2. WHY WE FEAR INTEGRATING When you make an effort to care about the business and you invest in a multi-year plan to build a new marketing infrastructure over multiple months to achieve your goal… well, that's a commitment. Making a commitment is always intimidating and risky. But sometimes it's not the marketing department that's afraid of that commitment: sometimes it can be very conservative management. If you're the marketer, it is your responsibility to instruct and educate that management team on the statistics and the numbers and the direction your customers are taking the company. Data and metrics and interviews and observation is how you get the context and the confidence to go to management and say, "Change is needed." And those interviews with customers especially can be very potent. The number of times that product management or marketing asks the customer what they want is often very close to zero. If you want to be confident in front of leadership when they say, "I don't think it will work that way," you say, "These nine customers said it will work that way. I think it might work." That will change their mind pretty quickly. 3. PRAGMATIC MARKETING'S INTEGRATION MODEL Pragmatic's model is built on the idea of properly designing a growing organization, all the way from strategy to execution. Because yes, transitioning your marketing methods over to digital is important… but it's not going to solve all your challenges if you're not actually looking inward at your own company and then outward to understand your market. If you know why you're winning or losing business, then you've can take that data and turn it into a strategy to solve your customer's challenges. Your product shouldn't come before you identify those customer needs; first ask yourself what problems your personas need solved, and work backwards from there. When you start with the product, you're too late. Don't just wait to get the product from the development team and then ask, "How can I apply this in a meaningful way to make money?" Tell the product development team what your customers want and need, and then they can go and build the product. And that of course… means getting involved early-on in production. 4. INTEGRATING EARLY A lot of folks in the marketing space don't get involved with the process until execution, when product developers deliver something new and say, "Hey we built this thing. All you've got to do now is create some demand for it." They don't think they need to have consulted you about it, but you need change the company view of you as a member of their team. You're not just a task manager: you're contributor to decisions. One simple thing you can do to get involved with product development… is just to show up to the meetings. Think about what your digital marketing team can do further back up the process to get involved, to provide assistance, and to show your value to the marketing and product management team at home. By getting involved early, you can have management, product, and the contributor all come together like clockwork, rather than just having things thrown over the wall at marketing with the addendum, "Best of luck!"
