Top 10 Oscar Wilde Quotes and Why He Said Them

07:44
Top 10 Oscar Wilde Quotes and Why He Said Them Oscar Wilde was an Irish playwright, poet, writer, and wit who was an integral part of the fin de siècle group of artists who made up the Aesthetic movement of the late nineteenth century. As a young man, he attended Trinity College in Dublin, and then applied for, and won, a demyship at Magdalen College at Oxford University. There, he became a freemason, even though he was fascinated with Catholicism. It was at Magdalen College that Wilde came into his own, reading, writing, wearing his hair long, and refusing to conform to social norms. He decorated his rooms lavishly and entertained visitors almost daily. Text version: http://www.toptenz.net/top-10-quotes-by-oscar-wilde.php Coming up: 10. "A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal." 9. "The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it." 8. "All great ideas are dangerous." 7. "If you pretend to be good, the world takes you very seriously. If you pretend to be bad, it doesn't. Such is the astounding stupidity of optimism." 6. "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." 5. "Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault. Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope. They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only Beauty. There is no such thing as a moral or immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all." 4. "If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you." 3. "To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance." 2. "The public have an insatiable curiosity to know everything, except what is worth knowing." 1. "My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or the other of us has to go." Oscar Wilde (In Our Time)

28:18
Melvyn Bragg examines Oscar Wilde and the Aesthetes. In February 1895 Oscar Wilde was at the height of his powers, he was known on both sides of the Atlantic, he was feted in London society and celebrated in the West End where An Ideal Husband continued to play to packed houses as The Importance of Being Earnest opened to ecstatic reviews. “The man who can dominate a London dinner table can dominate the world” he is reputed to have said, and he seemed on course to do just that. But in April that year he was arrested for the crime of ‘gross indecency’ and his swift decent from omnipotence began; it ended five years later, when exiled and humiliated he died, famously ‘beyond his means’, in a Paris hotel.Wilde’s reputation spent a long time in the wilderness but just over a century after his death his stock is higher than ever before. Now that his rehabilitation seems complete how should we understand his legacy? Was Wilde a reactionary - the last of the romantics - or was he the midwife to modernism? Was there a coherent philosophy behind those beguiling epigrams or was there little more to aestheticism than dressing up and showing off? With Valentine Cunningham, Professor of English Language and Literature at Oxford University, Regenia Gagnier, Professor of English at the University of Exeter and Neil Sammells, Dean of Humanities at Bath Spa University and author of Wilde Style.

Who Invented Oscar Wilde? Adventures in the History of Sexuality

51:15
Dominic Janes has made a career out of scandal; or, rather, out of studying images and lives that were once found scandalous. ‘I do not say you are it, but you look it, and you pose at it, which is just as bad’, Lord Queensbury challenged Oscar Wilde in the courtroom - which erupted in laughter - and openly accusing Wilde of posing as a sodomite. Oscar Wilde Prefigured is Jane’s latest book. It is a study of the prehistory of this ‘queer moment’ in 1895. He has explored the complex ways in which men who desired sex with men in Britain expressed such interests through clothing, style, and deportment since the mid-eighteenth century. In this lecture he will tease out the means by which same-sex desires could be signalled through visual display in Georgian and Victorian Britain. Wilde, it turns out, was not the starting point for public queer figuration. He was the pivot by which Georgian figures and twentieth-century camp stereotypes meet. Drawing on the mutually reinforcing phenomena of dandyism and caricature of alleged effeminates, Dominic Janes will examine a wide range of images drawn from theatre, fashion, and the popular press to reveal new dimensions of identity politics, gender performance and queer culture. In this way he will continue his career-defining mission to push the boundaries of historical study and even, perhaps, shock, some of the more conservative cultural critics.

[Full AudioBook] Oscar Wilde: The Happy Prince and Other Tales

01:50:11
[Full AudioBook] Oscar Wilde: The Happy Prince and Other Tales A collection of five stories by Oscar Wilde, all incorporating his inimitable style and wit. Sometimes sweet and uplifting, sometimes caustic and pointed, they all are well worth listening to. The Happy Prince is a beautiful tale about a statue of a prince, but one who can now see his city and kingdom and the sadness of his people. With the help of a little swallow he does what he can to help others. The Nightingale and the Rose is a tale of self sacrifice, selfishness and misunderstanding. The Selfish Giant learns a valuable lesson about the laughter of children, The Devoted Friend is a caustic tale about false friendship, and The Remarkable Rocket explores the self delusion of people (and rockets) who think the world revolves around them. Oscar Wilde - Leading a Double Life | Biography

02:35
Born on October 16, 1854 in Dublin, author, playwright and poet Oscar Wilde was a popular literary figure in late Victorian England, known for his brilliant wit, flamboyant style and infamous imprisonment for homosexuality. After graduating from Oxford University, he lectured as a poet, art critic and a leading proponent of the principles of aestheticism. In 1891, he published The Picture of Dorian Gray, his only novel which was panned as immoral by Victorian critics, but is now considered one of his most notable works. As a dramatist, many of Wilde’s plays were well received including his satirical comedies Lady Windermere's Fan (1892), A Woman of No Importance (1893), An Ideal Husband (1895) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), his most famous play. Unconventional in his writing and life, Wilde’s affair with a young man led to his arrest on charges of "gross indecency" in 1895. He was imprisoned for two years and died in poverty three years after his release at the age of 46. #Biography Subscribe for more Biography: http://aetv.us/2AsWMPH Delve deeper into Biography on our site: http://www.biography.com Follow Biography for more surprising stories from fascinating lives: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Biography Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/biography Twitter - https://twitter.com/biography Biography.com captures the most gripping, surprising, and fascinating stories about famous people: The biggest break. The Harlot's House by Oscar Wilde (read by Tom O'Bedlam)

01:50
I misread sidling as sliding, but didn't think it a bad-enough fluff to rerecord the poem. If it gives you the shivers, it works. Here's Vincent Price doing it in his inimitable style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgmgptyBKYg The Victorian painting are: Collier, Lilith Godward, Mischief and Repose (1895), The Mirror of Contemplation Franz Von Stuck. The Sin Burne-Jones, The Annuncation (1899), The Depths of the Sea (1887) Schwabe, Medusa (1895) George Frederic Watts Portrait Of Miss Lilian Macintosh The Smoking Skeleton: http://tinyurl.com/3a74b4f We caught the tread of dancing feet, We loitered down the moonlit street, And stopped beneath the harlot's house. Inside, above the din and fray, We heard the loud musicians play The 'Treues Liebes Herz' of Strauss. Like strange mechanical grotesques, Making fantastic arabesques, The shadows raced across the blind. We watched the ghostly dancers spin To sound of horn and violin, Like black leaves wheeling in the wind. Like wire-pulled automatons, Slim silhouetted skeletons Went sidling through the slow quadrille, Then took each other by the hand, And danced a stately saraband; Their laughter echoed thin and shrill. Sometimes a clockwork puppet pressed A phantom lover to her breast, Sometimes they seemed to try to sing. Sometimes a horrible marionette Came out, and smoked its cigarette Upon the steps like a live thing. Then, turning to my love, I said, 'The dead are dancing with the dead, The dust is whirling with the dust.' But she--she heard the violin, And left my side, and entered in: Love passed into the house of lust. Then suddenly the tune went false, The dancers wearied of the waltz, The shadows ceased to wheel and whirl. And down the long and silent street, The dawn, with silver-sandalled feet, Crept like a frightened girl.
